Product Description
Over recent decades the concept of literacy has been an important field of discussion in Medieval and Early Modern studies, and questions concerning the uses of literacy, the number of literates, differing writing systems, modes of communication and the interaction between orality and literacy have occupied researchers from various disciplines. The aim of this volume is to introduce Scandinavian literacy to the international field of research. On the one hand, to provide a basis that can contribute to a better general understanding of literacy. Because of the volume's interdisciplinary approach, a relatively wide range of material is invoked to illuminate the subject matter. ... Read more

Product Description
The functional analysis of flint tool edges using High Power Microscopy has allowed a great increase in the information that can de derived from stone tools. Founded on this method, this study concerns stone tool functions in the Danish Late Mesolithic Ertebolle culture, as well as in the Neolithic Funnel Beaker Culture (the TRB). It focuses on evidence of prehistoric plant working, and the lacquer-like sheen or use wear known as `gloss'. The first part of the book discusses the methodology and some problems of interpretation, whilst the second discusses the manufacturing of implements, and the analysis of use wear on TRB sickles. A resume in Danish is also included. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and valuable volume !
This book outlines the results of a series of micro-wear analysis of artefacts occurring in the late Mesolithic and Early Neolithic of Denmark. Such a study is unprecedented and fills a long standing gap in ourknowledge of the continuity-discontinuity in artefact usage across thetransition. This work becomes even more valuable now that the symbolic andcontextual significance of artefacts in the Neolithisation process hasbecome such a matter of animated discussion. The analysis of the artefactsis outstanding and the use of the denticulated blades in the late ErtebølleCulture and Early Neolithic to process vegetable matter is demonstrated. ... Read more

Product Description
This book traces the development of modern Scandinavian erotic cinema as it evolved in Denmark and Sweden, from the gentle Swedish naturalist films, starting with One Summer of Happiness in the 50s, to the controversial groundbreakers like I Am Curious (Yellow) of the 60s and on through to the dawn of "Liberated Denmark," where, in the early 70s, the abolition of censorship was celebrated in films like 24 Hours with Ilse and the production of a number of other films that were blatantly pornographic. Also considered is the influence of these films on other countries, particularly the United States, where Scandinavian erotic cinema helped to set in motion the sexual revolution and contributed to the end of film censorship. ... Product Description
"Essentially I am only a poet who loves what wounds: ideals; what infinitely detains: ideals; what makes a person, humanly speaking, unhappy: ideals; what Oteaches to take refuge in grace': ideals; what in a higher sense makes a person indescribably happy: ideals."--Søren Kierkegaard, Journals and Papers, VI, B 749

For Kierkegaard, poet of ideals and practitioner of the indirect method, ideality also had a direct and polemical side. He revealed this in four episodes: the early criticism of Hans Christian Andersen in From the Papers of One Still Living; the Corsair affair with Meïr Goldschmidt on destructive anonymous journalism; the exchange with Andreas G. Rudelbach on the politicizing reformation of the Church; and the subject of the present volume: his "attack on Christendom" against the established ecclesiastical order and the formalism of culture-accommodated Christianity.

Kierkegaard was moved to criticize the church by his differences with Bishop Mynster, Primate of the Church of Denmark. Although Mynster saw in Kierkegaard a complement to himself and his outlook, Kierkegaard sought from him a simple and honest confession that would clear the air by acknowledging the emptying and estheticizing of Christianity that had occurred in Christendom. For three years Kierkegaard was silent, waiting. When Mynster died, his eventual successor, Hans Lassen Martensen, characterized Mynster in his memorial sermon as "an authentic truth-witness" in the "holy chain of truth-witnesses that stretches through the ages from the days of the apostles." This struck Kierkegaard as blasphemous and inspired him to write a series of articles in Fædrelandet, which he followed with ten numbers of the pamphlet The Moment. Nine numbers appeared during the last ten months of Kierkegaard's life; the tenth was awaiting publication when he died. This volume includes the articles from Fædrelandet, all numbers of The Moment, and several other late pieces of Kierkegaard's writing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ...but only if you're so inclined.
Sadly, this volume of Hong's translation of Kierkegaard's work is yet another quickly-out-of-print delicacy.Few are likely to shell out the $80 (or more!) to own this book, so hopefully you can find it at your local library (or request it via interlibrary loan).

Also, like the other Hong translations, there is so much context to dive into.Kierkegaard's polemical attacks on the Danish State Church provoked a literary riot of controversy and rage.Responses from Danish clergy (namely Bishop Martensen) and various supporters or detractors of Kierkegaard are included in appendices, as well as a lengthy selection of journal entries from Kierkegaard.

This is Kierkegaard writing perhaps in his most concise style. The articles get repetitive ("...a truth-witness, one of the authetic truth witnesses, one of the holy chain.") when read altogether, but when one takes into account the dates and the rate at which Kierkegaard was writing and publishing them, and then if one compares the responses, it can be imagined that there was quite a stir going on in the press. And this, of course, was exactly Kierkegaard's intention. He was writing forcefully, persuasively, and personally, finding this attack on the "corrupted" nature of Official Christiandom to be the culmination of his literary calling.

This is Kierkegaard as a 40-something curmudgeon, summing up his legacy, and never writing with more passion than here, months before his death.

This volume of the Kierkegaard's Writings Series is certain to fall into the "Kierkegaard Studies" category, pretty much exclusively, being that those academics who make use of his philosophical work may find little utility here. However, if you're intending to read the whole book casually, set aside plenty of time. With all of the notes and supplemental material, there's lots of page flipping, and it's a little hard to navigate. ... Product Description
The past, we know, informs us. Its texture has been just as real to its time as we feel the present to be for us. And yet, despite its immense importance for establishing and understanding our identity, the reality of the past is curiously inaccessible. This book assembles seven specialists from the fields of history, cultural studies and literature and allows them to debate, in some cases vigorously, the issues of truth and fiction raised by attempts to recreate the past. The debate highlights the formal mechanisms, the imaginative transformations, the ideological commitments whereby history is constructed. ... Read more

Product Description
Foreign observers of American culture have always been puzzled by the invocation in all kinds of unlikely contexts of judicial authority, by the constant reference to personal rights and freedoms, and by the way in which any topic - be it of a political, moral, social or cultural kind - invariably turns into a legal one. Permeating, as it does, all levels of American society and penetrating into all corners of American culture, the law therefore makes an obvious area of study for anyone interested in American Studies. The thematic approaches of the ten essays in this volume are very different and wide-ranging. What the authors of the essays all have in common is a concern for American law and legal discourse as these relate to American culture.Incorporating into the field of American Studies legal concerns and legal issues presents problems of both a methodological and an ideological nature. Several of these are intrinsic to the very attempt of doing interdisciplinary work and consequently concern the nature of American Studies itself.Addressing these problems as they crop up in relation to the cultural works discussed, the contributing authors show that some of the most fertile debates of our discipline are currently taking place within law and American Studies. ...
