Product Description
Illustrating the many ways that structural engineers can bring their creativity and innovation to contribute to the design of the best buildings, this book presents the full value of the engineer in helping clients and architects achieve their goals.

The structural engineer's primary contribution to a project is clear - to ensure the building stands up and carries the loads to which it may be subjected. However, good engineers can bring so much more than this minimum. They add value to a project, enable it to function more effectively, reduce the risk of time and cost overruns, and enable architects greater opportunities for expression.

Addis presents a complete understanding of structure, by explaining the processes, variety of materials and philosophical issues involved, through over forty case studies. These examples illustrate why innovative engineers are now recognized as creators in their own right, able to explore the infinite ways of making and joining materials to create structure and form. It also proves their essential role as an integral member of the design team.

This text is useful to engineers in demonstrating how to apply a knowledge of materials and form to their clients needs, and useful for architects in knowing how to get the best from a structural engineer and realise their dreams.

* Provides a resource for architects in understanding and making effective use of materials and structures
* Encourages more architects to ask for more imaginative input from their structural engineers to inspire building designs
* International case-studies reveal ways in which engineers can help develop architects' ideas ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good meaty book but insanely expensive
This is still one of the best op-amp books out there. It's certainly not for the casual user, but despite what some have said, I think it's accessible to anyone who's had at least 1 semester of linear circuits at a EE level (and a lab to go with it.) There's a good mix of intuition and rigor. The author employs all the tricks of the trade deftly switching between them depending on the application and explaining why. The explanations are very clear, unusual for an english translation of any technical book. Find me a textbook with the nads to say "The only practical way of mathematically analyzing an operational circuit is analysis by partial tests and idealizations of unimportant things." Most authors would burst into flames if they tried to write that.
The book has 2 major downsides though that render it useful only as a reference. First, there are no homework problems. So the book doesn't make a usable textbook except for instructors energetic enough to write their own problem sets. Second, it's insanely expensive. $200 is just plain ridiculous. The price tag puts it way out of reach of any student and any but the most serious designers. Get it from your local college library if you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars The go to book, when you have a problem
Dostal's book is not for the newbie, or for the timid. It goes way beyond the typical simplistic approaches used in academia, yet is practical enough to take a top position on a practicing analog engineers bookshelf.

When you have unexplainable issues, and the factory apps guys start to act clueless, this book is a treasure trove of ideas. A must have for any analog guru, or for those who wish to tread where few would ever want to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is how you _really_ do it
In science and engineering, textbooks gradually decay in quality.Thefirst text is written by the guy who invented the idea, and is rigorous butvery lucid (H. W. Bode's "Network Analysis and Feedback AmplifierDesign" is a good example). Then you get people who write books aboutthings they aren't really expert in, and the treatments become derivativeand are progressively dumbed down with time. The logic becomes fuzzy andmany errors and half-truths creep in.

Jiri Dostal may not have inventedthe op amp, but he writes as though he had--this book is readable, analytically rigorous, and full of clear explanations.Nothing is leftunconsidered, and wow, what a help that is.I recommend this book veryhighly if you need to use op amps for anything at all demanding. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Oldie but goodie
The Fourth Edition of "Fundamentals of Tool Design" is a revision of a book originally published in 1962. There is a chapter dealing with the many ways computers are being used in the field as well as some treatment of GD&T principals. Both new topics are "added on" and not well integrated.

This is a handbook that can also be used as a textbook. In textbook fashion each chapter has a Q&A section at the end. Subjects covered are quite comprehensive and that means that few if any persons are likely to use all of this information. This book remains true to its name by doing a thorough job on the fundamental concepts. That is not to say there is no meat in the book. Chapter 4 covers Workholding Principles in about 100 pages and is well worth reviewing even by experienced persons. There are very useful tables throughout the book that can be used to do the problems at the end of chapter. Any serious tool designer will want to get a "Machinery's Handbook" or other comprehensive and up-to-date reference for feeds, speeds, and material properties. There has to be a drawing, photo, or illustration for every one of it's 750+ pages, maybe more than one per page.
Some of the main chapters include: Workholding Principles, Jig Design, Fixture Design, Design of Pressworking Tools, and Bending, Forming, Drawing, and Forging Dies. To round out this wide variety of topics there are chapters covering machining fundamentals, inspection and welding fixtures, and considerations for new CNC techniques.

It is reasonable to expect that a person with some shop skills could read this book and design simple jigs and fixtures. It is probably not reasonable to expect a person to design a sheet metal stamping die or forging die after studying this book. You would be able to understand all the major parts of a sheet metal die and be able to buy a die more intelligently. There is also a good deal of information useful to the product designer who needs to know what the limits of the manufacturing processes are (e.g. minimum radiuses, tolerance budgeting between parts and process, and some quick cost estimating formulas for tooling and manufacturing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I've been reading several books on practice management lately. This is the best of the bunch.Point your firm in the right direction and steer towards profitability. Buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Sagely Advice for Architects and Designers
Clearly, this book is well worth the price for anyone involved in the management or administration of architectural and design firms. The content is comprehensive, relevant and well-written. Numerous examples and lists as well as an extensive appendix make it very easy to apply concepts. The technical aspects of the book are particularly useful and lucid, especially concerning legal and financial topics. Other sections on planning, marketing and managing growth also offer much information and many insights. Overall, the book certainly stays on track about business by focusing on practice management versus project management. Philosophizing about architecture and design and its place in society is kept to a minimum--a welcome relief from many books on this subject.

The sections on human resource topics such as personnel and compensation tend to be slightly oversimplified in the advice offered. The basic information is perfectly adequate. However, a few of the recommendations may not be as universally appropriate as they appear. The information technology section is helpful, but understandably dated since its publication in 2001, at least so far as Internet-based tools are concerned.

Aside from a couple of rather expensive and ponderous AIA publications, few good resources are available on how to manage the business of architecture and design. The book is the best value and most concise option available. Every firm should have a copy in its library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and concise
I've found this book a valuable resource in developing a growth and strategic plan for my architectural firm. It is a short book and doesn't waste time in getting right to the point. However, I would like it to elaborate on a few items since my firm is young and I'm inexperienced in business. For those firm principals of small firms that have been in business for many years and are experiencing any trouble with the A/E business, this is a must read. My only complaint is that the section on Information Technology is not current enough. However, any hard copy of a book of this type would have trouble keeping up with the changing technology environment. Take time over a weekend or holiday to read this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars J. L. Elliott
As they said in the Wendy's commercial "Where's the beef?".Don't waste your money or time on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much broader than Architects, Engineers & Design Firms
This is one of those rare books that offers more than what the cover reveals. Being a fan of Wiley as a business publisher I was first attracted while searching for books on business strategy. This is a bit of a sleeper to me. My business has nothing to do with the target market yet I can safely rate this as a five star based on the excellent content that works in most business environments.

I like the way the author begins his introduction by taking the reader on a separate pathway that helps shape their personal destiny. His view on breaking from tradition and how being different means being visible aims right at one of the great weaknesses of many professional businesses. He slaps the reader with the realization that they must stand apart from the crowd to be seen in today's frantic world.

Then he leads you into the planning and strategy chapter where he imparts the need for a defined vision in writing as part of your plan. From there he focuses on servicing the client, hiring right, paying right and not trying to grow too fast. Hence the title --- `Staying Small Successfully.'

This is excellent sage advice for just about any business I can think of and goes far beyond its intended market. I'm in the online content delivery business and I consider the insight and wisdom within perfect for my business.

With a few minor changes this could be reissued as 'Growing Your Small Business Successfully.' ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review Jim Williams Book
The Art and Science of Analog Circuit Design was an extremely interesting book to me.I have been a fan of Jim Williams for many years.Jim's ideas have showed me how to design wide bandwidth circuits and build them in my basement.I read the book from cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Educational Material
I've been an analog circuit designer for forty years.Jim's book provides great historical information and a lot of circuit design information.Definitely a "must read" for someone that wants to learn more about electronics and has a desire to be a knowledgeable design engineer.I really don't understand the smug response from the two-star reviewers.Buy it, you'll like it.

2-0 out of 5 stars A few good sections...
This book has a number of good sections, but the majority of the book is really stupid. It has a really good section for job interview preparation, and it gives a good idea of workplace politics. The technical knowledge from this book is not useful whatsoever.I did not find it to be funny, it was actually really embarrassing to be reading a book with random pictures such as an open pizza box, or the guy's wife with a rolling pin about to smash an oscilloscope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Electrical Engineering Novel
You gotta admire the experienced geeks and how they learnt electronics stuff the hard but lasting way. They can never forget the basics as they have so much practical experience. Being a beginner in this wonderful field of analog design, I enjoyed the book a lot. We tend to cram ourselves with knowledge from different books and our instructors also encourage us to explore different methods of explaining things but nothing can beat the time tested, practical experience gained by doing stuff on the bench. Some of the design ideas are really good. After reading this book read the book "trouble shooting analog circuits" by Bob Pease. The authors have proven that practical bench experience is as important as theory in doing good, marketable designs.

2-0 out of 5 stars more fiction than fact
The title and reviews give the impression that this book is a collection of the black arts and secrets of analog design. It isn't.80% of the chapters are old-timers' "when I were a lad" stories. It's not necessarily a bad book - it's highly entertaining and well-written, and new graduates will find the real-life hints and caveats useful, but if you have more than a few years of experience in the industry, don't expect to be educated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a second look at analog circuits (but not the first)...
If you want to learn circuit design from scratch, this is not the book. There are many books, from Sedra and Smith's Microelectronics for EE's to Horowitz and Hill's Art of Electronics for non-EE's. This is an excellent book as a SECOND look (after you have some experience) in electronics to gain insight into a great many topics, many of which are not discussed in a first course (such as the idea of Elmore's delay in analyzing transient response of a transfer function, or how Kramers-Kronig conditions on attenuation and dispersion in materials relate to gain and phase in circuit transfer functions and how Bode/Fano bandwidth limits are related to the real and imaginary parts). Basically, I believe this is a core dump of a physicist's life experiencewith circuits. It is not complete. It sometimes does not flow well if used as a text. However, he writes really well, with humor, and is quite readable. The book also comes with a CD with a version of Spice, and the author uses Spice to describe unusual, interesting examples showing how lock-in amplifiers really work, or how feedback in a circuit pre-distorts signals to correct non-linearities in the feedback path or distortion. This is truly a great "companion" book to browse for insight or to expand your knowledge, after you already know something about analog electronics. Digital circuits are not covered.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mistargeted book
This book bills itself as a book to introduce non-EEs to analog electronics design.Sadly, the author insists on teaching primarily via mathematics.News to author: mathematics isn't suited to tutorial material.Yes, the formula describing the physics of a capacitor may illustrate the operation of real devices, but it does not tell me what a capacitor is useful for.In my experience, you need that intuitive understanding first, before you understand the gory details. This book is not wrong, per se; I am sure the mathematics and electronics are all quite rigorous.I did learn some things by reading it.But, I wouldn't recommend it to another DIYer in a million years.

If you're a non-EE and want to learn analog electronics, take the $120, spend $75 of it on Horowitz and Hill's _Art of Electronics_, and do something else with the $45 you've saved. In the same number of total pages as in the Hamilton book, AoE will teach you more about analog electronics, it will teach it in a way you can grasp a lot quicker, and the book will be useful for reference later. And, the part of AoE following that will teach you basic digital electronics, which Hamilton doesn't even touch.

If, later, you want more physics or mathematics, there must be better books than this one to build on what AoE gives you.I haven't found that better book yet, but I really regret buying the Hamilton book.I almost threw this book away until I remembered how much I paid for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, misleading blurb
This is an excellent book, which I'm enjoying, but it's nothing like what the blurb says.

It's not an introduction to anything. It's a set of essays on interesting topics that bridge the gap between electronics and physics. The quotes from characters like Heaviside are entertaining; the derivations are clear; and the style is lively and fast-paced.Read it *after* working through something like Horowitz and Hill's The Art of Electronics. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Could be a great book.
My biggest problem with this book is between chapters two and three which has a huge gap. Another chapter should be inserted to ease into the technical jargon of chapter three such as "What is an embedded system?" Also a glossary of technical terms and acronyms would not be a bad idea. The author does a good job of explaining the business aspects of being an embedded engineer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, excellent depth and clarity.. voice of experience
This book was a speculative purchase, but it turns out to have been the best of the books I've bought in my search for ground up experience with ARM architecture embedded systems.. The level of the detail is just right, covering one of the most approachable ARM devices available and tackling the GNU compiler setup in just the depth I needed to get me going. My only issues are that the book could do with updating a little, this is going to be an unending task for the author due to the huge popularity of the ARM architecture and the huge number of vendors implementign variations of it.. I wanted an Intel/Marvell XScale PXA270 tutorial and this is as close as I think I'll get... a great buy.

This book is a very practical, and effective guide in using low-cost tools for embedded system development. Extensive tips, and walk-throughs are given. It is a highly recommended hand-on book.

5-0 out of 5 stars GNU/ARM Jump Start
This is an excellent book.I bought it sight-unseen and have been very pleased. The book takes you step-by-step through bringup of an inexpensive ARM7 evaluation board, first using assembly and then using C language with the Newlib embedded C library. The freely available GNU tool chain is used, so you can get up and running without investing in big-ticket commercial development tools.

The book is based on the Atmel EB40 evaluation board. The pricing sweet spot no longer favors this board, so I bought the EB40A instead.I had to figure out differences in the memory map, PIO addresses for the LEDs, and USART clock enable, but this was straightforward after Google searches for the EB40A.

I highly recommend this book. The technical content is accurate, and it is well-written.It appears to be written by an embedded developer, for embedded developers.Other embedded books I have read recently seem organized around marketing objectives, and are over generalized. Those books are interesting but not very useful in the practical sense.

Edwards' book is useful in the practical sense.I hope he continues to write.I'm ready with my credit card when his next book is published. ... Read more

Product Description
Unlike most books on filters, Analog and Digital Filter Design does not start from a position of mathematical complexity. It is written to show readers how to design effective and working electronic filters. The background information and equations from the first edition have been moved into an appendix to allow easier flow of the text while still providing the information for those who are interested.

The addition of questions at the end of each chapter as well as electronic simulation tools has allowed for a more practical, user-friendly text.

*Provides a practical design guide to both analog and digital electronic filters
*Includes electronic simulation tools
*Keeps heavy mathematics to a minimum ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars About this book
It is a nice, easy to read description of analog and digital filtering. Nevertheless, I think that the digital filtering chapters are not enough to explore the potentialities of digital filters and the book would benefit from more practical project examples.
On the overall, it is good for a first approach to filtering, but the reader might need something else for a deeper view of the topic. ... Read more

Product Description
This updated standard, "Design of Latticed Steel Transmission Structures (ASCE 10-97)", provides requirements for the design of guyed and self-supporting latticed steel electrical transmission structures. They are applicable for hot-rolled and cold-formed steel shapes. Analysis techniques are outlined for the geometrical configurations presently in use. Procedures for the design of individual members reflect extensive experience and test data on steels with yield points up to 65 ksi. Connection design procedures allow the engineer to match connection capability to the most suitable end and edge distances for detailing. If full scale structure testing is required procedures are outlined to assist in obtaining critical information. Design procedures cover structural steel members and connections used in foundations. The commentary provides supporting background data. ... Read more

Product Description
Intended primarily for undergraduate chemical-engineering students, this book also includes material which bridges the gap between undergraduate and graduate requirements. The introduction contains a listing of the principal types of reactors employed in the chemical industry, with diagrams and examples of their use. There is then a brief exploration of the concepts employed in later sections for modelling and sizing reactors, followed by basic information on stoichiometry and thermodynamics, and the kinetics of homogeneous and catalyzed reactions. Subsequent chapters are devoted to reactor sizing and modelling in some simple situations, and more detailed coverage of the design and operation of the principal reactor types. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reactor Design
This is book is extremely informative and detailed. It begins by taking the reader through reaction stoichiometry and thermodynamics and how this is modelled. Extensive mathematical models are developed for catalytic surfaces such as concealed active sites within a porous surface. Then sizing calculations are shown for many different types of reactor including non-ideal flow and three phase reactors.
Most importantly though, the book includes problems with solutions to give the reader vital practice working with real life problems. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Why buy a book on engineering design first published nearly thirty years ago? Because it remains up-to-date, intellectually stimulating and realistic. Unlike most texts in the field, it relates design closely to the science and mathematics that are students' chief concern, and shows their relevance. It shows how to make simple but illuminating calculations such as mark the work of great engineers, and how to achieve insight and the invention that often springs from it. It covers design principles thoroughly: these are a great practical aid to designers but receive only limited mention elsewhere. It is, and remains, an original book. Though some of the ideas in it which were novel in 1971 are now widely accepted, others remain new. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ( not only ) For Europan readers ..
As an introduction book, this book is success to aim the mission.Part one contain aspects to get an environmental design, and the author seems to play tactically. Mention the aspects, then give an explanation briefly in aproportional matter ! There will be no long tiring explanation here, andits disccusion is good enough to open our mind. It's an introduction book, isn't it ?

One IMPORTANT thing. This book is written by UK engineerieringconsultant. Means that most of resources data given here is only valid forEuropa / northern hemisphere region. For example,"...buildingorientation should face south to take advantage of the sun'senergy..."( ch. 4 ). Heating aspects, insulation, heat losses and many'cold climate zone' aspects can also found.

On my opinion, despite ofEuropan point of view, this book is still useful but we must have fewknowledge about the aspect to modify the contents for our own purposes.Part two this book contains case studies, all is Europan building.Interesting topic, you will find aspects from part one is apliedhere.

After all, it's good introduction book to start learn aboutenvironmental design, with the best using for Europan / northern hemisphereregion readers. ... Read more
