5-0 out of 5 stars Good for New As Well As Experienced
This book is informative for both newbies and veteran diabetics. For myself, I realized I could adjust my insulin units based on how my body was reacting. That's something I didn't know I could do on my own. I've been a diabetic for over 10 years. This book has many narratives from different people so if you're new to diabetes, it's a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insulin: The best medicine for diabetes
As a diabetes nurse educator, I find my biggest challenge of leading people into optimal blood sugar ranges is convincing them that it is important to start injecting insulin, a hormone their body is no longer making enough of. Next, they need to understand how to do the intensive insulin management their pancreas used to do, but now need to use their own brain to calculate their body's insulin needs.Diabetics will be able to see why they eventually need a before meal insulin correction dose for blood sugars plus enough extra insulin to cover the carbohydrates they eat. There are lots of actual examples from people living with diabetes, in their own words, so it is easy to identify real feelings.Ms. McCarren writes in an easy to read format with tables and charts which creates a simple guide to insulin therapy.I recommend this book to my new insulin starts and people ready to begin intensive insulin therapy.M. Ingram RN CDE

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting approach to understanding insulin
As a type 1 diabetic of thirty-five years, I always find it amusing how type 2s associate insulin with failure and are so afraid to take these tiny and generally painless injections. That said, the ADA's Guide to Insulin & Type 2 Diabetes is a lively little book to get type 2s more comfortable and familiar with the ins and outs of insulin use.

The guide's uniqueness lies in the fact that it includes patients' comments about using insulin from its online message board. For patients already acquainted with insulin, how to use it and all the basics, this makes an animated read. There is much to be gained, particularly emotionally, from reading the views of fellow new patient users. If you don't have a basic understanding of insulin and its use, however, this approach may be a little confusing and for that reason work against understanding clearly the critical information regarding insulin use.

All to say, if you know your insulin Ps & Qs this is a nice addition. If not, go for a basic primer first, and use this as follow-up therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insulin can mean better control
The doctor says it is time for insulin, but you are worried about the needles.Or you think it means your type 2 diabetes has worsened and there is no hope in avoiding complications.Or you're worried about weight gain.

Marie McCarren works to dispel the myths about insulin in this book.Using a balance of clinical guidelines and personal stories from the American Diabetes Association message boards, McCarren does an excellent job explaining all things insulin.

For instance, needles used to inject insulin are small.Better control can be found with insulin therapy and weight can be managed if insulin doses are correct. That is just a sample of answers found in this book.

The only thing missing are photographs of someone injecting insulin. While there are excellent graphs detailing how different insulins peak, I was disappointed not to see injections demonstrated.

Regardless, I plan on keeping this book around for my own reference should insulin become the answer for me in the future.I highly recommend it to anyone worried about their own insulin needs. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cookbooks should have pictures
I honestly have not used this cookbook since I ordered it.There is just something unappealing about a cookbook without pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook
This is a great cookbook. Most of the recipes use items you probably already have on hand. Besides showing the number of servings, it also tells you how much a serving is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Diet for a New Boyfriend
Well, he is definitely diabetic, and enthusiastic about the recipes here. However, actually getting him to eat is the issue.

The cookbook is great. And a godsend for those of us who want to watch what we eat before we become diabetic due to family history or old age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook!
I am taking a class for diabetics and the registered dietician (who is also a type 1 diabetic) highly recommended this book. She has it herself and uses it a lot.I will be ordering this one.The other thing she said was that everyone in the household should be eating the same meals- not to fix separate meals for the diabetic person while the rest of the family eats the less healthy fare.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saw it in USA Today
Saw this book in USA Today and ordered it because the recipes and menus looked simple, inexpensive and delicious. I haven't been disappointed! Especially liked the market basket makeovers and shopping tips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great everyday recipes
This is a cookbook of great everyday recipes. My family is kind of meat and potatoes and doesn't like that "gourmet" stuff most cookbooks have. The peach cobble-up, apple crisp and chicken and dumplings are awesome and fairly simple to make. You might have to start out buying some of the lower fat or sugar substitute ingredients but most of the ingredients are regular pantry items. I definitely recommend this book if you are looking for some healthy recipe alternatives to old fashioned cooking. I usually buy a cookbook, use it once or twice and it winds up on a shelf, but not this one. I use it at least once a week and sometimes 3 or 4 times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not diabetic and I love this book
I come from a family of diabetics and bought this to help improve my eating habits to prevent the disease.Everything I've made from this has been fantastic. It just makes sense -- whole grains, fresh fruits & veggies. The fruited gazpacho (with melon) is a favorite in my house (even with my husband who's not a veggie eater) and the oatmeal yogurt muffins are great.I've bought copies of this for everybody in my family.Don't really use the menus but have consistently found the recipes to be great.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get in the Zone instead
I was VERY disappointed with this book. The Joslin quick and easy recipe book is great however. The healthy carb book is definately only for people who like thier meat still on the hoof. The recipes are unrealistic and I too, found the carb ratios are not what is recommended in the real world.I have better results keeping the Joslin bible in my head, but working with the Zone Cookbook.Be sure your dr agrees b4 you try this at home ;0

3-0 out of 5 stars Carnivors need not apply
This is a good cookbook for vegetarians and relatively inactive ones at that. The meal plans in the back are based on about 1500 calories which would be about 700 or more deficient if you are relatively active.

If you like meat, poultry or fish seek out a different cookbook.

It does have desserts BUT many of the recipes state sugar substitute without giving any hints as to which of the many to use. Since they vary in sweetness and some are packaged as measure for measure equivalent to sucrose, having a recipe saying one packet or 1/8 tsp. may leave you under or over sweetened depending upon what variety you use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Carbohydrates
I was given this book during a diabetes education class. I'm sorry, but eating as many carbohydrates as this book recommends is not helpful to diabetics. If I ate one serving of most recipes, my blood glucose would shoot way up. I guess if you are looking to keep the pharmaceutical industry in business, this is a good way.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unrealistic
The recipes look great, but are unrealistic for the population I work with and the geographic area I am located in.I am in a small Mid-western community without access to alot of these food items.I have been able to use some of the recipes and love those recipes I have tried. Thanks for the great recommendation. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Ultra-Conservative Approach
Dr. Shane-McWhorter does a good job of reviewing most of the major supplements people with diabetes sometimes take. Unfortunately, her concluding comment and recommendation for many of them is to proceed cautiously and avoid most of them. This isn't to say she's wrong; the research on the use of supplements with diabetics is thin at best. Even so, her review of the research focuses almost exclusively on diabetes and fails to take into account the ways various supplements have been shown to assist with different conditions. The book does offer good food-for-thought, but it falls along the lines of those doctors who say, "Just take your medication and maybe a multivitamin, but nothing more." ... Read more

From the first glance it's clear that this diabetes cookbookis different: the recipes are in large print. It's also differentbecause each recipe makes one or two servings--no waste, noleftovers--for people with diabetes who are living alone or with oneother person. No-Fuss Diabetes Recipes for 1 or 2 presents 125recipes--both traditional and ethnically diverse--that "match goodtaste with good health" and don't require odd, hard-to-findingredients. Each major section (breakfast, lunch, dinner) opens with5 quick recipes that require no more than 8 ingredients and no morethan 20 minutes to prepare. Most recipes are modifications of foodsyou've always liked: Huevos Rancheros, several types of muffins, BlackBean Burritos, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chocolate Pudding, ScallopFettuccini. Some are more quirky: Blueberry Fruit Pizza (not pizza atall, but a breakfast item made with pita bread, fat-free cream cheese, apricot preserves, walnuts, and blueberries), Sweet Potato Lunch,Lentil Spaghetti, and Middle Eastern Muffin Burgers (ground beef, couscous, and applesauce). Nutritional breakdown includes calories, carbohydrate, protein, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, andfiber. --Joan Price ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Diabetic cookbook
I really haven't made a lot of the recipes from this cookbook. A lot of the recipes are things that my husband and I won't eat. Maybe at a later time I will use it more.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite weeknight cookbooks
I am not diabetic, nor is anyone in my family, but this is one of my favorite cookbooks. Almost every recipe I've tried from this book is cheap, fast, easy, healthy, and tasty. I'm a very adventurous eater, but when cooking for myself, the biggest problem tends to be the cost of picking up boxes and bottles of ingredients that might only end up being used once. Most of the ingredients called for in this book are things I already have in the pantry or freezer anyway.

This is one book that will stay on my shelf for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderfully helpful little book!uses real food, no exotic ingredients.
i relied on other amazon reviewers to choose this book.
talk about spot-on 5-star reviews!this book covers a few simple basics, great pantry/refrig stocking lists which could make everything in the book, and get-real recipes and portion-control servings (without being starvation-servings).
i'm back to purchase one as an x-mas gift for a dear friend.
i used a marketplace seller and the book arrived quickly and in new condition for a fraction of the new price.great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing
I eat a lot of from scratch food, usually on a vegetarian tilt. I bought this book for myself and my recently diagnosed daughter. To be honest, most of the recipes aren't something I see myself eating. It isn't what I eat, (salads, lean meats) but the quantities that I eat that cause me problems.

For someone who has little idea of how or what to cook, this would be helpful. For someone who has cooked healthy for years, it is redundant and ugly.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU!!!This is a great recipe book
Finally, quick recipes! Some of the recipes you get in other books have way too much prep time or are too complicated to make.I think this is the best resource for someone with diabetes who has to watch sugar/carb intake.I hope more versions of this book comes out. ... Read more

Very simple and easy to follow. Has very healthy recipes and it helps you to plan out your choices. I am very happy with this cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Prescription for a Wonderful Diabetic Life
Every diabetic should keep Eating Well's Diabetic Cookbook in their kitchen, right next to the Splenda. It has all the recipes anyone---diabetic or not---could want to live well and healthfully. The recipes are low in sugar and low in fat but no one would suspect them of being "special" in the dietary sense, more like special in the culinary realm. It's so nice to have a good guide to cooking delicious, healthful meals that can be enjoyed by the whole family, not just people who are watching blood sugar levels (or weight, or blood pressure, or cholesterol.) This is not just a guide for diabetics; it's a cookbook for anyone who enjoys eating and staying healthy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sheeplike followers of the drug-company bought ADA
There's an old vaudeville joke: "Patient: Doctor, doctor! It hurts whenever I do THIS. Doctor: Well, don't DO THAT!"

When we eat carbs, our blood sugar goes up.The solution, according to the ADA, is to eat lots of carbs, then take drugs to bring our BS down.No wonder; the ADA is financed mainly by drug companies.Pecuniam sequi!

The simple, logical approach is NOT to eat things that raise our carbohydrates, as Dr. Bernstein has demonstrated. However, such simple logic doesn't boost drug companies' profits, nor can one claim it on one's insurance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
There is nothing special in this book for Diabetes. It just suggests moderation dietary intake following of famous soon to be changed food pyramid with emphasis on eating heavy starch. Where soon after my brother eats potato his blood sugar level goes through the sky. There are nice suggested meal plans but and data about foods. I was expecting more stringer diet I can take it but I am concerned like "eat fat loose fat diet ".

3-0 out of 5 stars Overdose on carbohydrates.....
Oh what is a person to do. One the one, hand we are offered diets high in protein that cause weight loss but taken to an extreme (devoid of carbohydrates) can injure the body. On the other hand, we haveDIABETES MEAL PLANNING MADE EASY by Hope S. Warshaw that suggests we overdose on carbohydrates. In the end, each of us must decide individually which plan works best.

I am using the INSULIN RESISTANCE DIET by Hart and Grossman to help me get my life in order, i.e. get my insulin regulated. The "weak" spells and almost fainting from hunger syndrome I used to have when I ate less protein (as advocated by Warshaw) are gone. On the other hand, I am not on the high protein diet advocated by some. I am losing weight and regaining the spring I used to have in my step (it's easier when you weigh less). When I lay on my side, I have to use a pillow to support my arm since the cutaneous layer around my middle no longer is large enough to serve this purpose.

Whereas Ms. Warshaw considers carbohydrates the most important food group (placing them at the bottom of her food pyramid with 6+ servings a day), Hart and Grossman place water at their base with 8+ servings a day. Next come vegetables on both pyramids, but Warshaw links vegetables (3-5 servings) and fruits (2-4 servings), whereas Hart and Grossman show only vegetables (unlimited servings but at least 3 per day).At the next level, Warshaw shows milk (2-3 servings) and meat, cheese, fish combined (2-3 servings), compared with Hart and Grossman's "high protein foods (eight servings a day including 2-5 servings of dairy products). At level 4, in case you've been counting, Warshaw shows fats, sweets, and alcohol with NO servings. Level 4 for Hart and Grossman is high carbohydrate foods with the restriction "Eat no more than two servings at any one time. Be sure to eat at least two servings of fruit daily." Fats and oils are the 5th level for Hart and Grossman with the words "keep to a minimum" and "include some good fats in liquid vegetable form."There is no fifth dimension for Ms. Warshaw's diet.

Hart and Grossman say their approach works for diabetics, as well as pre-diabetics and I have found this to be true for me. I am not about to go back on a high carbohydrate diet for anyone, not even the ADA. Maybe, just maybe, the high carbohydrate approach does not work for all women. A key aspect of Hart and Grossman is not only more protein, but a concept they call "linking" where one never eats a carbohydrate without a protein of greater value. Also, drinking lots of water and limiting carbohydrates to 30 grams per two-hour period is helpful.

Hart and Grossman cover research extant at the time they wrote their book (2001) and Warshaw's book reflects the thinking of the ADA extant at the time she published her book (2000). Hart and Grossman have been conducting clinical trials and base their results on their own experiences with clients as well as much scholarly work. The bottom line is if you have diabetes or think you're in the zone, you'll have to do some experimenting. What works for one person may not work for another. As for me, I'm going with Hart and Grossman, because it works.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Cook Creating for a Diabetic
This book is a primo resource book written in laymen's terms. It is equally informative for those very familiar with what food pyramids and healthy eating are all about, as well for those who may be a novice to the subject. The book is organized in such a way to make quick and easy reference something you want to do to refresh your memory once you've read through it and gotten the gist of the goals.Keep it nearby your favorite chair or on your cook book shelf and use it when you make up your grocery list."De-mystify" is an over used word but really describes this book. Best of all, it's backed by the American Diabetes Association and thus, one of the most reliable for this subject.I bought my first copy nearly a hear ago as a newly diagnosed Type II diabetic and have bought other copies for friends, recommended it to others, and refer to it very often, still.I feel it was very instrumental in helping me to obtain my hard won goal of great sugar and weight control (sugar formerly 235, since I've been following the book it's mid-80's and I lost 44 pounds in about 4-5 months).I am a walking advertisement for why you should buy - but most importantly - USE this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars High carb theory
Most of the book reasonably covers the disease and associated problems. The problem is that the authors advocate the mostly carbohydrate diet which may not work well if you have Type II diabetes with obesity and insulin resistance. If youhave Type II diabetes and you are obese, you most likely have "thrifty genes" so large amounts of carbohydrates do not make any sense to me to either control blood glucose or loose weight. If you have the apple shape you may want to consider other dietary options. I suggest that you use your meter or at least your HB1AC readings to determine what is right for you. If carbs make you numbers go high, then carbs may not be for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowerment at Its Best
This book gives comprehensive dietary and nutrition information to empower readers. Because diet and lifestyle factors are the primary causes of Type 2 diabetes, most Type 2's can control their diabetes completely. This is good news because the health problems that can occur as a result of untreated diabetes include blindness, early heart disease, and amputation of body parts. With over half of those with Type 2 not knowing they have it, following the suggestions in the book makes sense whether you have diabetes or not.
The authors explain ways to catch diabetes and pre-diabetes (the precursor to diabetes). They explain insulin resistance and point out that although being overweight puts one at high risk for diabetes, one can be thin and have insulin problems due to "metabolic obesity," which is explained further in the book.
Blood-sugar levels and factors affecting them are clearly explained. The myth that simple sugars are bad and complex carbohydrates are not is dispelled."This is not only a gross oversimplification; it is inaccurate. Simple carbohydrates are found in highly refined, nutrient-depleted foods like table sugar, but they are also found in highly nutritious whole foods like fruits and vegetables. Complex carbohydrates are found in heavily processed foods like white bread and pastries, but are also present in nutrient-dense foods such as wheat berries and beans."
Knowing glycemic indexes is important, but understanding how other foods affect blood-sugar control (like fats) is also important. Factors such as the following are considered: the number of grams of carbohydrate present; the type of sugar (glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose); the amount and type of fiber present; the kind of the starch (amylose versus amylopectin); the form of the food (cooked, raw, dry, liquefied, paste, ground, or otherwise processed); and the presence of other components in the food or in foods eaten with the carbohydrate-rich food.
The authors offer a two-step process for dietary reform. "Step 1 - Take out the trash" and "Step 2 - Pile on the protectors."Trans fatty acids are an example of an item on the trash list.In a recent Nurses Health Study, replacing 2 % of calories from trans fatty acids with polyunsaturated fat reduced the risk for type 2 diabetes by 40%.
The authors pinpoint many health-promoting foods. For example, many whole plant foods contain phytochemicals and antioxidants, and blueberries are "one of the most protective foods on the planet."Their ability to quench free radicals from the body was found to be the highest, often 5 times higher than most other vegetables and fruits.Other protectors in food such as fiber, plant protein, and certain fats are given thorough treatments as well.
Another section of the book includes "Healthy Weight for Life." "Obesity . . .elevates your risk of most of the chronic degenerative diseases plaguing the Western world. The strength of this link cannot be ignored." The problems with high-protein diets are addressed, but you might be surprised to know that the problems with very-low-fat, high-fiber diets are addressed, as well. For example, the authors state that the very low fat diets often allow for too many refined carbohydrates, and this can be a problem.Another problem with too little fat in your diet will reduce the absorption of certain nutrients, and important foods like nuts and seeds, which are good sources of trace minerals and Vitamin E, may be overlooked. Seven steps to achieving a life-long healthy weight are given.
Two popular tools for diabetics - exchange lists and carbohydrate counters - are explained and reviewed. Both systems have their problems. For example, neither "adequately distinguishes among different forms of carbohydrate. Both systems favor animal over plant protein sources. . . . Neither system fully recognizes the huge variations in health effects of different types of fat." Practical information is given about understanding the glycemic index of foods, and sample menus (a week of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) and suggested servings that ensure nutritional adequacy without excessive calories are included. This is especially helpful to diabetics who may be transitioning to the type of diet recommended in this book.
Many people still think of diabetes simply as a sugar problem. Though this is an important issue, there are many other issues, including fat, fiber and micronutrients of which one should be aware. "Making Sense of Sweets" gives information on both nutritive (those with calories) and nonnutritive (no significant calories) sweeteners. There are clear tables for each category including any cautions one should know.
Additional sections of the book include the following:
"Defensive Dining" includes advice for how to handle eating out.
"Survival of the Fittest" addresses the need for exercise and other fitness needs."It appears we can live longer simply by living well. What is more, it is not only the length of our lives that improves with fitness, but the quality of living." All facets of fitness are addressed including aerobics, weight training, flexibility, even emotional fitness and sleeping, and more.
"Self Care: A Daily Maintenance Routine" deals with how we need to take care of ourselves on a daily basis and includes a checklist for our daily assessments of ourselves.
"When Diet and Exercise Are Not Enough" deals with the different medications available to help control diabetes. In addition to prescription medications, the authors investigate vitamins, minerals, herbals, and botanicals.
Finally, "Kitchen Wizardry . . . Tricks of the Trade," helps people to understand what to buy when grocery shopping. It includes an extensive shopping list, suggestions for where to shop, information on reading food labels, and food storage guidelines. The book finishes with a delightful recipe selection to jump-start you on the road to good health and diabetes management.
Overall, the book is well documented with selected references appearing at the ends of each chapter.Defeating Diabetes is a practical, easy-to-read, well-thought-out guide to healthy living and diabetes management. The basics of the health issues that are used to defeat diabetes are sound advice for maintaining good health whether you have diabetes or not. ... Anyone with diabetes knows how important it is to eat well, but healthful food need not be dull, nor does reducing fat and calories have to mean giving up flavor. Why feel deprived when you could start the day with blueberry pancakes with blueberry maple syrup? Company coming? Everyone will enjoy a savory chutney cheese spread or queso fundito followed by pork tenderloin with gremolata. For an easy weeknight dinner, try lasagna casserole or pizza with carmelized onions and smoked turkey. Want to indulge a sweet tooth? Lemon cloud pie or white chocolate cheesecake will satisfy. The recipes in this massive book draw on the latest diabetes recommendations and make the best use of the new lower-fat ingredients available today. Each recipe is accompanied by a nutritional analysis and the most current diabetes exchange information, and the book includes timely information on exercise, carbohydrate counting, and food-exchange lists.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok cookbook!
This cookbook was a bit of a dissapointment to me. I like plain and simple cooking!
I found only a few recipes that I will use!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought for diabete nephew
He said he loved it and it even had vegan recipes in it.He is 16 and I bought this instead of the flowers you get when in the hospital.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Tasty
I think this is a great cookbook.A lot of very good recipes with a good variety of ingredients. Its hard to find diabetic recipes that dont have a lot of beans or veggies (hubby doesnt eat them) and have them still taste good.I have been impressed with everything i have made. The carb count is a little high on some recipes, but the calories and fat are usually low.I also love that you can look up in the index something you have on hand and it will give you a list of recipes that call for that item.Very helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Proceed with caution
Many of the recipes in this cookbook have in excess of 50-60 carbs per serving. Many times a serving is way less then what actually we put on our plates. As a diabetic I could not recommend this book to someone new to diabetes control.A+ for the quanity and quality of the recipes but NOT for a diabetic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Big collection of decent recipes with some caveats
On the plus side, there are 1001 recipes, so you have to be able to find some you will enjoy and the directions are easy to follow. Most of the recipes keep an eye on carbs, sugars and fat, but make sure you pay attention to the sodium and cholesterol content or your meal might get out of hand. I would like to have seen them include fiber and maybe even a breakdown of the carbs and fats in the nutritional info like some other cookbooks are doing. I ran into a couple of recipes that had minor errors in them, such as a listed ingredient not being used in the steps or vice-versa. The most troubling thing I found is that some of the nutritional information doesn't seem to add up. The "Chicken-Vegetable Manicotti with Creamed Spinach Sauce" lists 435 grams of carbs for a 2 manicotti serving. I guess errors are bound to happen when you have 1000 recipes, and I expect they will be fixed for future editions, but make sure you take a good look at the nutritional info and exchanges to see if it makes sense. All in all though, it makes a decent choice for your cookbook collection. ... Read more
