this is ok but as someone else reviewed this, the carbohydrates are too high. This is one of the better recipe books.I'm finding there are so many books and information that lacks to organize the information good enough to be given 5 stars.Sometimes a little information can be more confusing than no information unless from one-on-one sessions with your Dr or specialized nutritionists.

Product Description

Offering new hope to millions, this new nutritional approach to diabetes will dramatically alter the way we think about treating the disease

Until now, most health professionals have considered diabetes a one-way street. Once you developed it, you were stuck with it—and you could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms to heart and kidney problems.

Enter Dr. Neal Barnard, who through a series of groundbreaking studies, the latest funded by the National Institutes for Health, has shown it doesn’t have to be that way. By following the diet outlined in this book, readers can control blood sugar three times more effectively than with the American Diabetes Association’s diet and, beyond that, improve their bodies’ ability to respond to insulin—in effect reversing the defining symptom of the disease. And there’s more. Study participants lost weight, were able to cut back on and sometimes even discontinue medications, and left behind tedious exchange plans in favor of delicious foods in generous portions.

It’s a new way to treat diabetes. It’s about time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reversing Diabetes
A must have book for those with Type I and Type II diabetes - For me, the diet implementation has been a drastic lifestyle change. In one week the results have been outstanding, My meter readings prove it. My sibling is now reading the book so he too can lower his meter readings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book with tips to lessen or reverse diabetes, improve your health
I would like to share some tips in his book that are helpful.
1. Exercise before breakfast lowers blood sugar for the whole day...I have
logged my numbers in before and after and days that I didn't and found
that exercise significantly lowers my numbers.(if your glucose is low
in the morning wait till after breakfast to exercise)

2.Your fat intake and cholesterol affects the liver which in turn
affects the pancreas ability to handle glucose.

3.Dr Barnard recommends cinnamon and other spices that help control
glucose. I really love Almond butter spread on(flourless) Ezekial
breadwith cinnamon. Varitions of Ezekial bread, raisen, muffins
can be found in the organic frozen section of most grocery stores.

4. Good vitamin recomendations,Diabetics especially need B-12

5. This book tells you about the glycemic index of food, and more in depth
charts can be found on the internet. Low to high glycemic index.

6. If you do splurge with something sweet eat the light not sugar free
because of all the additives, take a walk afterwards
to burn up extra glucose in your system or whatever exercise works
best for you.

7. The right type of Fiber is extremely important to regulate glucose.

I have now lost 28 lbs feel and sleep better. I went back to the doctor
several times to monitor my glucose. My Cholesterol went from 248 to 171 my
glucose depending how dedicated I am ranges from 71 to 105 for a overnight fast.

This book reccomends a vegan lifestyle which has remarkable results
however I couldn't completely go vegan
and I have cut back on meat intake and try to at least
have one meal without meat, somedays I do the vegan thing and
my glucose is controllable with diet and exercise. I monitor
my glucose regularly, and schedule doctor visits.

Watch out for too many soy products, because soy can depress the thyroid
which can cause other problems.

Also beware and watch for high fructose corn syrup, studies have
shown that there has been a dramatic increase in diabetes since
this product was introduced and it is in most everything.

I have other family with diabetes so I know how bad diabetes can be
for the health and also how the meds can cause other problems.

Best wishes

16 years as a diabetic, aggravated by exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. All fasting blood sugars in the first week below 115.They have never been this low ever. The logic for why this works is flawless. It is the way our ancestors ate for thousands of years. Plant food and one multivitamin is all we need.If you are committed and smart you will make this work and enjoy the healthy body that comes with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Forget the politics, just in time info
Everyone is different and nothing should be expected to work for all folks.
I recently got a form letter from my health care clinic following routine a physical.
It pointed out that my blood sugar level was increasing to pre-diabetic levels and
that some liver enzymes were out of balance. It made no recommendations, offered no advise.
This book gave me an interesting insight. Over the last several years my family diet had
included increasing quantities of meat and animal products. We had been eating primarily
vegetarian (not as a religion, just preference.) Over the same period I began to experience
itchy skin under certain conditions.

Ok, after reading this book and additional research I draw the following connection:

Meat/Fat --> Glucose/blood --> Liver Enzyme --> Itchy Skin

Taking the other reviews at face value I'll implement the "Vegan" dietary recommendations
and return to the clinic in a few months (as they recommended) and retest. I'm cautiously
optimistic.

Curiously the same testing revealed that my Cholesterol levels which were at the high
end of the newer standards had dropped to the low end. ???

In any case I'm not here to prove science I just want to avoid future difficulties. The
medical profession and drug companies would prefer to profit from their care and drugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars WRITTEN FOR THE AVERAGE PERSON VERY ACCESIBLE AND IT WORKS
I purchased this book after seeing Dr. Barnard's program on PBS. Dr. Barnard is a great communicator. He makes something as drastic as a vegan diet seem entirely practical and doable. And it really is! I used to be someone who could not imagine not eating meat, but after going just a week without eating the flesh of animals, the idea of eating meat seemed repulsive. It's been a month now and I've lost 15 pounds, I feel great, my cholesterol and blood sugar levels have plummeted, and I'm not contributing to the suffering of intelligent creatures anymore. I already have some good before and after pics and after I get ripped, I plan to blog about the whole thing using the pics as proof. Maybe I can get in Dr. Barnard's next book or on the website.

There are many reasons to go Vegan. Dr. Barnard wisely focuses on the health reasons, knowing that most intelligent readers will do their own research about the other myriad of reasons to stop consuming animal products. Here's the big one: YOU ELIMINATE ALL SOURCES OF DIETARY CHOLESTEROL. As he says in the book, "every cell in your body will thank you."Also keep in mind that if you see yourself as an environmentalist, save the earth type of person, than you should look into the havoc that the meat industries are reeking on our planet, not to mention starvation in third world countries.

So that's how I feel now. After tons of failed diets, this is the one that really works. My family thinks I suddenly have an iron will (i'm not known for self-discipline), but it's really true that giving up meat is not that hard once you try. It helps to read some stuff on the PETA website also to get the gross out factor. For example: pigs, who are highly intelligent creatures, have their teeth torn out with no pain killers during the process of getting ready for the slaughter, milk contains a high level of pus, and eggs are the menstrual cycle of chickens (I did not know that). There are many other examples at the PETA website.

Aside from setting aside animal products, the book recommends limiting oils and eating foods low on the glycemic index. It's such a simple process that doesn't come with all the hype of the typical commercial diet, and to me it just makes sense. Buy it and read it with an open mind. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (2)

4-0 out of 5 stars High carb theory
Most of the book reasonably covers the disease and associated problems. The problem is that the authors advocate the mostly carbohydrate diet which may not work well if you have Type II diabetes with obesity and insulin resistance. If youhave Type II diabetes and you are obese, you most likely have "thrifty genes" so large amounts of carbohydrates do not make any sense to me to either control blood glucose or loose weight. If you have the apple shape you may want to consider other dietary options. I suggest that you use your meter or at least your HB1AC readings to determine what is right for you. If carbs make you numbers go high, then carbs may not be for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowerment at Its Best
This book gives comprehensive dietary and nutrition information to empower readers. Because diet and lifestyle factors are the primary causes of Type 2 diabetes, most Type 2's can control their diabetes completely. This is good news because the health problems that can occur as a result of untreated diabetes include blindness, early heart disease, and amputation of body parts. With over half of those with Type 2 not knowing they have it, following the suggestions in the book makes sense whether you have diabetes or not.
The authors explain ways to catch diabetes and pre-diabetes (the precursor to diabetes). They explain insulin resistance and point out that although being overweight puts one at high risk for diabetes, one can be thin and have insulin problems due to "metabolic obesity," which is explained further in the book.
Blood-sugar levels and factors affecting them are clearly explained. The myth that simple sugars are bad and complex carbohydrates are not is dispelled."This is not only a gross oversimplification; it is inaccurate. Simple carbohydrates are found in highly refined, nutrient-depleted foods like table sugar, but they are also found in highly nutritious whole foods like fruits and vegetables. Complex carbohydrates are found in heavily processed foods like white bread and pastries, but are also present in nutrient-dense foods such as wheat berries and beans."
Knowing glycemic indexes is important, but understanding how other foods affect blood-sugar control (like fats) is also important. Factors such as the following are considered: the number of grams of carbohydrate present; the type of sugar (glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose); the amount and type of fiber present; the kind of the starch (amylose versus amylopectin); the form of the food (cooked, raw, dry, liquefied, paste, ground, or otherwise processed); and the presence of other components in the food or in foods eaten with the carbohydrate-rich food.
The authors offer a two-step process for dietary reform. "Step 1 - Take out the trash" and "Step 2 - Pile on the protectors."Trans fatty acids are an example of an item on the trash list.In a recent Nurses Health Study, replacing 2 % of calories from trans fatty acids with polyunsaturated fat reduced the risk for type 2 diabetes by 40%.
The authors pinpoint many health-promoting foods. For example, many whole plant foods contain phytochemicals and antioxidants, and blueberries are "one of the most protective foods on the planet."Their ability to quench free radicals from the body was found to be the highest, often 5 times higher than most other vegetables and fruits.Other protectors in food such as fiber, plant protein, and certain fats are given thorough treatments as well.
Another section of the book includes "Healthy Weight for Life." "Obesity . . .elevates your risk of most of the chronic degenerative diseases plaguing the Western world. The strength of this link cannot be ignored." The problems with high-protein diets are addressed, but you might be surprised to know that the problems with very-low-fat, high-fiber diets are addressed, as well. For example, the authors state that the very low fat diets often allow for too many refined carbohydrates, and this can be a problem.Another problem with too little fat in your diet will reduce the absorption of certain nutrients, and important foods like nuts and seeds, which are good sources of trace minerals and Vitamin E, may be overlooked. Seven steps to achieving a life-long healthy weight are given.
Two popular tools for diabetics - exchange lists and carbohydrate counters - are explained and reviewed. Both systems have their problems. For example, neither "adequately distinguishes among different forms of carbohydrate. Both systems favor animal over plant protein sources. . . . Neither system fully recognizes the huge variations in health effects of different types of fat." Practical information is given about understanding the glycemic index of foods, and sample menus (a week of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) and suggested servings that ensure nutritional adequacy without excessive calories are included. This is especially helpful to diabetics who may be transitioning to the type of diet recommended in this book.
Many people still think of diabetes simply as a sugar problem. Though this is an important issue, there are many other issues, including fat, fiber and micronutrients of which one should be aware. "Making Sense of Sweets" gives information on both nutritive (those with calories) and nonnutritive (no significant calories) sweeteners. There are clear tables for each category including any cautions one should know.
Additional sections of the book include the following:
"Defensive Dining" includes advice for how to handle eating out.
"Survival of the Fittest" addresses the need for exercise and other fitness needs."It appears we can live longer simply by living well. What is more, it is not only the length of our lives that improves with fitness, but the quality of living." All facets of fitness are addressed including aerobics, weight training, flexibility, even emotional fitness and sleeping, and more.
"Self Care: A Daily Maintenance Routine" deals with how we need to take care of ourselves on a daily basis and includes a checklist for our daily assessments of ourselves.
"When Diet and Exercise Are Not Enough" deals with the different medications available to help control diabetes. In addition to prescription medications, the authors investigate vitamins, minerals, herbals, and botanicals.
Finally, "Kitchen Wizardry . . . Tricks of the Trade," helps people to understand what to buy when grocery shopping. It includes an extensive shopping list, suggestions for where to shop, information on reading food labels, and food storage guidelines. The book finishes with a delightful recipe selection to jump-start you on the road to good health and diabetes management.
Overall, the book is well documented with selected references appearing at the ends of each chapter.Defeating Diabetes is a practical, easy-to-read, well-thought-out guide to healthy living and diabetes management. The basics of the health issues that are used to defeat diabetes are sound advice for maintaining good health whether you have diabetes or not. ... Product Description
This book has been designed to help children with diabetes appreciate the importance of taking their insulin injections and being aware of what they eat. Although parents are of course primarily responsible for the care of their child s diabetes, it is important that the children themselves are aware that they too must take some responsibility. This book encourages children to follow the instructions given to them by their doctors and parents, to eat healthily, and to see their insulin injections as something brave that they do, that other children cannot! Instead of viewing diabetes and their daily injections as something negative, the story encourages them to think of it as something that sets them apart from their peers in a positive way. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly creative, fun, positive story for kids with Type 1
This story is really entertaining, funny, and yet educational too. It's one of the better books on this topic that I've seen!

3-0 out of 5 stars okay but better for small kids
GOt this for my son when he was 7.He was already to old for it.Good for a smaller kid if you read it to them and their attention span is long enough. I do thank anyone who writes a bookfor diabetic kids as there is so little of substance out there but sadly, this didn't do it for my (or the other) t1 I brought it for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and very cool!
The author of this book should get an award. It is very creative and the drawings are fabulous.Super funny and definitely puts a positive spin on Type 1 diabetes.I loved it, and sent copies to family, friends, and school staff.I also thought it would be a great way to break the ice with anyone who is making fun of a diabetic child at school.

Most of all, it helps our kids feel like superheroes (because they are) and has a good lesson about helping others all around the world who may not have the same medical amenities that we have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for any Diabetic Family
I could not keep myself from crying as I first read this book to my diabetic child, I kept getting severely choked up on many pages, and had a hard time finishing this story without sobbing. It is wonderfully written and illustrated in a fun comic book style.I wish we had this in our home right after diagnosis.A friendly way to explain diabetes to children, and to give strength and inspiration to a diagnosed child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book but for older kids
I was looking for a book to share with my daughter's Kindergarten class, to help them understand her diabetes. This book was a tad long for their attention spans. Still a fun book, so I will save it to share when she is older. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy Calendar Diabetic Cooking
The book I ordered was delivered on time and I am pleased with my purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Complete Menu Cookbook
I don't have diabetes.I just like menu cookbooks but it's hard to find one that's tasty and healthy. This book gives you a main dish and sometimes a side dish for every day of the year, but I was disappointed. Some of the main dishes are under 200 calories per seving with no side dish recommendations, much less a recipe for one.I even saw a few that were less than 150 calories. Is 150 calories a meal or a snack?I'm sure this is a valuable resource for people with diabetes, however be aware that you will often have to plan your own side dishes. You need to look at the calories per serving. For example, the first "meal" in September has 145 calories per serving. There is no side dish. The main dish for the next day has 327 calories per serving. Now this one does have a side dish, bring it up to 401 calories per serving.Go figure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good beginner's book
As someone who did not know how to dice an onion a month and a half ago, this book gave me some basic and tasty recipes that are simple to make and loved in our home such as the spicy sweet potato fries, crab tostadas, and tortilla soup. I've since learned how to handle a knife, and thanks to youtube videos, I can now dice an onion and julienne a bell pepper and a lot more. So I'll be moving on in my quest for new recipes, but some of the dishes in this book will remain a permanent fixture in our home. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where has this been all my life!!!!
As a working mom, I don't think I'm alone in feeling like "if only someone would tell me what to make for dinner, I wouldn't mind cooking". This book not only does that, it gives me a grocery list for each week's menus. I simply make a copy of the list, cross off what I already have at home and head off to the store! Knowing that we have a plan and all the ingredients are at home means no last minute stops at the grocery store or fast food for dinner.

Our family consists of my husband who is diabetic, a teenager who is trying to be a vegitarian and myself. Between work, school and family obligations we found ourselves grabbing fast food or going out to eat several times a week. Now with minimal planning we can have healthy meals at home. There are so many quick recipes in this book that we can often find a meal to fit into those nights where we are on the go or coming home late.

I have recommended this book to so many family and friends. These healthy recipes would be valuable to any family, not only those with a diabetic member. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cure or Remission?
First, let me start by saying I haven't read this book YET. I have looked through it and believe it has a lot of valuable information so it's on my reading list.

As a RN who works with diabetics, I'm always looking for healthier ways to help them. The standard protocols do not work and the American Diabetic Association allows foods that should never be considered as part of a healthy diet. Additionally, when a diabetic ends up on dialysis, they have a renal diet that's not exactly compatible with a diabetic diet. It's very frustrating.

I also work with very poor people who sometimes have a challenge buying groceries, let alone supplements. I continue to believe the solution is to teach prevention EARLY. Doctors are still way behind the curve in identifying and intervening with PREDIABETICS. If we had more identification and "treatment" of prediabetics, we could slow down or prevent the onset in a significant portion of people.

I agree with one reviewer - not sure you can say CURED. To me, cured means you can eat anything you want - even a Snickers bar - and your blood sugars will remain normal. Once you have diabetes, I don't believe that's ever possible.

I do believe you can have a REMISSION and maintain remission through diet and lifestyle changes.I've done that with many of my patients - and not by using the ADA guidelines. I've had patients who were told they will always be on insulin come off insulin and even oral hypoglycemics. Their blood sugars, triglycerides and cholesterol return to normal. It takes time and work - you must, must, must change your lifestyle.

Another issue not many practitioners address that can contribute to elevated blood sugars are medications, pain, inflammation, parasites and so on.Sometimes even a "cure" is simply treating the symptoms. But, this is where lifestyle changes are so critical as they can begin addressing the root cause of a problem.

We also must begin a pardigm shift in our thinking: while diabetes is a disease, it is still a symptom of something awry in the body and we must begin asking WHAT and WHY?

I'm so frustrated with the system in our country and poor people's inability to do the things that will truly help them that I'm considering starting a nonprofit to allow me to do those things. It's important to educate people but if they don't have the tools or the money to buy the tools, it does them no good.

The information in this book and others like it is an excellent place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
I am currently reading this book and it seems to be very good. I don't know if it is truly a cure but the recommendations seem to be on target.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Cure Review
Book was really out of date when it came to the facts it represented in the book (published in 1999). Not sure that the current thought agrees with the use of the supplement as effective for dealing with diabetes. However, the principles of low carbohydrates, exercise, etc. are timeless and very helpful to the newly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.Seller was great on sending it on time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Cure:A Natural Plan...
Excellent. This book is easy to read and contains common sense medical advice that embraces an integrative approach to healing.Written by an M.D., even the most conservative patient can be confident that the recommendations in this book are based on long term trials and personal case studies of the author himself, and his patients. In other words, this was not written by some New Age guru or quack selling snake oils.Dr. Cherewatenko does not sell anything but does include a list of Consumer Reports' Top 8 glucometers in his book, as well as specific supplements by brand name that he recommends.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving their overall health.

I learned from this book how my beta cells producing less insulin over time is completely normal for people who have had diabetes for some years. It is the progression of the disease. It is a chronic illness, which will never leave me. But controlling blood glucose levels is critical to halting the nasty complications of diabetes. Very informative and a great introduction for me to get serious about accepting my illness. I can't wait to read more and take action.

4-0 out of 5 stars 50 Secrets of the Longest Living People with Diabetes
I was interested in reading this book because I have had diabetes for 47 years and because I have a very good friend who was one of the 50 interviewed for the book.It was interesting reading and I would recommend it to diabetics for some insightful
    education.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for diabetics
This is a really informative book for diabetics. It is so nice to know so many others are dealing with this disease. To read of their struggles over so many years of their lives and surviving and thriving is encouraging. There are many practical tips, also.Well worth the time and money to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Might be good for new diabetics
I might recommend this book for someone newly diagnosed but it doesn't have anything new or insightful for anyone who has done any reading about the subject before. It tends to be repetitive which makes for a difficult read. If you read the first page and first 2 or 3 quotes at the beginning of each chapter you pretty much have read the entire chapter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, It's just not that good
I'm not a negative reviewer as a general rule. I order a book because I expect to like it and I did like this book, but I didn't love it. Printed on newsprint the quality seemed cheap as a book and rather thin on content.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must -read for anyone with diabetes...
This is one of the best books about diabetes and people living with diabetes that I have read in a very long time.As a person living with the disease for over 40 years, it was such an inspiration to read about other people that have lived with it even longer than I and to read about others who are dealing with the same issues that I deal with all the time.It is so important for people to know that diabetes does not have to be a death sentence...it is a manageable disease and the proof of that is in reading this book.

I suppose I shouldn't brag too much since I'm quoted quite a bit in this book, but it is truly a book for anyone with diabetes. It is filled with amazing suggestions, (yes, even I learned some new things!) and it should encourage all who take the time to really absorb the contents.

Dr. Sheri and Dr. Steve are both wonderful people and certainly experienced in their field as they, too live with diabetes.

5-0 out of 5 stars DTour Diet COOKBOOK
This is an excellent companion piece to the DTOUR DIET.
Once you've gone through the recipes in the DIET book and are comfortable with the mix-n-match approach, this cookbook gets you many more recipes that are tasty and easy to prepare.

3-0 out of 5 stars a little disappointed
the book was new as stated, but I was a little disappointed in the contents. It is an unrealistic diet for my husband. It does contain a lot of useful information about diabeties for someone new at this medical problem.

2-0 out of 5 stars Recipes with too many and not-on-hand ingredients
I didn't find the recipe portion of this book to be beneficial since most of these recipes call for items that I don't usually stock in my pantry or refrigerator. It would be okay if the same ingredients were used in several of the recipes, then I wouldn't mind purchasing these food items since I would be using them up in other recipes. That's not the case, you have to purchase items that you normally would not have on hand in your kitchen and then it would take a long to finish them.I have other recipe books for people with diabetes that are MUCH better than this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK
I HAVE NOT USED THIS BOOK LONG ENOUGH TO GIVE A PROPER REVIEW.RECIPIES SEEM GOOD. THE CARB.COUNTS ARE TOO HIGH FOR ME.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes DTOUR Diet Cookbook
The Diabetes DTOUR Diet Cookbook is broken down into three parts.Part one is an introduction to the DTOUR diet.Part two is the recipe section.Part three is full of additional resources like sample menus and eating out suggestions.

The recipes are broken down into Appetizers, Breakfasts, Soups & Sandwiches, Salads & Sides, Meats & Poultry, Seafood, Vegetarian, and Sweets & Treats. Each chapter contains a number of beautiful, full color photographs of some of the recipes included. Each recipe is written on one page with no carry over to the next page which makes it very easy to follow and to cook from.

The recipes are very well thought out and include an ingredients list and easy to follow, numbered directions.Recipes also include nutrition information including calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, sat fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber, calcium & omega-3's.There are also notations included throughout to let the reader know which recipes are quick to make.

I was extremely happy to find out that the cookbook doesn't use artificial sweeteners in its recipes. The recipes use traditional sweeteners like honey, granulated sugar and confectioners sugar. The recipes do generally recommend using ingredients that are low fat and low sodium which makes sense in a diet cookbook.

A number of the recipes have sections with suggestions on how the recipe can be made ahead or stored for future use. This is a great help for busy cooks who don't have a lot of time in the kitchen. I also enjoyed the notations that let me know how I could use up any leftovers from the meal or what else I should serve with it for side dishes.

I loved the variety of different types of recipes.I found old family favorites like New England Clam Chowder along with exotic sounding dishes like Sesame Ginger Tuna Kabobs. There are man pleasing recipes like Slow Cooker Beef Pot Roast with Root Vegetables and kid pleasing recipes like Ranch Chicken Fingers. Not to mention all the yummy desserts in there to please ME like the Milk Chocolate Panna Cotta! Oh boy now that sounds good!

If you're trying to loose weight, lower your blood sugar or just eat healthier, The Diabetes DTOUR Diet Cookbook will show you how with each tempting, mouth watering recipe!

This is a very helpful book even for the ones that do not suffer from diabetes.
    I highly recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bible??The book is less then a inch thick!
Maybe its the beginners bible and not the holy bible size they were talking about. This book is for beginners only!!The main part of this book is recipes. If I wanted that I would have bought a recipe book not a book to teach me about diabetes nutrition. This is not a complete anything!!!Try Prevention The Sugar Solution.I am returning the "bible".What a waste of my money having to return this book. Not sure why it has so many stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bibld
This is a very informative book, with lots of tips.I've tried some of the recipes and they are good.I also purchased the book for a family member and they also found a lot of useful information in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Deliver What It Promises
I would not recommend this book for people who are trying to get their life together after a diagnosis of diabetes. I bought this book because its subtitle is "A Complete Guide to Planning, Shopping, Cooking, and Eating". It is none of those things.
I was particularly interested in the SHOPPING promise because I find that to be the most difficult part of managing my diet. Other books didn't have anything helpful, and despite its promise, this book doesn't either. One has to read through every single recipe, write down the ingredients of what you want to make, and then go out and get it. Just like every other book. So tell me: how does this help with "shopping"? I expected lists of basic staples in a diabetic's diet. There should be lists of "must-haves" for your pantry. This book lies about what it contains, and is sadly lacking in what it needs.
An expensive mistake, don't buy it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great
This is a decent cookbook with recipes that are simple and many contain ingredients that you probably already have on hand. The nutrition content is in large print and easy to read and understand, and there's enough variety in the recipes that just about anyone can find at least one dish they're interested in.
My biggest issue with this cookbook is that in many of the recipes, the serving size is not specific; it will say that the portion is "1/5 of recipe." Without measuring the entire dish out, I have no idea if that is one cup, 1/2 cup, etc. I think the authors could have been more specific, as they were in other recipes, as to what exactly a serving size consists of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I bought this as a gift to my father-he has recently discovered that he has diabetes. My family loves this book it has helped them stay healthy and eat the things that they love just with a different twist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and interesting
This book is very informative, healthwise. Also, many good sounding recipes. Will be trying some soon.I feel that this book is a good book for anyone.Glad I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for busy professionals who want to eat healthy!!!
Love it!I don't have diabetes, however, I like to watch my carbs and this book helps me cook at home and feel good about what I'm eating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas for Healthy Eating
The Healthy Carb Diabetes Cookbook is aimed at people who want to eat more healthily while explicitly avoiding high sugar and high starch meals.I certainly laud that mission! However, be aware that many of these pages come down to being eating ideas rather than actual recipes. For some cooks this is great! For others it might be a bit frustrating.

Pretty much every recipe is a single page. You get recipes broken out into breakfast, lunch, dinner, sides / appetizers and desserts. As with any recipe book, there are going to be recipes you adore and others you just aren't personally fond of.Some of us love scallops, some of us hate scallops. It's not a bad thing, it's a nice thing that we all have different taste buds.

So in that sense, we went more for a general style sense on the cookbook rather than praising or disliking specific recipes.

So first, many of the recipes are on the vague side. They include things like "get some frozen waffles and put berries on top". Or perhaps "get some frozen fish fillets - cook them according to the package - and put them on hamburger buns". Yes, other of the recipes are more complete, but sticking with the one-page theme they tend to have brief descriptions.

Because of these situations, we were extremely curious how the nutritional information was calculated. After all, if you use different pre-made frozen waffles, they can vary wildly as to their nutritional content. The same is true for tortillas, mentioned in another recipe. One recipe said the salt was optional - but was the salt included in the nutritional value, or not?

Now, that all being said, we really like a lot of the ideas presented here. It's not as much that they give you a "real recipe" to follow as much as they give you a cool idea. Mexican tuna salad? That sounds rather delicious! I don't need to follow their exact recipe - I can use their cool starting point and go from there. Cheesy cauliflower mash? I can easily do that, but not use their fat-free half-and-half.

However, I didn't really need their ice cream sandwich idea of "take a scoop of ice cream - put it between two low carb cookies" :) To me that doesn't deserve a full page of it's own. How about including several ice cream ideas all together, to make it a little more complete?

So, if you get stuck for ideas, then definitely use this book to help you get some new ones! Eating healthy is a VERY delicious way to live and you can eat delicious new things every day. If you already have a number of low carb cookbooks and have a variety of recipe ideas, then you probably can grab this at your library and just skim it for another idea or two. ... Read more

This book gives a whole new perspective on how to eat correctly to control blood sugar.Whether you are pre-diabetic (as I am), gestational diabetic, type I diabetic, or type II diabetic (as hubby is)...the information is in here for the taking!Being a Cajun, I don't care much for most of the recipes in here, but the information is worth its weight in gold...you won't regret getting this book and you will use it for life.If you get only one book on diabetes, get this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Point Of care Resource on DIABETES for Primary Care
I just bought my hard copy last month and I have also heard Dr Jeff Unger in person on diabetes seminars. He is a primary care physician and being primary care physician myself this book is all I need to know improve diabetes care for my patients. This is not a Harisson or a detailed Thesis on Diabetes but practicle great point of care informations and diferent tools which can be used in an office settings to educate patient and office staff to improve diabetes care. With the fact that 90% of Diabetic population in US (out of approx 22 million people with diabetes)being taken care by Primary care physicians this is a must have tool I believe. The only thing better than the book is to hear Dr Jeff Uner in person. I would definately recommened this book to every Primary care MD or residents.

5-0 out of 5 stars If knowledge is power, prepare to be superman
If you treat Diabetic patients you should get this book.

Written by a diabetic Family Physician who understands that to treat diabetes you need to "think like a pancreas." This book was written to provide primary care doctors the tools we need to care for these challenging patients. I got this book the first week it was out and I haven't regreted it.

With the explosion of Diabetes there are not enough consultant physicians (specialists) out there to care for all of these patients.Dr Unger provides the information we need to provide excellent care for our diabetic patients.

I cannot praise this book enough. The only thing better is hear Dr Unger lecture on Diabetic Care in person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes Text book
Amazingly comprehensive review of all aspects of diabetes. This book is up to date, evidence-based, case based and most importantly, written from the heart. Rarely do medical text books read like novels. This is the exception. Check out the chapter on managing mental illness in patients with diabetes. The complications chapter is the most comprehensive and current review I have encountered. ... Read more

A great book!! It's core message: IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THESE FIVE CRITICAL ISSUES, THERE IS NO REASON YOU CANNOT LIVE A LONG, HEALTY AND HAPPY LIFE. It is not Diabetes that leads to complications and a short life, but the mismanagement of these five critical numbers. Spells out EVERYTHING you need to know about these five issues.Everything is super clear and well laid out.Gives great game plans for management, taking control of your own condition and issues, how to make the most of doctor visits.Debunks common myths about Diabetes and unveils little known truths.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reading!!
This Book is wonderful especially for the newly diagnosed Diabetic, it is very informative and helpful.I learned a great deal. I would suggest this book to be a part of required reading for all diabetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read this book
I wish I could put a copy of Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes: 5 Essential Health Factors You Can Master to Enjoy a Long and Healthy Life in every diabetes clinic. Better yet, in the hands of every person with type 2 diabetes.

Richard Jackson, MD and Amy Tenderich provide a realistic guide to diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, with this book. The focus is on the results of the five tests that determine diabetes health (A1C, blood pressure, lipids, microalbumin, and eye exam) and the importance of physical activity rather than providing another lecture about weight loss and forbidden foods. Countering fears about insulin is another important aspect of this book. If someone needs insulin to keep good results coming on the five key tests, they should not fear it - they should embrace it as a way to curb future complications.

I might not be able to provide a copy to every person with type 2 diabetes...or even every diabetes clinic, but I can lend my copy to those interested in learning more about their own or their loved one's condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars 'Almost' All You Need To Know About Diabetes
Lose 30 pounds. Get your blood pressure down. Lower your LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and get that HDL cholesterol up. Keep an eye on your blood sugar and have it checked often.

Does any of this sound familiar? Sure it does and you may have even heard it from your own doctor regarding your flailing health because of you are overweight or obese. It's the dreaded lecture that comes from physicians when they see certain health indicators come back as irregular.

But what if what you are dealing with is something even more life-threatening than just a bout with obesity, hypertension, or a poor lipid profile? What if it's one of the most dreaded of all diseases that makes you feel like your world has come to an official end? That's exactly what happens to some people when they are told they have been diagnosed with diabetes.

What did I do to cause this? How can something like this happen to me? Will I ever live a "normal" life again or am I destined for a life of painful insulin injections, expensive prescription medications, and endless doctor visits for the rest of my life?

These thoughts are not only very real to people who are told they have diabetes, but it can paralyze them even when they otherwise have their life under complete control. Diabetes has quite literally turned the life of millions of people upside down and leaves them with very little hope or help. Where can people turn when they are faced with such despair about this complex disease they have?

Whether you are Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic, then you have undoubtedly been given some all-too-familiar generic advice about handling your diabetes (like I illustrated at the beginning of this review) which is all meant to help you I am sure. Unfortunately, though, this kind of one-size-fits-all approach to diabetes is not only shortsighted, but incredibly ineffective.

That's where the mostly informative new book from Harvard medical professor and Joslin Diabetes Center investigator Dr. Richard Jackson as well as saucy and always on point professional journalist, blogger, and diabetes sufferer Amy Tenderich comes into play. It's called Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes: 5 Essential Health Factors You Can Master To Enjoy A Long And Healthy Life (Marlowe Diabetes Library) and will quickly become your handy reference resource guide for almost everything you ever wanted to know about diabetes.

I say "almost" for a reason which I will explain in a moment.

First, the good parts of this book. It is very well put together in an enjoyable format mixing a healthy dose of diabetes facts alongside some hands-on practical advice about how to best implement the proper lifestyle changes that need to take place for optimal diabetes management. While this can be a rather drab and boring topic to discuss, Dr. Jackson and Tenderich do a yeoman's job of keeping it fun and engaging.

And I really like the fact that the authors strongly urge people living with diabetes to implement permanent lifestyle changes. At the same time, they push the positive message that diabetics don't necessarily need to attempt to make multiple changes all at once, but instead slowly begin to work them into their individual routine incrementally. I agree with this bit-by-bit strategy because it is the best way to make the changes take hold and become a permanent habit whether it is with weight loss, diabetes, or anything else. Breaking out of those old habits takes time.

Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes hits the ground running right away in the first six chapters explaining why you need to be concerned about your health when you have diabetes and points to the five tests that every single diabetic absolutely must have checked regularly if they are going to lick this disease by learning to manage it well.

What are these five tests? Very simply put, it's the following:

    1. Your A1C
    2. Your blood pressure
    3. Your lipid profile (cholesterol)
    4. Your microalbumin (What?! Don't worry, they explain!)
    5. Your eye exam

While Dr. Jackson and Tenderich do not explicitly recommend people who are not diabetic to have these tests conducted, I think it is an extremely good idea considering there are tens of millions more pre-diabetics walking around and have no idea they are either already or becoming insulin resistant. Taking preventative action now would likely slow down the expected diabetes boom coming over the next few decades.

You can certainly appreciate the "been there, done that" feel of this book which does a fabulous job of removing the mystery and awe out of diabetes for good. Whether you have just been diagnosed with diabetes or even if you are a decades-long veteran living with the disease, there is plenty of useful statistics and data to keep you occupied for hours as you learn all the ins and outs of diabetes.

But I have one pretty major concern about the book that makes me say it is "almost" a comprehensive look at the subject of diabetes. While there is plenty of discussion about carbohydrates and how controlling your intake of them whether they are in the form of sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes, or otherwise in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes, the lack of a real sense of urgency about trying to keep them limited as a means for managing diabetes is not emphasized heavily enough and given the significance it deserves. All the latest research indicates that reducing carb intake can bring about permanent control of diabetes and you just don't hear this message stated explicitly in this book.

For a book like this about diabetes releasing in the year 2007, how can you totally ignore the many years of clinical studies (like this one) that have been conducted by valient researchers like Dr. Eric Westman from Duke University and Dr. Mary C. Vernon from the University of Kansas and the co-author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution? What about Dr. Steve Phinney or Dr. Jay Wortman? And let's not forget Dr. Mary Gannon and Dr. Frank Nuttall, too! I could easily continue on with many more names, but these are enough to get you started.

Not only have these amazing researchers shown the vital statistics for their diabetic patients become normalized, but many of them were able to come completely off of all their prescription medicines for good. GASP! How can this be? You'd never know this was possible if you only read this book because there was no mention of ending diabetes drug use in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes--NONE! Just the strong "now take your medicines regularly along with a low-fat diet" message that diabetics have had to suffer through long enough.

Where was the promotion of this major "cure" for diabetes which was highlighted nationally by Adam Campbell in Men's Health magazine in November 2006 found within the pages of this diabetes book, hmmm? The glaring absence of this cutting edge information about diabetes is like talking to someone about how to drive a car that doesn't have a steering wheel. Sure, you may get somewhere, but not necessarily where you want to go.

Furthermore, there was nary a single mention of the most famous diabetes expert who has implored a low-carb solution to his Type 1 diabetes for decades--the amazing Dr. Richard Bernstein! This man has done more to add quality of life and even saved the lives of millions of diabetics through his bestselling books and personal practice. However, if you read Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes it's as if Dr. Bernstein and his common sense strategies for tackling diabetes don't even exist. Shame on them for this grave omission!

To be honest, it was quite scary reading over and over again in this supposedly all-encompassing book on the topic of diabetes that people with this disease need to consume as much as 60 percent carbohydrates daily, including regular servings of sugar if they want it "in moderation!" Say what?! ARGH!

Are they trying to make these people get sicker and sicker?! What kind of irresponsible advice like this is being given to diabetics?! Yikeseroo! How about just giving them a little arsenic "in moderation" while you're at it, too? Sheeez!

Yet, at the same time, the authors emphasize the critical nature of carbohydrate reduction in the management of diabetes. So which is it? I understand we are all different with a variety of factors that will work for the individual person, but come on! I'm a big believer in people finding what works for them in weight loss and health management at my blog, but I see no downside for diabetics who want to control their disease naturally through diet by livin` la vida low-carb.

What will happen if diabetics decide to take the low-carb pathway to reversing the effects of their disease is they will get better than they've ever been before, seeing their A1C drop into "normal" range and staying there, lower their blood pressure, significantly drop their triglycerides, raise their HDL cholesterol levels, and ward off many of the inevitable future health issues due to their diabetes. Not a bad deal if you ask me!

Of course, the lack of any information about the low-carb nutritional approach to combat diabetes in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes may have more to do with the American Diabetes Association and their ill-advised recommendations than anything else. It is quite clear that Dr. Jackson and Tenderich relied heavily on their skewed advice for diabetics.

You see the unmistakable fingerprints of their needless warnings about lowering LDL cholesterol (with even MORE medications such as statins--EEEK!), avoiding saturated fat, lowering salt intake, and controlling fat, calories, and portion sizes in page after page of this book. It really was more than a little nauseating to read all of this information while "low-carb" was nowhere to be found. I can't tell you how incredibly disappointing this was to me because diabetics who read this book will be left in the dark about what very well could be the solution to their disease.

While I certainly can appreciate what Dr. Richard Jackson and Amy Tenderich have done with their book Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes to help educate people with this disease get the basic information they may be looking for, it is the blatant omission of critical information about low-carb as a viable treatment option for diabetes that has me gravely concerned.

And if you are diabetic, you deserve to be armed with all the facts so you really can "outlive your diabetes." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Type II Diabetes Diet Book
Although the book is very well written and seems to offer hope to diabetics, my endocrinologist refuses to support my efforts to lose weight using this diet. She asserts that I could suffer kidney damage from being in ketosis.I am self-supporting and am planning on retiring next year. I cannot take a chance that my doctor would refuse to treat me if I became ill as a result of disregarding her recommendations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get your life back with this book!!!
This book is changing my life. After watching my weight creep up, up, up for the past 8 years and dealing with the usual results...high blood pressure, high cholesterol, clothes not fitting, depression, and most recently, mild type-2 diabetes, I got my hands on this book and I now have a clear understanding of what I've been doing to my body and what foods I need to really watch.By following the book's guidelines I've been able to lose 14 pounds in about 5 weeks. I still have a ways to go but I'm confident that I'll be able to accomplish my goal. And, without hunger. Even if you're not (yet) diabetic but need to lose some unwanted pounds, I guarantee you'll be able to quickly do it with these guidelines. After my fantastic results so far, my doctor is ordering a copy and will be recommending it to other patients. One of the biggest things I learned..."Sugar is the #1 poison!"...which it states throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me!
When I first looked at this book, I thought there's no way - how can I go without bread, rice, pasta, etc. After thinking about it for a couple of weeks I decided to give it a try.I loved it.I truly never missed the processed foods and surprisingly was never hungry.I feel like my diet is much more nutritionally sound than what I had been eating, and after the first couple of weeks I had pretty much trained myself what and how much to eat.I've lost 18 pounds so far and a lot of it has been the "stubborn belly fat".Couldn't be happier and feel great.I think that as much as following the diet you need to include the exercise, which is talked about in the book. This diet may not be for everyone, but as someone who has been unsuccessful with weight loss, even with exercise, it's been a Godsend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Your Figures for My Figure Just Don't Figure
I was initially very excited to read this book, based upon most of the reviews as well as the preliminary information I read. However, after carefully reading the information, I'm afraid I cannot recommend this book to anyone else in good conscience, due to the issues I point out in the following note, which was e-mailed to the author at the address given in the book (and subsequently returned as "undeliverable," as the e-mail listed in the book is apparently incorrect or no longer working).

Not only didn't the figures from the book's Daily Meal Plans add up (which as you can see from my note below, were WELL beyond their stated limit of 40g of carbohydrates per day, even for a partial list of items from their very own recipes), but the e-mail itself was returned as undeliverable at the address listed on page 149 of the book (ezrin-ctrs@aol.com).

If the daily menus contained in the book don't even conform to the author's very own stated requirements and even the author's e-mail address is incorrectly listed, why in the world would a reader ever entrust their own health and well being to this dietary program?

I assure you I am in no way connected to any other dietary program of any kind, nor do I have any ax to grind against either the authors or their Insulin Control Diet program.I'm just a guy very recently diagnosed with a condition of "Type II Diabetes" whose doctor recommended weight loss as a solution and who turned first to this book in order to try to find it.

I even gave the authors the benefit of the doubt by trying to contact them based upon the information they gave in the book to obtain clarification on the apparent inconsistencies in the text, in case my observations were incorrect. But as I mentioned, I was unable to receive a response, due to the apparently inaccurate listing of the e-mail address for the author.

I am extremely disappointed in the book, not only due to its incomplete or inconsistent information, but also due to its extremely haphazard presentation.

My note to the author (returned as undeliverable) is included below.

    Dr. Ezrin,

I am a 46-year-old male recently diagnosed with Type-II Diabetes and was excited to discover your "Type 2 Diabetes Diet Book," since it was written from the perspective of an endocrinologist. While the program does seem to make sense overall, what is most perplexing to me is how you arrive at a daily carbohydrate intake limit of 40g for your meal plans (which you say the daily meal plans maintain).

You mention several times throughout the book that a standard serving of fruit consists of 15g of carbohydrate (also referenced in the Appendix on pp. 303- 304).Since each of the meal plans consist of 2 standard servings of fruit (or even 2 ½, such as in the example I give below), this means that fruit alone counts for a full 75% - 94% (30g - 37.5g) of the daily carbohydrate intake amount, leaving only 10g carbohydrate for all the rest of the foods combined throughout the day.

As an example, following is the carbohydrate breakdown for Day Two of the Insulin Diet Meal Plan (from p. 135), based entirely upon the carbohydrate figures referenced in the Appendix:

    Breakfast

Decaffeinated coffee- (not in Appendix)- 0g?
    1 soft-cooked egg- 0.6g
1 cup chicken bouillon (not in Appendix, but listed separately on p. 243)- 1g
    1 peach- 15g

    Lunch

Iced coffee (not in Appendix)- 0g?
    Salmon Salad Sandwich- 5oz (1tbs chopped onion- 0.6g; mayonnaise- 1g; lettuce- 1g)
Salad (not defined) with Low-Cal Vinaigrette (iceberg lettuce- 2.9g; Vinaigrette dressing- 6.6g)
Gelatin (why not specifically state "sugar-free" here??? I'm assuming it is...) with D-Zerta topping- 0g?

    Snack (afternoon or evening)

    1 ¼ cup watermelon cubes- 15g

    Dinner

    Decaffeinated coffee- 0?
Chinese Fish Steaks- (1/2 cup chicken bouillon- .5g; mushrooms- NOT EVEN LISTED ON THE VEGETABLES LIST IN THE APPENDIX!- 0.5G?; soy sauce- NOT LISTED IN THE APPENDIX- 0.5G?)
Beans with Basil (It doesn't specify the KIND of beans. However, based upon the Appendix under "Vegetables," `1/2 cup of cooked beans shows 15g carbohydrate)
Salad (not defined) with Low-Cal Vinaigrette (iceberg lettuce- 2.9g; Vinaigrette dressing- 6.6g)
    1 cup beef bouillon- 1g
Gelatin & Fruit (again, it doesn't specify "sugar-free," but I'm assuming so.However, even ¼ cup of fruit is still 7.5g carbohydrate, no matter how you slice it)

You separately caution to allocate fruit portions sparingly, and yet even in this ONE DAY of the meal plan, the fruit portions alone that you specify already account for a full 37.5g of carbohydrates of the 40g maximum daily intake of carbohydrate that you recommend (in fact, you even state a recommended limit of between only 20 - 35 grams of carbohydrate in any 24-hour period elsewhere in the book).

The total amount of carbohydrate of all the other ingredients combined for this one-day's meal plan alone (the carb amounts for which are all pulled from the book's Appendix) which even then only constitute a partial list, based upon what the recipes call for, comes to 46.7g (already over your 24-hour maximum limit). When added to the amount of fruit indicated, this makes a carbohydrate consumption of 84.2g for this one-day's meal plan alone- well over TWICE the daily carbohydrate intake you recommend throughout the book (FOUR-TIMES the amount, if you go by your lower recommendation of 20g carbs per day).

Examples from the text, for reference:

    p. 109, paragraph 2:"For the duration of your weight loss period, we ask that you limit your total carbohydrate intake to 20 to 35 grams."(while it doesn't specify "per day" here, elsewhere you do indicate no more than 40 grams during any 24-hour period).

    p. 109, paragraph 3:"In other words, more than 40 grams of carbohydrate in any form will trigger your overproduction of insulin and return you to the weight gain cycle you know so well." (again, based upon other references, this indicates "per-day").

p.111, paragraph 3:"Be advised, however, that regardless of total calories consumed, carbohydrate intake for the day should never exceed 40 grams."

Which begs the following question:"How can any reader reasonably trust the advice given, when the numbers for your own daily meal plans don't even come close to remaining within your stated limitations for daily carbohydrate intake?

Secondly, it took me over an hour-and-a-half to determine the actual carbohydrate amounts listed for this one day's meal plan listed above alone, since it required me to constantly flip back-and-forth between the meal plan listing (which DOESN'T indicate any carbohydrate/protein/fat information), the recipes (which are also difficult to track down and which also don't list any carbohydrate/protein/fat information for any of the ingredients) and the Appendix (which doesn't include information on all the items in the recipes and, even if it does, does not give information equivalent to the amounts the recipes call for).

It would be a FAR more usable resource if the information was:

    a. more comprehensive, including carb/protein/fat amounts listed right along-side meal plan and recipe ingredients;

b.more logically presented, so that a reader doesn't have to shift back-and-forth between the meal plans, the recipes (which are also hard to locate), and random information sprinkled throughout the text itself (such as the information on boullion, which is not in the index, but only in a separate section I was able to locate) and

c.constructed to stay within it's own set of stated parameter guidelines.

For example, the appendix lists "1 celery stalk" as having 2g carbohydrates, but the recipe for "Salmon Salad Sandwich" calls for "1 tbsp of chopped celery."How are you supposed to make the conversion between "1 celery stalk" and "1 tbsp of chopped celery?," in order to evaluate that "all-important" carb-per-day total? And while "1 tbsp of "chopped chives" is listed in the Appendix, "1 tbsp of onion" called for in the recipe is not and "green pepper," which is also called for in the recipe, is not even on the Appendix under vegetables at all! (nor, by the way, are mushrooms, which are called for in a separate recipe).

The fundamental question is this:If "more than 40 grams of carbohydrate in any form will trigger your overproduction of insulin and return you to the weight gain cycle you know so well," as you state on page 109 and your own meal plan doesn't even maintain those guidelines, then how on Earth can the Insulin Diet program that you recommend possibly accomplish the weight loss goals that you claim? The figures simply don't add up.Either your statements regarding a daily limit of 40g carbohydrate are incorrect, or else your meal plans simply do not work, according to the parameters you yourself have indicated.

I'd love to receive clarification on this issue at your earliest convenience, since I do want to get a handle on the effects of added weight on the symptoms for Type II Diabetes. However, I can only do that if I have complete confidence in the logic of the information that's being presented. As it is, my confidence in the program is shaky, since the figures on how to improve my figure just don't figure.

I look forward to your reply.

    Best,
    R. McGowan

OK, this is less about the book than it is about the diet.It works.I have tried everything including Atkins and Weight Watchers.I had 15 pounds to lose. When my doctor said elevated blood sugar was the only thing he could find to explain why I wasn't losing the weight, I bought this book. Now, it is NOT an 'eat all you want of certain foods' diet. And sometimes I've been hungry. But it is easy to follow, not the least complicated and there's no measuring (aside from knowing what 3-4 ounces of meat/chicken/fish looks like, and 1/2 cup of fruit/vegetable.)I'm down 14 1/2 pounds. One caviat: since I didn't have a lot of weight to lose (I'm guessing this is the reason) it's taken me awhile. But it's the only thing that has worked.Right now I'm slowly re-introducing grains (bread, brown rice) and the loss continues (this was a problem with Atkins - the minute I ate a dinner roll, the weight came back). It really works. ... Read more
