Extractions: SEARCH THE GAZETTE Ivan Alexandrovitch Tcherepnin, senior lecturer on music and director of Harvard's Electronic Music Studio for more than 25 years, died April 11 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He was 55. Born in Paris, Tcherepnin had many musical influences, including two close relatives who were composers: grandfather Nikolai and father Alexander. His mother, Lee Hsien-Ming, was the first woman pianist to graduate from Shanghai Conservatory. After earning degrees from Harvard (A.B. 1964; A.M. 1969), Tcherepnin studied in Europe, and then moved to San Francisco. He quickly became known for his creativity in the new field of musical electronics. In 1996, Tcherepnin won the University of Louisville Grawmeyer Award for Musical Composition for his Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra. The piece premiered in 1995 at Sanders Theatre with violinist Lynn Chang '75, cellist Yo-Yo Ma '76, and the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra under David Commanday '76. Tcherepnin leaves his wife Sue-Ellen Hershman-Tcherepnin; a daughter, Sarina, of Cambridge; sons Nicholas of New York City, Stefan of Watertown, and Sergei of Falmouth; brothers Serge of Paris and Peter of New York City; and a grandson.

Ktesibios, the son of a Greek barber, was fascinated by pneumatics and wrote an early treatise on the use of hydraulic systems for powering mechanical devices. His most famous invention, the Hydraulis, used water to regulate the air pressure inside an organ. A small cistern called the pnigeus was turned upside down and placed inside a barrel of water. A set of pumps forced air into the pnigeus, forming an air reservoir, and that air was channeled up into the organ's action. Greek Aeolian harp. This may be considered the first automatic instrument. It was named for Aeolus , the Greek god of the wind. The instrument had two bridges over which the strings passed. The instrument was placed in a window where air current would pass, and the strings were activated by the wind current. Rather than being of different lengths, the strings were all the same length and tuned to the same pitch, but because of different string thicknesses, varying pitches could be produced. 5th-6th centuries BC , Pythagorus discovered numerical ratios corresponding to intervals of the musical scale. He associated these ratios with what he called "harmony of the spheres."

Extractions: Dept. of Music, UC Santa Barbara Squeak is a new implementation of the Smalltalk programming environment; it includes: Squeak was developed at Apple Labs, and has been ported to a variety of computers (including most flavors of UNIX and Windows). Compared to other Smalltalk systems, Squeak has 4 important features: The Squeak system includes an integral Smalltalk-to-C translator; it is used to generate the Squeak virtual machine (VM), the source for which is actually written in Smalltalk and then translated and compiled. The translator can also be used, for example, to accelerate the inner loops of signal processing functions. Early benchmarks demonstrate the ability to perform 10 voices of real-time FM or plucked string synthesis on modest hardware (Apple PowerBook 5300c). There are integrated applications in Squeak for Web serving and interaction, real-time sound and music synthesis, MIDI performance and scheduling, text-to-speech synthesis, internetworking, and 2- and 3-D graphics.
