Functional objectives became our school's new buzz phrase. Based on my experience of orienting the ESL students' communicative ability toward an informal audience, I have discovered and since adopted an approach which I feel, although effectively encompasses both fluency and accuracy, is more fluency-oriented. The importance lies not only in recognizing this dichotomy, but in accepting and working with.
