Extractions: In Estonia we know 50 settlement sites and almost 20 burial sites of the CWC (Kriiska 2000, 70). More than half of the settlements have been found during the last decade. The CWC antiquities cannot be easily found as they do not offer many finds and they have a weak cultural layer. That is why most of the CWC settlement sites have been come upon quite by chance in the course of excavating other sites, so they are usually mixed with finds either from earlier or later periods (Jaanits 1966, 63). The CWC bearers developed new material culture of which the most common finds are pottery and boat-axes. The best possible indicator of the CWC pottery is fibrous impressions on the surfaces of the vessels, as these kind of impressions do not occur in any other pottery type in Estonian prehistory (Kriiska 2000, 70). As to the ornament, the most typical ones are spruce twig motif especially on the early corded ware and cord impressions more present on the late corded ware. Ornament is present mostly on the upper parts of the vessels (Jaanits et al. 1982, 108-109). The stone material consists boatformed battle axes of which the earliest type is the continental. This is alike on a large area where the culture has spread. Only later local axe forms were established. Apart from boat axes there are other stone material to be found, for example arrowheads, chisels, scrapers, knives, stone processing remains, all of flint, and four square wedges (Jaanits et al. 1982, 107; Kriiska 2000, 70).

Extractions: Abstract INTRODUCTION The essential settlement area in Stone Age north-eastern Estonia was the region of the lower reaches of the Narva River (Fig. 1). In the landscape, it is situated on the plateau of north-eastern Estonia, reaching from the border of the North Estonian Glint to Joaoru in Narva and the coastal shallow north of the town. Over 20 Stone Age settlement sites have been found from this area of about 200 km The lower reaches of the Narva River has been one of the most important places of research in Stone Age archaeology and most of our archaeologists specialised on that period have worked there. In the years 1950 to 1960 the current jubilarian Lembit Jaanits carried out many successful investigations there.
