"Look here," said the monk, as he took a cartoon illustration from the suitcase he always carries when he gives school sermons. It shows a girl about to empty her dust bin. "When we have rubbish, we need to dump it to keep our place clean, right? But there's another type of rubbish as well. It's in our mind and we need to dump that too." As soon as he finishes his sentence, the litter moves from the girl's hand into the trash can. The students stop chattering and burst out laughing. The monk takes out more paper puppets for his other religious messages. The children are hooked and stay attentive until he is finished. "I've never thought listening to dharma could be fun and so easy to understand," said Pitipong Phasuk, a Mathoyom One student at Kasetsart Demonstration School.

Extractions: June, 2001 Move Over! Teenage Manners Coming Through , written in consultation with the author's high-school class, has a cheeky wit designed to appeal today's young people. Nevertheless, the intent is serious: to provide advice on etiquette that teens need but are not getting anywhere else. This handbook covers the state of teenage manners today, the way manners have changed in both style and importance, and practical tools for becoming more mannerly. Chapters address these issues: why manners are important, unintended teenage rudeness, eating etiquette, public courtesies, teenage fashion, and the art of growing up. "As a secondary school principal I spend an enormous amount of time with teenagers, and, yes, their manners often need improving. Move Over: Teenage Manners Coming Through was written with teenager input and offers help in an easy-to-read and down-to-earth way with unique insights and humor. They'll actually read it." Extractions: By Diane E. Lewis, Globe Staff, 1/07/2001 As a child, Sue Fox's father taught her how to use a knife and fork correctly. A naval officer with impeccable manners, he also taught her the importance of "thank you" and "please." Years later, Fox turned her own interest in etiquette into a business: She taught teenage girls how to walk, talk, and eat and helped boost their self-esteem. Still, Fox's business lagged until she placed an ad in a local newspaper offering adult social etiquette classes at local restaurants. "I received 40 calls the first day the ad ran," recalls Fox, president of Etiquette Survival Inc. "That was in 1995. I began to get corporate clients who wanted me to teach their executives how to entertain in specific parts of the country or world." Flash forward seven years to 2001. Fox's company now counts among its clients such firms as Guidant and Texaco, which last year sent her to New Orleans to teach a continental dining and etiquette course to newly hired foreign and American MBA students. Manners may be all the more important today, particularly in a world where the next deal is as likely to be made in Japan or the Middle East as the United States. But for all of our gains in paving the way to new markets overseas, Americans continue to trail their foreign counterparts in the fine art of etiquette, Fox says.

One South Florida School Gives Etiquette Lessons HOLLYWOOD, Fla., 5:12 p.m. EDT July 12, 2001 "Mind your manners" that's what our parents used to tell us. Now some adults complain that today's children don't have any manners at all. Channel 10's Education Team visited one South Florida etiquette school to see how students are learning lessons on manners. Students at Nativity Catholic School in Hollywood not only tackle the three R's, they also learn the ABCs of elegant dining like how to be a gentleman at the table and how to use a soup spoon. "I think it's very important in today's society," principal Elena Ortiz said. "Parents are so busy and they don't have the time to teach them like they used to. I think it's important to bring that into the school." Joann Sewell, director of the Protocol School of Broward teaches the course.

One reason for development of this area was to provide a space away from park playgrounds and playing fields where dogs could be free to run without disrupting families with children. You may bring your kids to the OLA, but please be aware that the very fact that there is a pack of dogs running around changes the dynamics a bit. Not all dogs in the park have children in their homes. Some of them have not been exposed to kids, or may even simply not like them. In the interest of keeping the OLA a safe, fun place for everyone, please watch your children closely and read the following recommendations. Children are susceptible to contracting intestinal parasites in areas where urine and feces are present. This is why dogs are often prohibited from playgrounds and schoolyards.
