It centers on a radical view of the freedom of human choice and action, and it emphasizes in various ways the uniqueness of the individual person. The existential tradition includes psychologists, theologians, novelists, playwrights, poets, and others who have expounded or made use of existentialist themes. Our course will focus primarily on the philosophical views that underlie these themes and their various expressions, but there will also be some readings from literature other than philosophy. The main themes to be discussed include freedom and responsibility; the role of passion, or the non-rational, in human choice; the nature of consciousness; the relation of persons, as conscious beings, to non-conscious things and to other persons; and existential analyses of such human phenomena as anguish, self-deception, and love. These topics will be explored through some of the writings of Ortega, Dostoevsky, Kierkegaard, Sartre, and others. The most extensive part of our study will deal with the existential metaphysics of

We will conclude the course by contrasting the notions of action and virtue found in the Tao Te Ching Texts: Robert C. Solomon, ed., Existentialism (New York: The Modern Library, 1974). Lao-Tzu, Tao Te Ching (Indianapolis: Hackett, 1993). Assorted materials on reserve in the library. Grading: Tests Quizzes Writing Assignments Class Participation A = 88-100 B = 78-87 C = 68-77 D = 58-67 F Tests : Three tests, including the final. If you miss one of the first two tests, a harder version of it will be offered at the end of the semester. Only one of these two tests can be made up. Quizzes : About once a week, class will begin with an unannounced quiz worth ten points. Quizzes will consist of one or two questions taken from the previous lecture and/or the reading assignment for that day. Missed quizzes cannot be made up. Thus our first task will be to give content to the idea of existentialism, and one way to do this is to look at Hegel, the thinker who is lurking in the background, in one way or another, of much of existentialist thought. Many of the themes of existentialism center around the notion of the individual. They include the following: the authentic individual, the relation of the individual to the divine, and the relation of the individual to society. Since existentialism considers the individual in the context of the notions of alienation and autonomy, these ideas shall be contrasted with the more frequently discussed notions of free will and determinism. On February 23, 1883 I was born in Oldenburg, a son of Karl Jaspers, the former sheriff and later bank director, and bis wife Henriette, nee Tantzen. I passed a well-guarded childhood in the company of my brothers and sisters, either in the country with my grandparents or at the seaside, sheltered by loved and revered parents, led by the authority of my father, brought up with a regard for truth and loyalty, for achievement and reliability, yet without church religion (except for the scanty formalities of the Protestant confession). I attended the high school of my home town, and from 1901 the University. My path was not the normal one of professors of philosophy. I did not intend to become a doctor of philosophy by studying philosophy (I am in fact a doctor of medicine) nor did L by any means, intend originally to qualify for a professorship by a dissertation on philosophy. To decide to become a philosopher seemed as foolish to me as to decide to become a poet. Since my schooldays, however, I was guided by philosophical questions. Philosophy seemed to me the supreme, even the sole, concern of man. Yet a certain awe kept me from making it my profession. Instead I felt that I should look for my vocation in practical life. At first I chose the study of law with the intention of becoming an attorney. At the same time I attended classes in philosophy. That proved disappointing. The lectures offered nothing of what I sought in philosophy: neither the fundamental experiences of Being, nor guidance for inner action or self-improvement, but rather, questionable opinions making claim to scientific validity. The study of law left me unsatisfied, because I did not know the aspects of life which it serves. I perceived only the intricate mental juggling with fictions that did not interest me. What I sought was perception of reality. Concern with art and poetry were incomplete substitutes; so even was an enthusiastic journey to Italy to see
