Extractions: Interactive Entertainment Systems - Industry The Interactive Entertainment Industry, or Games Industry is an important and growing part of the world economy. Some statistics have shown in the past that its revenue can surpass that of the Cinema box office. It is also a significant part of the UK economy. While it has many parts it can arguably be divided into two key divisions, which I shall call for the sake of argument The Computer Games Industry, and The Video Games Industry. Computer games are typically written to run on general purpose computers, and are played in a (home) office style evironment. Video games are written for special purpose hardware and are played in a domestic environment - typically on a television. The are important and growing differences between the way the industries operate, the product types the two industries produce, the implementation of games for the two industries and the economics. The technical differences will be explored later in the course as apropriate topics are taught. It is generally not possible to obtain the tools required to develop console games without a contract with the platform owner, and the right to publish games is restricted by use of trademarks, trade-secrets and technical mechanisms. Use of cryptography and some fairly extreme obfuscation is used. Platform owners are often vigorously litigious in defending their control of the platform. The main reason for this is that the margins on the platform hardware are very tight at best, and revenue is generated from licence fees for each game sold. To ensure that the publics perception of the platform is good, quality is strictly controlled, and a strict set of regulations must be adhered to in order to get a game published. By contrast, the tools required to build computer games are often available freely, and no license is required to publish.

Extractions: by Michael Ellis He gave hope to white people everywhere who thought hip-hop music was simply a black thing. Every high school daydreamer back in the summer of 1990 knew every word to his debut smash album, To The Extreme, but would never admit to now. In 1991, he won the Best New Artist award at the American Music Awards, and was named as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World by People magazine. Vanilla Ice is back. After almost a decade of being out of the spotlight, one of the biggest pop icons of all-time is back in the spotlight. Where did he go? Vanilla Ice, a.k.a. Robert Van Winkle, has been everywhere. He has been on the motorcross circuit, professional jet-ski racing, got married, had a kid and opened up his own extreme sports shop in Miami fittingly called "To the Extreme." Now, Ice is touring to push his newest album, Hard to Swallow. "It's a new musical adventure for me," Ice said. "I just got bored with drum machines and wanted something more exciting and challenging." Armed with a live band and massive amounts of energy, Ice and noted producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Sepultura, Limp Bizkit) spent hours in the studio, discovering and evolving a stunning "hardcore hip hop" blend of street sounds. "I was looking for a really hard edge," Ice said. "Something completely different, off key, something that's not been done. It took a while to find it, but the good news is, we finally did. It's not rock n' roll. It's not heavy metal. It's not hip-hop. It's called 'skate rock' and only a handful of people are doing it."
