Boring, Depressing
Maybe it has to do with the fact that I am not a mother but a 25 year old trying to get on her feet, but I did not find this book to have many redeeming qualities.The characters were stereotypical, predictable, and tiring. The only half-way memorable one is Becky. There is no plot besides "let's see how miserable we can make motherhood out to be." After reading this book, I am put off by the idea of becoming a mother.Like I said, maybe you have to be a mother to enjoy - that's the only reason I can come up with for other numerous rave reviews.

If anyone can put a good angle on a story it's Jennifer Weiner.She is a great writer.

Her book Little Earthquakes is an incredible - honest story about the expectations and realities of motherhood.This book will make you laugh, it will make you cry and it will make you say that character reminds me of myself.

In Little Earthquakes, four women are bonded together by trials and triumphs of motherhood.More specifically, what bonds them is that none of them thought motherhood would be how it's actually turning out.Each woman thought motherhood would be this blissful image that they had since being little girls and that they would be the best mother ever. But life changes dramatically for each lady as expectaions meet realities of motherhood. Each woman must learn to adjust to the effects that motherhood has on their bodies, marriage, work and relationships if they are ever to be content being mothers.

Becky is dealing with self-image issues and the most annoying mother-in-law.Kelly is a perfectionist who is supressing painful family memories. Ayinde is trying to be a better mother than her own mother but her marriage is falling apart.Lia is looking for solace and must learn how to start over again.

I really enjoyed this book.By the time the book ends you will feel like part of their circle.At times I was so entranced; I forgot I was on my couch and not really the 5th person of the circle.

This book is a great read for any woman or man who wants a peek into the reality of motherhood.

Why Women Love This Book...May Contain Spoilers!
I loved this book. Yes, the women did whine a lot in the book, and there were some unrealistic parts, but that's why it is a work of fiction. You do not always have to completely identify with the characters.

They all noticed one or two things about each other to *wish* for which is something women do all of the time,i.e. Becky's curls, Kelly's husband helping with the baby, Ayinde's beautiful looks, etc.

Becky-I loved her character. The reason I believe she changed her mind was to make sure her mother in law would stay in their lives. Even though she didn't necessarily like the woman, it is her husbands mother and as a wife, you do what you can to keep your family together. You may want to kick certain family members out, but there are some things you have to do!

Ayinde-has money, has a husband who makes a mistake of cheating and yes she does take him back. When children are involved women will do anything to make their families work, not that I necessarily agree with her doing so.

Kelly-did not like her attitude at all...but her background explained it to me. Some women do actually have a hard time communicating with their husbands, which is something that is foreign to me but I'm sure that's how some relationships are.

Lia-so many 18 yr olds that live in small towns dream big. I can relate to this feeling considering I grew up in a small town. Given her relationship w/ her mother was not great, and her age,I understood why she acted the way she did. Granted, it was not the best way to leave but its something a young girl would do.

Little Earthquakes was a Big Hit
I LOVED this book.I just got it back from people I've borrowed it to and can't wait to re-read it.The characters are really relatable and real. If you've never read a Jennifer Weiner book, this would be a great one to start with!Of course, if you love her books, then you'll definately love this one!

Earthquakes, flood, and danger
When Jonathan Palmer and his family went on a camping trip to Magpie Island, they didn't expect to have the adventure of their lives.Mrs. Palmer injured her ankle, so Mr. Palmer had to take her to the hospital, leaving Jonathan and his dog Moose to babysit for his physically handicapped sister.

About an hour after his parents left, Jonathan noticed how quiet the island had become.No magpies cawed, no leaves rustled overhead.Suddenly Moose barked his warning bark, and Jonathan heard a deep rumbling like thunder in the distance.When the earthquake struck, Jonathan and his sister were thrown off their feet.The downed trees were hard to deal with, but then the river began to rise, flooding the island.

A Kid's Review
I like the book, Earthquake Terror. It taught me to trust other people because Abby trusted Johnathan - and it was a lie - because he promised that she could have a chocolate cupcake and she could lick the wrapper - and he lied. Well, he sorta lied - because the earthquake struck and that's how he lied and he promised her 6 rounds of go fish and 3 juice boxes. And Johnathon helped Abby climb up the roots of a big redwood tree, and the big redwood tree fell on the camper and smashed his homework - and he said, "My teacher is not going to believe this at all!"That's crazy.Johnathan is good at sports like swimming and he's a good runner and a good baseball player.And Abby whines a lot and she complains a lot to Johnathan cause sometimes he lies to her and she's not gonna trust him this time.You should read the book.

This story was exciting because it was adventuresome and it was really worrisome.It's like you didn't know what was going to happen next.And sometimes you think that it's not going to turn out a good story - but it did.Like sometimes it was scary, emotional, and sad - but it was really fun to read and listen to.you should tell your friends about it. I would like to read another one of these books because it was really exciting.You think some books are really boring - but this was really exciting.

Great Explanation For Kids
The books in this series explain things that kids wonder about and need to know in a way they can understand. Young elementary kids will learn from these as a read a loud and enjoy them in one sitting. I would even go as far to say that kids a little older (grade 3-5) would enjoy these in one sitting as an independent read and vocabulary builder. You can easily plan a study unit around each of these books or use them as an addition to the curriculum you alread use. The photos are a great plus as well. I recommend using this series as a summer education builder. Use one book each week as a theme throughout your summer. Never stop learning!

Terrific book!
Just read this with my 6 year old. What a terrific book! It is very well-written and the illustrations are also top-notch. We learned a lot. It was very interesting. Would love to read more books by this author. This was the best book on the subject (for this age) that we've read.

Very well done
This is a very well done book on earthquakes aimed at the early elementary school crowd.It's very thorough but enjoyable.The language is not dumbed down like many children's books, but difficult terms and concepts are explained in a concrete way, such as the comparison of the earth and its crust to an apple and its peel.Several examples of real earthquakes are presented, describing the level of damage and destruction along with the Richter scale measurement.As would be expected, the main section of the text ends with safety tips.

The illustrations are gorgeous and vibrant.They take the book from good to outstanding.They really give you a feel for what the text is describing.

Finally, at the very back of the book, there is a page with additional earthquake facts, just neat little "did you know" sort of things that weren't part of the basic earthquake information.There's also a page listing the top ten most destructive earthquakes in terms of the death toll.

I have another book on earthquakes aimed at this age range, and it's very lackluster.This one, however, is outstanding, with very little room for improvement.

Earthquake facts and pictures.
Seymour Simon's 1991 book gives an excellent and terse overview of the important ideas about earthquakes. With key terms defined simply but accurately, all accentuated by large color photographic depictions of the effects of earthquakes, Simon explains the pertinent information: what causes earthquakes, what happens during an earthquake, and the different types of earthquakes.

The book can be read from cover to cover, or bit by bit; each two-page spread stands fairly solidly on its own. The impact of the damage earthquakes can inflict is immediately apparent when the book opens with a stunning photograph of the way an earthquake turned "railroad tracks into twisted ribbons of steel." The most amazing photo in the book shows the way a wooden fence was "broken and offset eight feet" by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Simon takes what could be a very frightening concept for a young child and explains it in such a way as to make earthquakes more logical and less arbitrary. The final page of the book might be the best place for a nervous child to start reading, as Simon gives some suggestions of what to do during an earthquake. The book closes with the calming reassurance that the chances of being hurt in an earthquake are very slim.

This book does not include a great deal of detail, but I think it does a good job of what it is intended to do: introduce a child to the subject of earthquakes. The photographs are my favorite part.

Earthquakes galore... facts a-few
Children living in areas where natural disasters, such as earthquakes, do not occur may not fully understand the true destructive powers of this earth-shaking phenomenon.This book does its best to render earthquakes understandable.To do so, it incorporates full pages of color photographs of destroyed buildings and houses.Having been published in 1991 originally, the book may have originally served as an answer to those children wishing to know more about the notorious 1989 San Francisco quake.I myself was 11 at the time, and curious about this bizarre force of nature.This book does much to show a variety of different quakes from around the world, and its large graphs are very helpful as well.Yet something about the presentation is displeasing to the eye.Full page pictures have no border and seemingly slip off the page.They tend to show houses destroyed by quakes without giving much thought to showing the earthquake-resistant houses being built at the time.Also, there isn't a single footnote or credit at the end of the book.Seymour Simon is notorious for his steadfast refusal to cite his sources in his non-fiction books.There is no denying that this is an interesting topic.I especially liked the informative section in the back that tells the reader how best to survive an earthquake on their own.And this book would read well in class, though perhaps students should look at it personally themselves to better understand the graphs and maps included.However, I urge those wanting a complete earthquake source to search out better cited non-fiction books, if they can.

Easy to understand information
This is a very good beginning book on the subject for children. It begins with scientific information about how earthquakes occur, and then goes through what may happen during an earthquake, such as buildings falling down, fires, gas leaks, etc. It goes into further particulars, such as how it feels to be in an earthquake, and what safety measures to take.

The illustrations are very simple, and not especially appealing, but they do help illustrate the points well.

Hard Cover Review
I had the chance to buy the 1957 hardback version used instead of getting the paperback. It is a fabulous book. I've learned a great deal about those three days in 1906.

The definitive book on the '06 Quake and Fire
Numerous writers and historians have told me that "The Earth Shook The Sky Burned" is still the definitive book on the events of 1906. Why have they told me this? Because my father wrote the book!

In any case, there is a reason the book has stayed in print for almost fifty years - it was meticulously researched and is an amazing pictorial essay. It is a must-have for anybody interested in those tragic and heroic days.

So long ago, but so relevent
I was fascinated with natural disasters when I was a child.I remember looking through this book, lying on my parent's bed, staring at the pictures of this horrible event.They haunted me then, and I can still see them in my mind's eye, these 35 years later.This is a story told with visuals, not dialogue.It is beautifully photographed, all without censure or special effects.The photos are grainy and some blurred, but capture the heart of the people of San Francisco, as it is broken and burned.Some images are difficult to see, and readers must use discretion if light of heart.Otherwise, I highly recommend it for anyone who has an interest in natural disasters. ... disappointing for children and adult
I read this with a group of 5th and 6th graders.We were all very disappointed with the plot and character development.Very slow moving and uninspired.

Earth Dragon
My 9yo daughter read this book in 2 days. She absolutely loved it. I had her read about 1906 accounts of the earthquake prior to reading this book. As she was reading I told her to think about the Haiti earhtquake victims and to try and make a connection between the 2 earthquakes.

Phenomenally outstanding book!
"The Earth Dragon Awakes" by Laurence Yep is a well written novel that has specific details and a good storyline. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. I would never give a book 5 stars because I always feel therecan be something revised to make the book better in many ways. I give it 4 stars because it's a good clean book which states facts and adds "lif" along with it. This Historical Fiction is about Chin and Henry friends who both love reading about the heroes in the comic books or "Penny Dreadfuls" as their parents call them. One day a crisis in San Francisco happens and Chin and Henry are looking for a hero to save the day. Laurence Yep an American author of Chinese decent has always felt disconnected from his Chinese culture which shows in Chin's character of how disconnected he feels from his Chinese Herritage. If you have read "Dragon Wings" this would be a recommended book. People that like historical fiction, history junkies, and kids of all ages. This is a great book that I think everyone should have a chance to read.

Look Out for the Earthquake
Look out for the earthquake! The Earth Dragon Awakes is one of the best books ever. It is mostly about two kids named Chin, and Henry trying to survive an earthquake. This is a serious book about a real-life event, the San Francisco earthquake. First the brothers are just living a normal life then all a sudden a earthquake comes. Luckily they survived the earthquake .Then after the earthquake, wait I can't tell that, but what ever you do don't take your eyes off that book. It is so good. Break your arm if you have to get it.

A hit with my grandson!
My 4-year-old grandson has developed an interest in volcanoes (He's his mother's boy!) and I was given the task of finding books for him.I found a few for young children, and although he is much younger than the age group recommended for this book, I have had a long-standing purchase history with Eyewitness Books, so I ordered it.It is his favorite of the books I got -- he loves the graphics and photos, and his Mom and brother read the text to him.He has favorite pages, and even looks for "toy volcanoes and earthquakes" when he's at the store with his family.

Nice book for young readers
Now that I have discovered the series of Eyewitness Books that I once purchased for my son when he was young (Can't believe he's beginning his senior year in college!), I enjoy going over them and reflecting on the value of this series for younger readers.

It is important that our youth understand the world around them--including a knowledge of science. This volume focuses on the volcano and earthquakes. Given the role--especially--of earthquakes in American history, this is a valuable volume.

The book begins with a basic point (Page 6): "Volcanoes and earthquakes are nature run wild."The first part of the work explores volcanoes. This includes the basics, including an examination of Vesuvius, what underlies the development of a volcano, volcanoes on other plants, and so on.

Then, a discussion of earthquakes. The basics: what they are, why they happen, what the consequences are.

All in all, a very nice introduction to these natural phenomena for younger readers (and parents might learn a whole bunch as well, just as I did).

This is one of the better DK �Eyewitness� books I�ve read.It contained a pleasant mix of hard science, accounts of sensationalistic disasters, and the effects on the environment / cultures.The usual mind-boggling amount of details and facts are accompanied by numerous pictures and drawings to keep younger and more mature readers interested.One oddity is that this ended on a seemingly odd topic--the role of gods and religion in people�s interpretation of volcanoes and earthquakes.Just prior to this the study of volcanoes, and improvements in detection / building codes had been addressed (a very forward-looking topic) but then the last page is about gods (a historical perspective topic).Whatever. ... The Untold Story .......
The author has created a much reveered book of the much covered, but not completely truthfully told, 1906 event.
Almost as soon as the dust began to settle, the facts were "ammended" to create a more publicly acceptable slant on the day: The number of people killed is still contested today, over 100 years since the event. The author puts forward her view, ably supported, as to why the figures of the day were inaccurate, and the effects that had.
Great book, one I'd recommend.

1906 Fire (Earthquake) of San Francisco

I received this book as a gift and I loved it then and still love it now. After seeing the PBS (television) show on this subject I became intrigued and wanted to learn more.
This book does not disappoint. It goes into great detail as to what really happened in 1906 (whether it was reported by the Media or not).

During the 1906 S.F Earthquake (aka: "The 1906 FIRE") the media was influenced by the politicians (& other institutions) , and this book shows what might have truly happened. Well researched.

Great Photo Essay
As somewhat of a history buff, this book fascinated me.The photos are simply astounding and easy to get lost in.If you're interested in the real story of the quake, check out the DVD documentary "Disaster by the Bay", also available here.I've seen all the documentaries on this subject and "Disaster" is the best by far.

The most complete book on the "Great Fire & Earthquake"
This book is the must have for anyone interested in this history of San Francisco. As a fifth generation native of the "City" who had reilitives who lived through this natural disaster, I can wholeheartedly say that this is the the quinticental book on the subject. It is filled with never before published pictures of both the distruction and the notiable public figures of the day. and dose a very good job of correcting some of the misinformation attributed to the original official record of the earthquake and fire. Simple a great book.

An exquisite photographic history of 1906 San Francisco
I got this book because it was so highly recommended, after I had finished reading the fiction, 1906. That book gave a lot of information that was new to me, even though I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and my father worked in SF. This book is simply incredible. The amount of photographs of all kinds, including panoramic scenes meant for stereotopic viewers that were popular at that time, and postcards that were 'colored' made this book an incredible find. Not only have I been through it several times, but also I brought it back to my father and mother who were in awe of the detail and the photography provided by the author of this book. Her information concerning individuals, concerning the inability of the fire companies to successfully fight any of the fires (water pipes were broken as were roads made inaccessible)...intrigued me and my father who was a civil engineer.

Then my nephew who is studying at a nearby college came and went through the book, as he is studying urban planning. He was very interested in the modern day SF and the author's explanations of why SF is in an even more precarious position should another quake as strong as the 1906 quake happen, due to continued ignoring of the need for quake proof buildings and water lines, breaks between houses, the fact that SF actually has less fire departments now then in 1906 and other major problems.

I love San Francisco as a city and where I grew up, but quite frankly, I would never dream of moving back there, partly because of this book. Yet there are other cities equally at risk over poor urban planning (new Orleans for one), and this book would be a good required reading for those going into urban planning and environmental impact on human populations.

Excellent book
Because work often brings me to Lisbon,I thought it would be good to learn a bit more about the towns history and this book was a thrill - informative,interesting and easy to read without too many technical details,it gives clear picture of Lisbon the way it was before that fateful day in 1755. when earthquake,tsunamis and fire literally destroyed the town and how it was subsequently rebuilt again with heroic efforts by certain Mr.Carvalho who was given full freedom by king of Portugal,way too scared to act himself.
Sure,along the way Carvalho made many enemies and stepped on people's feet too often but you have to consider immense opposition from the church and aristocracy who opposed anything new,while he had to rebuilt city from the rumble of stones and along the way managed to get rid of Jesuits who brainwashed citizens into thinking that this was God's punishment and there is no sense in building anything new. Eventually King died and his successor was religious fanatic who punished Carvahlo and restored church but although Carvahlo died in exile,his work is remembered and when we walk through marble streets of Lisbon centre,we appreciate this - there simply wouldn't be any Lisbon the way it is today if not for him.
Nicholas Shrady writes very well and connects our reactions to natural catastrophes than and now - he also points that way back than as well as today,God's punishment is still used as explanation to these catastrophes. Listening to words of Archbishop of New Orleans ("We have reached a depth of immorality that we have never reached before") after recent devastations of hurricanes in that area,you would think we are still in old Lisbon and Jesuits are preaching their thundering sermons.
Somewhere in there there is also a short and interesting history of Lisbon itself,which gives you very good picture of the place it was before the disaster,how it depended on colonies in Brazil (and why this wealth never actually helped the country but was spent elsewhere) and what happened since.
The book starts at ends with same day,November 01, (the day of earthquake) clearly making a point in comparing the town than and now.

Slightly pedantic, but still a good read
If you are looking for the kind of 'you are there' description of the earthquake and the fire and tsunamis that followed, you will not really find that here.

However, this still is a very readable and interesting book, linking the Lisbon earthquake to a host of interrelated topics including: how this disaster was truly the first national disaster with an international charitable relief response, how awareness of this disaster challenged current religious and philosophical views (and led Voltaire to write his greatest work criticizing then popular "Optimism") and how the history of the Iberian lands led to the politics surrounding the rebuilding of Lisbon. The backdrop of Portugese history alone is worth the read.

A Disaster Like No Other
The earthquake that hit Lisbon on 1 November 1755 shook up a lot more than its buildings and citizens.There were repercussions for science, religion, philosophy, politics, and literature.In _The Last Day: Wrath, Ruin, and Reason in the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755_ (Viking) Nicholas Shrady gives a compelling short account of the disaster itself, and the history of the events leading up to it, but spends far more of the pages in a fascinating description of the effects of the quake in local and global history.There have been bigger disasters, even in our own times, but this one was not only big, but it made gigantic differences even in the way humans looked at their place in the world.Shrady says that because of this particular disaster in a particular place, all people all over the world "from staunch clerics to enlightened philosophers were compelled to re-examine their most cherished dogmas."We are still living with some of the changes the earthquake wrought.

José I may have been king, but Portugal was largely ruled by the church which was the largest landowner and which supported the justly-feared Holy Office of the Inquisition.Every traveler noted how pious the inhabitants were, but many of them were in church when the disaster began, first with tremors, then violent waves from the sea, then from fire from all the household fireplaces that were beneath the collapsed buildings.Ten percent of the populace was wiped out.As in all disasters or diseases, there were those who knew that God was sending a message to those afflicted.The message, however, did not make sense.Lisbon was no worse than any large city, and demonstrably more pious than the others.The flawed hero of this book, the Portuguese Secretary of State, Sebastião Carvalho, realized that blaming people's sinfulness for the disaster would only undercut his efforts to bring them together to surmount it.The changes in thinking were not just religious, but more broadly philosophical.The most famous changes came in Voltaire's reaction to the ideas of Leibnitz, who reasoned that if the world was the product of a benevolent and all-powerful God, then it must be the best of all possible worlds, no matter how hard it is for us to see the goodness.In 1759, Voltaire published _Candide_, a rollicking, bawdy, fast-moving tale of inexplicable ups-and-downs, including the main characters' presence in the Lisbon earthquake.The book made fun not only of Leibnitz's philosophy, but of the Church, the Inquisition, the nobility, the military, and more.It isn't surprising that governments tried to suppress it, and also not surprising that it became a bestseller.There was no sense in trying to figure out how the world is the best possible one, the book shows; we must simply get on with the duties of our lives.It was a stylistic death-blow to deistic optimism.

Geology vs. Archaeology
Professor Nur asks us to consider the geologic evidence that conflicts at times with traditional archaeology.His arguments are persuasive and in my opinion should end up changing history.This is not the first time that two fields have been in conflict over history.Genetics has already left its mark.Similarly, archaeologists have been reluctant to accept evidence that catastrophic events, beyond the control of man, have been instrumental in changing cultures, society and empires.This book is fascinating and has the scientific evidence that supports views contrary to much tradition.

Readable and well reasoned for the non-professional
As someone who is interested in archaeology, geology and anthropology, but not a "professional", I found this book straightforward and interesting. It explained the reluctance of archaeologists to designate earthquakes as the cause for a catastrophic failure of a city or society, and related other information that I did not know. I especially enjoyed how the author (a geologist) brought an outsiders' perspective into this specialized field. Truly an interdisciplinary effort that sheds light from one scientific discipline onto another.

Earthquakes and History
The author's thesis is infrequent, very large earthquakes have had large influences on the course of history, especially in the Mid East and Eastern Medeterranean.He backs this with extensive evidence from sites as well as historical accounts.A well written, easy read; not too technical.It is a thought provoking book. How do we prepare for rare catastrophic events that occur only once every five or ten lifetimes?See also "The Black Swan" by Nassim Nicholas Taleb for a more philosophical discussion of the same general topic though Taleb approaches the subject from the financial world.

Much needed book in dialogue between archaeologiy and geology
Nur's book opens a much-needed dialogue between geology and archaeology regarding earthquakes.The book's value lies not only in its clarity and the logic of his suggested explanations but in the multiplicity of archaeological sites he presents where earthquakes and seismic activity are already long-established phenomena. Speculative or not, it is time to take his idea seriously that warfare is not necessarily the primary cause of destruction in ancient monuments and cities.Some of the most compelling research in the book is explained via copious use of photos with parallel fallen columns, crushed stacked artifacts and toppled wall course units - exactly as an earthquake positions architectural elements parallel to the direction of a seismic event - and excellent charts where Nur correlates proven high density and high intensity seismic activity with destroyed historic sites, e.g. Selinunte, Susita, Masada, Megiddo, Thebes (Greece), Qumran, Alexandria, Teotihuacán, etc., in historically active fault and rift zones. While not everyone will agree, the door Nur has opened cannot now be so easily shut. Whether or not his thesis is ultimately provable given the antiquity of so many possible events is not even the point of his somewhat controversial book, but Nur is right that archaeologists too frequently do not understand or too quickly dismiss the role of geophysics in history, and his sensible call to reexamine the physical evidence is timely. As a geoarchaeologist who has visited many of the historic sites Nur analyzes and also with training at the intersection of geology and archaeology, I highly recommend this book.

Shallower than the quakes described
This book is, I regret to say, a shallow look at earthquakes. It presents and represents numerous times, the authors contention, probably valid, that archeologists don't give earthquakes enough credit for their negative effect on the ongoing civilizations affected. He also emphasizes that earthquakes can happen anywhere. But the descriptions become repetitive and to anyone already knowledgable about them, doesn't add significant new information.

Simply put, I was quickly bored by this tome. I didn't learn anything new except that archeologists don't give earthquakes enough credit for their total effects. And that wasn't worth the time to read these pages.

Earthquake Country Preparations
I was in the process of finishing my own book on the greatest earthquake in history - Valdivia, Chile - May 1960.I wanted to wrap up the discussion with some comments about the importance of earthquake engineering, structures and "anti-seismic" construction.This book is just what I needed.Thorough, without becoming overly tedious, it gives a fairly complete overview of the various facets of earthquakes and how man-made structures react to seismic waves.

The book focuses on Southern California, but includes bits of information and history of other areas of the world.Black and white photos are not dressy, but serve quite well in illustrating the author's concepts.

An outstanding survey
Any individual or business residing anywhere in earthquake country, whether it be within California, on the Pacific Rim or elsewhere, needs Peace of Mind in Earthquake Country. Now in its third updated, expanded edition, this packs in details on earthquake risks, offering keys to making good preparations and decisions about managing earthquake risks. Graphs, recent photos, maps, and discussions of the latest insurance changes affecting earthquake country residents makes for an outstanding survey.

The universal primer on preparing for earthquakes
I've relied on the second edition for teaching about earthquake-safe and -unsafe construction for years.This new third edition brings the book up to date, and makes it available to order again.

If one lives in California, and only wants to read 10 pages, SCEC's online "Putting Down Roots" serves.If one wants 200 clearly written and well illustrated pages, Peace of Mind is the book.Although the printing is black and white, the presentation is engaging and very accessible.

The book has a sensible organization - discussing first about earthquakes, then problems with buildings, ways to build correctly for earthquakes, and finally insurance and how to prepare.There is an extensive index, appendices to show national and global hazards, and useful regional web links.

For those more curious about earthquakes than engineering, I'd recommend

I highly recommend this book, and especially the latest edition, and plan to use it this winter in my course.

It's about time
This is an excellent book for home and business owners everywhere trying to understand the earthquake risks to their homes and businesses. It provides very clear explanations of the forces behind earthquakes, safety risks, property risks, and business risks and it explains what you can do to reduce your risks by fixing your home or buying insurance, if you even need to. The best part is that you don't need to be a scientist or an engineer to understand it. I found the official website at [...] and there was a lot of additional information there. Earthquakes are too often addressed after they happen, this book allows you to be prepared before the next one.

Factual and entertaining look at disaster
This book is a gem! Having a longtime interest in the SF Quake, I look forward with great interest to new books, and recently there have been a few. This one is unique in that it offers a well written text with rare glimpses of the event through steroscopic scenes. Mr. Burkhart must have spent numerous hours hunting for these never before seen photos that capture that tragic day so perfectly. Thoroughly researched and beautifully presented, I would receommend this book to seasoned historians as well as casual readers.

Entertaining and Informative!!
This is one of the best books I've seen about the 1906 Earthquake.As a 5th generation Californian, I am impressed not only by the multitude of 3-D images of the quake, but also by the fascinating historical accounts that this book contains.Whether you are intereted in the quake itself, the fire or the stories that go with the 1906 Earthquake, this book has something for you.My 87 year old mother loves it, as does my 5 year old grandaughter.I highly reccomend this book!!!!!

Well conceived, well executed
This is not the book to pick up if you're interested in the 1906 earthquake.Although informative, that is not what this book is trying to achieve.The book is much more a history book about the way photographers using 3-D technology recorded the aftermath.As such, it provides us with amazing photography, and very good quality enlargements of the original photos, so that we may compare "flat" 2-D to the 3-D. ... Great book!
This is a great book.
It is true that some of the material could be updated - the book was published in 1996! Nonetheless, the basic principles of geotechnical earthquake engineering are there. Kramer's writing style makes difficult concepts accessible. The graphics and figures are nice and clear and support the text very well. A classic for anyone in the field.

The best introduction to geotechnical earthquake engineering
Yes, this is an excellent overall introduction to the geotechnical aspects of earthquake engineering.We use it regularly in practice.The sections on seismic hazard analysis and seismic slope stability are particularly strong.

Topics in geotechnical earthquake engineering is one of the
most active fields and always in rapid changing. Only with
several years off, the book by Professor Kramer is going to
be out-of-dated. Yet it is the BEST book available so far on
this topic.
I found the information in this book is useful for learning and
understanding, yet for the most excellent descriptions, we
have to refer directly to the scattered publications of
Berkeley School (i.e. Prof. H.Seed, R. Seed and J. Bray et al).

More like an ADVANCED intro!
The book may say Introduction, but don't expect a "Seismology for Dummies" type set up. This book is actually quite advanced and detailed, jumping right into intricate math formulas. This is a great book for those already familiar with the basic concepts of seimsology, however those with limited math skills or no prior knowledge of seimsology will be turned away by the technicality of some aspects in the book.

Great Introduction
This book covers the essentials and then some.It goes beyond what can reasonably be covered in an introductory course.There is a good deal of derivations and presentations from several viewpoints.Covers seismology, interpreting seismograms, inverse theory, basic equations, earthquakes, earth structure.Loads of pictures, mathematics, and real-life discussions.Puts everything in a cohesive package.Expect a challenging read!

Good intro textbook to seismology
I have used this textbook for an intro to seismology class in college and have found it to be very detailed and covered a wider range of topics compared to other seismology textbooks. This book focus a great deal on deriving equations, so if you are a math person, it'll be a great way for you to learn. Problem sets at the end of each chapter are challenging but not totally impossible; and like most textbooks, only some of the answers are on the back. There are a few mistakes I found in the diagrams, but not it's not a big deal. Overall, I do recommend this book as an intro text book geared towards the upper level undergraduates or graduate students.

Excellent text for undergrad/grad course.
I used this book in a course on earthquake kinematics.Previously I had used the Aki/Richards book 'Quantitative Seismology' and found myself rethinking my major!Fortunately I slugged through it and my fascination with seismology was rekindled by this book.It explains a lot of the concepts well enough for those with only a few semesters of calc/physics under their belts to easily understand.I was even able to use this book as a more clear reference for an Inverse Theory course I took.The examples are great, the diagrams clear and concise and the tone is relaxed.This book actually explains concepts that are not explained in the Aki/Richards book.I particularly like the section on Green's functions, waveform inversion, and moment tensors.There is even a chapter on Fourier analysis!This is a book I can go back to for clear & concise explanations of otherwise abstract subjects.My copy is heavily tabbed since I use it often.My only gripe is the size of the font and the layout.There are two columns per page so it makes for some tiny print and everything seems squeezed together and slightly busy.The authors do provide a nice web-site where you can look at all the diagrams in the book as huge images....free!The link can be found on Dr. Wysession's homepage at Washington University St. Louis.
All in all a great book on a great subject!

Fun with FORTRAN
This book is not an opportunity to use the earth to explain continuous media.Continuum mechanics explains much of the behavior that is observed on the earth.S&W is hardcore geophysics - not for the faint-hearted!The book does still use FORTRAN - can we please move on?But the derivation of the wave equation in the second chapter is a key for any PhD wanna-be to learn for their comps. ... On Shaky Ground: to the point
I have been trying to find infnormation on the New Madrid Quakes for some time and this particular book while not lengthy, was sufficiently detailed to provide information I was not already familiar with. At the same time, and of course due to the dates during which the quakes occurred, there was, and is, limited factual evidence to rely on.

On Shaky Ground-A review
This book is well-written and organized.It was a very enjoyable read.The author researched the subject well and the reader can get a feel of what it must have been like to suffer in this enormous earthquake. This book is a history of the largest earthquake in the history of the U.S. The local residents gave the New Madrid Historical Society descriptions of what they experienced.

I understand because my great-great grandparents were living near the fault in Tennessee and experienced the horrors of this disaster.
Their stories have been handed down for generations.My grandmother told me our families' stories about this horrific experience.
When this fault becomes active again the cities of Memphis all the way to St. Louis will be in terrible danger.
