Product Description
Rainforests represent one of Earth's most precious natural resources. With swaths of forested land spanning the globe, rainforests house over half of the known species in the world. Along with this biodiversity, they also provide homes for certain human peoples, are critical to maintaining the oxygen-carbon dioxide balance in the atmosphere, and are an important source of food and medical supplies. However, rainforests face the threat of extinction because of logging and the encroachment of urban societies. Every day sees more and more acres of these needed and beautiful areas disappear forever, vanishing faster than nature can replace them. This book provides a useful review of rainforests: describing exactly what they are, the source of their importance, and the dangers they face. Following this overview are carefully selected abstracts of current literature that provide in-depth studies and discussions of the rainforests, with easy access provided by author, title, and subject indexes. ... Description:
This study was done in San Salvador and El Bondho, Mezquital valley, Hidalgo State, Mexico, with the aim of comparing the Collembola community from two plots with the same edaphic classification: San Salvador is irrigated with waste water (residual water) from Mexico City, and El Bondho, is watered from a well (sweet water). A total of 5967 Collembola from 31 species were obtained of which 19 are new records for Hidalgo State; 4833 specimens were from San Salvador and 1134 from El Bondho. Their species richness was 29 and 19, respectively. Dominant species both in abundance and frequency were Proisotoma minuta, Cryptopygus thermophilus, Xenylla grisea and Hypogastrura essa at San Salvador. Diversity and evenness were higher there than in El Bondho; in addition the species richness was lower than at San Salvador; mainly due to the dominant species. Similarity coefficient shows a disturbance in the composition of the Collembola communities, with only 70% of similarity among both plots. The irrigation type affects the density of some species like X. grisea, Folsomides parvulus, Cryptopygus ca. benhami, Pseudosinella octopunctata and C. thermophilus and composition in both plots while Lepidocyrtus violaceus, Pseudosinella violenta and Sphaeridia serrata are affected by irrigation kind and sampling date. Soil properties, such pH, EC, OM and exchangeable contents of cations (Mg^2^+, Na^+) appear to affect the composition and abundance of the Collembola communities. ... Read more

Description:
Northeast China maintains large areas of primary forest resource and has been experiencing the largest increase in temperature over the past several decades in the country. Therefore, studying its forest biomass carbon (C) stock and the change is important to the sustainable use of forest resources and understanding of the forest C budget in China. In this study, we use forest inventory datasets for three inventory periods of 1984-1988, 1989-1993 and 1994-1998 and NOAA/AVHRR Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data from 1982 to 1999, to estimate forest biomass C stock and its changes in this region over the last two decades. The averaged forest biomass C stock and C density were estimated as 2.10PgC (1Pg=10^1^5g) and 44.65MgCha^-^1 over the study period. The forest biomass C stock has increased by 7% with an annual rate of 0.0082PgC. The largest increase in the C density occurred in two humid mountain areas, Changbai Mountains and northern Xiaoxing'anling Mountains. Climate warming is probably the key driving force for this increase, while anthropogenic activities such as afforestation and deforestation may contribute to variations in the C stocks. ... From the author: Late summer counts of juveniles at sea are used as an index of Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) reproductive success, but little is known about juvenile dispersal or habitat use. Further, it is not known whether these counts accurately reflect absolute breeding success. To address these questions we conducted five boat surveys for Marbled Murrelets and Pigeon Guillemots (Cepphus columba) in Kachemak Bay, Alaska between 7-24 August 1996. Juvenile murrelet distribution in the bay was patchy, and we identified a juvenile Marbled Murrelet 'nursery' area in the outer bay. Fifty-three of 61 juvenile murrelets were in this area, whereas afterhatch-year (AHY) murrelets were dispersed throughout the bay, as were juvenile and AHY Pigeon Guillemots. The murrelet nursery was characterized by water inside of or at the edge of a 20 m deep contour, semi-protected seas, productive waters, and a large bed of Nereocystis kelp. Juveniles comprised 16.1% of all murrelets and 24.8% of all guillemots observed at sea. These data suggest a maximum reproductive success of 0.32 chicks/pair if all AHY murrelets were breeding and 0.46 chicks/pair if only 70% of AHY murrelets were breeding. For guillemots, maximum productivity estimated from at-sea counts was 0.50 chicks/pair if all AHY were breeding and 0.71 chicks/pair if only 70% were breeding. The guillemot estimate was similar to that obtained by concurrent studies at nine guillemot colonies in the bay (0.56 chicks/pair). These results suggest that at sea surveys in late summer provide a reasonable index of local productivity for nearshore alcids. Further, if murrelet nursery areas can be found, at sea counts may provide a valid measure of absolute productivity.

Description:
In 25 permanent sample plots in Cupressus lusitanica plantations of the Munesa Shashemene Wood Industry Enterprise, in the Oromia Federal Regional State, Ethiopia, the dominant height growth was observed and site index functions fitted. The plots had been continuously observed from ages 7 (10) to 21 (18) in the Gambo-Shashemene and the Munesa growth districts, respectively. Measurements in each plot were taken 5-8 times, altogether a total of 163 observations were available. Parameterising the general Chapman-Richards function, showed that (i) no point of inflection within the range of the data was found, (ii) the growth rate parameter, k, of the model did not depend on site index, and (iii) the growth rate parameter, k, and thus the shape of the height growth curves differed significantly between the Gambo-Shashemene and Munesa growth districts. Previous site index curves for the same region fitted well for the Gambo-Shashemene district but not so for Munesa. Therefore, it is concluded that when developing and using site index functions, growth districts as a possible reason for different shapes have to be taken into account. ... Read more

Description:
Stand density index (SDI), although developed for use in even-aged monocultures, has been used for assessing stand density in large-scale forest inventories containing diverse tree species and size distributions. To improve application of SDI in uneven-aged, mixed species stands present in large-scale forest inventories, trends in maximum SDI across diameter classes and species combinations were observed for eight common tree species of the United States. Additionally, the relationship between a stand's mean specific gravity of component trees and maximum SDI was explored. Results indicate that the maximum SDI that any particular species may attain is affected to varying degrees by the species composition of subject stands. A strong relationship was found between the mean specific gravity of all trees in a stand and the 99th percentile of the observed distribution of stand SDI's by classes of mean stand specific gravity. A model is proposed whereby the mean specific gravity of individual trees in a stand may serve as a predictor of a stand's maximum stocking potential, regardless of the stand's diameter distribution and species composition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for students.
As a Library Assistant studying for my Library Technician degree this set of books became my best friend. While most colleges or universities will have copies for loan, I found that I oftened added things to the book, thus the importance of having your own copy.

The first volume covers the rules for using and assigning DDC numbers.

The second and third volumes contain the schedules / summaries for actually assigning the DDC number.

The fourth contains the Relative Index (a Library Tech's best friend), which assists in locating appropriate numbers.

I know its a lot of money, but it is well worth it if you are serious about working in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars the book is very useful for classification.that's why its us

Product Description
Rainforests-home to more than half of all plant and animal species on earth while covering less than six percent of the world's land area-have intricate ecosystems with multitudes of animal and plant species, including humans. Yet deforestation of the rainforests has greatly increased in the past half century. Ten thousand years ago rainforests covered an estimated 9.5 million square miles, but as millions of trees are lost daily to agricultural and commercial development, scientific studies project the reduction of rainforests to six million square miles by the year 2000 and 3.5 million square miles by 2050.

Numerous scientific, political, conservationist, public-information and other organizations have been formed to address every aspect of rainforests; over 120 worldwide can be found in this directory. Each entry lists the address, phone number, contact person, e-mail or Internet address, (if available), mission statement or goals, publications, and often the group's history and current projects. All listed agencies and organizations readily accept queries for information about rainforests, and most invite participation in their activities and projects. ... Read more

Product Description
Charles H. Smith has endeavored in this bibliographic review to include literature bearing on both the biological study of diversity itself, and the socio-natural science of diversity conservation. Two bibliographies are included in this work. Bibliography I lists the approximately 1200 monographs and 4500 shorter articles featured here, whereas Bibliography II provides a selective accounting of "special issues" of serial publications whose main theme is biodiversity studies-related. Entries are enhanced, as applicable, with bibliometric ratings, key words, and brief annotations. Coverage centers on the period 1986 to 1998, but extends to many works published prior to that date that remain relevant to trends occurring during it. There are three indexes, covering general, geographical, and organismal subjects, respectively, and generating in sum over 20,000 referrals to the items in the bibliography. The work also surveys closely related topics from such allied fields as environmental ethics, nature philosophy, environmental law, agricultural ecology, evolutionary biology, biometrics, sustainable development, environmental policy, forestry, genetics, education, climatology, and paleobiology. While "Biodiversity Studies: A Bibliographic Review", is highly recommended for scientists, educators and professionals-to-be, it cites a fair amount of material that can be understood by undergraduates or even high school students. ... Description:
The gonad morphology of the sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotus, collected during the months of May to November 1996 in Morrocoy Bay on the northwestern Venezuelan coast, was analyzed. The gonadal cycle was characterized by five stages of development: post-spawning, recovery, growth, advanced growth and maturity. Maturation did not proceed at the same pace in all gonad tubules of any one animal. Due to this asynchronous gonad development an Individual Weighted Maturity Index (IWMI) was devised to determine reproductive state. It was calculated from the proportion of the different tubule stages observed in each specimen. The maximum value attainable is 5 if all tubules are in the mature stage. Towards the months of July and August, most, but not all, of the ovarian and testicular tubules had reached maturity as indicated by IWMI values of 4.32 and 4, respectively. IWMI represents a quantitative estimation of gonad maturation in holothurians exhibiting asynchronous development as it revealed the maturation pattern underlying gonadal chronological development. ... Description:
Seven algebraic difference equations were used to develop site index models for major pine species of the forest region of El Salto, Durango (Mexico). Data from stem analysis of 160 trees of Pinus cooperi, P. durangensis, P. engelmannii, P. leiophylla and P. herrerae were obtained and a data structure involving all possible growth intervals was used to fit the equations. Generalized nonlinear least square methods were used to take into account the error structure. Autocorrelation was corrected expanding the error term to allow a first-order autoregressive model adequate for the data structure. Different weighting factors were employed to satisfy the equal error variance assumption. Bias, root mean square error and Akaike's information criterion were calculated and cross-validation residuals were used to evaluate the performance of the equations. The results indicate that models with multiple asymptotes achieve greater accuracy and precision. The best results were obtained with an algebraic difference equation derived from the base model of Hossfeld IV. Due to these species often constituting mixed stands with the same silvicultural treatments and rotation age, differences among species in the best dominant-height equation were examined and tested using the nonlinear extra sum of squares method. The model parameters were significantly different among species. Based on the analysis, the Cieszewski and Bella polymorphic equation can be recommended for all five pine species. This function is polymorphic and base-age invariant with multiple asymptotes. It provides compatible site index and height growth estimates. ... Read more

Description:
Uncertainties about the implications of land-cover heterogeneity on the Amazonian carbon (C) and water cycles are, in part, related to the lack of information about spatial patterns of key variables that control these fluxes at the regional scale. Leaf area index (LAI) is one of these key variables, regulating a number of ecosystem processes (e.g. evaporation, transpiration and photosynthesis). In order to generate a sampling strategy for LAI across a section of Amazonia, we generated a landscape unit (LU) map for the Tapajos region, Eastern Amazonia, as a basis for stratification. We identified seven primary forest classes, stratified according to vegetation and/or terrain characteristics, and one secondary forest class, covering 80% of the region. Primary forest units were the most representative, covering 62% of the total area. The LAI measurements were carried out in 13 selected LUs. In each LU, we marked out three 50mx50m plots giving a total number of 39 plots (9.75ha). A pair of LAI-2000 plant canopy analysers was used to estimate LAI. We recorded a total of 25 LAI measurements within each plot. We used the field data to verify the statistical distribution of LAI samples, analyse the LAI variability within and among sites, and show the influence of sample size on LAI variation and precision. The LAI showed a high coefficient of variation at the plot level (0.25ha), from 5.2% to 23%, but this was reduced at the landscape unit level (three co-located plots, 1.8-12%). The level of precision was <10% and 15% at the plot and landscape unit level, respectively. The LAI decreased from a dense lowland forest site (5.10) to a secondary forest (3.46) and to a pasture site (1.56). We found evidence for differences in the scale of spatial heterogeneity of closed canopy forest versus open canopy forest and palm forests. Landscape variables could, in part, explain differences in LAI among forest sites, and land use is an important modifier of LAI patterns. The stratified LAI sampling proposed in the present study could cope with three important aspects of C and water fluxes modelling: (1) optimise the information obtained from field measurements, which is an advance for models parameterisation, compared to the usual random sampling; (2) generate information for a subsequent scaling up of point field measurements to surfaces covering the whole region; and (3) build a useful basis for validation of estimations, based on remote sensing data, of LAI in the Tapajos region. The variability of LAI in the Tapajos region showed that this variable is a source of uncertainty for large-scale process modelling. ... Read more
