5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Excel and Minitab User
I checked Dr. Dielman's Applied Regression textbook out from Tsing-Hua Univ (Taiwan) Library for preparing my MBA thesis regarding the interaction effects. Given the widespread use of the SPSS or SAS, there are fewer texts writen in other commercially available packages. This book provided an alternative option for conducting the regression work.

Product Description
A mechanism is a mathematical structure that models institutions through which economic activity is guided and coordinated. There are many such institutions; markets are the most familiar ones. Lawmakers, administrators and officers of private companies create institutions in orders to achieve desired goals. They seek to do so in ways that economize on the resources needed to operate the institutions, and that provide incentives that induce the required behaviors. This book presents systematic procedures for designing mechanisms that achieve specified performance, and economize on the resources required to operate the mechanism, i.e., informationally efficient mechanisms. Our systematic design procedures are algorithms for designing informationally efficient mechanisms. Most of the book deals with these procedures of design. When there are finitely many environments to be dealt with, and there is a Nash-implementing mechanism, our algorithms can be used to make that mechanism into an informationally efficient one. Informationally efficient dominant strategy implementation is also studied. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to understand!
This book was used by my class as the main textbook. Very easy to understand and will help you get an A in your class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Follow the math!
This is a very accessible and informative book. I had a couple of courses in calculus back in the early '60's, but I remembered next to nothing.Furthermore, I had absolutely no recollection of partial derivatives or total differentials. For all I know, we never covered them.

Nevertheless, with the help of Dowling's text, a colleague and I were able to use partial derivatives with a large data set to demonstrate that school size and the measured achievement of schools with largely low-income students are inversely related.Furthermore, using total differentials we were able to demonstrate that the measured achievement costs of increasing school size are diminished as districts get smaller, and that the benefits of small schools for less-advantaged students are diminished as districts get larger.

This is the one time in my life that I was able simply "follow the math" to a new and interesting finding, the one that followed from the total differential.Without a text as accessible, usefully organized, and broadly informative as Dowling's, I never would have been able to pull it off.A small achievement, perhaps, but very satisfying.

4-0 out of 5 stars straight to the point
This book goes straight to the point without lengthy explanations, instead you are guided through the concepts through a large number of explanations and exercises.

This makes progress much faster - in other books you have to read through what the author is trying to explain in words, which takes almost as long as doing the actual math....Chiang's 'Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics' is a case in point.
Personally I understand a concept better if I see lots of examples.

This book ignores the talking and focuses on the doing.
If you enjoy learning by looking at examples and don't mind not having everything spelled out to you, i.e. using your intuitive skills, then you will enjoy this book.

This book covers a first-year course in Mathematical Economics and can be used as preparation for Chiang's [...]

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for extra studying
My daughter was taking a course on Finite Mathematics. We used the examples and solutions to help her review for the final exam.It was very helpful in 2 areas: (1) linear programming - graphical approach and (2) Matrix algebra and its use in solving sets of linear equations. In her course and her textbook, they covered financial math (interest, annuities, loans, etc.)This book had nothing so it was a slight disappointment in this area.

Product Description
Designed for instructors who want to stress the understanding of basic concepts and the development of "statistical intuition," this book demonstrates that statistical reasoning is everywhere and that statistical concepts are as important to students' personal lives as they are to their future professional careers. Ramsey aims to develop statistically literacy - from the ability to read and think critically about statistics published in popular media to the ability to analyze and act upon statistics gathered in the business world. The underlying philosophy of this book is that given a reasonable level of depth in the analysis, the student can later acquire a much more extensive, and even more intensive, exposure to statistics on their own or in the context of the work environment. Some use of calculus is included. Use of the computer is integrated throughout. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Researcher and Lecturer in Financial Ecometrics
James Ramsey has written the ideal introductory statistics text for those with inquisitive minds. Ramsey's The Elements of Statistics with Applications to Economics and the Social Sciences presents an insightful, but accessible approach to the processes of statistical reasoning and problem solving. There are plenty of well-developed and realistic case studies that offer the reader straightforward explanations of the statistical reasoning used in setting up the problem solution.Ramsey does not just present statistics as facts and numbers; the why's and how's behind the use of specific statistical tools required in case studies and other examples are addressed in a straight forward and simple to understand manner. This contrasts most contemporary introductory statistics texts where it seems there is always an attempt to be the biggest encyclopedia of statistical examples. Ramsey's style of exposition offers the reader the depth and perspective required to facilitate both the current and future statistical requirements of the reader. In short, this is one of the few introductory texts that allow the reader to attain a stable grounding in the field of statistics on one hand, and on the other, will still be a useful reference throughout one's professional career.I highly recommend Ramsey's text as both a starter text and as a reference for those looking to clarify their fundamental statistical queries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Associate Professor of Economics, East Carolina University
This book is a wonderful introductory statistics text. In contrast to the usual extensive approach in which students are exposed to a large cookbook of statistical procedures that end up being memorized 'for the exam,' this text operates on the intensive margin in a successful effort to provide the conscientious student a far deeper introduction to statistical reasoning and practice.

Each chapter contains a large set of exercises and the text comes with a simplified student version of S-Plus. Most of the computational work required for these exercises can be carried out through a menu-driven GUI interface. To help facilitate learning, many worked examples are also provided.

The mathematical requirements include a little beyond what a student should have upon entry into a first calculus course in an American university, i.e., little beyond basic algebra. An appendix explains all the mathematics used in the text.

I enthusiastically recommend this text!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Elements of Statistics - A Review
The Elements of Statistics: with Applications to Economics and the Social Sciences by James B. Ramsey is an innovative and excellent undergraduate level text on the foundations and reasoning of statistics estimation and inference. This book is written for the curious student who is interested in understanding the basics of statistical analysis, the intuition behind statistical and information processing, and the process of decision making based on some data. Most importantly, in this book Ramsey takes the student through a fascinating voyage of discovery. In this voyage, Ramsey devotes significant effort to explaining what are the fundamental rules underlying most data analyses within the social and natural sciences. This is done without requiring much prior knowledge of calculus and with almost no formal mathematics. Ramsey accomplishes this task by building on a large number of real world examples, some of which he re-evaluates at the end of each chapter. By doing so, he allows the reader (student or researcher) to see the real value of the knowledge just acquired in the most recent chapter. That is, "what can I understand now about that specific problem that I could not understand before." In that way the student is going through an on-going learning process. A process that allows one to understand the data by recognizing what is observed and what is not observed, what is random and what is not random, what process may have generated the data, and what one can infer from the data.
To summarize, once Ramsey expresses his philosophy of approaching statistical analyses, he proceeds to teach statistics in a completely new and innovative way.First, unlike existing undergraduate textbooks, Ramsey teaches the students via a "discovery" approach where each step starts with a new set of questions and the students are guided toward discovering the relevant answer, given the information they have. Second, the text is easy to read and is full with real world examples taken from a large number of disciplines. Finally, the book is equipped with complete software (S-Plus) that provides the necessary tool for the students to practice and understand how to work with real data. This is an ideal undergraduate level textbook. It is a very useful statistical text for the open minded and advanced undergraduate student and provides the teacher with a perfect teaching tool.It is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible and instructive
This is a great book for learning basic statistics and the scientific method without getting too bogged down in higher math. Don't be scared by the cover - much of the book is in prose - and highly readable prose at that. It provides very useful examples for understanding the basics of statistical models and experimental design. Definitely a great way to ease into an intimidating but important subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic learning for statistics
The book is a classic. It is well written and explains basics of statistics very well -The language is very simple and the concepts explained are easy to grasp. I would recommend this book strongly for anyone interested in learning from scratch or as a refresher. You can use this book for self learning too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best examples of any statistics textbook
When I initially looked at this textbook, I was disappointed that it has the least extensive number of statistical tests described. There is only a passing mention of Fisher's exact test, no logistic regression, etc. However the examples are by far the best I've seen in any textbook (even non statistics books) and they are very helpful in understanding statistical pitfalls. They make you think more than most advanced texts. The clarity of writing is superb. Since many statistical problems are due to the setup and reasoning of studies, rather than picking the wrong text, this textbook will go far to enable the reader to more critically understand the methodology of studies. ... In today's world, frequently persons enter the business profession from a background in something other than what in the past might have been considered traditional avenues. Not all business textbooks recognize this (see my review for "Mathematical Applications")!However, this book seems to be an exception.

The material is presented in a logical format; key formulae are highlighted and set off from the rest of the text; and in-depth business examples are given in each chapter, demonstrating the particular statistical tools to be taught.

1-0 out of 5 stars the worst customer service ever

Many disappointments:

-The item arrived damaged, because the vendor used and already used and old damaged postage box , and he tried to glue it and taped it, so he will not by a new box to post my book. Consequence: the book arrived glued on the box, in a very bad condition.

-2nd problem, the book arrived too late unless i paid a fast shipping.I think the vendor took the money for the shipping method and put my book on the regular mail, this is very dishonest. The text book is a very sensitive product, when it arrived after the class had begin, it is very disappointing, specially when the customer had choose a fast shipping method.

- 3rd problem . I contacted the sellerfew minutes after i had place my order, to change my shipping method for an express shipping method, hi have never respond to my email until now. I contacted Amazon Customer service the same day to relate the fact that the seller was not responding to my request, same thing, until now Amazon customer service have never get back to me

In conclusion, I am very disappointed with Amazon.com, I do not think i will shop at Amazon.com again nor reccommend the website to my classmates.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading advertising
I sent for the book and received it shortly. However, it was not advertised as the International version as other sellers did. When I contacted the seller he sent me a snotty response stating it was not misleading advertising as the International Version sticker was on the front of the book.Who zooms in to look at each item written on the cover of the book?He said the International Version is put on the book so Americans will have to spend more money on books. Now I cannot sell the book back as it states it can only be used outside of the US.Who is going to buy it back? Not happy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lack Luster
The thing with this particular book is that it lacks clarity. The problems at the end of the chapter are very clear and really help to solidify the material learned, but the material just isn't presented in a way that is easy to learn.

Every chapter is filled with text, text, and more text. Most of it is erroneous and doesn't need to be there.

Finding equations and definitions are nigh impossible as the chapters don't really follow a congruent path.A concept might be introduced and then five pages later it is finally defined and an equation given. It makes learning this material without outside help rather difficult. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST and the MOST useful textbook I read during my first semester
So far, this is the only book I read every page of during my first semester.

Highly recommended !!! And as said above, having a Professor Thurman as an instructor of the course is a privelege. It really is!

The price is indeed surprising and he mentioned during the class that he agreed writing the book (which is actually the collection of his lecture notes) only if they made sure it was sold at a cheap price.

You'll only enjoy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheer Genius
This book is a must-have for any aspiring MBA student. In fact, it's a must have for any business manager who wants to make real world decisions in the face of uncertainty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a good textbook. Is the price right?
As a student, do you always skip the statistics part when you read a scientific article and only read the end. Well, worry no more. This book really makes you learn.

I have the feeling that this book will be the next best-seller among MBA's after Graham and Dodd's Book on Value Investing.

I still can't believe this book is on the market with this price. It makes me feel I have been robbed when I spent $100 on all other big text books that I barely read a chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Stats Professor
I had the priviledge to study statistics with Professor Paul Thurman at Columbia University.I can honestly say he was one of the best professors I encountered at Columbia. He can teach a blind bat how to work on stata, I know because I was the equivilant of a blind bat in statistics. His course helped me learn how to use statistics in a practical manner-- helping me see the importance of stats in every day life. While not everyone has the luxury of having Professor Thurman as their professor, they can now have the next best thing, this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It had everything in it!
When AP exams finally come along, many students realize (like myself and my friends), that we crammed the material before each class exam but never really committed it to memory. So, to save ourselves from getting lousy scores, we turn to prep books. Barron's has served me well in the past, so my friends and I all bought copies of this before the AP...and it was a lifesaver.

Spending about four hours a day the week before the exam with this book worked wonders! It explained every statistical concept that we'd learned previously in a very clear, cogent manner (in fact, I really felt like I'd learned something after I read this). And, in true Barron's fashion, it left nothing untouched. From regression equations to chi-square tests, this book covers it all. And not only do you get a review of the material, you really get a comprehensive treatment of the material but in a less "frilly" and frivolous manner, so you don't have to wade through hundreds of lines of silly talk as is seen in so many textbooks.

So, after reading this book and doing ALL of the exercises (they're harder than the real thing, so if you practice with these, you'll be set), I was well prepared for the AP statistics exam. When I took it, there wasn't a thing on there that I didn't know how to do, and it's largely thanks to this book!

If you're looking to learn AP stats independently or are looking to brush up on course material before exams, then don't waste your time with any other stats book...read this one, and get that 5!

5-0 out of 5 stars AP Stats Savior
Barron's AP Stats Prep book is what got me my 5. I spent the year in Stats class not paying attention, not doing homework, and for the most part not understanding a single thing about stats. 2 weeks before the exam I went through Barron's front to back, and got a 5! The information is organized in an easy to use fashion, and there's plenty of practice problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book.
This is probably the best AP Statistics book out there. It's very comprehensive and detailed.
If you read and understand most of the material on here, there's almost no reason you will not get a 4 or 5.
The only problem is with the practice tests. Many of the questions in the practice tests involve number crunching rather then testing if you know the concepts of statistics. When i took this test, i was quite surprised to see that almost all the questions were concept questions. I barely touched my calculator on this exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars crammed full of basketball problems
One thing that is seriously annoying about this otherwise solid book is that the author is apparently a major fan of professional basketball, and thinks nothing of interlarding the text with dozens of arcane references to the sport.

Here's an example:

"Consider the historgram of the yearly average assists per game figures for Jeff Hornacek (Phoenix and Houston)."(p. 11)As if it's not enough to mention an obscure player, must we pedantically specify that he played with both Phoenix and Houston?!(This is incorrect anyhow:it should be Phoenix and Philadelphia.)Surely this silliness will help to confuse any foreign or ESL user of this text.

Thus if you're unclear on such basketball abstrusia as rebounds, assists, and three-point shots, this book is likely to strike you as a self-indulgent slog.

On the other hand, if you love basketball as much as Sternstein evidently does, you'll find the text both invigorating and relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for review
this book provides a very comprehensive review of the whole course. i read all of the sections and did all the practice problems at the end of each section. though i didn't have much time working on the 6 practice tests, the information i got from the review part itself helped me greatly on the AP test. i just took it a couple weeks ago and im confident that i got a 5 on it. w0000t ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Awful stats textbook
I hated this book, and I only bought it because it was required for my homework assignments. If you choose not to go to class or need the text for extra help with concepts and equations, well, you're in trouble. There are a lot of Greek symbols and theoretical equations, but few practical examples that would help you learn to solve problems. I had the author for my professor, and his lectures were totally different from how things are presented in the text (and much more informative and useful). If you don't absolutely NEED the book for homework problems, I would recommend not buying it and simply attending lecture.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!
I never got my book. I need it for school and I haven't heard back from the seller yet. It is ridiculous the amount of shipping time needed for this book and the fact that it didn't come on time is even more ridiculous.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Good book from James L. K. Kenkal

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
This has been my worst experience with a company with Amazon.com. This company claimed to be selling me a new book, however, I received a rather old book. The CD that should have been included was not there. When I sent a message to the seller, no one ever got back to me in regard to this matter. I would never do business with this company again. I highly recommend that people find other businesses to do their business with.

3-0 out of 5 stars there are excellent, cheaper alternatives
Take a look at www.coventry-collegiate.com. Understanding Business Statistics, the book featured there, is independently published and sells for only $39.95 (new). It is clear, extremely readable and very student-friendly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Basic Statistics
This is a well written and illustrated text book that describes the working of statistics.Definitions are placed in boxs within the text so the defination of a term is where you read the uses of the term.Review questions are also place within the text so the question follows the definition and explation of the statitistical information being taught. The book also uses web sites for information and examples, software programs such as Excel, to add to the learning experience.Included is a CD with power point lessons, and sample quizes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book but...
Yes, put all the extra features together, namely the student CD and the Visual Statistics together, this seems like a well-put-together solution for a beginner statistics course. However, it needs some help. The book could be more thoroughly indexed. Visual Statistics software does not work properly even with updates. Sentence such as "The mean of the sampling distribution of the sample mean is obtained by summing the various sample means and dividing the sum by the number of samples" is not intuitive. This book has potential to be great, but it will take better teaching techniques than complex statistics talk.

4-0 out of 5 stars introductory stats
The book is essentially a standard introductory probability and statistics course, with an emphasis on the statistics. The business and economics in the title is mostly reflected in the examples given in the text, which have that orientation.

There is also no emphasis on formal proving of various maths results. The typical reader is not expected to be a maths major, and probably does not need it.

A useful feature is the CD that accompanies the book. It lets the reader easily use a computer to handle the tedious data inputting and number crunching. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great textbook.
I am using this in my second year of statistics and I find that it is really well written. It has good examples and the CD and power point slides are really helpful in understanding the concepts. It's one I'll probably keep.

5-0 out of 5 stars business and economics
due to an error with the school, this was the wrong book.I had to return this book and re-rder the correct book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book but with too many mistakes
I have been using a few editions of this book in the last few years and I am going to use it again soon but the 12th edition had too many mistakes. Later I saw the corrections for the mistakes on the book's site but even the corrections had a few mistakes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I used this text in my MBA stats class and have found it to be very informative and useful.I found the examples for Excel and Minitab to be well written and of great use.I would recommend this book for anyone who uses statistics on a frequent basis or simply would like a good reference manual in their library.

1-0 out of 5 stars 12th ed. has problems
The 12th edition of this book contains a surprising number of errors.I am currently using this book for a statistics course in an MBA program. We are twelve chapters into the book now and in most every chapter I have found a mistake; more often than not there are multiple mistakes. What is worse is that the majority of the mistakes are in the practice problems which are where the student learns to apply the skills. This serves to create confusion and frustration on the student's part. Some of the mistakes are sloppy editing while others more significant are providing wrong information. The editors need to take another look at this book and the authors should also take note. ...
