Don't buy this book!!!
This was a textbook in my first ancient near eastern history class in college.All the other textbooks were fine, but this one seems to have been written for an elementary school audience.It's overly simplistic in every conceivable way a history book could be, and furthermore is almost condescending to the reader, with its dumbed-down vocabulary and basic terms in bold print.If you're looking for a good introductory text on this subject, try some of the cambridge ancient history volumes, or The Egyptians by Cyril Aldred and Ancient Iraq by Georges Roux.I wasted my hard-earned money and some valuable time, but now YOU don't have to. ... Ancient Need Not Be Supernatural
This book is a very welcome look at ancient Egypt.Some of what Malkowski investigates is great:he exposes archaeological problems, strange artifacts, new evidence and enigmas, shines the light on weak or contradictory evidence and theories.All well and good and necessary.I love open-minded investigations and science can only benefit from removing blinders and digging deeper.This book is in the inquisitive nature of Von Daniken, to always question and remain open to the new.

However, Malkowski also suffers a bit from the same "wild speculations" disorder that many of the members of "fringe" historians/scientists do.He can't seem to relax into the proposal that, yes, quite probably Egyptian civilization or its precursors are far older and more advanced than we give them credit for being.He almost crosses that Sitchen-line from inquisitiveness into well maybe it was ancient gods or extraterrestrials who did it?Not necessary.He goes up and maybe peeks over, but should stay well on this side of the fence.My fear is that this book is misunderstood and lumped in with the kooky trash rather than being read on its own merits.But basically, Malkowski does a great service and should be commented for it.

Ancient Egypt 39,000 BCE is a fact-filled, fascinating read that raises many important questions.

Interesting Title!!
Malkowski's contention is that the traditional Egyptologists ignore idea that the existence of a much more advanced technology built the monuments and statues of ancient Egypt. He mentions that a kingdom of "gods" built a civilization that ended many years before this building. Hmmm!

Highly Recommended
This is a really great book for children looking to learn more about the culture and lifestyle of the ancient Egyptians. It's not easy to explain difficult cultural traditions to young adults, so this book really impressed me with the way it was easily accessible.

Not Just Pharaohs--but all of Egypt!
This book is another Landmark Books success!

Your children and you will learn, not just about Pharaohs, but about Egyptian history as well.The author utilizes stories well in order to draw the reader in and retain his interest.This is no mere book of facts that you will have to drag your children through; I found myself engaged and learning while reading it.

Of course, this is not the FULL history of Egypt, but all the main Pharaoh's and the events surrounding them are covered in detail.I take issue with a few of the assumptions the author presents that have been made by modern Egyptologists, but the error is in our current thinking on Egypt, not the author's work.

(For example, do you really believe that illiterate peasants worked from sunup to sundown and were pleased to do so for Pharaoh--to a man?Or, that modern scholars who have been able to find little evidence from the time period of Cheops know more about the opinion of the ancient Egyptians towards their Pharaoh than the Egyptians themselves did in 50BC?)

Some Pharaohs covered include Cheops, Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Akhnaton, and Rameses II.Also covered are the times of chaos in between the kingdoms, minor pharaohs and some queens, and times when Egypt was conquered and how this changed their kingdom.Even daily life of ancient Egypt is described within the text, making this an good stand-alone study on Egypt.

Summary: This is an excellent middle-school resource for a study on ancient Egypt that will provide information about most of the main events in a chronological manner. Highly recommended!

Pharaohs!
The mythology of Egypt can be fun, but the history is what really draws your attention. A clear part of Egyptian history is her pharaohs, and this book follows the line of ancient pharaohs with adequately-sized sections for each.
If you are looking for specific details this might not be very helpful, but it is very good for reading about the bigger stories.
This is a great book to help start young readers on their road to learning about Ancient Egypt.
A 'must have' for any Egypt-history-lover!

An Effective Introduction to Ancient Egypt for Children
Written for children who are independent readers, Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt was, nevertheless, a fascinating introduction to Ancient Egypt for all my children. My younger daughter was in first grade at the time and needed some help with the reading, but the stories themselves were of great interest to her. It was fun for me to see all three of them learn about the Rosetta Stone and other archaeological discoveries, most of which I hadn't learned about until I was well past childhood. It's amazing what children will find interesting when it comes wrapped in a story. Although some may regard the story-telling as somewhat fanciful (obviously we don't really know what most of these people really thought or felt), the author has succeeded in her quest to bring the attention of the reader into the context of the history she describes.

We bought this book along with the Greenleaf Guide to Ancient Eqypt, which listed it as one of its primary texts for children's history. I recommend that book, along Tony Allan's Time Traveller Book of Pharaohs and Pyramids, if you are going to teach your children the history of ancient Egypt. The Greenleaf book helps you organize your children's study with questions and projects (along with recommended resources), while the well-illustrated Time Traveller book helps the children visualize what they're reading about. ... A Good 10000 Foot View
In a quest to fill gaps in my historical knowledge I downloaded this book into my Kindle. I am very glad I did.

It is not necessarily surprising what I didn't know; I think in general maturity brings a realization of how vast the world is. It is rather more surprising what I thought that I knew. As a product of the 1980s public school system it is as if I thought the three civilizations somehow existed in a vacuum. That is really what I take away from this book - the interraction of the peoples around the Mediterranean over a span of 1000 years.

When I purchased this book I wanted a concise history that was not too "bogged down" in the details. Of course you get your Alexander, Caesar, Hadrian, etc. But I think Freeman does a nice job of nailing the essentials of the time and then later filling in some of the content before moving on.

Some other things about the book:

- As you would expect the book is about a quarter Egypt, a quarter Greece, and the rest is Rome.

- Freeman has his theories about why each empire 'failed' but does not present it as absolute fact.

- I think Christianity was covered fairly and historically.

- You really get a sense of how ineffective the Roman Senate was. I would be interested to read other books on the subject regarding this. Charles Freeman really makes it seem that the Senate loss most of its power early in the empire and really only existed as "window dressing" at the end.

- Freeman does a good job explaining 'continuity' of the populace even after the fall of the empires. I have always wondered about this and he is one of the first I have read to really explain it.

- He likes to explain the philosophers and learned men of the time which I personally found a little boring. But in context it makes sense since their writings are the reason we know anything about these time periods.

This is not what I would consider a light read, there are moments where I really had to force myself through. But considering the amount of time in history covered and the subject matter I really think Charles Freeman did a good job.

Textbook
The book was exactly what I needed, it showed up very quickly and was extremely useful for my class.

Best overview on Western Civilization
Charles Freeman's book Egypt, Greece, and Rome: Civilizations of the Ancient Mediterranean is an outstanding book. It is by no means a book for experts who hope to learn something new. It is, however, a great book for beginning college students to read. Freeman makes these ancient worlds come to life and make sense. I bought a used copy after reading a quarter of the book borrowed from the library. It is now in my reference section for me to continue to refer to in the future. I strongly recommend this enjoyable book to anyone who has an interest in Egypt, Greece and Rome.

Good but lacking coherence
This book covers Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome in three multi-chapter sections and covers the Ancient Near East, the Hellenistic world after Alexander, and Europian "barbarians" in single chapters. The main topics--Egypt, Greece, and Rome--are, I think, treated quite separately, so there is no great advantage besides convenience to grouping them in one book.

I believe that the Ancient Near East--particularly the Persians and Jews--should have been a primary focus, and probably Egypt should not have. The Persian Wars and the rise of Christianity had huge impacts on Rome and Greece, and much of Greek culture was derived from Eastern culture. Ancient Eqypt was a unique and remarkable civilization but it was relatively isolated, and certainly it is possible to understand Greece and Rome without understanding Egypt.

The basic flaw of this book is that the chapters aren't tied together and that it has no overarching vision. For example, a theme like the similarities between the Eastern, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman religions because of assimilation would have been very interesting and enlightening I think, but there is little of it.

The writing is a bit prosaic, though in general this book is written well. You can learn a lot from this book, but it is difficult to remember it all since it is too much a compendium of facts and too little a coherent story.

Superb history
This is a great book to get an integrated view of the ancient world. I looked at many different books before reading this one, having previously devoured a number of more specialized books about the ancient world over the years, but wanting something more in the way of an overall perspective and context. This book is great for that.

I was mainly interested in the sections covering pre-Classical Period Greece, from 1500 down to the Golden Age (about 500 BC), but the other areas of coverage are superb also. Freeman also has an especially nice touch and fluency with the Greek history, and I wasn't surprised to find a separate book on Greek history by him next to this one on the bookshelf. There were also several gaps in my historical knowledge that this book plugged. For example, his section on the Etruscans, which I only had very fragmentary and superficial knowledge of, was also excellent.

The book benefits from much recent scholarship, and the author points out in the introduction that one of the main differences between a modern book on ancient history and older ones is the degree to which ancient civilizations like Greece can be placed much more securely in the context of their times, showing them not as isolated cultural entities, but as arising from the interplay of much more cosmopolitan influences as they interacted with, and were influenced by, their contacts, peaceable or otherwise, with neighboring or competing cultures. This is another one of the great scholarly strengths of the book.

I also found the author's deft touch and writing style a big plus, and although by necessity this is not a short book, it rarely got tedious or boring. That is notable by itself in a work of this size and nature. Disappointed Buyer
I bought this book for my daughter's fourth grade class and was so disappointed to see nudity in a coloring book. It was compeltley unuseable and I threw it away.

Life in Ancient Egypt Coloring Book
My granddaughter especially likes this book, she is fascinated with the lives of Ancient Egyptians and the history of that time.These are easy to scan and then print, thus saving the book for more than one use.Good large pictures, not fussy or hard to determine what the picture or item is.Wonderful for young gifted children.

Quite Nice, I just wish I had known...
I just wish that I had had a heads up on the frolicking topless women. My 7-year old was kind of shocked. So was I!

FIND IT AS MUCH FUN AS THE KIDS DO
Being a large (and very old) kid myself, I probably enjoy this one as much as the kids do, and they, without exception, are delighted with it.This finished product is quite eye catching and the drawings are simply fun to color-in.As an added bonus, quite a lot can be learned about ancient Egypt and it is interesting to discuss the pictures with the children.This, as has been pointed out by other reviewers, is an excellent supplement for the study of these ancient times.The pictures are well executed, simple, but complex enough to be a bit of a challenge.I find this one best to use for those at around the sixth or fifth grade level. This is one book in a series of book covering our ancient past and is certainly a good addition.Recommend this one highly.

Excellent to Color and Read
Kids of all ages should love this book.It is historically accurate, and the pictures are easy to color.Just have a lot of "sand" type colors available.The art work is excellent, and the resulting pictures can look really "spiffy" if you use bright colors.There is a nice spectrum of subjects, dealing with everyday life, to nobles & royalty, famous battles, mummies, and ending with Cleopatra meeting Ceasar.A really neat book for the price. ... Good and simple intro.
This book is a simple introduction for ancient egyptian hsitory.It is well organised and tells you just about everything that you need to wet your apetite of egyptian history.It is very general but well documented.

Very informative; could have been proofread better.
I've enjoyed reading the local university's copy of this book.I did run into a couple of jarring typographical errors that a competent human proofreader/factchecker would have caught.The most disturbing of these was the statement that the headwaters of the Blue Nile are at "Lake Tanganyika, high in the Ethiopian plateau".The headwaters of the Blue Nile are at Lake Tana, high in the Ethiopian plateau.Lake Tanganyika is half a continent to the south.Big difference.

Except for a couple of these weird typos, it's a very good book.

I like Brewer's "Domestic Plants and Animals:The Egyptian Origins" better, though.

Women in Ancient Egypt
Biased that I am, I was dreading reading this book, as I've read too many books of the feminist variety. I was quickly going to have to acknowledge my preconceived bias, though! What a wonderful book! It contains such a wealth of information on ancient Egypt never mind what gender one is out after information on. Naturally, most of the book centres around the higher castes, but that is to be fair only natural considering that the lesser castes seldom left traces of themselves that are open to interpretation after several millenniums have passed.

Perhaps the best way to summarize a book is merely to name the chapters of the book, so here are the respective names of the ten chapters; "Royal women and queenship", "Queens, power and the assumption of kingship", "Marriage", "Fertility, pregnancy and childbirth", "The family and the household", "Women outside the home", "The economic and legal position of women", "Women and temple ritual", "Personal religion and death" and finally "Images of women in literature and art". The book is in addition beautifully illustrated throughout with high-quality b&w photographs and images. The author holds nothing back when describing this ancient society, so be aware that the material can be somewhat shocking in regards to the ancient Egyptian relationships between the genders.

I would go so far as to call this a must-read if you have any interest in the ancient world that came before our degenerate world-wide Weimar Republic (and you should have an interest!). 5 stars and highly recommended for everyone.

Questionable evidence
The author is obviously very learned and has every right to draw conclusions from evidence witnessed first-hand; however, she too often mentions that the evidence is weak or strong without discussing why the evidence seems to suggest (either weakly or strongly) what has been asserted. This simply happens too often and leaves the reader wondering whether or not she has "learned" something that is not exactly true.
Overall, the portraits of the lives and interactions of the historical characters are very compelling and vivid, among them many pharaohs and their various wives and lovers.

useful contribution on women in Ancient Egypt
This book is a detailed account of domestic, economic, social and legal lives of ancient Egyptian women. The author describes queenship, marriage, childbirth, family, religion, and death; she also discusses women inAncient Egyptian literature and art; and she provides excellent informationto back up her study. An excellent bibliography is included, as well asgood black and white illustrations. This is a recommended book for thoseinterested in the lives and roles of women.

Lots of information in a little book
As a first time traveler to Egypt, I found this book to be very helpful.There were not a lot of details, however, you should always do your detailed homework on the places you visit BEFORE you leave the country.

Each night before arriving at the next destination, I would read about the city we would be visiting.It gave very good descriptions on the sites we would be seeing and in general, was a very useful tool.It is small enough that it fits anywhere in your bag. It includes diagrams and history of the tombs and historic sites.Also includes what to wear and what not wear.Word of caution...be very considerate of their customes.You are a guest in a third world country. The author covers other situations too that should be considered when traveling to this exciting land.

For those of you who have not had the experience of traveling to Egypt, I can say it was the trip of a lifetime!We would go back in a heartbeat! When the world situation calms down, go...the people are friendly and we never felt uncomfortable.

Great little book
This is a great little referece book filled with little tidbits of information that other books don't offer. I would reccomend however that you also read other books like The Travelers Key to Ancient Egypt by West for broader detail.
I enjoyed this book so much that I will definately read more books by this author.

Not a practical guide, only a quick reference
It is a good book as it intends to be a quick reference, but not enough to plan a trip by it. I do find the name misleading. Not really what I expected.

Egypt: A Practical Guide
Having just returned from Egypt I found this book rather a blinkered view by a man with several bees in his bonnet. Although the descriptions of the tombs were good the book lacked the breadth and detail required by a first time traveller. It certainly lacked the kind of practical step by step realities needed to actually travel around and see these sites. I found the Rough Guide excellent in comparison.

Solid & comprehensive reference
This set is about as complete as can be found today. Some can and will argue specific gaps, discrepancies and/or minor points - all perhaps legitimately - but to hold as much information as these volumes have right in one place at any time, no other current compendium exists; especially considering these volumes' publication date.

Do Not Read!If actually want a real authoritativeview on Ancienty Egypt!
My main problem is with the man behind the book.The book for all intents and purposes is an "authoritative view" on Ancient Egypt, hahahah.Scholars know that Redford is far from the ideal candidate to construct a Encyclopedia on Ancient Egypt.His methods and views are for the most part outdated.He is a laughing stock in the scholarly community.His digs rarely produce actual "archaeology," if you could even call it that.From someone who has personally worked with Redford (and I have in Mendes and Karnak) I can tell you that no one takes this man seriously, and for the most part people pay homage to him for either grant money or just stupidity.He is a racist and sexist.Do not buy this book if you actually want to learn anything.I would look at Ian Shaw's Encyclopedia, because this is actually what introductory Egyptologists use in school and in the field.The positive reviews are all from graduate students awaiting his death, and hoping to profit from it.Thank you Sean, Rachel, and all the other graduate students who want to help his bad reputation, also merenptah... hahaha.. i know you, and what you have done to preserve the legacy of this moron....
But seriously, Ian Shaw's is much cheaper and actually an "authoritative view."From someone who has worked with both scholars, i will tell you, Redford is laughable.

Best Reference Book on Egypt Available
This is a 3 Volume Encyclopedia and does consist of 1880 pages. It is the most authorative book that the non professional person wanting to learn about Egypt can obtain. Some of the other reviews (1 star) do not make sense to me and they must be talking about some other set of books.

Definitive but poorly presented
This is an A-Z of Egyptology which will act as a definitive reference. Two downsides:
1) There is no narrative introduction to the subject, so this Encyclopedia would complement a 'history', but not replace it
2) The photographs are in black and white and are often bad quality: badly focussed, badly lit.

Not worth [money] much less 10 times that amount
The problem with this encyclopedia is that it is not encyclopedic in nature.Many topics are not covered (for example, you won't find Hatshepsut's mortuary temple in it), and those that are covered are handled in a very simplistic and abbreviated (not concise, just short) way.

What with this picture of black boy
What the aim of putting Nubian or Sudanese (Black) kid in Egyptian book cover, we are the Egyptian not black, please stop sticking us to the blacks, please put some body who looks Egyptian

It is a craft and educational book!
I really liked this book and it provided me with information I hadn't gotten anywhere else.The crafts are a good way for students to be active and learn.Education isn't just book reading.People need to learn to create with their head and their hands.This is a book that blends ancient civilizations with creative activities.Good work!

Make it Work Review
This book was a craft book. It had almost no info. There were about 10 paragraphs of info in the entire book. I felt it was a waist of money because I needed the book for research not Halloween. I will keep the bookbecause it dose have neat crafts. I thought I would use a lot of indexcards(I put the info for research on them)while useing this book but Icouldn't even fill up 2. It is a good craft book but not a goodbook forresearch. I hope this review helped.

Greta price on a textbook that is needed for a college student. Book is in excellent condition!

Good Book For School
I purchased this book as a requirement for an Interior Design History class at Parsons School of Design. The Historian teaching the course highly recommends.

So far I've only had a chance to browse through, but I like that it goes through each era highlighting the significant differences and similarities. It would be helpful if they included more pictures as illustration to match their information so you can get a better idea.

There's more pictures of single furniture pieces than of a whole space- which I don't like.

History of Interior Design and Furniture: From Ancient Egypt to Nineteenth-Century Europe
Excellent volume. Arrived in only three days. Dust jacket slightly torn on one corner but otherwise in perfect shape. Very informational volume for anyone interested in the evolution of this art.

History of Interiors
This book is very helpful for students and professionals seeking to further knowledge on the history of architecture and interior design. Very detailed information.

A definitive must for ID Students studying the History
Well, I youre thinking between this and Piles' History of ID then this is a much better book. Each style is explained with great details, and black and white photos and sketches are really helpful, and in the middle of the book is about a dozen of color photos of interiors.
I used this book a lot for my studies of the history of id.
If you're looking for a book full of photos of interiors and fancy words then just don't bother buying it since you wont find them in this book ... Read more
