From the supplier: Teaching students how to use electronic mail can serve a very useful function in computer-assisted rhetoric and composition classes. The teacher must intially show students how to log in and send basic messages. They must then teach the class the word processing software, and file management and document saving. The instructor must learn to deal with the influx of e-mail through designing a sorting system. Learning how to attach grades to folders and how to make revisions to student work must also be mastered. Although it is time consuming to teach e-mail procedures, and managing hardware space can be tricky, students will find the skills learned of great use. The confidence that students gain will encourage them to investigate computer technology and lead to further high-tech skills.

Product Description
This book describes the emerging practice of e-mail tutoring; one-to-one correspondence between college students and writing tutors conducted over electronic mail. It reviews the history of Composition Studies, paying special attention to those ways in which writing centers and computers and composition have been previously hailed within a narrative of functional literacy and quick-fix solutions. The author suggests a new methodology for tutoring, and a new mandate for the writing center: a strong connection between the rhythms of extended, asynchronous writing and dialogic literacy. The electronic writing center can become a site for informed resistance to functional literacy.

Description:
This article poses a rich, to date unexplored, resource for facilitating students' development of critical technological literacy: the email epistolary novel. With reference to a developmental writing class populated primarily by international English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students, the article describes how the study of an email epistolary helped students to examine technology critically and made students' technological literacies a course emphasis. This approach to writing pedagogy, the article argues, illustrates how ESL students negotiate their technological literacies in the context of their assimilation into American undergraduate communities. The article concludes by suggesting that email epistolaries can guide students at all levels toward more nuanced understandings of how technological literacy emerges in dialogue with other literacy practices. ... Description:
Attention to email exchanged among a small group of student peers supercedes discussion of networked computer labs and is distinguished from research on collaborative classroom work in general, on online peer tutoring in writing centers, on email communication in online professional writing courses, and on online discourse in general. Email peer response within small groups is different from larger-scale, one-to-many computer-based communication tools (CBCT) on class mailing lists, bulletin boards, blogs, and wikis on the one hand and smaller-scale, one-to-one email exchange between an individual student and a peer tutor on the other hand. The benefits of assignments that require small groups to respond electronically and asynchronously to each other's drafts are analyzed and illustrated: rhetorical/thematic, discursive/environmental, technological, logistical/time management. The practicalities of students' exchange of drafts, deadlines, and other guidelines are explained and illustrated in typical student email responses and model instructor handouts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best in Her Field for Over 25 years
Outstanding work is precisely what Lisa A. Smith always delivers. If you're looking for writing tips, she's a professional whose work is top notch. She's direct, has impeccable integrity, and brings her literary gifts to any reader who is fortunate enough to read her work. As an Editor, there's no finer. She is superb, and without realizing it has saved lives from her work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I wanted something that was concise and to the point regarding business email. The information provided was practical and easy to understand. The author provided good information on sentence structure and email etiquette. I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Improving your E Mail
..........................................

Filled with tips for old hands as well as for those who are new

to e-mail, this book is sure to help everyone write better

business messages on the job. Part 1 is specifically about how to

use e-mail at work. Part 2 is a useful guide to the nitty-gritty

of business writing for e-mail and on hard copy - how to get the

words and punctuation right so that you sound and look

professional.

The book is a great resource. I keep it on the shelf above my
computer so I can refer to it often. It's full of helpful
examples that show the wrong way and the right way to use words.
The complete index makes it easy to find things. You won't have
to wonder about whether to use lie or lay, which or that, fewer
or less, I or myself. You won't have to wonder about how to
address a new client or whether to send an urgent message. The
answers are all there in this one handy book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A quick glance at e-mail and clear business writing
This book may be useful for the e-mail newcomers or for native English speakers who are not very skilled in the formal writing.

The book consists of two parts: "How to make e-mail work for you" and "How to write for business". The first part covers basic usage of e-mail, and can be helpful for e-mail newbies. However, if you've sent ten thousand messages so far, it is unlikely that you find anything useful there.

The author has dedicated the second chapter of the book to business writing. It is mostly a set of dos and don'ts, without deeper analysis. I recommend separate, deep books on business writing and correct use of English. The author, has also given a list of references that include "The American Heritage Book of English Usage" by Editors of The American Heritage Dictionaries, "The American heritage Dictionary of the English Language" by Editors of The American Heritage Dictionaries, "Alphabet to Email" by Naomi S. Baron, "Email in the Workplace" by Cristina Cavanagh, "The Chicago Manual of Style" by John Grossman, "Grammar for Grownups" by Val Dumond, "Cliffsquickreview Writing" by Jean Eggenschwiller and "E-What?" by Editors of EEI Press.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly organized, practical, accessible "how-to" guide
Expertly and knowledgeably written by educational film maker and business communications expert Lisa A. Smith, Business E-Mail: How To Make It Professional And Effective is a solid, "user friendly" guide to making the best use and utilization of Internet email for business related purposes. From learning to phrase messages that are alert, easily understandable, direct, useful, and appropriate, to keeping one's messages within company guidelines, Business E-Mail is a superbly organized, practical, accessible "how-to" guide and very highly recommended reading for every business organization from a one-man shop to an international conglomerate with e-mail as an integral part of their daily operations in today's computer age. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Practical and engaging - highly recommended
I actually really like this little book. Not only is it clear, practical and very thorough, but it is also written with humor and personality. It really speaks to the reader in an engaging and personable tone, which made the topic come to life for me. Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Use this to help your people 'get to the point'
Not only useful for writing, this book helps your people communicate better, particularly for:
1) people from other disciplines who need to communicate effectively like finance people
2) people writing in English as a foreign language
3) experienced communicators looking to polish their skills

The author covers strategic writing such as 'audience hot buttons' as well as practical such as weak verbs to avoid like 'go', 'say' and 'do'. You may like her approach to writing creation using 'organic outlining' in part 3 to organize information effectively, where you express ideas as sentences on post-it notes.

This book is my first recommendation for people to communicate better. Because it is the most practical that I've seen comparing to others like "Elements of Style", etc.

I wish I had had this book in grade school !

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Writing With Get to the Point
Get to the Point provides a wonderful, practical, and useful guide to writing. I recommend it highly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother with it
Elizabeth Danziger in her book Get to the Point attempts to offer readers a game plan to reduce stress and anxiety in an effort to write more effective memos, letters, and e-mails. Danziger is the fonder of WorkTalk, an organization dedicated to improving the communication of individuals and organizations, & she has written for popular magazines such as: Readers Digest and Family Circle. In this book, Danziger offers solid advice on how to deal with writer's block, & in some chapters, she gives visual checklists to help guide readers in the writing process.

However, readers will find the book unfocused; for example, in Chapter2 entitled: Planning your Writing, she has too many headings & subheading; one heading is: Analyze your reader before you start, which is about a half a page, then on the next page, she talks about how to connect with your reader using a 3 level formula.Yet, no where in the 3 level formula does she go into any detail, then jumps to a topic called "hot buttons" in which she offers little examples of how to determine the "hot buttons" of the writer's audience.

In addition to the lack of focus, you will find that the book is poorly organized. Some chapters have visual examples, and others do not.Chapter 6, Choose words Wisely, Chapter 7, Help for the Grammar Phobic, & Chapter 8 Mark my Punctuation should have all been combined as they deal with many of the same topics.

All in all, Danziger's book is a good example of a person that might be able to write magazine articles but does not have the ability to write a book. It's ironic that on the back of the book cover it says, "Get to the point! Is the only writing book you'll ever need" and I am saying this is the only book you should run from don't waste your money on this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Thing Since Elements of Style
This book is great! Funny, easy to read, and phenomenally useful. Everyone should own one. ... Read more

Everyone uses e-mail these days, but not everyone knows how to. E-MAIL ETIQUETTE will change all of that. This guide to polite and productive electronic mail use at home or in the office will be a must-read for everyone. Irritated by friends who clog your in-box with too frequent (and too frequently foolish) forwards? Confused about how to send an e-mail to a potential client? Want to dump your latest beau via e-mail? (Don't! Once you send it, you can't control who sees it.) E-MAIL ETIQUETTE has the answers to all of these questions and more. Loaded with tips and advice, E-MAIL ETIQUETTE will help readers navigate the tricky terrain of using e-mail to further their career, social life, and everything in between.Amazon.com Review
The etiquette rulebook was born 4,200 years ago, when Ptah Hotep prescribed proper behavior to ancient Egyptians. Netiquette, however, is a relatively new field. In E-Mail Etiquette, Samantha Miller sheds light on the dos and don'ts of attachments, mass mailings, personal and business e-correspondence, e-mail hoaxes, viruses, spam, and e-mail privacy. "E-mail should be the most polite form of communication ever invented," says Miller, the Internet manners expert for People magazine. Then why is so much of it so irksome? Miller's contributors complain about useless subject heads, unattached attachments, and those chain letters usually sent by one's mother. Miller herself weighs in on SHOUTING, signature lines, and emoticons. On-the-job e-mailers are advised never to write anything in e-mail "you wouldn't want to see tacked to the office refrigerator." Joke senders are counseled to "think of e-mail as a cocktail party.... You don't plant yourself in front of a group of partiers and tell jokes until they flee." Who wouldn't benefit from discussions about why spelling matters and when it's appropriate to e-mail a thank-you note? --Jane Steinberg ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring email, disappointing book
As I said in my review for CREATIVE SCREENWRITING, this book is a one-sided, unfocused conversation that does not live up to its purpose. This is print-on-demand at its worst, a book screaming for the chain saw and vision of an editor. The screenplay itself is not bad for a draft but in no way does this book reveal or clarify the collaborative process in screenwriting. Two thumbs very down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kewl!
After reading the Zoetrope discussion, I decided to give this book a try, and couldn't put it down. Fearless stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery, Fantasy or Dream?
No, it seems to be true love, if their website can be believed. In spite of the distance and cultural differences, these two have written an engrossing screenplay, as well as a spirited account of their partnership(professional and romantic). They've offhandedly revealed some insightsabout the creative process, too. ... Read more

Okay. Here it is. The ultimate How To for anyone who's entering or reentering the job market, starting a small business, or working freelance. Crammed with information, both technical and strategic, about everything listed in the subtitle (and more), this is sure to be the one and only writing book you'll need.

Based on a college course she taught in New York City at the School of Visual Arts, and on years of successful experience in business, Scrivener has penned a handbook that's lively and conversational, and embodies her basic premise: That business writing, too, should have a conversational tone.

Answering tricky questions about grammar and punctuation, about sharpening thoughts to a point, about marketing, strategizing, handling stuff you hate (The 10 Most Horrible Letters You Have to Write), dealing with sticky contracts, and protecting your ideas, this engaging little volume is a reference book classic that readers will find useful throughout their careers.

'A must for job seekers...Practical, comprehensive and great fun to read' Jaime Adams, The Adams Agency.

'Smart, insightful approaches to get results...Should be required reading for anyone who wants to communicate effectively'- Caress Kennedy, President, Career Blazers

'Survival Writing with its do-it-yourself exercises, shows you how to write your own ticket to success. It's a reference book you'll turn to for many years to come. Get it, read it, use it!' - Robert Masello, author of Robert's Rules of Writing.. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two great books in one....
Excellent guide on two different levels!

I was expecting simply a set of outlines for how to write the various forms of letters, articles, etc mentioned on the cover and thought it would be a handy tool to have around. It *is* a handy tool for that and fulfilled my expectations perfectly, BUT...

... it also did more. The entire first half of the book is more of a general guide to the art and mechanics of writing.Yes, as an author myself I was quite familiar with a lot of what Ms. Scrivener discussed, but she carries on that discussion in such a personable (rather than didactic) way that it simply makes for enjoyable reading while also reminding even an experienced writer of some of the finer points of writing rules that have moved to the dust-gathering corners of the brain.

Highly recommended as a gift for anyone graduating either high school or college if they haven't gotten it already! It will reinforce what they've learned - or haven't learned - and may make the crucial difference in how a particular resume, report, or other real-life task succeeds or fails.

Michael J. McFadden
Author of Dissecting Antismokers' Brains

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and Fun
I wish I'd had this book earlier in my career because it taught me what's been wrong with my business writing and how to make it right, or, to use Scrivener's words, how to make it "clear, exact, natural and brief." The trick, she tells us, is to "write it the way you'd say it," not impersonally and stiffly, or "as though business writing is a foreign language in a literal translation."

I also appreciate her business savvy. She really understands the inner workings of business and shows you how to psych out and target your readers, whether with a letter, a resume or a pitch.I even learned a lot from her informative sections on grammar and punctuation. All that and this book is really fun to read.Writers would do well to copy Scrivener's warm and very human tone of voice.
A reader

5-0 out of 5 stars Survival Writing
"Survival Writing" is an excellent reference work.I've used it to kick start new projects.Given the economic times, I've most recently written five resumes.Scrivener's directions are clear, concise and often amusing... hardly a ponderous book.

As a professional writer and editor for more than 40 years, I found her chapter on tone, rhythm and punctuation outstanding.New writers will benefit from her commentary.

This is an author I'd like to know.I rather imagine it would be very entertaining to sit down over a cup of coffee and chat.
