Product Description
Energy Psychology presents a comprehensive approach to healing that combines leading-edge Western bodymind psychological methods with a broad system of ancient, sacred traditions. Incorporating Dr. Mayer's integral approach called Bodymind Healing Psychotherapy, Energy Psychology draws on Chinese medicine approaches, including Qigong and acupressure self-touch; kabalistic processes; methods drawn from ancient traditions of meditation and postural initiation; and psycho-mythological storytelling techniques.

Drawing on thirty years of training in Tai Chi and Qigong, Dr. Michael Mayer shows how integrating the essences of these traditions and methods can restore vitality and give the average person self-healing tools for physical and mental health. Unlike the quick-fix books on energy restoration, this book uses timetested, age-old practices from sacred traditions in combination with well-established clinical approaches. Dr. Mayer teaches readers bodymind healing methods to treat anxiety, chronic pain, addictions, hypertension, insomnia, trauma, and other prevalent conditions. Written in a clear, intelligible style, Energy Psychology includes real-life case studies that highlight the effectiveness of his techniques. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seems Much More Legit Than Any of the Other So-Called Energy Psychology Schools
I have just recieved this book and have read a chapter and skimmed several. So I will edit this when I finish it. But so far this author knows what he is talking about. His version of Energy Psychology seems much more grounded than the other books I look into on the subject. And I'm frankly put off by the other books on Energy Psychology.
I also love his use of the Taoist energy arts, being as I have a history with using qigong with martial arts. I have ventured into the energy practices of yoga, but always seem to feel at home with the Chinese systems.
I'm always looking for future reference material for when I become a therapist, and am always on the look out for quack methods. Dr. Mayer's does not appear to be one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and informative book
Energy Psychology is a must read for anyone interested in a career in psychology, psychotherapy, cognitive science, or in a health-care related field. Although it's like taking a graduate level course in energy medicine and energy psychology in terms of the depth and breadth of the information presented, it's still approachable even if you are not familiar with the field.

In a society whose medical paradigm is disease oriented and whose medical system gets involved once disease happens and then only treats symptoms, Mayer's book presents a timely alternative. He has been a pioneer in promoting the incorporation of energy medicine into psychology and psychotherapy. Mayer is bringing the body and the healing power of the energy of life that has been a fundamental part of virtually every indigenous culture back into a field that has over-emphasized the mind. Mainstream western medical practitioners are just now beginning to catch up. He describes sacred wisdom traditions and profound ancient healing and wellness techniques; discusses what is so effective about them; and describes how he has successfully integrated them into his psychotherapeutic practice. One major by-product of this integration is that he's figured out a natural way to heal psychological conditions with fewer drugs, or no drugs. This fact alone should make the western medical community take notice.

Mayer convincingly challenges the accepted modern origins of psychology. He relates energy metaphors to physiology. These are not new-Age ideas. They are medical fact. The bio-physiology behind energy medicine is well known and documented. He connects psychology to ancient sacred wisdom traditions that were based upon energy healing where the emphasis is restoring equilibrium to the entire system instead of curing disease. Jung provided the basis for this by defining an energy-oriented approach to symbols (he defined archetypes as "energy potential" where symbols can initiate healing energy). Mayer explains how energy psychotherapy works for common physical and mental health conditions including insomnia, addictions, anxiety disorders, through case studies. He also cautions that 'quick fixes' of relaxation modalities may not get to the deeper underlying psychodynamic issues that need to be addressed.

The human body is not a thing or mechanism. It is overlapping fields of energy that constitute our substance and consciousness. Our interaction with that information field is what Mayer is able to tap into and affect through ancient practices married with modern healthcare and Qigong. This is called Integrative Medicine. If the 20th Century was the era of intervention medicine, then the 21st Century is the time of integrative medicine. The western medical profession has not been receptive to holistic healing methods, but that attitude is changing due to the realization that psycho pharmaceuticals are often not effective over time, pharmaceuticals dis-empower people regarding their own self-healing capabilities, andmedication may relieve systems but not address deeper underlying issues. Integrative medicine takes a new look at how to heal. As Mayer explains, it treats the cause of disease and not the symptoms. It looks at the problem energetically, not bio-chemically.

In addition to psychotherapy, Mayer provides a wonderful introduction to a number of topics: Qigong, Tai Chi, Energy Medicine, Integrative Medicine, and ancient healing and wellness traditions. You can read the book to get a fundamental understanding of Qigong and self-healing practices and then you can learn the 20-minute session to actually experience it for yourself. The book can be, Mayer says, "an essential tool to activate [your] inner process of change". This process of change has been referred to as spiritual awareness.

Ultimately, the book's main message is simple: Self-healing methods from a combination of Qigong, Western psychology, and ancient wisdom traditions can treat common ailments, chronic conditions, and transmute long-standing psychological patterns in order to not just live longer, but to live a more vital life. Energy Psychology is a wonderfully detailed book filled with insights borne of decades of working with energy in clinical and teaching settings. It takes some time to digest. I can't say enough good things about it and thoroughly enjoyed it. I use it as a reference guide and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars once in a generation book
A book like this only appears once in a generation.Energy psychology is a self-help book in the highest sense of the term.If you are interested in fundamental healing from a range of physical ailments, perhaps even 'chronic,' or how to approach psychological issues in an effective and lasting manner, Dr. Mayer gives you the keys in this accessible, well-written book based on the most up-to-date research as well as several decades as a practitioner of psychology and the ancient art of qigong.Energy Psychology is a treasure trove for those seeking tounderstand the nature of health and healing as the author clearly explains how the new paradigm of energy medicine, the medicine of the 21st century in the West, meets, like two rivers becoming one, the perennial healing traditions of the East, most notably Taoist Qigong. From this confluence of ancient wisdom traditions and cutting-edge science, a wide range of traditional psychology, energy psychology, Gendlin's focusing, Dr. Mayer has fashioned Bodymind Healing Psychotherapy and Qigong that addresses the healing and transformation of the body, mind, psyche and spirit in a way I believe is unique in its depth and comprehensiveness in all the current literature available on the market today.

If you are a healthcare practitioner, a psychotherapist or simply looking to find a path to health and healing, I believe this book is not only indispensable, it will be a pleasure to read and dip into for as long it is on your bookshelf. If you are simply looking for a twenty-minute Qigong daily routine for balance and vitality or looking to find and anchor your life stance and to activate your primordial self to deal with and transform core life issues, this book it for you.If you are looking for non-invasive, natural healing from issues such as joint problems, fibromyalgia, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome or psychological issues such as depression, poor self esteem, anxiety or panic disorder by activating your own inner healing energy and potential, this book is for you.If you are looking for a holistic, integrative healing method that not only is a rich tool-kit for self care but is simultaneously a path to greater awareness, growth and transformation as a human being, this book is for you.

America's economy and lifestyles have been shaped by the low prices and availability of energy. In the last decade, however, the prices of oil, natural gas, and coal have increased dramatically, leaving consumers and the industrial and service sectors looking for ways to reduce energy use. To achieve greater energy efficiency, we need technology, more informed consumers and producers, and investments in more energy-efficient industrial processes, businesses, residences, and transportation.

As part of the America's Energy Future project, Real Prospects for Energy Efficiency in the United States examines the potential for reducing energy demand through improving efficiency by using existing technologies, technologies developed but not yet utilized widely, and prospective technologies. The book evaluates technologies based on their estimated times to initial commercial deployment, and provides an analysis of costs, barriers, and research needs. This quantitative characterization of technologies will guide policy makers toward planning the future of energy use in America. This book will also have much to offer to industry leaders, investors, environmentalists, and others looking for a practical diagnosis of energy efficiency possibilities.

Product Description
Scientists tell us we need to cut carbon emissions immediately to forestall effects of global warming. Reducing fossil fuel use is the key, and energy experts are hard at work devising solutions. Engineers create remarkable clean energy technologies. Energy policy analysts invent carbon credits and renewable portfolio standards. Fossil energy industrialists promise new, "clean" technology. Renewable energy industrialists compete to develop the magic bullet for transportation fuel or power generation. Every idea is designed to change the nation's energy sector to one that is clean and sustainable for the future.

But what is this energy sector we have and how did it come about? Design professionals, planners, elected officials, and community leaders are under tremendous pressure to find solutions to climate change. They need a broader view of America's relationship with energy to gain perspective on how new ideas might work. Energy in America tells this story, emphasizing that energy use has always been based on cultural factors as well as technology.

Energy in America relates how coal, oil and natural gas built the nation from its beginning and created today's consumer culture. It continues with the rise of the electric utility industry and its influence on American society. Finally, it explores the 1970s, when America woke to conservation and efficiency, and the renewable energy industries were born. It concludes with a look at the future possibilities for community energy planning and current trends in sustainable energy policy. The book features a comprehensive energy timeline from 1775 to the present. Each chapter provides primary web sources, and the book contains a complete index.

Product Description

Energy insecurity is not normally associated with the Middle East. However, away from the oil-rich Persian Gulf, the countries of the eastern Mediterranean are particularly vulnerable. Their fossil fuel endowments are low, while their fractious relationships with each other have long fostered wider political insecurities. Focusing on the Jordan Basin (Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Lebanon and Jordan), this timely volume addresses the prospects for the adoption of renewable energy in the oil-poor Middle East. Featuring regional energy experts, it offers an invaluable survey.

After outlining the regional security context, this book first reviews renewable energy policy and practices in the Jordan Basin. It then considers options for greening energy use, including promising pilot projects in North Africa. The initiatives discussed encompass renewable energy finance, energy-efficient rural communities, and solar and wind energy. There is significant potential for an increase in the uptake of renewable energy technologies in the eastern Mediterranean. This window of opportunity has been created by high oil prices, energy infrastructure investment opportunities, and the UN climate change regime. In conclusion, the book considers the institutional conditions for collaborative decision-making on renewable energy. Such cooperation would deliver substantial security and human development benefits to the region, and indeed the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Reasoned Primer on How to Curb Our Energy Appetite
Tertzakian sensitized us to our enormous energy appetite (western world) in A Thousand Barrels a Second (what a title!). He introduced in that work, the concept of energy break points. Historical periods when mankind has experienced disruptive events forcing a change in how energy is used (burned up all the wood, had to move to coal). Now, in Energy Obesity, he lays out two fundamental energy principles. The First Principle of Energy Consumption simply holds that throughout our history, improved quality of life has been directly related to greater energy consumption. The Assymetry Principle takes what is traditionally considered an energy problem, the efficiency losses from source of production to point of consumption, and stands it on its head. He makes the case that for each barrel of oil equivalent we don't have to consume (by making more intelligent choices about our energy consumption and maximizing technology), we save six or more barrels from having to be produced, with all the environmental savings that go along with that. An incredibly powerful way of looking at the benefits of energy conservation - which many agree is key to a sustainable future (in conjunction with technologial innovation). It is this need for conservation (reduction in wastemaking) that is referred to as the Third Commandment of the Human Revolution in The Vanishing of a Species? - another study of mankind's material demands on planet earth and how to curb them to provide a chance at a sustainable future.

Tertzakian has an interesting writing style, sprinkling personal observations and anecdotes throughout the scientific material used to make his case. An easy read, and one that presents a hopeful view of the future in the face of significant challenges facing us over the next few decades in terms of our energy appetite. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hallelujah!
The most important energy development in tha past five years has been the new technology that provides the economic release of enormous amounts of natural gas - all over the world. Finally, a book has been written that clearly points its importance and the impact it will have on the so many energy sources that are doomed for failure. I hope the politicians will take notice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pick for both college and general lending collections
Peter Tertzakian works with Keith Hollihan in THE END OF ENERGY OBESITY, exploring solutions to the problem of a widening appetite for energy and showing how to change the fuel diet for a better future. His focus on practical options and immediate applications makes for a comprehensive survey key to any serious understanding of energy usage and alternatives: a pick for both college and general lending collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally : a sensible approach
Finally, a book that offers a really sensible approach to dealing with the world's energy problems: stop just focusing on new sources of supply and start looking for ways to decrease demand! Many may react to this book's proposal in the same of knee-jerk manner and suppose that any reduction in energy demand, i.e. consumption, is always going to reverse economic growth. And it's in part because of this attitude that we're forced to dig for oil and gas in the most inhospitable corners of the planet. The belief that we must "supply" ourselves out of our energy problems comes from "The First Principle of Energy Consumption". The book describes this as the rule that if energy consumption goes up so too does GDP and human comfort levels. But the book shows that this rule can be broken. To no surprise, it talks about energy conservation and improving efficiency. But what I didn't expect in the book was talk about the trend toward "virtualization" and how this is the real game changer in the energy sector. Slowly but surely, the way that people live, work and play is changing because of rapidly evolving communication technology. It all started with the telephone and telegraph, but today the platform of our long distance interaction with others is shifting over to Skype, videoconferencing and telepresence- to name a few of these new technologies. Transportation is the big glutton in energy demand and so much of it-from daily commutes to business travel- is being made redundant. The long and short of the book's message is that we can free ourselves from the belief in the connection between prosperity and energy demand growth. We can become economically more productive while burning less and less fuel if we start taking advantage of these communication tools. It's a straightforward and optimistic message.

4-0 out of 5 stars The title got me.
As a Western Canadian living near the Athabasca tar sands I'm very concerned about the impacts of the energy sector (i.e oil industry) activity on the environment. I picked up a copy of The End of Energy Obesity because of the optimistic-sounding title. Canadians, Americans and other developed nations are consuming energy at an unsustainable rate. The developing world is striving to emulate our very energy inefficient lifestyle. I'm skeptical about the author's belief that we can grow our economies indefinitely, while at the same time reducing our "energy appetite", but at least he supports his ideas with plausible arguments. The key appears to lie in changing transportation behavior, which includes the way in which wealthy (i.e. "energy obese") societies rely on huge amounts of fossil fuel for the daily suburban commutes and transglobe business trips of its citizens. The book describes how the information revolution causes the need for much of this transportation to fall to the wayside as new-fangled communication tools make online collaborative work ever easier. The social implications of this Brave New World with its threat of ever-deepening social isolation is a little frightening, but the benefits of"energy fittness" to our global environment outweigh the dangers of one collapsing from an "energy cardiac arrest".Interesting ideas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best EE reference book I ever have
Is good for any EE practicing professional to have one but the book is very pricy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
This book brings any interested person up to speed on the factors relevant to efficiency across a multitude of disciplines. If it is not in this book, it probably doesn't matter. I find this book indispensable as a handy reference. The subjects are distilled to what matters and makes sense. Well done.

1-0 out of 5 stars heavy book, heavy reading
A more than 8 pounds book will not make you an expert in energy efficiency. It is especially true from an Chinese perspective. It is more or less for facility operators, and everyone knows without top management commitment, nothing will happen, regardless of how many measures you know and are applicable for your facility.

You can find all of them in DOE BestPractices, and you won't have to carry this huge manual.

Buy Handbook of Energy Engineering,or Plant Engineer's and Manager's Guide to Energy Conservation, they are better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and interesting - STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
Despite the intimidating name and size of this tome, I found it fascinating to read. It covers everything from light bulb selection to rooftop chiller maintenance. The depth and breath of coverage is amazing.

This is not a hippie guide to backwoods eco-conservation. It is a practical manual, firmly grounded in science and economics that explains different strategies for maximizing comfort while minimizing energy use. In every case, the author examines both the pros and cons of the measure, and calculates the expected payback term. It is so helpful to have a book that is realistic in its treatment of energy conservation. Lots of books outline promising energy saving techniques, none I've read before talk so frankly about the problems you will encounter when you implement them.

Quite technical in many places, the text excels at explaining important concepts that are often ignored in other texts. I have a background in physics, but not until reading this book did I have a good grasp of the operation of absorption coolers or how the spectrum of a light bulb affects the visual comfort of the scene it illuminates. The concise overview of heat transfer mechanisms is more thorough than any thermodynamics textbook I've ever read.

Most important of all is the practical advice that is clearly based on a huge body of real experience. As the book so frequently points out, energy saving measures are useless if they break or are defeated by building occupants. Hundreds of (non-obvious) examples of these failures are given, with pictures.

This book would be great for anyone with responsibility for designing or maintaining buildings of any size. If you are hesitant to pay the high price, find it at a local library. I don't write many Amazon reviews, but after reading this book I felt compelled to strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superlative! A must have!

Product Description
Reflecting its reliance on fossil fuels, the electric power industry produces the majority of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. The need for a revolution in the industry becomes further apparent given that "decarbonization" means an increasing electrification of other sectors of the economy—in particular, through a switch from gasoline to electric vehicles. Of the options for producing electric power without significant greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy is most attractive to policymakers, as it promises increased national self-reliance on energy supplies and the creation of new industries and jobs, without the safety and political concerns of nuclear power or the unproven technology of carbon capture and storage.

Drawing on both economic theory and the experiences of the United States and EU member states, Harnessing Renewable Energy addresses the key questions surrounding renewable energy policies. How appropriate is the focus on renewable power as a primary tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions? If renewable energy is given specific support, what form should that support take? What are the implications for power markets if renewable generation is widely adopted? Thorough and well-evidenced, this book will be of interest to a broad range of policymakers, the electric power industry, and economists who study energy and environmental issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative!
It makes me wonder if the negative reviews shown here are planted by those suppressing free energy technologies!Ms. Manning's book is well researched and has an extensive bibliography of references. It was very informative and well written. It's a shame that publishers like Penguin are actually suppressing her books, as well, by taking them out of print.Must be that the "powers that be" don't want this world-changing information out there??Thanks for your courage, Jeanne, in bringing this important information to light.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
Jean Manning has done a brilliant job in authoring the Coming Energy Revolution. She has bought together the research of scholars and inventors from around the world in this one book. There is so much information in this book that it is a must have as a reference book of any serious researcher.

Owning this book will save countless hours digging for information. With this book you will have a wealth of information at your fingertips!Thank you Jean Manning for writing this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Topic, But No Science to Back It Up
When I found this book, I thought that I had found a scientifically-based book about zero-point energy. Oh how wrong I was. Jeane Manning gives us absolutely no reason to believe that zero-point energy can be tapped, yet assumes it can.

In Chapter Eight, page 97, which is about cold fusion, Manning writes: "Cold-fusion proponents cannot prove that the reaction which follows the absorption is a nuclear reaction. Thus, most conventional scientists reject the whole idea of cold fusion". However, Manning gives no reason for believing that fusion is occuring and continues to simply assume that it is. That is not science, that is faith.

Also, some of the support that zero-point energy exists is an argument that it is heating our planet, like in a microwave, which causes magma and so forth. This is completely false. The interior of the earth is molten because radioactive elements decay inside the earth and heat it up. A two minute search on Wikipedia found me that information, and Manning doesn't mention anything about it.

If you want a real book on zero-point energy, look elsewhere because this is not it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revoking the Implied Consent
Jeane Manning does an excellent job of bringing technically esoteric material to within reach of the average person. That has always been Jeanes genius.... There are serious problems in our energy sector but none of those lie with the inventors.

Since the formation of the monopolies the energy innovation socket interface capabilities have atrophied so as to be non-existent.The energy innovation pipeline has been plugged for some 80 years and courageous journalists like Jeane Manning are doing the dirty job of unplugging it. The public has been duped and consequently affords these special interests an implied consent. Its time to revoke that implied consent and move on to our clean and cheap energy birthright.

The Hilary Burtons would have us believe that the Enrons of the world are doing whats best for us all and the environment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read and Easy to Understand
This is a good starter book to get a general outline of what needs to be done.I only rated it three stars because I've already taken classes that offer a lot more detail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than your average off-grid source book
Lots of good reading with in depth discussion of the authors own hot water and PV systems.I was impressed, the book is somewhat generic and tries to teach simple electrical formulas, boring the crap out of your average reader. The author was a bit too eco-conscious for my taste, but the info was good. Its going on my shelf for future reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative book
I was very impressed with both the information and the easy to read and comprehend presentation. It is very easy to see the time and effort put into this book and the author has a very plain way for presenting the information. This book provides detailed advise on making your home a much more efficient and money saving place to live.It is not specifically geared towards Off-Grid Living and has a wealth of valuable information for any home owner wishing to have a more efficient house. It provides a good look at renewable energy options and is a great source of information.

2-0 out of 5 stars limited information
This is yet another renewable energy book that is far to generalized and does not tell you how to really get off the grid.Lot's of information on how to do it to a tiny cabin, but not a regular house (at least in any specific terms).Pretty well written if you want to familiarize yourself with alternate energy or what's involved in going off the grid, but you sure won't know how to actually do it.Cheaper to read a few articles on-line than to buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A HANDBOOK!!!
This excellent work by the engineer William H. Kemp has made me to decide about installing my own small-wind turbine generator.

In this book you will find the basics about renewable energy, without entering in much technical details, so as a good introductory book it is excellent. Living in a farm with excellent resources all the year round, wind and water, not only I will install a wind generator, but because of this book I have started thinking about inmicro hydro electricity production, chapter 8; chapters 9 to 11, are dedicated with some extend to batteries, converters DC TO AC, and DC regulation or controllers.

Evidently if you want to know a little bit more you have to study more, I would recommend too to the excellent manual by Hugh Piggott, HOW TO BUILD A WIND TURBINE. ... Read more
