Hebe dictionary
I also gave this product as a gift.I've been told that it meets some basic needs for a Hebrew dictionary, but it's not as compehensive as some of Ben Yehudah's old dictionaries were.Still, it serves a good reference source for those who are learning the language.

Old standard, that should be replaced
Ben Yehuda's Dictionary was one of the first I used, and was a good starter for Biblical and Mishnaic/Rabbinic Hebrew - and covers these aspects rather well.

The Reuben Alcalay Complete Dictionary supplanted this one completely however, and you'll see why.30 000 entries is not good enough anymore.Modern Hebrew has many many new words, that are used and it can't be that a dictionary published in the 1960s can match that with out revision.

The dictionary itself is difficult to read, especially the vowel-pointers.If you do want to buy this dictionary it will help but you may wish to try: "The New Dictionary" by Lazar which I found far more useful and up-to-date.

A fair dictionary, but you can do much better
This was the very first Hebrew/English dictionary I ever purchased.I found it in my university's bookstore, and I needed one, so why not?

I can't recommend it to other people, however, for the following reasons:

Cons

1) the type is tiny, faint, and at times unreadeable.The paper it's printed on is cheap, rips far more easily than other books, and has started to "bleed" even though I've only had this book for about two years now.

2) Lack of entries.Simply put, I've looked up words that aren't even listed here.It's not comprehensive enough and doesn't even list things like medical terms, slang, or other modernities.I get the feeling that this dictionary hasn't been updated since Ben Yehuda first put it together decades ago.

3) Lack of explanation with its entries.It can be very confusing when you look up an English word and are greeted with five or six Hebrew words, with no explanation on the usage of any of them.I've been corrected by professors who say I used the wrong word, even though its meaning was similar to what I wanted.

Pros

1) Words use the pointing system, a boon for beginners (a moot matter, in my opinion, as the tiny font may drive beginners crazy anyway)

2) There are grammar explanations in sections at the front and back of the dictionary.They are not, however, very comprehensive, just a decent intro.

All told, I would recommend Oxford's English-Hebrew dictionary instead (in particular, the font in that one is much bigger and explanations are given).I am currently trying to find an excellent bilingual dictionary.

My recommendation for beginners is to get a bilingual one, as a reference book that only goes one way isn't going to help you as much as a bilingual one will.

Major printing problems
This English-Hebrew/Hebrew-English dictionary has over 30,000 entries, but does not cover commonly used idioms.

This version of Ben-Yehuda's dictionary seems to have been printed using technology from the 1940s.

The paper is an acidic newsprint type paper.Just sitting on my shelf, the acid from the paper has burned into the cardstock cover, leaving yellowish brown stains.

The printed ink is not even a true black... but rather a faded dark grey that looks like a photocopy of a photocopy.

Because there are no crisp edges of the printed characters, it is difficult to tell a Hebrew "pe" from a "phe" and distinguishing a "gimel" from a "nun" is almost impossible. The differences in these characters are subtle in the printed form and having obscure/fuzzy printing makes it that much more troublesome to read.

Reading the English text is not problematic, mostly due to the thin, serif font used for the English. The thick calligraphic style of the Hebrew, however, leaves no room for error.

My buying advice is to instead get the "Shimon Zilberman Compact Up-To-Date English-Hebrew/Hebrew-English Dictionary" (ISBN: 9652227781) which is also available here at Amazon.com. There is simply no comparison. ... Read more

Comprehensive & easy to use
I have 3 English/Portuguese dictionaries, and this is the best of them.Oxford usually does a great job, but Larousse beat them this time!The verb guide is extensive and easy to follow, and it has enough words to get 5 stars.

good for Brasilian, not Portuguese (from Portugal or its colonies)
very good and comprehensive dictionary.Only downside is that it has the Brasilian portuguese and not the Portugal language (where those differences exist).A combined Portugues and Brasialian dictionary and translation to and from English would be awesome, but this is not it.

About as useful as I needed.A few words or expressions were not accessible.I could not find the correct translation for "skin flap".

ARABIC SCRIPT TOO SMALL
A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. The Arabic script is so reduced in size that one strains to discern the diacritics (the vowelizations and 'dots'). Size is most important in Arabic printed script, since the diacritics are crucial for error-free understanding. I have better than 20/20 visual acuity but have to use a magnifying glass to ascertain the details of the Arabic script --- and even then not very comfortably.

I am sorry that I spent money on this decidedly 'unfriendly' opus. 'Awde/Smith (Hippocrene), an unassuming paperback, does MUCH better in the print department...!

Once again, Oxford University Press disappoints.

Since I don't speak Arabic and will never use this dictionary, I won't know how great this dictionary is.My sister says that these Engish-Arabics are hard to find, and I'm glad I found it on Amazon.

An essential purchase, but sometimes difficult to use
Learning Arabic is a long and difficult process for a native English speaker, and unfortunately, learners of this unusually difficult language have unusually weak resources at their disposal.Reviewers on this site have referenced other English-Arabic dictionaries such as al-Mawrid, but al-Mawrid is out of print in the US, and the copies I saw in Egypt were not really better than the Oxford English-Arabic dictionary, as far as I can remember.

So, this is the only serious English-Arabic dictionary on the market in the US, even though it is a problematic dictionary.The latest edition is from 1982 (The main Arabic-English dictionary, the Hans Wehr, was last published in the 1980's as well, and it's also difficult in its own ways).The most basic problem is that the dictionary often explains words rather than translating them.This is more useful for native Arabic speakers than native English speakers, and it's a common problem for many Arabic dictionaries.

Take the example of the word "modern" in this dictionary.The normal translation of "modern" is hadiith, but the dictionary gives 'asrii and then muhdath as translations.The former is closer in meaning to "contemporary" and while the latter does mean "modern", it's not nearly as common as hadiith.In a language with as many synonyms as Arabic, we need to be given useful, concise translations, so the word hadiith should be there.The word "modernization" is explained as meaning roughly "following the manner of the age" ("al-akhdh bi-nihj al-'asr"), but this is not a translation - it's an explanation.Google Translate gives modernization as tahdiith, which is much more useful.

That said, this is the most serious dictionary on the market, and it's full of good translations, despite the occasionally ponderous non-translations.I do think you need this book and the Hans Wehr dictionary if you are serious about learning Arabic.I find translations from English useful, so I'm still happy to have this dictionary.

Not the best available
This dictionary is not the best you can get as a beginner of language. It only includes the english-arabic dictionary, and you cannot look up arabic text... you also cannot look up words by the roots. A much better book is Awde & Smith's Arabic practical dictionary (Arabic-English/English-Arabic).

Dictionary
the type was so small, that you can't even read it without a magnifying glass.I wont' be able to use it and I'm not THAT old.

wrong pronunciation found
Entry 'fire' has wrong pronunciation in this 11th edition. Then how many mistakes are in this book? What does 11th edition mean? They let me be away from the book. I really await the 12th edition with those worries off.

It's a great dictionary, but
As always, Merriam-Webster dictionaries are good; they are what they are and anybody ordering one should know exactly what to expect. Contents are five star for the price - this isn't the OED. The reason for the one star deduction is that the open side page ends are solid. There is no indication where, say, the "M"'s or "Q"'s start. One must leaf through the pages and look at the headings. If I had known about this fact, I would have ordered a more expensive version.

Great for beginning students of Spanish, as well as for more advanced learners
Beginners and more advanced learners alike will enjoy the full-color and detailed illustrations, not only for their visual properties but also because they come labeled with the Spanish and English terms. This is great because you learn both terms--there were some words in English, especially technical and specialized vocabularies, that native English speakers may not even know IN ENGLISH, much less in Spanish!
The only shortcoming of this dictionary for me is that I would have liked to see some more dialectal variants of a given term.For example, the fruits and vegetable pictures are great because you know EXACTLY what item the term refers to, but the terms aren't very exhaustive on what a peach is called in Spain, or in México, or in Chile, etc., but maybe other Spanish students/speakers/learners aren't as concerned with "collecting" all the possible terms for a single object as I am. But all in all, it's a great read, perfect for students of all levels of Spanish and those curious in increasing their vocabulary in either or both languages. Some day I may get the Firefly that has all terms in Spanish, English, French, German and Italian, but I'm not in a huge hurry because my current investment has already given me plenty of "Oh, how neat!" moments.

Fantastic aide for beginneers and advanced
I bought this book for my sons who have taken Spanish in school and now use it in their jobs. It was recommended by one of their friends who is living in Peru. They love it and use it frequently. I highly recommend it!

Great fun exploring
I liked this book soo much I bought a copy to send to my sister to help her kids learn spanish. Our mom never really spoke to us in spanish, but she is now to the grandkids. I love exploring a subject and learning the spanish words as I look at the images. It even helped me identify trees when I visited a farm recently, thanks to the visuals.

I think this is more for leisurely viewing, rather than needing to look something up.

A Delightful and Informative Read
I first saw this great dictionary in a public library in Pueblo, Co. and was so intrigued I had to buy it. As usual Amazon had it for a great price. Can you imagine a two page spread showing a Boeing 747 with all its parts indicaqted in Spanish and English? How about a two page spread showing the seating of a symphony orchestra with the instrument names in both languages. Or, how about a picture of the parts of a bicycle or tools in your shop or garden.

There is something here for everyone! Over 3000 illustrations for illustration of 28,000 Spanish and English terms.

The best dictionary!
Hi, I'm brazilian teacher, translator and book reviewer in my country and I have to say... it's the best dictionary that i've ever had!! Amazing edition, paper, pictures, texts, CD-ROM... everything! You have to buy one too if you want to be good in your work!! I've never tought that it could be so good to me!

Great companion to my Mac
This is the paper version of the dictionary included in Mac OS X.I use the built-in one the most, but like to grab this one when away from the computer.Sometimes paper is better on the eyes too.

What I like most about this dictionary is the succinct definitions.They are easy to understand and don't send me on a word hunt with definitions that require definitions--explain the explanation syndrome.

What I like least is the weight.It's paper and there are a lot of definitions in it, so it is bound to be heavy.The hard-cover keeps it together pretty well.

This is a great dictionary than I can definitely recommend.

thorough dictionary with good quality paper
I was looking for a good dictionary but I kept finding ones made with cheap, tissue thin paper.I found this at the bookstore and compared it to others and ordered it on Amazon for a cheaper price.I am very happy with it.It is very thorough.

NODE and ODE in American Dress
American users should be alerted to the fact that the "New Oxford American Dictionary" is founded on the "New Oxford Dictionary of English," which has been retitled the "Oxford Dictionary of English." The NODE and the ODE, when considered on their own, are excellent--especially when one realizes that they place contemporary English usage in a global context, which is helpful for both ESL students and US citizens who may be unaware that international nuances exist. So, the chief problem with the NOAD is that it presents itself as being American but cannot escape from being essentially British in outlook. As a result, many strange definitions and usage examples are to be found when considered from an American perspective. For those who wish to use a one-volume dictionary that more adequately represents American English as it is spoken and used in the United States, the Random House Webster's College Dictionary or the Webster's New World College Dictionary would seem to be preferable to the NOAD, with the ODE or the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary being consulted for more obscure words and definitions, or for obtaining a better idea of how English is used internationally. ... Studying Chinese at College? Then get this!
I recently began studying Chinese at college, so I needed a good dictionary. From my past experience with studying Japanese, I knew that it is actually best to own more than one -- it just IS, believe me -- so I bought FIVE. Now, nearing the end of my first quarter of Chinese, I have had plenty of time to use all five of them and become acquainted with their strengths and weaknesses; and I can say without a doubt that the Tuttle Learner's Chinese-English Dictionary has proved to be the most useful by far.

There are certainly more thorough dictionaries. If you want such a thing, get the Oxford Chinese Dictionary. You'll probably never think of a word that it doesn't have. Don't expect to carry it with you to school though, because it's a monster. Don't get me wrong: I heartily recommend it, but only as a reference for HOME study.

From the class of "Small enough to carry to school, but thorough enough to be useful," a more comparable competitor would be the Oxford Beginner's Chinese Dictionary. That is a good dictionary, and it even claims to have more entries than the Tuttle Learner's Dictionary, too; but there are several ways in which I think the Tuttle is superior.

The most important is that the Oxford Beginner's Dictionary gives primary focus and emphasis to English-Chinese, not Chinese-English. It is 512 pages long, of which pages 1-156 are C-E entries while pages 167-450 (284 pages total) are E-C -- with the rest of the book being either introductory or supplementary material. By contrast, the Tuttle is 384 pages long, of which pages 1-289 are C-E and pages 290-336 (47 pages total) are an E-C "Word Finder" (which gives nothing but the Pinyin, Hanzi, and a page reference for the C-E entry).

If page percentages can be taken as "focus" (and I think it can), then the Oxford Beginner's is 55% English-Chinese, 30% Chinese-English, and 15% extra material; but the Tuttle Learner's is 75% Chinese-English, 12% English-Chinese, and 13% extra material. The Tuttle is smaller than the Oxford, yet has nearly twice the number of pages devoted to Chinese-English entries -- and if you've ever studied any language in a classroom setting, you'll know that looking up the other language's words to see what they mean in English is much more common (and useful) than the reverse.

Furthermore, while the Oxford claims a higher total number of entries ("15,000 Word and Phrases, 20,000 Translations," it says), it is important to realize that Oxford counts its E-C entries as separate from the C-E -- so when a word appears in both sections they count it TWICE, artificially inflating the alleged number of entries. Worse yet, not all of their E-C entries appear in the C-E section -- so you can look up an English word and get the Chinese equivalent, but you can NOT look up that same Chinese word to get the English.

This is not true of the Tuttle. The 4,800 entries they claim counts ONLY the Chinese-English; and the English-Chinese "Word Finder," while lacking descriptive entries, contains only words that ARE included in the C-E section.

And lastly, please note that the Oxford only rarely provides example sentences for its C-E entries; while the Tuttle provides at least one example (and often several) for nearly EVERY C-E entry.

Again, don't get me wrong: The Oxford Beginner's is also good, and I'm glad to have it among my small collection of Chinese dictionaries. But I only carry ONE dictionary with me to Chinese class, and that's the Tuttle Learner's.

A good beginner's dictionary but not good for traditional characters
About a decade ago I was learning Japanese and found an excellent dictionary in the form of Kodansha's Basic English-Japanese Dictionary. More recently, when I decided re-start learning Chinese (I had gone to Chinese school when I was younger, only to later regress to a grade 1 or 2 level afterwards), one of the first things I looked for was a dictionary for beginners similair to one I had before for Japanese. Tuttle's Learner's C-E dictionary seemed to fit the bill.

This dictionary does a pretty good job at catering to beginner students. Example sentences are a powerful learning tool and the various usage notes are handy. Unfortunately for me, my original educational background was with traditional Chinese characters and this dictionary is not very good for a beginner level student who uses traditional characters.

While other reviewers have mentioned that this dictionary has traditional characters in it, IMO, its support for traditional characters is token at best. The only time traditional character are given are for headwords that have one character. Any headwords that have two or more characters are listed in simplified form only. What is a *beginner* level student using traditional characters supposed to do when they encounter simplified characters in headwords?? Also just as frustrating, are the example sentences which are all in simplified. I guess 'frustrating' aptly sums up my experience with this dictionary; its excellent when going through entries that have no simplified characters but oh so frustrating when I run into them. If Tuttle made a version of this dictionary using traditional characters, my review would easily be 5 stars. Well, maybe more like 4.5 stars... there is a little bit more room for improvement.

So here's a couple of suggestions for improvement inspired by the Japanese dictionary mentioned at the beginning of my review. Firstly, make the main body of dictionary English to Chinese and leave the C-E part as an index in the back. This dictionary is targeted towards learners, right? So wouldn't E-C be more useful and easy for them? Secondly, add more content. The Kodansha dictionary is twice the thickness and according to cover, has about 4500 dictionary entries. It also has many more appendices covering various topics (Although that can be partially explained by Japanese grammar being much more complex than Chinese grammar).

Great dictionary for anyone studying Chinese
This Chinese dictionary is almost perfect for the beginner to intermediate student of Mandarin Chinese. You will probably need a more comprehensive Chinese dictionary as well as this dictionary as it only contains about 5,000 words. For the most part though, this dictionary contains most of the words you will encounter during the first to second year of college level Chinese.

The entries in this dictionary are laid out in pinyin order which makes it much easier to look up a word or character than dictionaries organized by Chinese character. In the case where you don't know the pronunciation of a word or character, there a two other more traditional methodsfor looking them up.

The layout of the entries in this dictionary is also well done. The entries are uncrowded with each word printed in blue to make it stand it out.Sample sentences, of which there are many in both characters and pinyin,are printed in bold to differentiate them from the definitions.

There are other useful features to be found. Included are cultural and usage notes spread throughout the dictionary. Although it is not an English-Chinese dictionary, it contains an English to Chinese cross-reference. At the endof the dictionary there is a kinship diagram to help the student understand the various words describing family relationships.

Works for me
This dictionary is very nice and practical. Every entry has several examples of sentences that use the word, which is very useful to me, but what truly takes it apart from the other "Beginner's Chinese" dictionary that I also got (Oxford) is the fact that all compound words and broken apart into their basic components, so when learning a new compound word you actually learn 3 words all in once. For example 'computer' = 'diannao' where diannao=(dian=electricity)+(nao=brain).
By doing this, I actually only have to learn the two component words and remember that 'computer' is the combination of the two. That makes it much easier for me to learn these compound words, because I don't have to store and recall 'arbitrary' sequences of characters and tones for each concept, but instead just a sequence of two basic words. And since the basic words are reused over and over in compound words, my studying is made much easier.
This is a Chinese-to-English dictionary, but at the end there is a English-to-Chinese reverse index, that is it contains entries like queue=hang (p.87), so for the most part it can easily be used as an English-to-Chinese dictionary.

For me it was definitely worth every buck.

More than a dictionary
I bought this dictionary for my daughter for school.She loves the extras in it, like the phrases and additional notes.She said that makes it even better than she expected.Great choice for high school Spanish class.

Good but Oxford dictionary is better
The Vox Compact Spanish-English Dictionary is good, and weighs one pound 12 ounces. The Oxford Spanish Desk Dictionary is better and weighs two pounds. Neither fits in your pocket. I suggest buying either a pocket dictionary for traveling (light), or buying the Oxford dictionary for studying or traveling not so light. There's no reason to buy the Vox dictionary, except maybe price. Also, the Oxford Spanish Dictionary is mis-titled, it should be the Oxford Spanish-Engish Dictionary. It's equally for English speaking learning Spanish or Spanish speakers learning English.

Spanish-English Dictionary
This is the best Spanish-English dictionary I have found.I have purchased several for my ESL classes.

Poorly Made
Although many people use this dictionary for their classes, I have noticed that they do no spend enough time to update the dictionary.There are many current words that are not in, like blog. However, the most unappeling thing is that their books as poorly make.They one section of the dictionary in one font, and oter sections in another, it looke like they just put pieces together.

I would not recomend it.The paper quality is not the best it rips quite easily too.Not impressed at all.

Varying Dialects
It is quite complete with all the verb forms, comjugations and tenses that we learned in High School. But, because of the varying dialects, there were a few words I could not find. Living in the Southwest, the Mexican influence over the Spanish is marked. Perfect for 5th and 6th graders
My 6th grader needed a dictionary and a thesaurus for school (and my 5th grader is always asking me for synonyms) and so I headed over to one of the big book stores expecting to have to buy TWO books. I was quite happy when I saw this one, with both dictionary and thesaurus combined. (It's a lot easier to handle one book than two; it's a lot better for one book on the dining room table than two!)

The synonyms easily stand out in small little gray boxes right in the same listing as the definition. They seem to give just about the right number of synonyms so it won't overwhelm my kids. (It is not the The Synonym Finder.) It even has a concise guide to grammar in the back. This thing is perfect for my 5th and 6th graders. Five stars for that purpose.

Don't buy it !

Believe it or not, there is no way to go directly to the word you are interested in; or even directly to the beginning of the section containing its starting letter !

Print is very small
Book has a lot of information, but the print is very small.I definitely need my glasses in order to read it.

Okay.Limited as a dictionary and as a thesaurus.
The other reviewers appear to address the printed version rather than the Kindle-specific version.I am focusing on the Kindle Application.

Strengths -- easily used under Kindle platform, terse, usually is clear in distinguishing parts of speech, and it can be used as the default dictionary.

Weaknesses
1.Definitions are not necessarily any more complete than those from the New Oxford American Dictionary(already built-in on Kindle).Several that I used tonight were less so.

2.Definitions for one part of speech are often dependent on another definition listed for another part of speech (a weakness of many dictionaries that is annoying for more complex or unfamiliar words)
----Simple example:the word anger is both a noun and a verb,Thus they define the verb form as "to make angry".

3.Thesaurus component is okay and gives additional ideas for the verb "anger".However antonyms are very limited if the purpose is to use this as a writing resource.Very few choices.
----For example:antonyms for anger (verb) were delight, gratify and please. But other common options are missing such as calm, sooth, pacify. One would have to keep browsing and unless you set this as the default, you keep ending up in another dictionary when trying to do that.

4.Word Origins are sometimes given, mostly abbreviated and with less detail than in Kindle's Default Dictionary.

I have not compared word counts. Sheer mass of definitions is a misleading index of quality.

Good book, and even better bonus CD - but Amazon app buyers beware!

Details on the caveat:
I made the mistake of ordering this from the Amazon app on my new Droid2 cell phone, instead of going directly to Amazon.de to research and order a German language dictionary.The Amazon app provides NOTHING by way of Product Description, but since the picture of the cover prominently displays "German dictionary" on the cover, I took that to mean this is the type of dictionary a German native might use to look up German language definitions for German words.The tip off should have been that the title wasn't Deutsches Wörterbuch.Duh...If you're reading these reviews at the Amazon website, you can clearly see by the Product Description that this book "provides authoritative coverage of German and English", but again, the app provides no such clue.


Having said that:
I am keeping this dictionary anyway. As a student of the German language, I need all the resources I can lay my hands on and, while this volume isn't quite as thorough as my Langenscheidt's Condensed Muret~Sanders German/English and English/German set - providing fewer entries (270,000 vs 320,000), it does so in one volume vs Langenscheidt's two.

Also, the accompanying Speak German CD will come in quite handy for my wife who is beginning her German studies and whose ear needs to hear correct pronunciation of German words.Even better, when the Speak German application is running on your PC, it also provides a tool for German->English or English->German (depending on program setting) translations via cursor flyover.I find this actually a more useful tool than the dictionary itself.


Conclusion:
So, while there are better bilingual dictionaries out there, this one's not bad for a one volume resource, and the bonus CD provides a lot of extra bang for your buck!



FYI I'm just ordered the Wahrig Deutsches Wörterbuch to from Amazon.de.That's what I was looking for in the first place.

Best dictionary for English speakers taking up a serious study of German
This dictionary is an excellent reference for use by students who are planning to read literature and write papers in German or who are studying the language in depth.It offers a large vocabulary and, most importantly, extensive examples of usage--indispensable for someone trying to express him/herself correctly in German.It also offers notes on culture.For instance, there are explanations of the term "Blauer Engel" and of "Oktoberfest", among many others.

The dictionary comes with a CD ROM that can be used in a laptop to make the reference material portable.However, this is basically a large desktop volume, not a quick reference for travelers.If you are looking for a reasonably-priced, extensive reference for studying German, then this is the one for you.

Excellent German Dictionary.
This is an excellent, larger-sized German Dictionary, I have the smaller version, as well. This has many, many word definitions and a very helpful selection of various German grammar rules, especially useful for written German. This does have the "new" spellings and many "new" words. I recommend this as a good, standard reference Dictionary to keep at home. If you wish to have a good Dictionary to carry around with you, try the smaller version of the Oxford German Dictionary. There are fewer words, but more than enough for what you might need in a classroom situation.The large dictionary might be a bit intense for beginners, but sooner or later, every German student will wish to own this. Recommended.

Great supplement for early learners
This book has received some bad reviews for being incomplete, but i think those reviews are unfair. if you're a beginner like I am and you're already taking lessons and/or exposed to spoken Portuguese, this book can serve as a solid cheat sheet to refresh your memory and also serves as a quick reference for common grammar or pronunciation questions that come up in everyday conversation. Don't expect to learn Portuguese from this book (or for that matter, from any book) alone.

I am especially happy to have this for Kindle because I mark the word lists and tips about grammar rules that I frequently need to use (and often forget). I can also easily search for definitions when needed.

Between this book, practicing with my friends and an online course I feel like I'm off to a decent start. If you have the same resources I highly recommend including this book.

Brazilian Portuguesse Dictionary

has a quick refrence guide, phrasebook content. This is a must have!

Poor excuse for a dictionary
Although this book does offer useful information on Brazil and the language, it is a sad excuse for a dictionary. More like a vocabulary list than anything.
The worst aspect of this book is its description of Brazilian pronunciation; it bears absolutely no resemblance to the way Brazilians actually speak (no mention of the softening of the T and D in certain situations, like the final d in saudade, for example).
Very misleading and not worth the money.


Very helpful with building vocabulary
I bought this dictionary for a Brazilian friend who already speaks and reads some English. It is most helpful for filling in the gaps in his vocabulary, but does not include many pronunciation or usage details. It is great for when he is reading and runs across an unfamiliar English word, and simply wants to know what the word means. For pronunciation and usage, a dictionary such as the Larousse Concise Dictionary gives more information. I gave my friend both dictionaries, and he mainly uses this one, then refers to the Larousse for details when needed.

Learn English from America's language experts
Merriam-Webster(tm) has served users of the English language over the past 160 years and now introduced a dictionary aimed specifically for learners of English as a second language. The dictionary provides coverage of both American And British English, and contains over 160,000 usage examples, demonstrating how the language is used in real life. I have found Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's English Dictionary to be comprehensive and absolute valuable. Combined with another advanced learner's dictionary, like that of Oxford, for example, you have a gold mine of English usage. This dictionary certainly will benefit anyone desiring to understand and use English. Highly recommended!

Worth buying!
My high school purchased these dictionaries for the Special Education/struggling students and they are a great resource.

Large number of example sentences, and free partial download
Ease of use rivals that of the 7th edition of Oxford Advanced Learner's but word-completeness is about half as much (100K words vs 183K). This limitation is made up by its large number of well-selected example sentences/phrases - very useful for both native and foreign speakers.

The free online Mobipocket-download version of the dictionary is easy to use but unfortunately the very useful "Geographical Names" section (16 pages of place names with IPA pronunciations) is deleted from the online version. When the Mobipocket application is invoked on your PC, you can turn on a feature so that pressing the "F2" key will give you an instant small pop-up window of the word-definition of any highlighted word on your Windows screen. It's great for reading any heavy-duty online documents or web pages. I'm getting addicted to this feature! But then the Oxford Advanced Learner's dictionary (7th edition) is available on Mobipocket too so maybe this F2 feature is similarly available.

If you have young children using this dictionary, try picking the paperback version instead of hardback since the former is more kids-friendly for page flipping, and less intimidating than the bulkier hardback one - even though the latter costs just a few dollars more.

Overall, highly recommended if you treasure good examples more than word completeness. If not, you should probably pick Oxford Advanced Learner's.

Inadequate as a bilingual dictionary; decent to get the meaning
This dictionary presents an interesting quandary for any serious English - Spanish legal translator (or interpreter) as it has one fairly strong aspect, and one conspicuously weak one.

For those looking to have a certain legal term in one language explained in "the other" language, this is probably a fairly good option, especially considering its reasonable price point. The entry texts are verbose and accessible enough to appeal to the non-legally initiated, and examples make sure that you "get it" what a term means.

However...

This is above all a bilingual dictionary which - if only held up to the standard set by its own title - falls terribly short as such. One of my personal acid tests is looking up "felony" and sure enough: quite unworthy of any serious lexicographic reference work, it offers the false cognate "felonía" as a "translation." This illustrative case lays bare two abominable weaknesses for a serious bilingual dictionary:

- A disconnect in register, and beyond that, a failure in linguistic rigor, which speaks directly to the question whether this dictionary is deserving of an authoritative status. The answer is sadly in the negative.
- A semantic disconnect which does a tremendous disservice to speakers of either language: offering a false cognate improperly as a suggested and hence valid translation is not only incorrect, it is disrespectful to both languages. "Close enough" doesn't cut it, less so "getting the gist" of what something means in another language, and how to properly use it.

For these aforementioned reasons, while acknowledging the enormous practical value it can have for use by casual non-translators (say, to quickly look something up and clarify it in a conversation setting) because of its strength in explaining the meaning, it falls in my opinion terribly short as a bilingual dictionary: something which should give a reliable and by all means correct translation in another language.

If you're in the translation business, or if you have to commit the result of a consultation to paper, my unsalted opinion is this: if at all you feel you must buy this, put it toward the end of your list of priorities. Lacking the thorough linguistic and lexicographic review and upgrade it direly needs, it is perhaps an interesting addition for the dictionary collector, but not much more than that. Only marginally valuable.

Interesting but out of date and missing many key terms
Of the numerous Spanish<>English legal dictionaries I use regularly, this is consistently the one least likely to include the terms I need. I suspect it's partly because this is an abridged edition, and partly because the sources that the author(s) cite include very few publications that are even remotely recent. Another problem: the entries generally provide narrative explanations rather than functionally equivalent terms. The explanations are cogent, clear, interesting, and often establish differences in meaning between different countries. However, this approach is not helpful if you're a translator trying to figure out the best English-language equivalent for a Spanish legal term or vice versa. ... Read more

Out of date
As a few others have pointed out, this is a 1990s reprint of a book written in 1943. Accepted pronunciation has changed in small but significant ways since then. We can easily understand movies like The Philadelphia Story, with Katharine Hepburn & Cary Grant, but we don't expect people to talk like that anymore.

This dictionary is ok if you want a dated pronunciation (which may indeed sound "cultured"), or if you are willing to figure out a few rules for updating these pronunciations. But I prefer the Oxford Dictionary of Pronunciation for Current English, by Upton, Kretzschmar, and Konopka. It has American (and British) IPA transcriptions and was brand new in 2001. Trusted, reliable resource
After extensively searching and reading reviews, I purchased this dictionary 2 years ago, after my second semester of college Spanish, before going onto 2 more semesters. This book has been reliable and accurate. The usage explanations and side bars are great. Often there are very different ways to render a particular idea or feeling and this dictionary does a great job of explaining the different options and why. I have depended on this book for many an essay or report and have never once been corrected by a professor when I used this book to guide my word choice. I can't recall ever seeking a word that wasn't there. I have watched other students struggle with other dictionaries and have never regretted this full sized dictionary, carrying it with me always despite the size.
In fact, when I found a dictionary/verb book for my iPhone (and now iPad), I continued to use this book to verify the info in the app for many months because I had come to trust this book so very much.
Don't waste your money on a concise dictionary if you plan to go beyond beginning Spanish, this book along with Barron's 501 verbs is all you will ever need, and well worth the cost.

It seems to me that quite a number of people that speak Spanish pretty well still have a horrible accent because in Spanish they break the syllables down differently.For example in English we want to say Rod-ri-go and in Spanish one says Ro-dri-go.So I am looking for a dictionary that offers a little help with pronunciation of the Spanish.Granted it is easier to pronounce Spanish then English but on the same hand it wouldn't require a great deal of effort to give us a little more info.For example the word adherirse (to adhere) is listed as a-dhe-RIR-se instead.Anyone know of such a dictionary?

As a serious, but beginning Spanish student, I have been pleased with this dictionary. It has been helpful, useful, and interesting. But I have sometimes wondered if I should have purchased the larger version.

clear, informative and well worth the price
Larousse offers a strong and affordable bilingual dictionary for persons who are studying Spanish--or even Spanish speakers studying English, for that matter. As dictionaries go, this IS one of the better ones and this edition of Larousse's Spanish-English/English-Spanish dictionary is bound to be a big help to many students.

People have noted that when Larousse updates their dictionaries they do more than window dressing--and they are right. You get great entries that reflect the changing times: the definitions of "software," "hostile takeover" and baby sitter" are all included in this latest edition of the dictionary. Moreover, you DO get words that reflect the different nuances of a word whenever necessary. I agree with the reviewer who writes that there are multiple translations for words like "loop;" this is the hallmark of a fine dictionary.

The dictionary even includes entries for "foul" language; this also helps the user. The 64 page guide to communication is very nicely done.

The pages are made of paper that is slightly thinner than I would like but it's more than sufficient for the student. This is a minor point, naturally. The typeface is easy to read and I like how you can use this dictionary to translate back and forth by looking up entries in either Spanish or English.

I recommend this dictionary for all students of Spanish or even Spanish speaking persons studying English. Not only will this satisfy students at the elementary level; it will also be most beneficial for students at the intermediate and advanced levels of study.

Help for a beginning translator
I was required to purchase a Spanish-English/English-Spanish dictionary for a translation course I am taking.I chose this dictionary from a list I was given mainly because of its lower cost in comparison to the others.This dictionary is SO helpful when I'm working on a translation.I especially like the entries covering idiomatic expressions and the examples of use in context, when they are present, which is not the majority of the time.While this dictionary does not beat translating with monolingual dictionaries in English and Spanish, it is an excellent resource for general, everyday use.

Great dictionary but not travel friendly.
I love this English/Spanish dictionary.I used it quite a bit in my Interpreting and Translating classes.It's easy to use and you can find almost any word in it.My only complaint is that it is very large and bulky which made it heavy to carry around while at school.Other than that, a great resource.

I needed a great Spanish/English dictionary for my college Spanish course and this one was FANTASTIC!It had just about everything I could have needed for my class.
