4-0 out of 5 stars Learning Swahili
I am planning to visit Eastern Africa this year and had ordered the Rosetta Stone Swahili language lessons. However, after months of trying to figure out what was being said, I finally ordered this book.It was a great addition to my learning tool box. The book is small, light andeasy to carry. It is well organized for both English to Swahili and Swahili to English translations. The book is also organized into sections for introductions, travel, money, government, etc. It's just what I needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for translating
I really like this swahili dictionary. It begins with a quick grammar lesson on the swahili language and then gives you some examples. It is not only a english to swahili dictionary, but also a swahili to english dictionary.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic, not Tanzanian Swahili
This book is ok as a basic translation dictionary.A lot of the words in this dictionary are not Tanzanian Swahili, this book may be intended more for travelers heading to Kenya or Uganda.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK at best
The title says it all.I think this will be most helpful as a phrasebook for temporary travelers, since the dictionary is extremely incomplete.

2-0 out of 5 stars this book never has the word you want
I found that this dictionary is incomplete and would really only be very helpful to someone with very rudimentary Kiswahili. I would recommend this book only to the casual traveler and not anyone intending to stay in East Africa for extended periods or anyone undertaking serious study of the language. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars not very complete
Tagalog is very hard to me. This is for the quick vacation guide which will serve you well in that way. The thing is almost all Filipinos speak English and some speaks other languages as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars pocket tagalog dictionary
My Dad arrived here in US couple of months. He told me he forgot his book at the Philippines. so he told me to buy one for him. I checked out Books a Million but I did not find it.. Ive been buying books here at Amazon.com so I tried luckily I found it. so far my dad like it..

5-0 out of 5 stars not meant to be exhaustive..
If you are looking for a good basic one, easy to carry around, look no further. This is a nice handy dictionary.

If you are wanting an exhaustive dictionary, obviously don't get a pocket one. This fits the caliber like it should.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great English-Tagalog dictionary
This is a great English-Tagalog dictionary - actually one of the only ones that I found while searching. It's thin enough to carry in your pocket or to place in a bag.Shipping was breif.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate
I used this book as a supplement to a Tagalog class.I am a Filipina, born & raised in the US and can understand the language & I needed a refresher course on certain words. It does have the most common words, the book itself is thin, about the size of a paperbook so it's not exactly "pocket-sized." But it can fit into a small purse. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for modest needs
This bilingual dictionary's two greatest virtues are its compact yet readable format and its affordable price. And, as a bonus, there are brief grammatical summaries and lists of irregular verbs. These reminders are packaged with the two-way translations for convenience, never meant as a substitute for an exhaustive reference.

This meets my limited needs, as someone who comes across the occasional French word in passing. Most high school language students will also find that it has all the vocabulary they need. This isn't a scholar's reference, though. Translated definitions tend towards the terse, so they won't cover all usages of a term. And, to keep cost down, it's printed on pulp stock, so it won't last forever even if handled gently. It offers plenty if you don't need much, and that's good enough for me right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dictionary
I receied the French dictionary in good time and was glad it was available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very usable dictionary
This is a very usable bilingual dictionary. With 70,000 entries, it's all I've ever needed to get through daily life in French or even read non-technical books.Complete pronunciation information is given for entries in both languages. At the beginning of the French-English section is a very comprehensive summary of French grammar, including the complete declensions of 76 irregular verbs. With such a summary, you don't need to carry a grammar book along if you have this dictionary with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing piece of reference
Whether you like French or not, this small package packs a huge punch w/ its plethora of words. What really pleased me were all the idioms and phrases I didn't expect in a ENG-FR dictionary as small as this one. Its range of words, from the usual to the oddball, is great and I keep it next to me always when writing in FR. I've yet to find a dictionary as small as this one yet with the same wealth of reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Dictionary with One of Few Decent Overviews
Probably the best of the Bantam New College series dictionaries, in my opinion. Its simple guide to French usage is simple enough to retain its clarity yet provide a good-enough overview so that one might compose small sentences with fair accuracy ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book with some flaws
I've been studying Arabic for the past two years with Al-Kitaab, and realized that although I could often talk about very complex topics in Arabic, I often lacked very simple vocabulary for everyday things. I found this book to be really fantastic and useful for learning everyday words (wall, lamp), as well as very detailed specific things (kinds of tools for example). My main complaint is that I wish it would give the words with tashkeel for easier pronunciation, as well as giving the plural form of the word. It also would have been very helpful to include some more culturally specific words.

2-0 out of 5 stars ArabicEnglish Bilingual Dictionary
I am not very happy with this, although it arrived on time and in perfect condition. I find it difficult to look up and is quite restricted in the words available. It is not a comprehensive dictionary. It is an interesting book to flick through, more of a coffee table book where you will learn something everytime you pick it up but as a dictionary it is poor.

2-0 out of 5 stars don't bother getting this for a trip to the Middle East
This dictionary might be quite good for an Arab visiting England, but for a Western tourist going to an Arab country it will be useful only for medical emergencies, etc. or for describing you own culture. It is just a rehash of the German, French, Spanish... dictionaries. That would be alright for a European culture but not for any Arab country that I have ever visited (5 in all). Where are all the things from the Arab's world? You can find everything from England of course, all the parts of a church but not even the word for minaret or the ababic "pulpit" (Minbar),etc. Lots of beatuiful northern landscapes (what about deserts?), all the games and sports which are not played, all the plants and trees which don't grow there (all the different types of English gardens!).All kinds of alcoholic beverages and all the food (cuts of pork) which you won't find in an Arabic country unless you just eat at the Hilton or Marriott (or, God forbid, Mac Donald's). Where are all the Arabic dishes: esfihas, chick pea spread, babghanouch, kibbe? Nothing! I wouldn't bother taking this on a trip to an Arabic country. I could probably get something more useful, even if less sofisticated, when I arrived there at the airport. With a culture so diferent the editors should have done a bit of research and editing/expansion before issuing a dictionary like this. Typical result of ignorance (arrogant lack of respect for?) of another culture!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Complement for Modern Standard Arabic Courses
DK's VISUAL ARABIC-ENGLISH BILINGUAL DICTIONARY is an excellent text to complement beginning Modern Standard Arabic courses. Not only is it visually attractive, but the up-to-date vocabulary, arranged by subjects (appearance, study, work, sports, etc.), has all the words that students want to know right away.I believe that it is absolutely essential, when learning new (concrete) words in a foreign language, that the student start right away to associate each word with an image. When a student looks at a door, for instance, he or she immediately thinks of the Arabic word for it.There is none of this "That's a door and the word for door in Arabic is...." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I am still new to the Hindi language but i find this dictionary to be quite extensive. I recommend it to anyone who is beginning to learn the language especially through written form and needs to know the definition of a new word.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful dictionary
Very good dictionary, as I expected from an Oxford press series dictionary. Note that this dictionary is meant for English speakers, which makes it very easy to use. 70'000 entries makes it a very complete but also compact dictionary. It is more than what you need to start, so you will use it for a long time as you progress in studying the language.

4-0 out of 5 stars probably the best one out there
What I like about this dictionary is it includes
1) origins of words
2) sex of words
3) various connotations of meaning
4) uses of words in phrases
5) romanised word pronunciation
6) specifies transitive v intransitive verbs (which one must know to use perfective tense)

What I don't like about this dictionary
1) words that are compositions of other words are sometimes hard to find. You have to guess
which words it is composed from and look under that word. for instance, avishvasi might be found under vishvas and so forth.

I also found a mistake in this dictionary the other day. They had a particular word as masculine when it was in reality feminine. I have also found a mistranslated word, given as a verb when it is a noun. So it's not perfect. As a result, I would suggest buying one or more other dictionaries for comparison purposes.

That being said this dictionary is the most complete one I have so far. It is what English speakers have come to expect from dictionaries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Hindi-English Dictionary
Can't say enough good things about this book.We are just beginning to learn Hindi. This is invaluable to us in learning this challenging language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for anyone learning Hindi
Many dictionaries are available that go both directions, Hindi to English and English to Hindi. These are very convenient. But if you are reading Hindi news or books you're going to find lots of words that aren't in these dictionaries. This is where the Oxford Hind-English dictionary comes in handy.I can't imagine a more complete dictionary. If Oxford had added the English to Hindi dictionary to this you'd need a friend to help carry it.It's that heavy with vocabulary.Well worth getting. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pocket dictionary with one flaw. . . .
My rating belies the fact that I like this dictionary a lot. It gives many examples of usage that gives you a better understanding of the language. However, it has one major flaw: it does not notify you, the inexperienced student, if a verb is irregular and offers you not help in conjugation other than the examples provided, which are not numerous enough for you to be able to conjugate every verb tense. Thus, I gave this dictionary to a friend and bought HarperCollins Beginner's Spanish Dictionary, 2nd Edition (C) 2005. This dictionary is larger but still manageable, and it shows you how to fully conjugate every verb in the dictionary. My advice, though, is to check a book store first to find one that suits your taste. With a dictionary like this, it's probably not necessary to buy _501 Spanish Verbs_. Also, Larousse has larger dictionaries that do give conjugation information, but their small b&w print is harder to read than either this dictionary or the HarperCollins one, which use three colors (green here; blue in HC).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent student dictionary of Spanish & English
This Spanish/English student dictionary is simply excellent. It contains 20,000 examples of words in context, which makes learning a lot easier. The examples are of current usage cerca 2005.There are also cultural notes and tips on grammar.Anyone who is learning Spanish or English will find this dictionary user-friendly and full of helpful information. It's also very inexpensive.All-in-all I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to learn either language. It's an investment that will pay off handsomely. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Hebrew Helper!
Excellent book for those who are beginners, it has the transliteration and the Hebrew letters, which helps pronounce it correctly.Five stars for excellent work!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars HEBREW DICTIONARY
At first I was concern because it took a little longer than I thought. Two weeks of waiting is not bad.I'm satisfied, considering I bought the book for a reasonably price and it's in a excellent condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
This is a great Dictionary. It is just what I needed. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A dictionary that covers vocabulary sounds as well as translations
Most Hebrew dictionaries will give a meaning and write the term in Hebrew letters. This one helps those not accustomed to working in a strange alphabet. It tells the reader what the Hebrew terms sound like by spelling the translated words in roman lettering. Transliterating really helps. HA

3-0 out of 5 stars A nice try, but not there yet
Some day, someone will write a properly transliterated dictionary that does what I need it to do -- but unfortunately, this isn't it.

Why on Earth didn't the author use a more logical transliterating system, like the one used in the Foreign Service Institute course, which is one of only two pronunciation-based courses available?

If you want to learn to speak and understand Hebrew quickly, transliteration is the way to go -- NOT by puzzling out written material that you're not even pronouncing properly. After you can handle the language competently, that's the time to learn how it's represented in print. But it's not efficient to bury the learner in all the details of spelling and the alphabet, and dots or no dots, right off the bat.(And trying to find, in a regular dictionary, a Hebrew word you've only heard is like finding a needle in a haystack, when the vowels are just ignored.)

Back to the transliteration in this book, though:Instead of a logical "One letter represents one sound" system, like the F.S.I. uses, he's chosen an awkward and cumbersome series of digraphs, which are supposed to make it easier, but which make the alphabetizing a mess, when we have "kh" and "sh" and "ts" and "oo" and "ee" all over the place, when they only represent one sound each. And it was a good idea to try to reflect the fact that so many speakers drop the "h", but it further confuses the order, with many entries seeming to be out of place.

Some day someone will write a book like this and revise the transliteration to be more logical and useful. It might have to be me..... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Pictionary
Excellent for teaching ESL or to use with a child. It's a wonderful tool for storytelling and building vocabulary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Picture Dictionary
I was very pleased with our purchase of this product.I originally purchased both the new and the old, thinking I might use the older one. After comparing, however, I felt they had made sufficient improvements to warrant purchasing the newer edition for the needs of our program. Many items of technology were included and the illustrations are wonderful. This book is well organized to quickly find items even if you don't speak English.Great for young people and adults.I did note that male/female body parts were not illustrated or listed. This would not be a resource for one trying to communicate using these terms to a doctor or school official even. This seemed somewhat puritan... but perhaps this was deemed necessary in order that it span age groups... which this definitely does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I've been using the OPD for several years with my English Language classes. The second edition is nicely updated with contemporary images and relevant vocabulary.Good price through Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars My preschooler loves this book
I have been reading out of this on a regular basis (average 2 days a week, maybe more) to my 3 1/2 year old for, I think, a year. We're only about 2/3 of the way done with it.It's very meaty. He just never gets tired of it.He requests this book more than any other. He even has a nickname for it--he calls it "Op-ed."I know the book is meant for learners of English as a second language, but it turns out that, at least as far as we're concerned, it's wonderful for learners of English as a first language!

It's a wonderful opportunity to discuss, basically, the world.I explain everything, and he is fascinated, and I am delighted that he is fascinated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Value!!!
My ESL students prefer the OPD over all the others.Plus, it is much less expensive! There are low-cost matching workbooks available as well. This book is so good, I had to buy one for my own daughter (5 yrs), because it is better than any of the kids illustrated dictionaries out there. She likes to study the animals, foods, medical & dental, cars, tools, musical instruments and holidays. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Dictionary, Not Pocket Sized!
This Pocket Oxford Spanish Dictionary is a brick! I was looking for a good dictionary to take with me on a trip to Nicaragua this summer. I wanted a small dictionary I could keep in a pocket or a fanny pack. This dictionary would pull my pants off or make my fanny pack uncomfortable to wear. It would be a great dictionary to use for a Spanish class, but it is definitely not a light travel dictionary. The cover is paper too. It would get destroyed on a trip. I have seen some dictionaries that have a plastic cover that would be great for traveling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a "pocket" dictionary
This is an incredible resource for anyone working between the Spanish and English languages (very thorough even compared to the Webster's New World Spanish Dictionary); however, it is NOT a pocket dictionary as titled. The dimensions did not sound that big to me when I read them online because I overlooked the 2 inch thickness and weight.Unless you're wearing Jencos, forget it!

5-0 out of 5 stars dictionary
While it seems I ordered two when I just needed one, the dictionary itself is the best of its kind on the market.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good but very big.
Very good dictionary, but not even Shaq has a pocket big enough for this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars falling apart

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I've had my Larousse for almost 8 years now and it has served me extremely well.I've found it useful for my coursework in the U.S. and while living in France. It's thorough (80,000 translations), the translations are accurate, and I really like the phonetic pronunciation guides. Most of the entries are pretty straightforward, but it does include some examples, as well as some useful common expressions in French.Due to its size, it's not best for carrying around while playing the tourist, but it is great as a reference book.I don't know how many papers I've written with its help.I've gone through numerous dictionaries in numerous languages and think Larousse is one of the best makers out there.

Ce dictionnaire vous offre une petite taille, un texte lisible, plusieurs significations et exemples d'usage où nécessaires, et pas mal de phrases utiles. Il suffit pour les nouvelles et pour la plupart des textes, mais pour les lectures plus littéraires, bien sûr, il faudra que le lecteur recoure à un dictionnaire comme Collins Robert French Unabridged Dictionary, 8th Edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to lessons
Fairly easy to understand - contains a lot of information - not too confusing.I think it is a really good addition to audio lessons, or to find a quick phrase while traveling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best French Dictionary for the Anglophone
Simply put, this is the best French-English/English-French dictionary I've found yet. Even in the more concise editions, there isn't often a word or translation missing. It is sturdy, compact, and easy to use, making it ideal for even the beginning student or traveler (and for the more advanced student, this company also puts out an excellent French language dictionary). Forget any other French/English dictionary--this is the best you'll find. Whoever says that this dictionary is anything less than superb and fit for its purpose ought to be stuck trying to learn Russian from one of those "Living Language" courses--eeek! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Portable, but not too small, and just excellent!
Like all Langenscheidt Dictionaries I have come across, its quality is great.Anybody who has used a Langenscheidt knows what I am talking about. But what I like about this one especially is the perfect size, since it is small enough for taking along in a bag, yet not too short. The material of the cover is superb because it is beautiful,as well as easy to clean if needed, and it is flexible as a paperback, but lasts in good shape for a long time (as I have seen until now, it lasts like forever).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best German Pocket Dictionary Around
I started using this dictionary in 1999 when I had my first German class.Six years later my German comprehension has finally reached university level and I still find myself using it for quick references.I very rarely have not been able to find a word in this compact dictionary, and its compactness is by far its best quality. All the relative articles are given (unlike many beginners dictionaries), although there is no pronunciation guide.I also love how it shows no signs of wear and tear after almost daily use.For a source with more in depth references I strongly recommend http://dict.leo.org/ (from the Technical University of Munich). This is especially true for translators that have to know what a certain word in different contexts means.

5-0 out of 5 stars Traumhaft!!
This is one of the better German dictionaries I've come across. It is perfect for college or high school use.

The covers are a thick plastic-type of material which makes this volume stay together much longer, especially if it's put in a backpack and lugged around a lot (as mine is).

The pages are SNOW WHITE and very easy to read, unlike the HarperCollins (ISBN 0062737503) which has newspaper-colored pages. The font is kind of small but that shouldn't be a problem for most college and high school students.

This is called a "pocket dictionary" which makes it sound small but it is not really that small. It's a little bit larger than an average sized romance novel, and a little bit wider. It's very thick and heavy and when I stood it up against a pop can for size comparison it's about a half an inch taller than the pop can.

The pronunciations are given in IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), which I consider a plus. IPA is not hard to learn and German pronunciation is pretty straight-forward anyway. If you can spell a word, you automatically know how it's pronounced.

All in all I REALLY like this dictionary and I think it serves the purpose of being a college dictionary really well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
This dictionary was a required book for my lower-level college German classes, and I can see why. I also have a Webster's German dictionary, and I am not as pleased with it as I am with the Langenscheidt. It is a great size to carry about in your bag, and, despite all the use (and abuse!) it has seen, mine is still in really good shape. In fact, I liked this so well that I have two copies - one for my desk at home, and the other to keep in my bag for school. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a good, usable German dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This book has survived being stuffed into my bookbag everyday for several school years, and I've taken it with me on a trip to Germany.I'm planning on taking it with me when I go to Germany in a few weeks. The spine hasn't broken and the plastic cover hasn't torn. It's rare that I haven't been able to find the word that I needed in this book, and the list of irregular verbs is very helpful.I own two German-English dictionaries, and, in spite of the fact that the other one is thicker and looks more likely to be useful, I absolutely prefer this one. ... Speak and write perfect English!
• BBI teaches you how to combine words with words to form phrases (so you can say “
mortgaged to the hilt; I want something badly”). • BBI also teaches you how to combine words into structures to form clauses and sentences (so you can say “I
want you to go = What I want is for you to go”). • So BBI helps you with both vocabulary and grammar.
• BBI shows you important vocabulary and grammatical differences between American and British English.
• BBI gives you plenty of examples that can serve as models for your own use of English.
• Some of these examples are authentic quotations from works of American and British literature.

This Third Edition of the BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English is an expanded and updated version of the First Edition (1986) and its Revised Edition (1997), both of which were favorably received. In this third edition, the contents of the BBI have been increased by over 20%.
In the selection and presentation of new material, many sources have been used, including:
• Internet searches;
• The British National Corpus;

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for laying to rest those niggling doubts
Even native speakers of English need a little help sometimes and this book helps settle any questions regarding troublesome prepositions, especially if you work between different languages and sometimes get confused.

4-0 out of 5 stars a must-have book for all English learners
When I first knew of the existence of this book, I wondered: why, there should be such a dictionary in every language! And, yet, how come I didn't even once think of searching for that kind of dictionary in English?? I should have known of it much earlier!

English is my second language, and even though I belong to the cateogry of "advanced" learner, I still have difficulty, for instance, in locating the right preposition or adverb that go with certain verbs or adjectives. For example, the very subtle difference in meaning between "be familiar to vs. be familar with" is a very difficult one for a non-native English speaker like me to grasp. The BBI dictionary of English Word Combinations aims to address problems unique to ESL learners, including the one I just mentioned. Keep it handy, and it will let you command more accurate & "real" English.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for translators
This is an extraordinary tool for translators into English. It is a dictionary of collocations, and provides information that is hard to find in otherdictionaries. It helps you find thatelusive word that goes with another, andanswers many questions about whichpreposition to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars When you forget your prepositions...
The BBI Dictionary of English Word Combinations is useful for the ESL student, but also for professional translators. Translators are often "in the zone," between both the source and target language andforget the simplest phrasal verbs. I've found this book helpful in sweepingup those messy pronouns that betrayed the original source language of mytranslation. Praise to the authors. They would have gotten 5 stars if therewas more emphasis on modern use of the word combinations. The ESL readerstill won't know what it means "to come out" (as in announcing asexual preference or a hidden attribute) by consulting this book. But, Iknow, writing a dictionary is like sweeping the beach!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful Dictionary for International Students
I have studied English as Second Language for a long time. Personally reading is easier than writing because my country's education system emphasizes reading and I didn't have many opportunities to practicewriting. It is always confusing to me to decide what idiom and wordcombination are correct. I took ESL classes for 2 semesters at CommunityCollege in Michigan. At that time, I only depended on LongMan Dictionary. However, while writing my homework, I felt my dictionary was not enough tosupport my poor English skill. In writing class, my instructor recommendedthis dictionary. I bought it. I am using it effectively. If you feelsomething is missing in your dictionary, I strongly recommend thisdictionary for supplement. ... Read more

Product Description
Language and love collide in this inventive novel of a young Chinese woman's journey to the West and her attempts to understand the language, and the man, she adores.Zhuang – or “Z,” to tongue-tied foreigners – has come to London to study English, but finds herself adrift, trapped in a cycle of cultural gaffes and grammatical mishaps. Then she meets an Englishman who changes everything, leading her into a world of self-discovery. She soon realizes that, in the West, “love” does not always mean the same as in China, and that you can learn all the words in the English language and still not understand your lover. And as the novel progresses with steadily improving grammar and vocabulary, Z's evolving voice makes her quest for comprehension all the more poignant. With sparkling wit, Xiaolu Guo has created an utterly original novel about identity and the cultural divide. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers
I didn't like this book. I do appreciate how difficult it is to learn any new language as an adult. However, the main characters were despicable.

2-0 out of 5 stars A dictionary might be more entertaining
This is probably a good example of a book being published that has more to do with who the author is and what sort of books about what country are momentarily hot, as opposed to what the author actually writes. A Chinese young woman goes to London, meets a gay man and has an affair, moves in with him, does a quick trip throughout western Europe, and then and finally goes back to China. She learns to write better English during the year.Yeah, that's about it, with some generally pointless and superficial events and comments on differences in the two societies framed by a structure of defining words at the beginning of each short. Do you believe a reserved Chinese woman would date gay man who has become, because of her evidently, suddenly interested in women? Isn't this one of the fantasies of some narratives, that a woman is so alluring that she turns gay men straight? I also didn't get a strong sense of who these people were except in the most generalized manner. To me the book felt over designed while the writing, well, here's an example of poor thinking or sloppiness that that for me sort of defines the entire book: On page 162 she learns the words 'Impressionist' and "Impressionism and writes, "Longest two words I have ever learned so far" at 13 letters each.Well, actually on page 149, she writes in her journal the word "individualistic," which has 15 letters. I also note here the main character uses a complicated verb form that she is unable to use in other parts of the book.Yeah I'm sure it must be difficult to write about someone learning a language and to keep their learning and word usage consistent, I'll forgive her on that one.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can share, do it!
If you can share, do it! I share this book with my dear friend. She is from China, and she bought this book for me there. Then I bought one for her on Amazon as a gift. So we have two - and share! Try it, western men, maybe we will understand eastern women much better!
This book is d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s!
P.S. - I am not born english reader/ speaker, but it does no matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book am very quickly reading in metro, car, bed. Makes eyes to cry
Why do some "reviewers" feel the need to fill three paragraphs with re-recaps of the story line?

I had the good fortune to find the English version of this book in my local library in Paris France; being a foreigner here, who gets by with my broken French, I felt I would find a connection in this book, and I did.
I thought I had trouble with making cultural adjustments from the States to France; at least we share the same alphabet and have the same types of grammar rules.

Considering the broken English used throughout, it got to be very easy to read after a short while, and I zipped through it in a few days during my commute. We are immediately thrown into Z's world, and by introducing each chapter in the form of a word she's learned, and its dictionary meaning, we are given a preview of things to come.

Spoiler alert below!!!

this book is a tearjerker

4-0 out of 5 stars Easterner Finds One-Sided Love in the West
I really enjoyed this book. I thought the narrator's voice was very interesting. I am a firm believer that language is an expression of culture and it was very interesting to take this young woman's journey of the West through an Easterner's eyes. She was at times hilarious, profoundly wise, and utterly foolish...but aren't we all?

As a westerner who has travelled to the East, it's funny how the mind is processing all of the nuances of culture. I read reviews where other readers didn't particularly enjoy the narrator's broken English. I felt the broken English was such a profound, moving, and real way that many who are thinking and living in a different culture feel. This really was a wonderful book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely lopsided, and missing stress and vowel markings. Not useful for learners of Hebrew
I purchased this dictionary after seeing that it had a more positive rating than any other 2-way Hebrew/English pocket dictionary on Amazon. While I still think it will be of some use to me, there are a lot of issues which make this dictionary rather impractical for those learning Hebrew (and perhaps also for native Hebrew speakers learning English).

The most glaring problem, in my opinion, is the extreme difference in length between the English-to-Hebrew and Hebrew-to-English sections. While the English-to-Hebrew section is 690 pages, the Hebrew-to-English portion is only 284 pages (in other words, a nearly 2.5-fold difference). In addition, the Hebrew-to-English section is almost entirely one-word translations.Nearly all of the phrases that are included are only found on the English-to-Hebrew side.

My second complaint is that, as at least one other reviewer mentioned, there are no vowel markings of any kind in the English-to-Hebrew section, which is really a shame since that's where most of the entries are. There are vowel markers on the Hebrew-to-English side, but as I already mentioned, it's relatively limited compared to the other half of the dictionary. Finally, there are also no markings for stress on any of the Hebrew words anywhere in the dictionary. This makes it difficult to learn proper pronunciation from the dictionary entries alone. If you're going to use this dictionary, you better find yourself a Hebrew-speaking friend that's willing to answer a lot of questions.

As several other reviewers pointed out, this dictionary is clearly written for native Hebrew speakers learning English, and this is evidenced by the fact that it's published in Israel. But even for Israelis and other Hebrew speakers, I think this dictionary has some shortcomings that would inhibit effective learning of English. In particular, it frequently does not include any pronunciation keys for English words. And while it does have a section at the beginning of the book explaining the basics of English pronunciation, this is far less helpful than individualized pronunciation keys. When pronunciation is included, it is usually only partial, and then uses a proprietary English-based system rather than the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) system. Some of the vowel symbols are downright erroneous in my opinion; the schwa, for example, is printed as a Greek delta instead of the standardized schwa symbol. Also, the dearth of Hebrew-to-English words is sure to stymie the efforts of a Hebrew speaker whose English is limited as much as it is an English speaker learning Hebrew.

In its defense, this book is pretty large for a pocket dictionary (almost 1000 pages), but it includes a lot of English words and phrases on the English-to-Hebrew side which are either British colloquial language (no offense intended) or else are simply bad translations. At a minimum, some words definitely differ from standard American spelling. Some words aren't wrong, but they're pretty sophisticated or obscure for a pocket dictionary, and could have been left out in favor of more Hebrew-to-English entries. Here are some examples: bellyland (is that like a bellyflop?), loofa, zombi (no e on the end), question master, road gang, shunter, suable, volte-face, war bride, wangle, snaffle, dead-end kids, decarbonize, chorine, cap-a-pie, capstan, cheval glass, chivy, cutpurse, diarchy, hoarfrost, leg-pull, legatee, puppy fat, quean, reliquary, second childhood, and snow-blindness.I'm sure I could find a lot more but I've belabored the point enough.

I won't say outright that this is a useless book, but be aware of its shortcomings before you buy it.It seems that most Hebrew dictionaries on this site have bad reviews, so this may still be as good a book as you're going to find.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and thorough, but no vowels in English-Hebrew section
This is a nice dictionary of modern Hebrew. It's a two way dictionary between Hebrew and English. It covers a lot of terms, over 82,000 entries total. The only thing that you have to be aware of is that it is intended for Israeli students learning English, not vice versa. Thus the whole introductory section is only in Hebrew -- I would have expected it to be also in English in the English-portion of the dictionary!?Also, Hebrew terms in the English-Hebrew section of the dictionary do not include vowels. They are intended to be studied by Israeli students who know Hebrew and don't need vowels to read it.There is obviously a way around it, but it's a bit of a nuisance.Otherwise, it's a good dictionary and will do nicely helping you read and learn modern Hebrew.

5-0 out of 5 stars I call this dictionary the magic dictionary as I think that it is THE Best hebrew english english hebrew dictionary..
This dictionary is a great product to say the least.I am using this dictionary already over 15 years. The definitions are short, accurate and easy to grasp and use.Beside the fact that it gives bazillion of phrases, slang and idioms which is very helpful, it is also add colloquial words that usually not appear in regular dictionary.

I am calling it the MAGIC DICTIONARY.As even combination of words or the way people talk, which are not idioms or slang, it appears as slang or phrase. This makes the dictionary very unique. For the reader it can be a make-break point on finding the word or phrase fast and apply it right away.

I used it in Israel and using it here in United States on daily basis.I have three of them: One for home (looks a little shabby), second for out and work and third brand new for special occasion.

I tried all the existence different dictionaries in the US and Israel and found it to be incomparable.

I know you won't be disappointed.Just enjoy it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for native Hebrew speakers, not for English speakers
I wish "Bible Prof" had written his review sooner. I agree completely with his review. This dictionary is great for someone who is fluent in Hebrew, but not very useful for someone who knows English and is trying to look up the Hebrew equivalents of English words. I had the same problem with this book as Bible Prof did, which is to say that I couldn't pronounce the Hebrew words because they had no vowels. Once I found the Hebrew word without vowels, I could flip into the Hebrew-to-English portion of the dictionary and look up the Hebrew word WITH its vowels, but this was a very clumsy way to operate.

The book is, however, very thorough with plenty of modern words and idiomatic phrases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Dictionary Designed for the Hebrew Speaker
This is a great volume. Very contemporary, explaining most of the contemporary, as well as the more traditional, Hebrew words and phrases. The only drawback, from my perspective, is that it was clearly designed for the Hebrew speaker wishing to learn English, rather than for the English speaker wishing to learn Hebrew. This is evident by the fact that the English to Hebrew portion is lacking vowel points (not a problem for the Hebrew speaker). Vowel points are present in the Hebrew to English portion, and this is a help. Unfortunately, not every Hebrew expression in the English to Hebrew portion has an exact match in the Hebrew to English portion, so an English speaker might struggle knowing precisely how to pronounce some of the Hebrew words/phrases he encounters in the English to Hebrew section.

Other than this minor complaint, I've found this volume to be excellent. Only one other small gripe: I find my 53 year old eyes needing to use a magnifying glass at times to see the vowel points clearly! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive in 1961 - 50 years out of date.
I bought this dictionary because my collage courses were using words which weren't in my (Webster's) collegiate dictionary - and it has been great for what I bought it for.

It is not nearly up to date.It was published in 1961, and the next edition (W4) is a current project started in 2008 (according to Wikipedia). There are many words which you just won't find in it because they are new or technical. For an "exhaustive" dictionary, this is inexcusable.BTW: You won't find many of those missing words in the Addenda section in the front.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The" Dictionary
This is the premier Dictionary for attorneys because the U.S. Supreme Court has cited this Dictionary more than any other.Plus, it is comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars such a tool!
it helps me to understand some weird words scholars do employ in their articles in the fields of archaeology and egyptology, I'm fond of, before translating them (articles, not scholars) into french .
though I must look elsewhere, for articles are very technical, and numbers of terms don't appear.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Dictionary You'll Ever Need
I own the OED. I own the Random House Unabridged. I own several collegiate dictionaries. I own the Franklin MW collegiate dictionary.

And I owned this dictionary. Then sold it. Why?

Because I thought I could do without it. But I cannot. Why?

Because the W3 is a most singular dictionary. It does not have proper names, so when compared to the Random House Unabridged, it looks scholarly. But it is readable and compact, so when compared to the OED (compact) it is easily read without a magnifying glass.

If you must had ONE dictionary in the house, and are torn between the OED and Random House Unabridged (the only contenders!) then you MUST choose the W3!It has only words (about 450,000) and it, combined with a good thesaurus (Synonym Finder by Rodale, e.g.) are the only 2 volumes you need on your desk, as you compose your treatises, letters, theses with pen and ink.

But if you are at a laptop composing your novel or treatise, I daresay that such a volume might seem unwieldy, in light of online dictionary/ thesaurusesaround.

But if you're like me, you WANT the PAPER! And W3 delivers, as perhaps the only alternative to a volume you might choose to have if you were deserted on an island. That question, in itself, is interesting (" What book would you choose to be stranded withon a desert isle").I'd have to answer the OED. But since that is technically not ONE book, I'd have to say the W3!.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dictionary
This dictionary software is adequate.I do a lot of reading while traveling and I frequently need access to an unabridged dictionary. It works fairly well and I leave it up on my laptop while reading a book.I have found some words where the word itself is used as the definition for that word.To my understanding that is a NO-NO for a dictionary, however, I did not find any competing unabridged dictionary software. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars China's *other* Little Red Book
Carrying around Chairman Mao's Quotations won't get you very far in China these days, but the Concise English-Chinese / Chinese-English Dictionary is a lifesaver for exchange students or really any traveler who plans to spend more than a week in mainland China.

The print is tiny although the contrast is good, and hey, you're young and your eyes can handle it! In all seriousness, this is the size of a pocket dictionary so it has to be small. Pinyin and Simplified Chinese but also includes many equivalent Traditional characters. It provides the resources to translate in both directions (ENG-->CN, CN-->ENG). The radical index at the start of the Chinese-English section is one of the best features. Plenty of compound words and common phrases in context.

I carried this around China and noticed many other long-term foreigners did, too. If you don't already have a copy before you go, you can easily find it in country. Mine cost eight and a half yuan (which was less than two bucks back in the early Nineties).

Published by Oxford University Press (Commercial Press in China); my edition is from 1990. Turtleback (cardboard reinforced) binding makes it sturdy, and the pages have rounded corners which is nice since extensive thumbing would wear them down anyway!

The newest edition appears to have vinyl covers and perhaps even a new editor:
Concise English-Chinese / Chinese-English Dictionary (Third Edition)

5-0 out of 5 stars great dictionary
after reading other reviews: wow, let it go.I suppose its different for me, its supplementary, being Chinese I use it for a quick look up for characters I have forgotten.A good friend of mine who is (not Chinese) learning Chinese is in love with this dictionary and has learned a lot from it.He owns the same edition only in larger print.

Its lightweight and I don't mind the little letters being blessed by good eyesight.I mean, all in all, if you wanted to learn the language, keep in mind, this is just a dictionary and should be used as a tool, not the actual educational reference.

I would personally recommend it based upon the fact that it is both English-Chinese and Chinese-English with a radical section and accurate pinyin. There is also a degree of personal satisfaction, its nothing more or less than what I needed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this!
This was my first Chinese dictionary, but it has been passed over by time. Don't buy this dictionary, if you must buy an Oxford dictionary, go with the much larger and easier on the eyes edition (ISBN 0195911512). Even better yet, buy the ABC Chinese Dictionary (ISBN 082482766X), which allows you to look up by the alphabetized listing of the complete Chinese word in pinyin, not the two-step head character-second character system used on Oxford Concise.

3-0 out of 5 stars good for beginners, but you'll outgrow it
this dictionary is wonderful for the beginner, but will soon be outgrown by the serious student of Chinese. Though the characters are small, a little experience with characters will make it easy. This book is best usedas a second reference used sparingly once you have got intermediatecommunication skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent and a bit -too- "Concise".
When I began learning Chinese, this was the first dictionary I chose.I liked that it was two-way, because after looking up something I like to double check it in the other direction.I also liked that it included bothpinyin and radical look-up, so that I could use it for oral communicationas well as written communication. Finally, I liked that Oxford is atrusted name in English dictionaries.

Unfortunately, I am surprised byjust how often I find this "concise" dictionary too concise.Toclarify, I should mention that my Chinese is only at the beginner tointermediate level. To tease the user, many of the words that are notdefined in the dictionary do show up in the radical index so that you candetermine their pronounciation but not their meaning.

My other peeve isrelated to the way this dictionary handles traditional characters.I knewwhen I bought this dictionary that it was simplified. This was not myfirst choice, but I was satisfied by the fact that it included thetraditional forms as well. However now that I have had a chance to use itI find the handling of the traditional characters to be inconsistent.

Inspite of my complaints, this dictionary remains the best serious, portable,two-way dictionary I have been able to find thus far. This does not meanthat I am satisfied with it...I am still looking for the"right" dictionary for me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good dictionary but lacking...
I am reading thru Kazantzakis's Freedom or Death (Captain Michalis in Greek) and my small Oxford lexicon by Pring lacks a number of words in Kazantzakis's novel. So I bought Stavropoulos's Oxford Greek English Learner's Dictionary to help me out. I am finding that Stavropoulos's dictionary contains many of Kazantzakis's words that are not in Pring's lexicon, but, unfortunately, Stavropoulos also does not include a number of other words Kazantzakis uses in this novel. This is somewhat disappointing since Kazantzakis is a well-known Greek author and one would anticipate that his words would be in a Modern Greek lexicon.

This said, I have found Stavropoulos's lexicon invaluable in most occasions in which I am reading Modern Greek. Although I wish he was more up to date w/ Kazantzakis, I recommend this lexicon for those who need good explanations of Modern Greek word usage.

Finally, Stavropoulos includes parsing and declension tables at the end of his lexicon, and these are very useful for determining the various forms of Greek nouns and verbs. In fact, each entry in his lexicon includes a number that refers to the relevant parsing/declension table. This is a great help for readers of Modern Greek.

5-0 out of 5 stars ya sas
Monumental arbeit!I congratulate Oxford and Mr.Stavropoulus for their work.Almost every Greek word has sample sentences explaining the meaning and the context that I find helpful to build up and boost the language ability.I also extend my gratitude to Amazon.com for timely arrival and the latest edition of the dictionary.

4-0 out of 5 stars one more helpful lexical resource for Modern Greek
Because of the phenomenon of diglossia in Modern Greek, there is probably no dictionary that will be entirely satisfactory for all uses.I bought the Oxford Greek-English Learner's Dictionary to supplement other dictionaries I have in a project to translate some material published by a monastery on Mount Athos. The Learner's Dictionary is nicely priced at only $19.95 and is a huge help with Modern Greek idioms, but it favors the demotic over the katharevousa form of the language to such an extent that it is less useful than some older dictionaries for use in reading older or more conservative texts, because it omits quite a few words or forms of words that are still in general use.If you are going to buy only one Modern Greek-English dictionary for general use, this will probably do the job, but if you buy more than one and balance the Learner's Dictionary with a more conservative dictionary (or dictionaries), you will probably do even better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent dictionary - Good size!
Stavropoulos' dictionaries are the best available for modern demotic Greek, and the product of a truly intimate knowledge of both Greek and English. It is a great shame, therefore, that Oxford University Press has produced the English-Greek volume in a significantly smaller size than its Greek-English companion, which is far more comfortable to use. The result is that the English-Greek edition, hard-bound and at about 900 pages thick, is bulky and awkward to handle, and simply does not stand on the bookshelf as a companion to the Greek-English edition. I sincerely hope, however, that OUP do not seek to rectify the situation by making the Greek-English as uncomfortably small in size as its English-Greek companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by Ken Fassman is misleading.
Please note that this book is clearly titled as being a Greek-English dictionary, which means that you'll only find Greek words translated into English. This allows more Greek words to be listed. If you want a dictionary that works both ways, then you'll need to obtain a Greek-English/English-Greek dictionary, also referred to sometimes as English-Greek-English. There are also English-Greek dictionaries, which only translate English words into Greek...Well, you get the idea.

This particular resource is exactly what it says it is, and it's one of the best. I'm actually purchasing a second copy for a friend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ESL Uses for the Dictionary
As mentioned regarding the review of the English/Korean Dictionary, I teach English as a second language (ESL) to ladies from foreign countries. These dictionaries are a big help to them and to me. I gave each student the dictionary for their native country.

3-0 out of 5 stars dictionary does not have any pin-yin, not useful unless you read chinese
i bought the dictionary, hoping to use it as a reference tool to teach my 4 year old chinese.i am a native speaker myself.it is a good reference, if you can read chinese characters. But since it doesn't have pin-yin, you really can't use the dictionary to learn how to pronounce any of the words.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for lower level students.
I use multiple versions of this book to help my students (mostly beginning and intermediate) enlarge their English vocabulary.I am currently using the Spanish-English, Chinese-English and Korean-English versions.Ibelieve that they are good books, and very useful as supplements to ESLclasses. THE GOOD: 1) The book is organized nicely for teachingbeginning level students. It is organized into 12 units, such as: people, housing and recreation. This makes it easy to find a good vocabulary listfor students to concentrate on.2) The full color illustrations are nice, and make it easy for students to understand the word, even if they areusing the monolingual edition. It is nice for students to try to figureout or learn the word without depending on the written translation.3)Each page has some teaching suggestions at the bottom. While I don'talways use them, they have come in handy for giving my students extrapractice at using the new vocabulary.4) There are some nice indices atthe back of the book. These cover everything from irregular verbs togeography to alphabetical listings of the vocabulary. THE BAD: 1) Whilethere are many good words, there are also a lot of common words missing.Ifind myself using a regular English-language dictionary to explain somewords to my students.2) Some of the translations aren't that great.Mystudents have found errors (or just an outdated word) in both theSpanish-English and Korean-English versions.3) This dictionary really isfor beginning or intermediate users. My advanced students don't reallylike using it, as they already know most of the words in it. OVERALL: TheOxford Picture Dictionaries are great tools when used to supplement a lowerlevel class. But if you are teaching more advanced students, maybe someother language-English dictionary would be better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful for English-speaking students of Chinese
The New Oxford Pciture Dictionary (English/Chinese) is not useful for English-speaking students of Chinese. There is no transliteration for the Chinese characters, which are printed in a very hard-to-read light blueink. This dictionary could be useful to Chinese-speaking students ofEnglish. However, they would need a good knowledge of the Western alphabetand sound system to use it. ... I'm from Puerto Rico and received it just in the last day that they told me that I would received it, What I mean is that it was on the range that they told me and I trust their word.It was in in the exact condition that they told me (new).

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This is a great dictionary because it goes from spanish to english and english to spanish. It also includes common phrases. I paid about twenty dollars for this book. I think it is well worth the money because i am going to minor in spanish if not major and the book is hardcover. I know it will last me a long time and will be of great use to me on my journey of fluency :).

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a winner.
It's amazing to note the new edition of Webster's Spanish-English dictionary sells for only $8.98 - for a hardcover packing some 80,000 entries and 100,000 translations into over 700 pages. It's been revised and expanded for 2006 and provides the latest coverage of current core American English and Latin-American Spanish: whether you're an individual seeking a home desk reference or a library seeking an affordable reference, it's a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Webster's Pocket Dictionary
It's great, so small and light. I can take it anyway.Fast delivery too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect size for a backpack and a youngster!
We bought this dictionary for our son going into 7th grade this coming fall.It was a recommendation from the school...easy enough. The way I see it, if a school approves its use then it must be a viable contender.

The size is perfect, not too heavy and a little shorter in length then a paperback.Fits in an small pocket of the backpack so its always with them when they need it...

5/5.
