Product Description
This handbook assembles a team of experts to review the special problems faced by women with epilepsy. Epilepsy treatments affect fertility and can cause pregnancy complications and birth defects, but most of the available drugs have been tested on men. Moreover, hormone effects on seizures are of particular concern to women at puberty, at menopause, and over the menstrual cycle. Many health-care providers are not informed about the unique issues facing women with epilepsy. This book, published in association with the Epilepsy Foundation of America, fills that gap and provides women with epilepsy with the information they need to be effective self-advocates. ... Product Description
It is well recognized that there is an intimate and reciprocal interaction between epilepsy and sleep. The book, Epilepsy and Sleep is a ground-breaking, comprehensive source for exploring this correlation and is especially timely because of the considerable growth in the understanding of the physiology underlying both sleep and epilepsy. An insightful reference, it presents many of the complex physiologic mechanisms underlying epilepsy--sleep interaction and highlights sleeping disorder symptoms that may be related to epilepsy.
The annual cost of treating epilepsy in the United States is an estimated $12.5 billion, according to a report issued January 2000 by The Epilepsy Foundation. The Foundation also reports that more than 180,000 Americans develop epilepsy each year. However, thousands more cases may be misdiagnosed as sleeping disorders, causing these figures to jump significantly. This correlation and diagnosis can help determine the correct type of medication to administer to regulate the symptoms, in turn saving hundreds of hours of lost time at work and millions of dollars.

Key Features
* Provides the first comprehensive source of information available on the correlation between epilepsy and sleep
* Outlines sleeping disorder symptoms which may in fact be caused by epilepsy
* Well illustrated, easy-to-read text
* An essential text for epileptologists, psychiatrists, physicians, and sleep disorder therapists
* Written by internationally recognized experts in the field ... Read more

Though this is a medical book, I do understand the importance of sleep in relation to seizures.Dr. Dinner, my neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, wrote a very important book on the relationship between sleep and epilepsy. Those of us with epilepsy have to understnad the importance of getting enough sleep so as to not trigger a seizure.I would recomment this book for medical students. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great information
This book really helped with alot of information and practical advice to better understand the condition and options with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
When dealing with a disorder like epilepsy in which the only way doctors treat it is with medications or even surgery, it is helpful to find alternative solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the quick read
Excellent chapters on music and self esteem.Quality, quantity of references leaves some credibility to be desired.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pamphlet length introduction to epilepsy
I recommend this book as a place to get started in learning about epilepsy. Although it is not very scientific, there are no outlandish claims. It presents a realistic picture of epilepsy and a reasonable approach to dealing with it.

On page 9 the author states that she believes that a combination of methods (neuro-feedback, positive thinking, increasing self esteem, yoga, correct nutrition, stress management, spirituality, music and regular exercise) helped her overcome her seizures.

The details are spelled out in chapters 2-9. Chapter 10 is a nice outline summary of her thoughts. It can serve nicely as a guide for people searching for ways to better deal with their epilepsy.

The comments about traditional medical treatment are honest and respectful. The chapter on medication and side effects is unfortunately quite out of date considering that the book is copyright 2004. In fact, none of the newer and very popular medications (felbamate, gabapentin, lamotrigine, oxcarbazepine, tiagabine, topiramate and zonisamide) are even mentioned. In spite of that glaring omission, I recommend it as a great place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone with epilepsy or has a family member with it
Epilepsy is a condition that must be managed lest it be a true problem. With much advice discussing how diet, surgery, therapy, and more can affect one's epilepsy, "Epilepsy 199 Answers" is a must for anyone with epilepsy or has a family member with it, and wants to be armed with knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
I highly recommend this book if you or your family is dealing with epilepsy. It answers almost all of the questions you have and some you haven't even thought of yet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother if you're above a fourth-grade reading level.
Not recommended. The information given is ridiculously basic, and can be provided in a single chapter of Seized by Eve LaPlante or Partial Seizure Disorders by Mitzi Waltz, both highly superior and actually informative books. I can't figure out if Wilner's condescending by nature, or if he's just overcompensating for the anticipated lowest common denominator.

I'll give it two stars instead of one simply because someone out there may genuinely not know things this basic - but if you've been diagnosed with epilepsy, your doctor probably told you more about your disorder in the first five minutes of the appointment than you'll get in this entire book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for The Basics
Readers will find this book to be very helpful, as it spells out in very simplistic terms the answers to the questions that they may or may not have thought of yet (definitions, clarifications, listings of medicines). It is a quick read as it is broken down into questions with the corresponding answers. This is a great resource for obtaining the basics on epilepsy, especially for a newly diagnosed patient. It also contains contact information for national organizations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for my daughter
This was an excellent book for my 7 year old daughter, I lent it to her Grade 2 teacher to read to the class which gave the kids a better understanding of what she goes through on a day to day basis, it was also very comforting for me to know that there are books out there made for young children, she was able to read it herself and understand that she is not alone. Brilliant!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Great book, bought it used but sure couldn't tell! The language was very understandable for my daughters classmates.I feel it has helped the other children "accept" my daughters disability a little better, however,I wish it had talked about wearing a helmet though. That is always an issue for us, be it with adults or children.

5-0 out of 5 stars "It's about me!"
We bought this book for our 2 yr old & her cousins & future playmates. When we read it to her the first time, she was completely absorbed; more so than with any book we've read her to date, and she's already a bookworm. She wanted it read twice more. She calls it the "essilessy" book & knows its about another kid who has seizures.Even if she has no idea what the rest of the information in the book means, she knows that the girl in the story has seizures, too. This book very obviously means something to her, even at such a young age, so it is well worth whatever we paid for it.I would replace it again and again at any cost for the value it has to my daughter.

I recommend it for use at home or with any group up through the elementary, maybe middle school, years that a child with epilepsy belongs to.Even just for use for parents to get an idea how to explain epilepsy and living with it to others using simple language and explanations. This children's book is an excellent addition to a family's epilepsy resource library.

3-0 out of 5 stars taking seizure disorders to school
I think the price was too high for the information that the book offered. It was a short book for $9.95 plus shipping, so I feel like I didn't get my money's worth.I bought the book to share with my daughters classmates at school & felt it was made for younger children, maybe 1st or 2nd grade students. My daughter has a seizure disorder & is in 3rd grade.Hope this helps

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking Seiqzure Disorders to School

5-0 out of 5 stars Purchased as another Collectible in Epilepsy / Neuroscience
This book is profoundly defined and detailed to the core in all aspect in Epilepsy Cases. A Must Have, especially for those who are in Neuroscience, Neurology, and Psychiatry, including Neuropsychiatry and Neuropsychology.

I purchased this book, as this one was a collectible book (dated) and not
a latest revision. As with all of these Clinical Study Books; they are elaborately
well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read Cutting Edge Scientific Thinking About Epilepsy
I am a physician with a personal interest in epilepsy. (I am neither a primary care provider nor a neurologist)

There is much new thinking about epilepsy and many new treatment options available. This book nicely lays out much of that material. Neurologists as well as primary care providers will find this book useful. For primary care providers that treat epilepsy, it will be useful to be aware of the latest thinking. This will benefit their patients in getting them to the best treatment options sooner. For neurologists that read this book, they will come away with a more systematic way of thinking about the scientific basis of epilepsy. Most of the material is likely too specialized for the lay public to get much out of it but there may be exceptions. Those with some technical or health care background and education and a strong personal interest may find some chapters intriguing.

I found the following chapters to be particularly useful and helpful for me:
1) Chapter 2 (receptors and pathophysiology)
2) Chapter 4 (genetics of epilepsy, mutations in ion (sodium, etc) channel components)
3) Chapter 5 "Targets of Antiepileptic Drugs" is particularly brilliant in its explication of how understanding drug mechanism of action at specific targets can help a physician to make an educated choice regarding the potentially best anticonvulsant for a particular patient
4) Chapters 8 and 9 contain a marvelous explanation of interactions of various anticonvulsants and theoretical approaches to minimizing toxicity and idiosyncratic reactions. These may be the most useful chapters in the entire book.
5) Chapter 14 gives a lucid description of the Ketogenic Diet and some of the effects of diet in general on epilepsy
6) Chapters 17 and 18 deal with neurosteroids and neuroendocrine issues including catemenial epilepsy and the effects of stress on seizures
7) Chapter 19 on "sleep and epilepsy" is interesting
8) Chapter 20 on psychopathology in epilepsy I also found fascinating
9) The final chapter on "Arresting Epileptogenesis" was a nice way to point the reader's attention to possible future therapy modalities

I intend to read all of the above mentioned chapters at least a second time.

The other chapters which I have not specifically mentioned above are also very good, including outstanding descriptions of various imaging and diagnostic procedures, surgical options, special treatments, vagal nerve stimulators, and even experimental modes that are not yet ready for clinical application.

For the money, this book is an outstanding bargain. In fact I bought a second copy and donated it to my institution's medical library. Few medical texts are worth reading cover to cover. This book is truly an exception. Most of the chapters held my interest to the last word. In fact, I was "snarfing" up the information just like a hungry puppy dog eats its food.

I highly recommend it for any physician who wants to understand current thinking regarding scientific theory underlying the modern treatment of epilepsy. It increased my level of understanding by at least an order of magnitude.

5-0 out of 5 stars FROM ONE OF THE AUTHORS AND CO-EDITOR
The co-editors of this medical textbook, Drs. Rho (UC-Irvine), Sankar (UCLA) and myself (UTHSCSA) are among the few clinician-scientists in the field of epilepsy. The textbook aims to bridge the gap between scientific developments in research laboratory (bench) with the insights obtained at the bedside caring for thousands of patients with epilepsy. The textbook is unique in many aspects, including: 1) the selection of contributing authors, who are young investigators or at mid-career, and 2) the provocative nature of their discussion.Authors were asked to describe the scientific foundation of their area of expertise, but also to provide educated insights about potential future developments. The book is divided in six sections: I) Scientific Foundations (3 chapters), II)Antiepileptic Drugs (5 chapters), III) Epilepsy Surgery (3 chapters), IV) Alternative Therapies (5 chapters), V) Other Modulators of the Epileptic State (3 chapters), and VI) The Future of Epilepsy Therapy (5 chapters).Advances in epilepsy have come from many fields in anatomy, biophysics, genetics, molecular biology, neuroscience, pharmacology, etc.We are hoping that this book will educate physicians, health care providers, and investigators increasing their Scientific Foundations to improve Clinical Practice in Epilepsy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for people with Epilepsy
About seven years ago, I was operated of a benign, very large brain tumor, a Meningioma. That was a life changing event, and it changed me completely from the way I used to be in every aspect of my life. Fortunately, even with some limitations, in time I was able to go back to my normal life and my work activity.

Just over 20 months ago, on my way to work, I was t-boned by a driver who was too impatient at a traffic light waiting to change. He hit me just before the door, and the impact sent my car to a ditch. The car was totaled, but with the impact, I re-injured the part of my brain where I was operated a few years back. That caused me a stroke, with the end result of an instant paralysis of the right side of my body and the lost of my speech. With time and therapy I recovered my speech and my mobility, but not my coordination.

About 3 months after my accident, I started having frequent Grad Mal seizures, which until recently happened on average once every 4 weeks. I have tried several drugs, some of them with little impact, but with awful side effects.

When it was determined that the "drug-only" solution was not working, I received a VNS.I had high hopes, but I also experienced some additional problems, with an impact with my quality of life.

I hope that the VNS alternative will work, but I am already discussing with my neurologist and neurosurgeon about the possibility of another brain surgery, if my quality of life keep getting worse.

Leanne Chilton in her book captures quite well that "something" that cannot be described when we have to go through so many unexpected things, and w have to overcome so many obstacles. When she talks about the fact that she was home-bound at times, it hit home. When she talked about the operation that she had before she got better, she talks quite clear about all her concerns, and all the pains she had to endure. If I decide to go for the next surgery, I know it will be a difficult one, but I will be better prepared.

I did not expect to get a tutorial or a technical book in "Seizure Free", and I am glad I did not get that. She was a fighter during her battles with leukemia, and she is a remarkable woman.Wonderful Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Informative
Chilton writes a highly informative and helpful book on brain surgery for the correction of epileptic seizures. It givesmedical information that I, as a brain surgery survivor for epilepsy also, did not have before reading the book.I found this book highly helpful and recommend it to any approaching an opportunity for surgery. --- author, Stephanie S. Sawyer,FACING ME, Breaking the Bonds of Seizure Confinement

5-0 out of 5 stars An Astonishing View From The Inside
Leanne Chilton's victory is revealed through an emotional journey of chilling, revealing passages into a world many have never understood. It is true that this is must-have information for those suffering seizure disorders. But it is equally true that it speaks of the silent acts of valor that go unseen for their grace and determination.Seizure disorders needn't have touched one's life to draw strength and inspiration from this remarkable work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational, You can't put this book down!
I loved Seizure Free from page one until the end. Ms. Chilton takes you on a journey through her experiences with having seizures and through her success with brain surgery. I recommend this book for anyone looking for hope. This book will definitely give you Hope! My family loved it, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Choice for All
This book is an amazing first person account of one woman's journey, but it is much more than that. Ms. Chilton offers all of us an example of the kind of heart and spirit that it takes to overcome adversity and to triumph over it. I read it cover to cover in one day, unable to put it down. Once completing the book, I was left with a feeling of warmth and joy. It was as if I had come through the journey with Ms. Chilton myself. This is a MUST read for anyone dealing with this themselves. But it is also very entertaining, enlightening, enriching and inspirational. I would be remise if I didn't also mention how thorough, well organized and wonderfully written this book is. Ms. Chilton is obviously one amazing woman. It took a great deal of courage and caring for her to offer herself to help others in this way. I hope there is more to come, I would love to read a follow up. ... Read more

Product Description

Epilepsy is a prevalent condition affecting approximately 1% of the general population. Its behavioral effects on cognition and memory can be as debilitating as the physical aspects caused by ongoing seizures. This book is intended primarily for clinical neuropsychologists who encounter patients with epilepsy, either through employment in academic medical centers or in general practice. The book is of particular value to those working in a comprehensive epilepsy center, as the volume provides extensive coverage of the many clinical procedures performed in that setting. Procedures reviewed in this volume include neuropsychological testing, the Wada procedures, and brain mapping. Chapters include descriptions of the purpose of these procedures, reviews of the recent literature, clinical vignettes, in addition to concrete recommendations on how to actually conduct the procedures. Many chapters provide examples of test forms and stimuli useful for conducting some of the procedures reviewed in this book. Neurologists and pediatricians will also find this book to be helpful, as many medical practitioners consider the activities of clinical neuropsychologists working in their settings to be somewhat mysterious. This book makes the details of neuropsychological practice in an epilepsy setting more accessible than what has been present in prior literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perspective of a patient and student
As a patient and student, I found this book very useful in understanding the physiology and treatment of my disease. I found the book to be generally accessible. However, this book is not for the layperson and generally requires a basic background in nervous system and neuron physiological terms which is not included. The textbook is structured as a summary reference. Specific points in the study of epilepsy are discussed with summaries of relevant current and past research. Each topic is covered with a high degree of specificity and depth. I read this series to understand the principle cellular and anatomical elements in epilepsy, the genetics of epilepsy, and mechanisms of drugs which are used to treat epilepsy. As one with generalized epilepsy, I focused on the parts of the book which were relevant to my particular condition. I realize this perspective doesn't show the whole of the book, but the depth of the text and the vast number of topics covered can hardly be conveyed by a general review.
For example, within the volume appear detailed analyses of historical views, demographics, and neural foundations of epileptic disorders. In neuronal foundation of various epileptic disorders, the text begins with an overview of cellular mechanisms and then moves into specific sections within the brain which were critical to generating epileptic seizures.

I found two areas of particular interest: the discussion of ion channels (particularly calcium channels) and the structure of the thalamus. These areas were of critical interest to me as they play a critical role in the genesis of generalized epileptic seizures and the medications controlling them.

Ion Channels:
An incredible depth in explaining the role of potassium, calcium, and sodium voltage-gated protein channels have in generating fits and the relationship these channels have to current and future anti-epileptic medication. The information here is several primary sections: the role of channels in the "burster" cells, the synchronization of neuronal firing patterns, and control of neurotransmitter release. The explanation of the role of calcium channels in particular interested me, as medications that treat my condition have been shown to effect calcium currents (for example by blocking T-type calcium currents). Within each section are general overviews of the structure, functional properties, and overall role of the ion channels. The text then discusses the role of each ion channel type in the integration and propagation of signals. Flow charts, activity plots from specific experiments (effects on membrane potential for example) and basic diagrams are included to explain concepts when needed. Some imported graphs from cited experiments I found to be difficult to interpret, and several flowcharts illustrated the complexity of the system but were nonetheless difficult to analyze. I found overall, however, that the text and images correlated well and provided enhanced understanding of the complex elements introduced in the text.

Brain Structures:
For a typical chapter in this section, the text develops the initial discussion of cellular elements, discussing larger structures and their role in seizures. The structure most critical to me was the thalamus. The text begins with a basic history of the study of the thalamus in relation to epilepsy, noting that in early studies, simultaneous discharge in large areas of the neocortex gave rise to the hypothesis that the thalamus and surrounding structures formed a sort of "centrencephalic pacemaker" which synchronized and drove these rhythms.
Following this basic introduction, structural anatomy of the associated brain region is introduced. For the thalamus, three structures within this body were discussed concerning their ability to regulate low-frequency rhythms: the thalamic relay nuclei, the surrounding GABAergic thalamic reticular nucleus, and the neocortex.
The connections between the brain region and surrounding structures are discussed in detail and specific characteristics of the tissues present are explored, referring cellular elements previously discussed. For the thalamus, neurons in nearly all of the three identified areas are characterized by a high amplitude, low threshold calcium spike which has been shown to play a critical role in regulating low frequency rhythms.
The text then analyzes the indicators and elements of the disorder in relation to the structure and properties of cells and brain region. In the thalamus, one area noted was the 3-4Hz spike wave activity which characterizes generalized absence epilepsy. The text analyzes the relationship between triggers (such as sleep deprivation and rapid sleep-waking state transition) and their associated responses (ictogenesis) with respect to the normal functioning of the structure (the generation of sleep spindles). Included in this section is a discussion of the generation of animal models to study these phenomena.
These structural elements and associated cellular characteristics are integrated to isolate the key structures involved in seizure generation. The lateral sensory relay nuclei, the midline thalamic nuclei (both of which control spike wave discharge generation), and the anterior and mediodorsal thalamic nuclei (which may be involved in convulsions) are all explained in detail.
Control of these elements is then discussed. For generalized epilepsy, I found it interesting that many drugs, such as ethosuximide, which have little effect on other forms of epilepsy show efficacy in generalized absence because they block the T-type calcium currents critical to this type of epilepsy.

Included in every section are references from current and past literature forming a clear picture of the current state of knowledge for each topic. Limitations of the text's knowledge are conveyed positively as each topic contain the present theories and future directions of research derived from them. Many of the chapters of the book discussing particular phenomena reference several other prior discussions providing an efficient logical progression from one topic to the next (as seen in the discussion of the chapters above).

Overall, I would highly recommend this text to anyone with an interest in studying epileptic disorders. The detail and structure of the book fit its function. It is not easily accessible, but is worth the time and effort in reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for epileptologists, scientists or cliniicians
There are so many aspects of modern epilepsy research and clinical practice that make a summary virtually impossible. Attempts have been made in the past and several excellent books are available. What is remarkable in this new text is the breadth of knowledge that was assembled, the superb and provocative writing of true experts in the field and the electronic version that allows for easy search strategies. The book is divided in three main volumes subdivided in chapters further split in sections. More than a compendium, this is an encyclopedia of current and past knowledge, with practical clinical examples, critical description of diagnostic criteria, summary of basic mechanisms, and illustrations either ad hoc or borrowed from previous work.
The book as a whole reads well, the chapters are clearly organized so that one does not need to read every word to learn the message. One minor point that may be addressed in reruns (especially in online versions) is the lack of color in many figures. For example, the chapter on field potentials provides "historic" depiction of seminal experiments that are hard to understand in a grey scale format. Along the same lines, the book would greatly benefit from more illustrative neuropathology, and the MRI reproductions lack sometimes in quality.
The editors have to be complimented for a major effort that will help those in the field understand what's hot and what's not in current understanding of this multifactorial disease. The novice will be fascinated by the depth of this textbook, and the non-epileptologist will find a unique source of searchable information. Cross references to diseases associated with seizure disorders, including psychiatric co-morbidities, make this a must for everyone looking for up to date knowledge in human neurological diseases associated with abnormal cortical and sub-cortical function.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook -error on P230
This is an excellent and concise handbook. However there is an error (probably a typo) on P230. There is a division sign where there should be amultiplication sign. The correct formula should read:

Loading dose (mg/kg)= desired concentration (mg/L) X Volume of distribution (L/kg)

The examples that are given in the text are calculated correctly using the above formula, which indicates that it was a typo error.

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful for general neurologist
As a general neurologist frequently facing cases of epilepsy, it's very helpful to me covering all important aspects of epilepsy treatment and how to handle most problems epileptic patients face

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of the publishing, not of the content
The content of this book seems excellent, but I am quite dissapointed with the actual book. The binding is poor. I was reading the book for less than 15 minutes before one of the pages fell out. Moreover, the printing is poor. The book features lots of images, mostly MRI. The priniting is of such low quality that these can hardly be seen. They are too dark and appear as black blotches. ... Product Description
This edited reference addresses controversial clinical issues of the psychiatric aspects of epilepsy. The book explores the reasons behind the poor communication between psychiatrists and neurologists and suggests potential remedies to this important problem, and two chapters are devoted to examining whether psychiatrists and neurologists are properly trained to recognize and treat conditions that both disciplines commonly encounter in clinical practice.Identification of the causes behind the high rate of comorbidity between epilepsy and mood, anxiety, psychotic and attention deficit disorders is given high priority in the volume, and a specific review of the evidence of common pathogenic mechanisms that may be operant in epilepsy and these psychiatric disorders is included. Recently identified bidirectional relationship between mood disorders and epilepsy and its implication in the course and response to treatment of the seizure disorder are also explored.Several chapters are devoted to rectify common misunderstandings of the use of psychotropic drugs in patients with epilepsy, including the use of antidepressant and central nervous system stimulants. Finally, one chapter explores the possibility of organic causes of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures.

*Compiles into one source the important controversial issues of the psychiatric aspects of epilepsy which have significant implications in clinical practice
