Product Description
This book is a voyage into the thick of unfinished debates and dialogues among frontline activists over how to unify and transform their societies in the direction of greater economic, social, and political equality at a time when the political tide in much of the world seems to be moving in the opposite direction. Connell looks at the programs and animating visions of four revolutionary movements and asks what they have learned from their own and others’ experiences since the end of the Cold War and how their thinking has evolved (or not) to achieve their objectives. His central theme is: what works and what doesn’t in making of social and political revolution?

Drawing from the successes and failures of the movements of all four countries, he argues that democracy, both in terms of the character of society itself and within the political movements that propose to transform it, is as central to the success of a post-Cold War revolutionary project as justice.

But what do we mean by democracy? Is it reducible to a new set of recipes? Is it an identifiable rite of passage through which a nation passes—a gateway to a higher stage of development? Or is it, like nation-building, a process that ebbs and flows unevenly and at times erratically, dependent upon often unpredictable internal and external factors? What are its economic and social components as well as its various political forms? To what degree is it shaped by particular socio-economic, historic and cultural context? How much is popular participation essential to the practice of democracy, and how can it be fostered in a non-manipulative manner while yet retaining its substance? These are some of the questions that drive the exchanges running through this book.

Rethinking Revolution offers a window into some of the most creative thinking on how to work for popular democracy and social justice in the post-Cold War era—and what democracy and social justice mean today. ... Read more

Product Description
When the government ofMengistu Hailemariam was overthrown and replaced by a new government headed by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in 1991, Eritreans had hoped that there was finally a government in Ethiopia that had foresworn hegemonic ambitions towards Eritrea. The war (1998-2001) shattered this illusion. Eritreans had also hoped that with the conclusion of the war of independence and a presumably friendly new government in Ethiopia, Eritrea would focus on rebuilding political, social, and economic institutions. The war derailed such hopes.

By carefully documenting the events of the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the author unravels the complexity of the dispute and places it in the context of both a regional and international political dynamic. ... Read more

Product Description
Red Sea Peril records in extraordinary detail the dramatic events of an episode which grabbed headlines across the world. Written from a highly personal perspective, Red Sea Peril is a compelling tale for all who go to sea in foreign waters.

On March 19, 1996, exactly on the thirteenth anniversary of their departure from St. Katharine's Dock, London, to sail around the world, Peter and Shirley Billing were taken at gunpoint from their yacht in the Red Sea. Fortunately they were keeping a regular radio schedule with other voyagers so their disappearance from the radio waves was immediately noticed.

Accused of spying, the Billings protested their innocence at every turn, yet it was the efforts made on their behalf by fellow sailors, friends and relatives in England, press coverage and eventual assistance from British authorities that achieved their release.

It was a month before they were eventually returned to their yacht and continued their circumnavigation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Red Sea Peril - an eye opener!
Having spent my life at sea on Tugs, Ships, Barges & every type of pleasure craft I can get hold of, I have been traveling the world in sweet innocence! To read about such an obviously honest & gentle couple, who would do anything to help anyone they met, who might like help, taken prisoner in this way, seems incredible. I am so glad they were able to gain their freedom & let us read about their ordeal & their friends, relatives & captors. A gripping read, that shows a couple that are so definitely made for one another. Therefore a read with everything:- Travel, Drama, Adventure, Gentleness, Love, Compassion......... What else can a good book have! I LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE!

5-0 out of 5 stars A tale for sailors
I have really enjoyed reading Red Sea Peril.I found I could imagine Shirley and Peter, so different, and so complementary at the same time.
I liked the style, the sentences are short, precise, with just enough humor. In fact it was very pleasant to read.
The chapters are just long enough and the flashbacks permitted the reader to set the situation of a sailor's life and the choices you have to make. BUT I would like to have followed with small charts at the beginning of each chapter (what my own editor has asked me to do) with points where you were and where you go. Sailors like to see this.
However, I appreciated very much all the photographs, very well situated.I like very much too the "introspectives" and would have liked even more of them.I enjoyed too the poetry, it rings so "true" and I felt that very much.Even in drama I was aware of Shirley's "joie to vivre".
Finally you hae given me a taste and I wish to read more of your adventures because this book merits it. Ihope to read the next book soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Reading
At 190 pages this book is short but incredibly dense. It is not light reading, but it is informative. The authors take the time to show the voluminous statements that various parties issued and then analyze them. The long and twisted histories behind Eritrea and Ethiopia are given here, providing a much-needed build-up to a misunderstood, little-known but ruinous war. Here is a hint and a fact: the war was NOT about the border between these two countries nor the nearly useless Badme Plain that straddles a part of that border.
The authors don't take sides in presenting the two belligerents' positions, and indeed it would be hard to. The two govts, the govts of two under-developed and starving states drained from thirty years of continuous war, proved themselves to be more interested in beating each others' brains out than in ending the conflict. It is tragically ironic to see how the two countries switch their positions entirely as the military situation on the ground changed, and it is revolting how international organizations like the OAU and UN (the EU never even attempted to feign interest)wrung their hands but did little else while two p--s-poor countries slaughtered each other with frontal assaults on useless desert scrublands.
This is not a general or military history, more of a diplomatic one. It mainly covers the negotiations and accusations that both sides threw into the mix to either try stopping the war or to re-start it.
One big issue: the maps are pretty awful. Maps should feature every city, village or geographical feature that is mentioned in the text. Stating that the Ethiopians seized Barentu, Eritrea without displaying it on the two or three pitiful maps does little service to the reader.
This isn't light reading, but it is good for the seriously interested.

4-0 out of 5 stars Refugees waiting to go home.
As a member of a friendship group working with a friendship link between Trondheim in Norway and Keren in Eritrea I have been interested in Eritrea and its people for a long time. I have been to Eritrea several times, and have also met some of the refugees, both refugees still in other countries and refugees that have returned home.

Gaim Kibreab is an Eritrean which has worked for the country and for Eastern Africa from abroad for many years. And he has a great knowledge on the country and the problems caused by the long conflict with Ethiopia.

Ready and Willing...but still Waiting, is the first in the Life & Peace Institute's new Horn of Africa Research Reports.

The book is meant for people with special interest in the area and the topic. When the report was written still nearly 400 000 Eritrean refugees were living in Sudan, willing to go back to Eritrea. The report tries to explain why they still are waiting to go home.

Today the situation is different. Refugees are returning home, and Eritrea is doing its best to greet them welcome. This is not easyin a poor country, where the resourses are few, especially the problem of finding enough water for all, is a main task. Still Kibreab's book gives very good background information, and a very intereting read for anybody interested in the topic.
