Excerpt: Nahuatl (Nahuatl pronunciation: , with stress on the first syllable) is a group of related languages and dialects of the Nahuan (traditionally called "Aztecan") branch of the Uto-Aztecan language family. Collectively they are spoken by an estimated Nahua people, most of whom live in Central Mexico. All Nahuan languages are indigenous to Mesoamerica. The Classical Nahuatl word (noun stem nhua, + absolutive -tl ) is thought to mean "a good, clear sound" This language name has several spellings, among them Náhuatl (the standard spelling in the Spanish language), Naoatl, Nauatl, Nahuatl, Nawatl. In a back formation from the name of the language, the ethnic group of Nahuatl speakers are called Nahua. Nahuatl has been spoken in Central Mexico since at least the 7th century AD. It was the language of the Aztecs, who dominated what is now central Mexico during the Late Postclassic period of Mesoamerican chronology. During the preceding century and a half, the expansion and influence of the Aztec Empire had led to the variety spoken by the residents of Tenochtitlan becoming a prestige language in Mesoamerica. With the introduction of the Latin alphabet, Nahuatl also became a literary language and many chronicles, grammars, works of poetry, ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21889 ... Read more

Product Description
Esperanto is a constructed auxiliary language. A highly regular grammar makes Esperanto much easier to learn than most other languages of the world, though particular features may be more or less advantageous or difficult depending on the language background of the speaker. Parts of speech are immediately obvious, for example: ?he suffix -o indicates a noun, -a an adjective, -as a present-tense verb, and so on for other grammatical functions. An extensive system of affixes may be freely combined with roots to generate vocabulary; and the rules of word formation are straightforward, allowing speakers to communicate with a much smaller root vocabulary than in most other languages. It is possible to communicate effectively with a vocabulary built upon 400 to 500 roots, though there are numerous specialized vocabularies for sciences, professions, and other activities. Reference grammars of the language include the Plena Analiza Gramatiko (Complete Analytical Grammar) by Kálmán Kalocsay and Gaston Waringhien, and the Plena Manlibro de Esperanta Gramatiko (Complete Handbook of Esperanto Grammar) by Bertilo Wennergren. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bonega, ghuinda lernolibro pro iu ajn
That means "really good, enjoyable textbook for anybody at all."

I giggled and guffawed my way through this witty book. If you haven't learned Esperanto yet, take a day or two off and get the basics under your belt. Then make this book your own and have a blast.

While the "Interlingvo" can be used as a very utilitarian means of linguistically getting by, it is also an astonishing vehicle for poetry, rhetoric, and flamboyant chit-chat. Jordan's book is a hoot, and a darn well-grounded hoot at that. It will polish your style in short order. In all of my experience, this is undoubtedly the most playful, joyful language book I've found.

I taught myself Esperanto at fifteen, while bored to tears in high school. Years later, I have chosen to cultivate my knowledge seriously. At the moment, I have the pleasure of regular 'babilado' with my upstairs neighbor, who coincidentally is also fluent. We've shared several 'ridetoj' (chuckles) over Jordan's book.

I highly recommend learning the Green Language, and using this book to punch up your confidence, vocabulary, and above all FREEDOM with one of mankind's most ingenious inventions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for those who want to attain real fluency!
With dozens of excellent examples, leavened by the author's trademarksense of humor, this work provides an excellent guide to real-lifepractical use of the language (my daughter is especially fond of using"Danko ne necesas; vi ricevos mian fakturon" instead of theeveryday "Ne dankinde" ;-) ). Jordan is an anthropologist(specializing in Chinese studies, I believe) and this background showsitself in his concern that the student understand from the start thatEsperanto is not simply an artificial language, but a "speechcommunity". During the time I was a tutor in the e-mail Esperantocourse for English-speaking beginners, I found myself turning again andagain to this volume for just the right way to explain to intelligent, curious students why we say it _this_ way and not _that_ way... or whythere sometimes _is_ no one answer to usage questions. Its one lack is adetailed cross-index... but even without it, because of the detailed tableof contents, it's an immensely useful book.Definitely belongs on theshelf with Wells' bilingual dictionary and Auld's "Pasxoj al PlenaPosedo".

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-organized and thorough.
This is a wonderful, and up-to-date advanced textbook for English speakers to gain fluency in the international language, Esperanto. While it covers a wide variety of topics, it focuses special attention on those words and grammatical issues that present particular problems for English speakers learning Esperanto. This is a fine addition to any English-speaking Esperantist's library. ... "Esperanto is the auxiliary language created by a Polish oculist, Dr. L. L. Zamanhof (1859-1917), and first published in 1887 ... His contention was, that we must _first_ find some solution to the "language problem". Not until we have settled this comparatively minor matter can we begin to understand each other across the frontiers and then to discuss the grave social and economic problems which face us. 2-0 out of 5 stars Beginners' Esperanto by J.F.Conroy
Even though the author may be well versed in this language he is too technical with grammar in the beginning. Reader gets overwhelmed with all the points of grammar. Way too much to absorb at the start. Seems like he wants to IMPRESS the reader
with his knowledge instead of presenting the material in an easy as possible way to absorb it, put it to practical use. He makes my head "swim" in trying to put it all together "right off the bat".Also the word lists are "disjointed". Got to flip back
and forth too much to find them, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best 2nd book on Esperanto to get!
This is the best 2nd book on Esperanto to get! The first book should be David Richardson's or the "Teach Yourself Esperanto" one. Conroy's book should be the 2nd one to get because it's more thorough. There are tons of vocabulary lists, readings and exercises in this one, not to mention a complete treatment of the grammar. Whereas you could complete a basic book on Esperanto in a few weeks, this one will take you at least a few months to work through. For someone who wants to learn the language quickly so they can correspond with other Esperantists worldwide, the pace in this book wouldn't be acceptable. Esperanto IS an easy language to learn, but Conroy's book will take you to the next level and then some!

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, pretty good, but two criticisms
Overall, this book provides lots of great exercises and a lot of information about the Esperanto movement itself. My only criticisms are: (1) The format of the book is a little difficult to read (the publishersuse almost no white space to separate one exercise from another, soeverything just runs together. This gives it the appearance of not beingwell organized and certainly not easy on the eyes), and (2) The Englishtranslations of the Esperanto texts are word-for-word.This was probablydone intentionally, to give the student a literal translation ofEsperanto's word-building rules, but it can also make the translations seemstilted and unnatural. However, if you can overlook the less than idealtextual formatting of the book (the publisher's fault, not the author's!)and don't mind literal, word-for-word translations, then you'll certainlybenefit from the lessons, readings and detailed information (includingaddresses) of various organizations in the Esperanto movement.

5-0 out of 5 stars As observedusedby the author in a university class.
This book was effectively used in an Esperanto Workshop (credit available)at University of Hartford,CT, a very few years ago. The author was obviously a talented teacher, and his experience at teaching shows inthe book.It may not beideal for the absolute beginner self teaching, but it is not easy to fault. The references and examples interspersed addgreatly to understanding the language, its purpose, and its functions. Asa college professor emeritus (University Of Connecticut)I have read thisbook and seen it "in action"although I have not directly usedit in my limited teaching of Esperanto. I truly like Conroy's book.(I'vebeen familiar with the language for many years, and have used it a fewtimes outide the United States. )

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable reading for current or potential Esperanto students
Studying Esperanto is most enjoyable and a relatively easy language to learn. However, gathering information relating to this international culture was a daunting task until I discovered Beginner's ESPERANTO by J.F.Conroy.It was like finding 'gold'!Not only is it a comprehensive textbook, but also aninspirational reference guide into the world of Esperanto. My only criticism is that, while each of the lessons has itsown helpful word list, a dictionary at the end of the book would have beenextremely useful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Esperanto book for English speakers
This classic Esperanto textbook is great for the beginning student, or for the more advanced student seeking to review specific points of grammar. It can be used by children as well as adult learners.

It is organized into a large number of mini-lessons, each on a single point. There is an index, so that if you are having trouble with a certain word or grammatical rule, you know just where to go to work on it.

It can be used in classrooms, but is also useful for self study. It is often used as a supplement to other Esperanto learning texts. As another reviewer pointed out, you will need an Esperanto dictionary. I recommend the one by J. C. Wells, which is a two-way dictionary which has stood the test of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for self-study or for teaching children
This is my favorite Esperanto textbook. Because it is broken up into 1,000 + lessons, one can study as much or as little as one wants per day.

Other Esperanto language books that I've seen (including Esperanto) introduce a number of grammar rules (or exceptions), vocabulary, and exercises. This is way too much for a young child! But this book breaks every new concept into it's own section. For instance, in one section you'll learn that there is no translation of the articles "a" and "an" in Esperanto.

Now, that's obviously too small a section to take up at one time... but you might want to only cover 2 sections, or maybe you'll want to take on 8 sections at a time. It's up to you - how much time you've got on your hands, the age of the student, etc.

One section, which introduced the first sentence and a number of nouns, I spent a week on with my children. But it was just one simple grammar rule, so it wasn't overwhelming at all. We all had fun.

The biggest drawback to this book is that not all the words are defined - the author assumes you will understand that "monto" means "mountain" and "dromedaro" is "dromedary". You'll need access to a good Esperanto/English dictionary in order to really succeed with this book.

At the end of 2 weeks study with this book, my kids knew well over 200 words (and we skipped the ones that would be more difficult for the younger ones, like the translation for "ideal" and the cities and rivers). We were on page 6... and already knew hundreds of words.

There are some really entertaining poems and quaint little words of wisdom. The author is quite a character, and the book is very lively.

This is an excellent resource, and I highly recommend it. Please email me if you would like some suggestions about using this book with children - we've been having a lot of success and a lot of fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good textbook for learning Esperanto.
This textbook has stood the test of time.It has seen multiple publishers and has stood up well.Although it is one of the older textbooks for English speakers learning Esperanto, it does not convey a dated feel.It is broken into over a thousand small, easily digestable lessons. This makes it extremely well suited to self-study students learning in their spare time. It's small size also makes it easy to take along. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars English to Esperanto is More Literal Than I Thought
This is a great dictionary for translating English words to Esperanto. It has a good summary in the first few pages of how to use the prefixes and suffixes. But the word order is a bit strange. There are two columns of words to a page. The second column does not follow the first column. The words are in alphabetical order for the first column to the end of that letter. Then the list continues in the second column at the beginning of that letter's chapter. It's a bit confusing since the words are still basically in alphabetical order. Why the publisher chose to print it in this way, I have no idea.

But this is only English to Esperanto. It does NOT have Esperanto to English. While it is true the title only says English-Esperanto, this is the first time I've come across a language dictionary that only went one way.But if you are only looking for that one direction, this is a good book to use, especially considering it's still in print.

It's true there are many good (maybe better) English-Esperanto dictionaries online, this is handy for when you need it in book form.

2-0 out of 5 stars public domain material
This is a reprint of ancient material with expired copyright that you can obtain freely on the web. Perhaps it is interesting historically but it is not up to date and was not a masterpiece of lexicography. If you need an Esperanto dictionary I would suggest Benson's "Comprehensive English-Esperanto Dictionary" and perhaps trying to dig up a used copy of Montagu Butler's Esperanto-English Dictionary.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
I'm not impressed. The dictionary is English to Esperanto only and the words are not even in alphabetical order. What a pity... ... Read more
