5-0 out of 5 stars Praise for Beyond Security Ethics & Violence
It's time someone in international relations penetrated the many rationales for security that enable us to get away with murder. To Burke, security is a self-justifying system of politics that operates mainly to keep itself going. How leading philosophers, scholars, and governments bolster that system becomes clear through Burke's careful, fearless, innovative, tender, and important analysis.

--Professor Christine Sylvester, University of Lancaster, UK

In a lucid and compelling book Anthony Burke dissects the politics of security in several theories of state territory. He also addresses closely a series of recent state practices of security. In doing so, he opens the door to a post-security politics, a politics that goes beyond the construction of permanent, unspecified enemies.

--Professor William E. Connolly, Johns Hopkins University, USA

It is rare to find a work of political philosophy that so skilfully combines a detailed knowledge of the contemporary scenes of national and international violence with close attention to the ontological and ethical principles by which we might regard and evaluate them. This properly scathing treatment of the modern paradigm of 'security' opens the way to an urgently demanded interrogation of the terms on which the lauded freedom of the West might be pursued beyond its current blatant disregard for the life of the Other.

--Dr Fiona Jenkins, Australian National University, Australia

The volume engages many of the major figures in political and ethical thinking in a dialogue that is both informative and self-reflective. Burke refuses to duck the big questions or take sides in some of the more polarized debates about international ethics. As such these meditations are provocative critical essays that should raise numerous talking points for scholarly discussion. Pitched as such to critical scholars looking for a fresh innovative theoretically informed but non-dogmatic voice in the seminar room, this book should do very well.

--Professor Simon Dalby, Carleton University, Canada

This is a very substantial book with an excellent and timely analysis of many significant security issues currently at play in the international community.

--Professor Thomas Keating, University of Alberta, Canada

Beyond Security, Ethics and Violence is one of those rare books that successfully combine sophisticated philosophical reflections with meticulous analyses of concrete political situations. In a series of compelling studies that range from the Middle East to East Timor, and from Vietnam to the War on Terror, Burke convincingly demonstrates that the strategic use of violence is far less controllable - and far less ethical - than commonly assumed.Beyond Security is a must read for anyone interested in critical moral reasoning at a time when war has become widely accepted as a normal and rational way of pursuing political objectives.

--Professor Roland Bleiker, University of Queensland, Australia ... Read more

Product Description
I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive when I first saw that an ethics class was a required course for my AA in Administration of Criminal Justice. But as the weekly assignments were issued I quickly learned that it would likely be one of the most important courses of the degree, and one that would directly effect how I perform my chosen career.

There are nine papers within this collection which were a part of an Administration of Criminal Justice degree at Bellevue College in Washington State. The course they were related to was Ethics in Criminal Justice.

Table of Contents:
1) Ethics: It’s in the Eye of the Beholder
2) Mixed Feelings: I’m right but I’m wrong
3) The Big Not So Big Problem
4) Cop Colored Glasses: An Explanation for Value Differences and Interactions Among Law Enforcement
5) Racial Profiling: A Value-based Decision, Not Racism
6) The Pursuit of Noble Cause and Stress Causing Hurtles
7) The Fork in the Road and Two Paths: Deontological Reasoning & Teleological Reasoning

Product Description
David Hume (26 April 1711 – 25 August 1776) was a Scottish philosopher, economist, historian and a key figure in the history of Western philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment. Hume is often grouped with John Locke, George Berkeley, and a handful of others as a British Empiricist. Hume was one of the first philosophers of the modern era to produce a thoroughly naturalistic philosophy; according to Hume, his work could do for philosophy what Isaac Newton's had done for science. Hume rejected the standard form of Enlightenment positivism, which believed in the power of Reason to determine all truths, moral, scientific, and other. Partly for this, and partly for his attacks on fundamental concepts like "causation", he has often been considered a skeptic. Instead of Reason, he believed that human nature, individual experience, emotions, inclinations, and passions as well as, crucially, habit and custom determine our ideas, beliefs, and actions. In the twentieth century, Hume has increasingly become a source of inspiration for those in political philosophy and economics as an early and subtle thinker in the liberal tradition, as well as an early innovator in the genre of the essay in his Essays Moral, Political, and Literary. - Wikipedia ... Product Description
Yet Another Way The Federal Government Loots Its Citizens: Yet Another Federal Rip-Off exposes the insidious collection practice exploited to collect debts owed to the United States federal government by individual taxpaying citizens: whereby the Internal Revenue Service(IRS)seizes through federal offset, so-called, the annual personal income tax refunds due taxpayers to forcibly repay dubious debts purportedly owed to various federal departments. Imposed on untold, unwitting taxpayers, this unscrupulous federal debt collection practice is deliberately designed to both compound and perpetuate long-term debt in particular, by crediting refunds seized not to the original principal debt owed, but rather to the outstanding and typically exorbitant interest incurred-in addition to those other arbitrary and capricious amounts of so-called "fees&costs" most unreasonably assessed. Named as negligently complicit in the specific case-study cited are do-nothing, good-for-nothing United States Representatives, Barbara Lee and John Garamendi. This pamphlet defiantly takes to task the entire imperious federal government as it brings to light its most corrupt mal-practice: legalized extortion of its citizens-especially in view of its richly irresponsible impoverishment of America, displayed most conspicuously through both its moral and monetary bankruptcy both at home and abroad. Let it raise yet another rallying cry for the next revolutionary TEA PARTY! ... Read more

Product Description
How much control do--or should--the courts and public policy have over the treatment of critically ill and disabled newborns?

The Baby Doe incident of 1982 spurred the federal government to create a public policy making failure to treat severely disabled newborns a form of child neglect.

Compelled Compassion focuses on public policy aspects of withholding treatment from critically ill, disabled infants, and especially dealing with why this policy was enacted and how it affects health care workers, the infants, and their families.Several contributors to this timely, controversial volume spearheaded the early debates on withholding treatment; others were active participants in the policymaking process itself.

Compelled Compassion makes a valuable contribution to our awareness of the complex, difficult process of decision making for these infants:a process laden with emotional, legal, and clinical ramifications, and strives to help clarify how the various factors can be applied in reaching a compassionate, but logical, decision for everyone involved in reaching it. ... Product Description

Bringing expert knowledge to bear in an open and deliberative way to help solve pressing social problems is a major concern today, when technocratic and bureaucratic decision making often occurs with little or no input from the general public. Albert Dzur proposes an approach he calls “democratic professionalism” to build bridges between specialists in domains like law, medicine, and journalism and the lay public in such a way as to enable and enhance broader public engagement with and deliberation about major social issues.

Sparking a critical and constructive dialogue among social theories of the professions, professional ethics, and political theories of deliberative democracy, Dzur reveals interests, motivations, strengths, and vulnerabilities in conventional professional roles that provide guideposts for this new approach. He then applies it in examining three practical arenas in which experiments in collaboration and power-sharing between professionals and citizens have been undertaken: public journalism, restorative justice, and the bioethics movement. Finally, he draws lessons from these cases to refine this innovative theory and identify the kinds of challenges practitioners face in being both democratic and professional.

Product Description

Against the all-too-familiar backdrop of corporate malfeasance, scandal in our religious institutions, political chicanery to serve ulterior motives, and constant reminders of the corruptive influence of power, For the Common Good showcases the insights, reflections, and recommendations of some of today's most forward-thinking and inspiring leaders, applying their expertise in fields such as ecology, education, and conflict resolution. Today's challenges test leaders to their very core, and require a fundamentally new kind of leadership committed to the greater good of society. From Nobel Prize winner, John Hume, to Leader-to-Leader Institute Chair, Frances Hesselbein, Harvard University's Howard Gardner to President Jimmy Carter, the contributors argue that because individuals, institutions, and societies are now so profoundly connected and inter-related, every decision of consequence has a ripple effect. Leaders of all stripes, including corporate executives, politicians, social activists, scientists, and educators, must display courage, integrity, humility, and the wherewithal to consider the long-term impact of their decisions and actions; most importantly, they must engage in dialogue and recognize that creative solutions to complex problems require collaboration. The result is a provocative and multi-dimensional exploration of leadership in troubled and troubling times—but with a hopeful note that individuals and organizations will rise to the challenges.
