1-0 out of 5 stars Spectrum Guide to Ethiopia
I have always been impressed by the quality of the used books that I ordered from Amazon until today. This was the first time that I received a book that really felt used. It's not in really bad shape and the price was still OK.However a photograph was cut out of it and I'm assuming that the seller didn't notice this.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
I think it goes without saying by this point, but this is by far the best book you could buy about travel in Ethiopia, I've read it about 3 times over now and I still really enjoy it.Theres not much out there about travel to Ethiopia, but even if there was, this book would stand head and shoulders above the rest

Product Description
How do communities grapple with the challenges of reconstruction after conflicts? In one of the first in-depth ethnographic accounts of refugee repatriation anywhere in the world, Laura C. Hammond follows the story of Ada Bai, a returnee settlement with a population of some 7,500 people. In the days when refugees first arrived, Ada Bai was an empty field along Ethiopia’s northwest border, but it is now a viable—arguably thriving—community.

For the former refugees who fled from northern Ethiopia to eastern Sudan to escape war and famine in 1984 and returned to their country of birth in 1993, "coming home" really meant creating a new home out of an empty space. Settling in a new area, establishing social and kin ties, and inventing social practices, returnees gradually invested their environment with meaning and began to consider their settlement home. Hammond outlines the roles that gender and generational differences played in this process and how the residents came to define the symbolic and geographical boundaries of Ada Bai.

Drawing on her fieldwork from 1993 to 1995 and regular shorter periods since, Hammond describes the process by which a place is made meaningful through everyday practice and social interaction. This Place Will Become Home provides insight into how people cope with extreme economic hardship, food insecurity, and limited access to international humanitarian or development assistance in their struggle to attain economic self-sufficiency. ... Excerpt: Lake Abaya (Abaya Hayk in Amharic) is a lake in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region of Ethiopia. It was named Lake Margherita by the Italian explorer Vittorio Bottego, the first European commonly thought to visit the lake, to honor the wife of king Umberto I of Italy, Queen Margherita. This name appears in older publications, and currently is rarely used. However, the American explorer Arthur Donaldson Smith records that the local inhabitants, who included an eye witness of the event, told him that the Italian explorer Eugene Ruspoli (died 1891) was killed by an elephant near the lake, which happened before Bottego reached Lake Abaya. Lake Abaya is located in the Great Rift Valley, east of the Guge Mountains. It is fed on its northern shore by the Bilate which rises on the southern slopes of Mount Gurage, and the Gidabo. The town of Arba Minch lies on its southwestern shore, and the southern shores are part of the Nechisar National Park. Just to the south is Lake Chamo. Lake Abaya is 60 kilometers long and 20 wide, with a surface area of...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2571727 ... Read more
