Product Description

The first voyage around the globe was a daring, high-stakes gamble that changed the world forever.

Portugal dominated the wildly lucrative spice trade, and Spain was desperate for a piece of the action. Spain had everything to gain. Portuguese officer Ferdinand Magellan had nothing to lose. His decades fighting for Portugal had left him with a crippled knee and his king's withering scorn.

And so Magellan left Portugal to lead an expedition for his country's bitter rival, Spain. He knew it would be an exceedingly dangerous voyage, but the reality proved much worse. Killer storms, mutinies, deadly battles, murders, deprivation and disease dogged the four-year journey. Magellan was driven to ever-greater extremes of brilliance, courage, brutality and madness as he sailed around the world.

Magellan's World is the story of a harrowing adventure, an inspiring and flawed hero, and an epic event in the history of the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars For a middle schooler studying the great explorers, Magellan's World will come in very handy
I will never hear Magellan's name again without having my mind refer back to this beautiful picture book. Text and illustrations combined left me feeling as if I had gone around the world with him--or almost around the world, as of course he never did finish the voyage himself. Author Stuart Waldman refrains from the usual political correct tendencies and is respectful albeit realistic as he recounts the historical trip that changed the world map for ever.

The maps in the book add enormously to the understanding of the story--most especially the one depicting the intricacies of the Strait of Magellan, which I had never seen so clearly, yet simply, drawn. The first page is a foldout map than if left open will serve as a guide to the reading on each page.

Although this is a picture book, watch out for more sensitive young children as you read aloud-- you may need to skip some of the more cruel ways with which people were treated. For a middle schooler studying the great explorers, Magellan's World will come in very, very handy. ... Read more

Product Description
The conquest of the North Pole was an elusive, almost impossible goal at the beginning of the last century. But a son of patrician parents, Robert E. Peary, and a son of sharecroppers, Matthew Henson, shared a dreamof conquering the unconquered North Pole and were brave enough to risk their lives numerous times before they finally succeeded. Henson’s great physical stamina and his ability to speak Inuit and develop warm relationships with the peoples of the Arctic were indispensable to the quest. He mastered the complexities of the dog sled and led the team across the layers of ice that covered the frigid, threatening Arctic Ocean. Henson and Peary’s jubilation at finally reaching the Pole was later dashed when controversy swirled around their achievement. Even after their deed was recognized, African American Henson’s contribution was largely overlooked. It took the world many years to hail him as a hero of exploration. ... Read more

I'd purchased this book for a younger black child who aspires to be an explorer. I will probably consign it to the trash bin rather than reading it to him.

Product Description
*This title was chosen as a 2001 Honor Book by the Society of School Librarians International.

On January 14, 1993, four women made history by becoming the first women to reach the South Pole on foot. For sixty-seven days and 660 miles they skied, dragging 200-pound sleds, across the white plains of Antarctica, challenged by its bitter temperatures and strong winds. But the biggest hardships they faced were internal, as each one struggled to keep mental focus, emotional perspective, and physical well being in the face of nearly unyielding stress.

This is a true story, told in diary excerpts, dispatches, letters, and narrative. It is an intimate account of four very different people aiming for a single goal: Ann, whose job as leader ultimately came before personal ambition; Sue, whose early worries first closed her off from others; Anne, who fought the injury and mood swings grinding her down; and Sunniva, whose sprained ankle forced her to accept help as well as give it.Because of their synergy and dedication, all four reached the Pole as a team. But as important for each was the inward journey.

Strong and strongminded women, carving out their own paths in life, are still enough of a rarity in books for teenagers to make this one special. It is illustrated with photos from the expedition.

Product Description
Each title in this series tells the story of a man or woman whose dedication to their chosen cause led to changes that affect all our lives today. Each includes a vivid description of the world in which the famous person lived. This book tells how the television, now a feature of almost every household in the developed world, began life in the front room of its inventor. John Logie Baird had a passion for inventing things. He was also interested in photography, and the narrative describes how it was this fascination with pictures coupled with his interest in the newly invented radio that fuelled his dream of inventing a machine that could broadcast pictures. Accurate illustrations help the reader understand how Baird's invention worked, and the text brings to life the excitement of the first real pictures transmitted in Hastings in 1926. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific reading for fifth and sixth graders
This National Geographic photobiography of George Mallory's life and the mystery surrounding his death on Mount Everest conveys the sense of adventure explorers like him had in the early part of the 20th century. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be inspired to pursue his or her own adventures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Children's book
This really is a children's book. It is very short. The pictures are horrible-- washed out black and white, more akin to a pale blue.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Tale of Everest
The book Mystery on Everest is about renowned English mountain climber George Mallory and his disappearance during his three attempts at climbing the world's tallest mountain, Mt. Everest. His one reason to try for Everest was "Because Its There". To this day, nothing is known of him if he made it to the summit or not after his third attempt. This photo biography tells the tale of his life in childhood, during the war, his family, and his hobby, mountain climbing. Educated at Cambridge, Mallory was always adventurous, but it wasn't until later on in life that he found his new love in the English hills, mountain climbing. He soon married his first wife and started a family. During World War One, he manned howitzers that pounded German positions behind enemy lines. After the war, he went back to his family. His desire for mountain climbing drew him to join expeditions to Everest in 1921, 1922, and 1924. A team of mountain climbers found Mallory's body in 1999, opening up a vast stockpile of questions that have not been able to be answered since his death. Did Mallory reach the summit 29 years before Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary ?

This photo biography is filled with many interesting pictures that explain more than words. I saw this book on the bookshelf and was instantly drawn to it. This book is very easy to read and had many black and white pictures. I greatly recommend this book to anybody that is interested in mountains, human will, or mystery. ... Read more
