Extractions: Our School I began seriously thinking about homeschooling my daughter after I read "Home Grown Kids" by Raymond and Dorothy Moore that my sister gave me for Christmas when Crystal was only 6 months old. Before she was born, my sister had given me an interesting book called "The First Three Years." I don't remember the author at the moment and I gave the book to my sister-in-law when she had her first child. I think that book planted the seed and "Home Grown Kids" watered it. Then when Crystal was a few years old I went to a homeschooling seminar where I learned a couple of tips, one of which I immediately put into practice. I called the Washington Homeschooling Organization (WHO) office here in the Seattle area and asked for their brochure. As soon as it arrived, I went to the library and checked out as many books that were on their suggested list as I could. And I read, and I read, and I read!!! I remember reading about John Holt and his unschooling type of approach. I remember checking out Mary Pride's Big Books and reading about all the different types of curriculum and Cathy Duffy's Christian Home School Manuals. It was then that I put the other tip I had learned at the homeschooling seminar into practice. The speaker recommended that we get a stack of 3 X 5 cards, get Mary Pride's Big Books and/or Cathy Duffy's Christian Home School manuals or other books like those and just pour over them. When we found something that we thought would fit our ideals and goals then we should write down the address on the 3 X 5 card, ask for their catalog, affix a postcard stamp to it and mail it off. Or better yet, go the post office, get the blank stamped postcards and use those.
