Extractions: Fathers Modeling Sexuality Career before children? Dads, let me share with you how I blew it with our first three children. Our first two came at a time when I was learning to be a doctor, and the third as I was getting a practice started. I bought into the philosophy of putting career pursuits ahead of everything. Having grown up without a father, I had no model of the importance of the father in child rearing. Besides, Martha was such a good mother. I felt I didn't need to be available. As with many fathers, I planned to get involved when the boys were old enough to throw a football. Big mistake! Know your child. Lesson number one for fathers: In order to discipline your children, you have to know them. And to know them, you have to be involved in nurturing them. Except for breastfeeding, there is nothing about babycare that father can't be involved in to some extent. I discovered I needed to hold our children more and open myself up to respond sensitively to their cries as best I could. I needed to realize that they needed what I had to offer as their father. My family needed me to be available to them.

Most fathers take an active role as the coach and sometimes even as the punching bag for their spouses during the birthing process. By being involved with the birth process, fathers begin generative fathering even before the child is born (Doherty, 1997) . As fathers become more involved in the birth process, they report feelings of closeness to their spouses and to their newborn children. Many fathers remember the first time holding their child as the beginnings of developing a close relationship with their son or daughter. Similarly, many fathers find tremendous joy (and struggles!) when involving themselves in the care of their infants. Marsiglio states that a father's involvement with his infant child serves as "a public symbol of their commitment to a more refined, progressive set of values" (1993, p. 5). Perhaps the most important thing a father can help his infant achieve is a sense of trust in the world. Fathers who care for their children in a responsive, consistent, and trustworthy way will help their precious infants to develop the sense that their needs will be met by loving individuals. This can be a foundation for healthy development throughout the child's life.

Extractions: Affirming the role of fathering in the home, workplace and community Your chance to participate in a unique program of action The Fathering the Future project, undertaken by the Australian Men's Working Group in support of the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN), seeks to work as a catalyst with the many people, organisations and interested groups currently involved in fathering and men's issues by providing an opportunity to pool energies and develop achievable initiatives. These will be supported through a national network, media awareness, fundraising and promotion. The project was launched with a one-day forum in Sydney on 4 September 1997 featuring keynote addresses and workshops from which initiatives will be developed to implement during 1998. More than 150 people in fields such as parenting education, health, counselling, sport, business and industry, school education, family law, media, advertising and community service attended this unique day of action. Manhood Online is working with the Australian Men's Project to provide an opportunity for everyone with online access to participate in the forum. We've set up bulletin board-style forums matching each of the topics covered in the workshops. You can post your views on any of these topics, read the views of others and respond to their ideas.
