The domestic cat is descended from the Eurasian wild cat and became tame in prehistoric times. Feral cats, i.e. those that do not depend on man for their survival, have been responsible for the extinction or depletion in numbers of countless animal species, especially birds and reptiles, in numerous islands across the world. On many occasions, they have been introduced either as a pet or to control plagues of rodents, but in the majority of cases, the result has been catastrophic for those island species which had evolved in the absence of predators. In some cases, the situation has become so extreme that governments of countries such as New Zealand, Australia and the United States, to name but a few, have been forced to develop intensive programmes for controlling and eradicating cat populations by means of traps, powerful poisons and even by propagating specific feline infectious diseases. The negative effect of cats on the native fauna of many islands is compounded by the changes to habitats caused by herbivore activity (animals such as goats, rabbits, etc.), introduced plants and, in the worst of cases, by the presence of rats. Some sadly famous examples include that of the wren of Stephen Island (New Zealand) and the black robin native to the Chatham Islands. The Stephen Island wren was a flightless bird whose numbers had been decimated by the Polynesian rat but its definitive extinction was largely due to the cat of the island's lighthouse-keeper in 1894. In the second case, cats were introduced by Europeans in the 19th century to control rabbit populations in Mangere Island but they ended up exterminating 12 bird species, including the black robin.

They would grab their gifts and cleverly maneuver the shell to get at the nut inside. We were enthralled at the entire performance. Next we happily skipped ahead to the deer herd enclosed in their fenced yard. We were convinced they belonged to that roly-poly, jolly guy who dressed in red. Of course we searched diligently for the most famous reindeer of all with the red nose. The only one to spot him for certain was (you guessed it) Dad. It was a thrill to get so close and to know the herd lived in the Bronx. Just a short run ahead was "the giant bird cage." It was very exciting to enter their world as a myriad of feathered creatures freely flew over our heads. What fascinated me also was the variety of birdcalls. Until this day I whistle to birds, mimicking their calls as I learned to do then. Some responded and came closer to examine us in wonder. One exhibit after another entertained us beyond our expectations. As many times as we visited we were never bored. There was always a new discovery and Dad enhanced it with his own shenanigans. He would skip along exhorting us to join him as he sang "Here we go gathering nuts and hay, nuts and hay, nuts and hay." We merrily skipped along singing, laughing, and eagerly anticipating the next stop of our tour.

The twin-engine aircraft, which can fly in all temperature conditions, was brought in Nepal by the American Air Force last week, according to the sources. Although the aircraft has a much higher pricetag, the RNA purchased it in a subsidised rate of US $ 40,000, the sources claimed. "Because we are the first South Asian party to buy the aircraft, the company offered us the subsidy," one RNA official told The Sunday Post. The small-sized, aircraft has 17 seats for para-dropping and 20 seats for ordinary passengers or security persons. "Its very light and will be very handy," an official said.

Only one other cat has this feature, the Clouded Leopard from Indonesia. Because of this feature the margay is able to descend a tree head first, while most cats back down, then jump when close enough to the ground. They can also hang from tree limbs by one hind foot. They are very fast and even during a fall they can grab a hold of a branch with one hind paw and climb up again. Margays can hunt, sleep and have their young in trees.
