Extractions: Bellevue, WA Ive played on the intercollegiate tennis team both my years here. During the season, I spend about 15 hours a week on tennis. Before I came to Tech I had taken lessons for a couple of years, and had played in some summer youth leagues and in high school for one year. Playing tennis is a huge time commitment, but the coach and the team all understand that academics come first. In general I think it forces me to manage my time better; when you have to practice between classes and dinner, its a great way to relax without feeling like youve procrastinated. This year we fundraised like crazy and went to Hawaii over spring break. Coming to Tech, I never imagined Id have the chance to do something like that. Caltech athletics (like much else about this place) have their own special character. It's not that we have no competitive spirit in fact, sports may be where all the competitiveness we don't express in class gets vented it's just that we're not elitist about it. (Being an NCAA Division III school has a way of keeping us humble.) We really believe that everyone who wants to do sports should be able to participate in one way or another, whether on an intercollegiate or club team, in Interhouse competition, or simply by
