October 28, 2002 CAC recognizes legendary field hockey coach Marina van der Merwe in honour of Women's History Month OTTAWA - In honour of Women's History Month , the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) is honouring four of Canada's greatest women coaches based on this year's theme, Women and Sports - Champions Forever! Each week during the month of October, CAC will profile a legendary woman coach who has made a significant contribution to coaching and to sport in Canada. This week's feature is Marina van der Merwe , the head coach of Canada's women's field hockey team from 1976 to 1995. Marina van der Merwe produced one of Canada's most impressive success stories in team sports. When she was named head coach of the national team in 1976, the prospect of Canada being an international powerhouse in women's field hockey seemed almost as logical as Mexico being near the top in ice hockey. But in the 1980s and early 1990s, van der Merwe realized what many considered an impossible task. She took over the 16th ranked Canadian women's field hockey team and led it to three Olympic Games appearances (1984, 1988, 1992) and silver and bronze medals at the 1983 and 1986 World Cups respectively. Over that period, the women's field hockey squad was Canada's best summer sports team, male or female.

Extractions: Encyclopedia Olympic games The modern revival of the Olympic games is due in a large measure to the efforts of Pierre, baron de Coubertin, of France. They were held, appropriately enough, in Athens in 1896, but that meeting and the ones that followed at Paris (1900) and at St. Louis (1904) were hampered by poor organization and the absence of worldwide representation. The first successful meet was held at London in 1908; since then the games have been held in cities throughout the world (see Sites of the Modern Olympic Games , table). World War I prevented the Olympic meeting of 1916, and World War II the 1940 and 1944 meetings. The number of entrants, competing nations, and events have increased steadily. Extractions: Al Bello/Allsport HISTORY Ice hockey emerged in the early 1800s as a cross between English field hockey and Indian lacrosse. The sport spread across Canada, played by Scottish and Irish immigrants as well as British soldiers. Athletes blended field hockey rules with an on-ice game created by the Micmac Indians of Nova Scotia. The first known organized women's hockey game takes place in Ontario, Canada. American dentist J.L. Gibson starts the first International Pro Hockey League, importing Canadian players to fill his teams. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is formed, using the French name Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG). Men's ice hockey debuts as an Olympic sport at the Summer Games held in Antwerp, Belgium. Canada captures the gold and the United States takes the silver. The Amateur Hockey Association of the United States (AHAUS), now called USA Hockey, Inc., is formed. At the Squaw Valley, Calif., Winter Games, the United States men's team wins its first Olympic gold medal. The victory increases the country's interest in the sport. High school programs begin feeding stronger players into the college hockey system. The Soviet Union men's team captures four straight Olympic gold medals.

One of the oldest of competitive pastimes, the sport of field hockey dates back well before the Ancient Olympic Games. Although the exact origin of the game remains unknown, 4,000-year-old drawings found in the tomb at Beni-Hasen in the Nile Valley of Egypt depicted men playing the sport. Throughout the following centuries, variations of the game were played by a spectrum of cultures ranging from Greeks and Romans to Ethiopians and Aztecs. Hockey first appeared on the Olympic program at the 1908 London Games and again in 1920 at Antwerp. The sport was again featured on the program at Amsterdam in 1928 and has been an Olympic sport ever since. Women's hockey became a fixture on the Olympic program in Moscow in 1980. Originally considered far too dangerous for female participation, field hockey quickly became popular with women whose previous introduction to sport included the "socially acceptable" outdoor activities of croquette and lawn tennis. With more and more women becoming active in the sport, the liberating game of field hockey earned the dubious title as the only team sport considered proper for women.

Extractions: Romans, Persians, Greeks, Arabs and Aztecs were enjoying jolly hockey sticks long before the fathers of the modern Games dreamt their dream. Indeed, Cleopatra and her descendants might once have peered out over a hockey match if sketches found in a tomb at Ben Hasan in Egypt that dates back 4,000 years are to be believed; they show a form of the game being played with sticks and rocks. Historians also believe that the native Indian populations of North America played a long version of the game, in which the goals were miles apart and hundreds of players took part throughout a whole day. What the called their game we may never know, as hockey is thought to be derived from the French word hocquet, meaning shepherd's crook, the shape of a hockey stick. The modern game, field hockey, was developed largely in English schools in the 1800s and was spread through the British Empire by the Army. Rules were standardised by the London Hockey Association after it was formed in 1886. It was not until 38 years later that the International Hockey Federation was born in Paris, while the federation for women's hockey followed in 1927.

The Games were a success, and a second Olympiad, to be held in France, was scheduled. Olympic Games were held in 1900 and 1904, and by 1908 the number of competitors more than quadrupled the number at Athensfrom 311 to 2,082. Although the Olympic Games have been increasingly politicized, the ideal of the world's best athletes competing against each other in the arena of so-called pure sport has been at least partially realized, especially from the athletes' point of view. And even though skill and courage are manifested by most Olympic participants, the great gold medalists are the ones who are most often remembered. More History

Extractions: Like most sports, the origins of hockey may never be fully unearthed. Versions of the sport, however, have existed in most ancient cultures such as the Roman, Greek, Persian, Arabic and Aztec civilizations Some anthropologists and sports historians believe hockey could be a derivative of hurling or shinty or vice versa. The most recent ancestral form of the sport was perhaps the medieval French stick game hoquet , a name that bears close resemblance to the English word, hockey. Modern field hockey was first played at schools in England in the late 10 th Century while the Hockey Association in London was founded in 1886. As with soccer and cricket, hockey was introduced to colonies of the British Empire by its Army. India and the Far East were the first colonies to embrace the game. In 1895, the first international competition was held and in 1908, hockey became an Olympic sport
