The two big budget animation helpings this summer, DreamWorks's Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron , consists of nontalking animals as the main characters, and Disney's breaks from their tradition of overly cute and nice main character and stars a naughty alien who is a fugitive of the law. Not only that but super thin heroines are taking the year off, along with cute comic sidekicks, over-the- top villains and A-list movie stars doing voice-overs. What exactly is going on here? The main reason is 2-D animation with all of its traditional ingredients has been failing at the box office big time for the past three years and even before that. In October 2001, Rob Sprackling and John Smith, who wrote the screenplay of Chicken Run , revealed that they had "a project with Disney which is based on garden gnomes. It’s a little story that we concocted using the famous English garden gnome as our lovable character, and that’s through Rocket Pictures which is Elton John’s company. They have a deal with Disney. We seem to have curiously found ourselves writing in the animation/CGI world. You tend to get known very quickly when writing to those parameters." A Disney insider revealed in May 2002 that animation director Kirk Wise was bailing on WDFA. He recently packed up his office on the Burbank lot, abandoning his long time film-making partner, Gary Trousdale in order to pursue live action opportunities. Which means that Trousdale will now have to develop his next project for Disney Feature Animation, , all by himself.

He went to work for San Francisco’s , the George Lucas company that has created special effects for eight of the top 15 box office hits of all time (winning 14 Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects), including Star Wars “I worked on The Mummy Returns and am presently on Star Wars: Episode II ,” says Ron. “I’m a Creature Wrangler - that includes skinning/ enveloping creatures, corrective shape modeling, clothing and hair and flesh simulations and script programming.” The traditional animation portion of his VFS training is something that he feels strongly about. “It was incredibly valuable,” says Ron. “It showed that CG animation didn't exist in a vacuum but builds upon the hard-won skills of the pioneers of animation.” He also emphasizes the importance of planning. “One of the strengths of the program was the emphasis placed on planning in CG. The grads I've come across from some other schools rarely see the value in it and so don’t work as efficiently as they could.”
