Their four large teeth - two on top, two on the bottom - are sharp enough to sever a finger. Several species also have spikes sticking out of their skin. When it becomes alarmed, a puffer fish puffs itself up with water or air and makes a squeaky noise. There are about 120 species of puffer fish or blowfish, globefish and fugu as they are also called. They grow up to 50 cm (20 in) long. They can puff themselves up because they have elastic skin and no ribs. Puffer fish live in the tropical and subtropical parts of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. They blend in with coral and prefer to stay near the bottom of the ocean where they can feed on molluscs and crustaceans. Sharks tend to eat puffer fish and so do humans. Eating fish isn't unusual except Angry Puffer Fish puffer fish are fatally poisonous. In Japan they are a delicacy after the poison has been removed but eating them can still be fatal. About 100 diners die each year after eating puffer fish. On April 23, 1996 a 23 year-old man ate a piece of puffer fish about the size of a quarter. Ten to 15 minutes later he felt tingling in his mouth and lips, followed by dizziness, fatigue, headache, difficulty speaking, tightness in his upper chest, shaking, nausea and vomiting. He collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.

Range: Notes: The freshwater drum is a silver-gray color on the sides with a white stomach. It has large eyes, a very high back, with a long dorsal fin with 24 - 32 rays and a rounded caudal fin. It is sometimes confused with the carp , however the carp has barbels and a deeply forked tail. A unique skeletal feature of the drum are the ear bones, known as otoliths. These are large and round with an "L" on one of the flattened sides. People collect them on the water's edge and consider them as "lucky stones." These otoliths have been found at prehistoric Indian sites used perhaps for good luck charms or as decorations to prevent sickness.

    Extractions: Most of us are familiar with the edible blue mussels that cling to rocks in the ocean's intertidal zone, and also, perhaps, with the ribbed horse mussel imbedded in the mud of salt marsh estuaries. But, what about fresh water? Are mussels found in rivers, streams and lakes as well? They certainly are! About 300 species of freshwater mussels are found in North America - the greatest diversity of any continent. Twelve native species occur in Connecticut, six of which are listed as endangered, threatened or special concern in the state. Contrary to general perceptions that mussels are about as interesting as dead stones, these animals are truly fascinating. Belonging to the Phylum Mollusca, they are related to marine octopus and squid, but only mussels, their bivalve clam cousins, and snails (Gastropoda) possess freshwater species. Mussels are filter feeders, pumping up to 40 liters of water per hour through their bodies in their quest for oxygen and food. Mussels may live from a decade to over a century, depending on species and habitat conditions. Most fascinating is the fact that fish play a critical role in a mussel's life cycle. Life begins when sperm, expelled by male mussels, is siphoned into a female and fertilizes her eggs. After two to ten months of brooding in her gills, the eggs develop into tiny (0.05 to 0.50mm diameter, smaller than a period on this page), strange-looking larvae called glochidia (glah-KID-ee-ah). When mature, hundreds of thousands of glochidia are released into the water, where a few will find their way to the correct host fish and attach themselves to its gills, fins or body. The glochidia soon become grown over, or encased, by fish tissues, forming a cyst.
