Extractions: Science Helps Sustain Great Lakes Fisheries STONY BROOK, NY, September 01, 1995 - Nearly destroyed by overexploitation, invasions of nonindigenous species and pollution in the first half of this century, the fisheries of the Great Lakes have undergone a remarkable rebirth. Today, the Great Lakes support world-class recreational fisheries that generate more than $4 billion in regional economic activity. Commercial fisheries generate another $270 million. Through coordinated research and direct interaction with state and federal management agencies over the past 25 years, the region's Sea Grant programs have contributed significantly toward sustained development of these fisheries. Thanks to the scientific data, techniques and new management tools provided by Sea Grant-funded research, Great Lakes fishery policies now are determined more by the lakes' biological capacity than by political and short-term economic pressures.

Extractions: MEDIA RELEASE 17th January 2003 Two men have been released on $1,000 bail to appear in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in 11 March 2003 on various fisheries related charges. Primary Industries and Resources SA (PIRSA) Fisheries Officers interviewed the men and as a result seized 55 abalone and a quantity of dive gear. Penalties for this type of offence can include a maximum fine of $60,000 and/or two years jail plus an additional penalty of five times the commercial value of the catch to a maximum of $30,000. In this case, officers were responding to information provided via the Fishwatch telephone number (1800 065 522). A male 38 and a female 35 both from Woolsthorpe in south western Victoria will appear in court at a later date charged with various offences. CITES -Convention on International Trade In Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora - is better known for putting trade bans on endangered elephants and turtles. At Its annual meeting in Chile in November it will vote on a recommendation (Document Doc.14) that will widen its powers. If passed. CITES will be allowed to get involved with any species "of commercial importance", whether endangered or not. In short. CITES will be able to invade the whole fisheries sector, applying trade restrictions on species, one by one. What's more, at this meeting CITES will also consider proposals to place basking sharks and whale sharks in Its Appendix II. This could be a precursor to a full trade ban. These moves are unnecessary because the Fisheries Committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has already recommended action plans for managing shark populations. Bit if passed, this will create major difficulties for fisheries operations everywhere. It is the first step to controlling all fisheries. And it is the first step to introducing layers of new bureaucracy for fishery exports. Common sense dictates that these proposals will be voted down. But will they? There is also a proposal in Chile to eliminate secret voting ballots at CITES meetings. So, small and poor nations will be at the whim of the powerful, facing threats and intimidation if they vote "the wrong way".

Extractions: Submission to the CEC The submission is being made to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) pursuant to Article 14 of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC) by Sierra Legal Defence Fund on behalf of Friends of the Earth Canada, Union Saint-Laurent, Grands Lacs, Conservation Council of New Brunswick, Ecology Action Centre, and Environment North. The environmental groups assert that the Government of Canada is in breach of its commitment under the NAAEC to effectively enforce its Fisheries Act and Pulp and Paper Effluent Regulations (the "PPER" ) in Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. Under the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation signed by Canada, the U.S. and Mexico as a side agreement to NAFTA, citizens can submit complaints if one of the member countries fails to effectively enforce its environmental laws. After reviewing the complaint, the CEC Secretariat may request a response from the Canadian government. The CEC Council could then direct the preparation of a factual record of Canada's failure to effectively enforce the Fisheries Act and the PPER The Pulp and Paper Industry in Canada Four out of every five tonnes of paper produced in Canada is exported, much of it to the United States. Pulp and paper is Canada's largest net export sector.
