Much of the course focuses on tropical agriculture in Africa, Asia, and Latin America; however, interactions and historic parallels between agriculture in these areas and contemporary industrial countries are also examined. Major processes of agricultural change and their relation to physical and social environments are among the main themes explored for a range of world regions and historical periods. Requirements This is a seminar course, with most class time devoted to discussion of the assigned readings and topics. Attendance and participation in discussions is essential and will be taken into account in students' grades. Students will take turns helping to direct discussion on the main readings and topics and will be expected to present and circulate brief written synopses or discussion papers based on the readings. This course is an overview of the geographic and historic background to agriculture and livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa as well as the current conditions and directions of change in African agricultural systems. This is an interdisciplinary social science course, and no prior knowledge of agricultural science is required, but agronomic and agroecological findings and perspectives will be included in the course. Students will be expected to write several short summary papers and give one or more class presentations based on the readings, as well as a term paper (for undergraduates) or research paper (for graduate students) on one of the course topics. Expect temperatures to exceed 90 degrees F (32 C) and humidity to hover near 100 percent. The most pleasant weather is usually found during winter months between December and March when temperatures are more likely around 75 degrees (25 C) and the humidity becomes bearable. It rains nearly every day in most months (perhaps less during the winter), but the showers are generally short and the sun usually quickly reappears. Hurricane season lasts from August through late October. During these months, fierce tropical storms can bring dangerously high winds and inundating rainfalls. Florida is the sunshine state and also the Thunderstorm and Lightning State. Due to the abundance of warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and the hot tropical sun, conditions are perfect for the formation of thunderstorms. Every year, many injuries and fatalities are caused by lightning strikes on Florida golf courses and beaches. Nature has not endowed Florida with many mountains, rolling hills or panoramic vistas, as its terrain is rather flat. But it has gorgeous white sand beaches and blue lagoons lined with palm trees and tropical flora.

Extractions: The Florida Keys have been designated a National Marine Sanctuary (like an underwater national park) in order to protect one of America's only living coral reefs. Some areas of the 2800 square nautical mile sanctuary will be set aside for recouperation and some for special uses (jetskis in some areas, non-motorized boats only in others). Everyone has an interest in the fate of the Sanctuary and our country's underwater resources. The final draft of the Mangement Plan for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is being submitted to state and federal officials for their approval. Tell the policy makers that you want strong protection for the seagrass beds, mangroves, and coral reef. Ask them to support strong regulations and the necessary funding to preserve the habitat that is home to the Key's unique marinelife, from parrotfish to manatees, herons to crocodiles. Florida's main economic growth began in the early 20th century, and by the 1990s it had a diversified economy, noted especially for the production of citrus fruit, vegetables, and electronic equipment. Millions of tourists visit the state each year, lured by the warm climate and attractions such as the John F. Kennedy Space Center, on Cape Canaveral. Florida's population nearly tripled between 1960 and 1990, many of the new inhabitants being retired persons from other parts of the U.S. and immigrants from Caribbean countries. In 1513 the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon named the region Florida (Span., "flowery"), either because the vegetation included many flowers or because the time of his visit was Easter week (Span., "Pascua florida"). Florida is known as the Sunshine State. Florida is mainly a large peninsula that extends about 645 km (about 400 mi) between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Much of the rest of the state forms the narrow Panhandle between Georgia and Alabama on the N and the Gulf of Mexico on the S. Florida is the 22d largest state, with an area of 170,313 sq km (65,758 sq mi). The lowest point is sea level, and the highest point, an unnamed spot in Walton Co., in the Panhandle, is only 105 m (345 ft) above sea level; the approximate mean elevation of the state is just 30 m (100 ft). The dimensions of Florida, which has a coastline of 2173 km (1350 mi), are about 725 km (about 450 mi) from N to S and about 580 km (about 360 mi) from E to W. The federal government owns 9.4% of Florida's land area.

Extractions: Monroe County, which includes the western most fringe of islands, or keys, of the great West Indian group, has the unique distinction of giving the boundary lines to both the eastern and western limits of the United States, and, if Porto Rico is not taken into account, to the southern. Key West, its capital, was for years the most populous city in Florida, but now ranks fifth [1923]. In the naval and international affairs of the western continent, it has been considered by common military and diplomatic consent the key to control of the West Indies and the Gulf of Mexico. Since Florida became American territory, Key West has therefore been an established military and naval base, and is, moreover, the gateway to the Panama Canal. The ten thousand islands, embracing 700 square miles, and now included within the bounds of Monroe County, include those which lie south of Biscayne Bay, or Dade County. Key West is the largest of the coastal chain of islets, which protrude into the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico and form a clear outlook into the Caribbean Sea toward the east. It has an area of about 2,000 acres. Still farther west, and within the bounds of Monroe County are such minor keys as Cotteral's and Marquesas. The continental portion of Monroe County embraces the extreme southern points of the peninsula of Florida, and includes the famous Cape Sable, an ancient landmark to the navigators of the southern seas of the New World. North of Cape Sable is Ponce de Leon Bay, and still farther along the northwest coast of the county is the commencement of the long chain of Gulf keys known as the Ten Thousand Islands. This small portion of Monroe County adds three or four hundred miles to its land area, bringing the total to 1,125 [1923].
