Still, about half of the US population fails to receive the maximum benefits possible from community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride products. Fluoride also plays a role in bone health. The role of high doses of fluoride for prevention of osteoporosis is undergoing active study and is considered experimental at this point. Dietetics professionals should routinely monitor and promote the use of systemic and topical fluorides, especially in children and adolescents. The American Dietetic Association strongly reaffirms its endorsement of the use of systemic and topical fluorides, including water fluoridation, at appropriate levels of intake, as an important public health measure. When there is excess of fluoride in the body it can interfere with the function of the thyroid gland. It is possible that iodine deficiency, which is the most common cause of brain damage and mental disability in the world, could be lessened by simply cutting back on the use of fluoride.

Pollution standards and objectives are the responsibility of the regulatory authorities and are set for the purpose of pollution control. These may be based on scientific criteria starting point but they also take into account the optimal socioeconomic impact of proposed measures as well as the state of existing technology. In this work particular attention is directed to receptors and contaminants (and their interactions) important to Canada. Members of the Associate Committee, its Subcommittees and Expert Panels, serve voluntarily and are selected for their individual competence and relevant experience with due consideration for a balance among all sectors in Canada. Responsibility for the quality of study documents rests with the Associate Committee. Each report is carefully reviewed according to a multi-stage procedure established and monitored by the National Research Council of Canada in order to preserve objectivity in presentation of the scientific knowledge. According to data presented at a recent meeting in Geneva, more than 800 million people throughout the world now benefits from fluorides, the most common natural occurring fluoride chemical compounds, as a means of controlling caries and maintaining oral health. This is mostly achieved through the fluoridation of water for (210 million people), salt (50 million) or toothpaste (450 million). Ground water in its natural condition almost always contains fluoride, but in concentrations that vary widely from one place to another. Fluoride has been known for several decades to be effective against dental caries, and it acts in several ways. When present in dental plaque and saliva, it hastens the remineralization of incipient enamel lesions before cavities can become established. It also interferes with glycolysis, the process by which bacteria metabolize sugars to produce acid. In higher concentrations, it has a bacterial effect and when ingested during the period of tooth development, fluoride is thought to make the enamel more resistant to later acid attacks.

Basic facts about fluoride Fluoride exists fairly abundantly in the earth's crust and can enter groundwater by natural processes; the soil at the foot of mountains is particularly likely to be high in fluoride from the weathering and leaching of bedrock with a high fluoride content. According to 1984 guidelines published by the World Health Organization (WHO) , fluoride is an effective agent for preventing dental caries if taken in 'optimal' amounts. But a single 'optimal' level for daily intake cannot be agreed because the nutritional status of individuals, which varies greatly, influences the rate at which fluoride is absorbed by the body. A diet poor in calcium, for example, increases the body's retention of fluoride.

When a free fluoride clinic was set up one summer in our school, all the kids in town lined up to have the bitter tasting stuff rubbed on their teeth. We were pretty gullible in those days. The period immediately following World War II was a time of scientific advancement. After the inventions of nylon, rayon, plastic and other marvelous products that replaced fabrics, rubber and steel during the war years, people were lulled into the belief that those balding men in white laboratory jackets could solve all of the problems of the world. The belief was so strong that we blindly accepted whatever a "scientist" told us. Nobody dreamed that we might be victims of fraud. My father was part of the magic. He worked as a chemical engineer for a factory that made a variety of products out of wheat and corn starch (including the brain-killing excitotoxin monosodium glutamate). He provided well and I consequently made regular visits to a dentist every summer. I knew well the agony of the dentist drill. It was nothing like the advanced water-cooled high-speed equipment used by modern dentists. Repairing a cavity doomed us to what seemed like hours of white-knuckle torture under the glaring lights of the dental chair, while a man with plastic rimmed glasses and bad breath bored his way through teeth (and bone?). Once the drilling was done, the dentist filled the hole he made with a hot metallic material that burned when it went in, and left a bad taste in your mouth.

Because fluoride in drinking water helps reduce tooth decay it is important to have the appropriate amount of fluoride in the water we drink. The amount of fluoride we get depends on how much water we drink, which is strongly influenced by the climate in which we live. In warmer climates people usually drink more water and drink less in cooler climates. Therefore municipal water supplies that are fluoridated key the concentration of fluoride to the climate. It is also possible to get too much fluoride, which may cause fluorosis of teeth, resulting in opaque white spots or, in more severe cases, brown staining or mottling of the enamel. Baylor College of Dentistry provides a water fluoride analysis service so that people may know how much fluoride they are getting. This service may be obtained through a dentist's office or individuals may contact the Dental College directly. A mailer will be sent containing special sample tubes and directions for collecting and sending the water samples. There is a modest fee of $10.00 per sample for the service. We are no longer able to carry accounts and bill for services. A check for $10.00 should accompany each sample and may be from either the doctor or the patient.

The reason: U.S. drug regulators were beginning to doubt the safety of fluoride, particularly to children, and demanded warnings on the labels. Health Canada has not followed the U.S. lead, although fluoride toothpaste here does carry a mild warning to avoid swallowing it. But attitudes toward fluoride in this country are also beginning to change. Dr. Hardy Limeback is a leading Canadian fluoride authority who is often cited by health officials in their defense of fluoridated water. He is also a long-standing consultant to the Canadian Dental Association and a professor of dentistry at the University of Toronto. But in an interview last week, he conceded that fluoride may be destroying our bones, our teeth and our overall health. Although he still believes fluoride in toothpaste is effective against tooth decay, he says it doesn't need to be added to our water and we may be taking unnecessary risks by doing so. "There is no point swallowing fluoridated water. The only benefit comes with direct contact with the teeth." Limeback is currently studying fluoride buildup in the body, and his results, like those of other studies, are worrisome. "What we're finding indicates a trend: Torontonians have double the fluoride levels in their hip bones compared to Montreal, where water is not fluoridated." What effect these high fluoride deposits in our bones will have is unclear, he says, "but we know that in areas of the world where water is naturally high in fluoride, skeletal fluorosis is a widespread problem."

The recommendation of the Committee was that more research be done, before proceeding with this national mass medication. Their recommendation was totally ignored. This can, however, be used to one's advantage if one happens to find an "expert" who verifies your own views on the benefits of natural versus chemical approaches to health. But company officials worried that the tests might alarm employees, so they asked that he come out first to allay any fears among the men. "It is easy to understand that extensive sample-taking of this character may cause (workers) to wonder about their health," Wolf's boss wrote to Harshaw executives just after the doctor's trip. "It was for this reason that Dr. Wolf (visited) to explain to them that all of our records indicated that no unusual hazard existed." Actually, the severe hazards already documented at Harshaw were getting worse.
