Extractions: Macedonia Historical Macedonia (from whence Alexander the Great set out to conquer the ancient world in the 4th century BC) is today contained mostly in present-day Greece, a point Greeks are always quick to make when discussing contemporary Macedonia's use of that name. The Romans subjugated the Greeks of ancient Macedonia in the mid-2nd century BC, and when the empire was divided in the 4th century AD, this region became part of the Eastern Roman Empire ruled from Constantinople. Slav tribes settled here in the 7th century, changing the ethnic character of the area. In the 9th century, the region was conquered by the Bulgarian tsar Simeon, and later, under Tsar Samuel, Macedonia was the centre of a powerful Bulgarian state. Samuel's defeat by Byzantium in 1014 ushered in a long period when Macedonia passed back and forth between Byzantium, Bulgaria and Serbia. After the crushing defeat of Serbia by the Turks in 1389, the Balkans became part of the Ottoman Empire, and the cultural character of the region again changed. In 1878, Russia defeated Turkey, and Macedonia was ceded to Bulgaria by the Treaty of San Stefano. The Western powers, fearing the creation of a powerful Russian satellite in the heart of the Balkans, forced Bulgaria to give Macedonia back to Turkey. In 1893, Macedonian nationalists formed the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation (IMRO) to fight for independence from Turkey, culminating in the Ilinden uprising of May 1903, which was brutally suppressed three months later. Although nationalist leader Goce Delcev died before the revolt, he became the symbol of Macedonian nationalism.

Home A Short History of Women in Black In January 1988, one month after the first Palestinian Intifada broke out, a small group of Israeli and Palestinian women stood once a week, at the same hour and at the same location - a major traffic intersection in Israel. They were dressed in black and held up a black sign in the shape of a hand with "Stop the Occupation" written in white. 'It was a simple form of protest that women could do easily... We could bring our children, there was no chanting or marching, and the medium was the message. Within months vigils sprang up throughout Israel' Bat Shalom - Israeli women's peace organisation Women in Black were inspired by earlier "women wearing black" like the Black Sash, in South Africa, and the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, seeking the 'disappeared' in Argentina. WiB in the UK also developed from women refusing violence, militarism and war, like the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, formed in 1915, and the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp, which successfully opposed the deployment of US missiles throughout the 1980's. The Israeli/Palestinian WiB vigils initiated a formula that was taken up in many other countries. Vigils were regular and predictable: same place, same time each week. Women wore black and were mainly silent. They were seen by many passers-by, some of whom heckled and abused them as 'whores' and 'traitors'. Their policy was not to shout back but to maintain silence and dignity.

The document in question is a "draft", some 200 pages long, with numerous annexes, graphs and diagrams; its title is Report about the disintegration of states . Italian weekly presented an abridged version of the Report , adding that the report is the result of interdisciplinary research which, without availability of computerized analysis, because of huge amount of collected data from over six hundred fields, would require at least ten years of man hours. The authors of the Report consider four basic reasons for disintegration of states: ideological-revolutionary and civil wars, ethnic conflicts, genocide and "politicide", and radical and traumatic changes of ruling structures. The Report includes a map of world on which all states are placed in one of four basic categories, according to their future prospects: uncertain, low, medium and high risk of disintegration. United States of America, Australia, European Union and Japan are placed among the low risk countries. Red color, denoting high risk covers all formerly Soviet Muslim countries, India, Turkey, large part of African countries and almost all of South America. In Europe, the zone of high risk encompasses Croatia, Muslim-Croatian Federation, Republic Srpska, Albania and Macedonia, while FR Yugoslavia, Slovenia and Romania were placed in the medium risk zone.

Croatia is recovering from war, and its territory is intact, although most of its Serbs have fled or been driven out. Whether two republics of such unequal size can work together in one federation remains to be seen. The new deal is for a loose union for three years, after which either republic can opt for independence. On paper it is a sensible compromise. In reality it will be hard, but not impossible, to make it work - if there is enough goodwill.

Extractions: November 11, 1993 American and Western foreign policy toward Central and Eastern Europe suffers from a fundamental misunderstanding of the region's complex history. There are two primary reasons for this: (1) The study of Central and Eastern Europe in the West was tied to Soviet Studies. As a result, the conflicts within the countries of Central and Eastern Europe were seen as less important to U.S. foreign policy given the Cold War and the East-West confrontation; and (2) Central and Eastern European history is often studied in three periods, pre-World War I, the Peace Years (between the wars), and Post-World War II, rather than as a continuous process of history. This division of history leads to poor analysis because it dismisses over a thousand years of historical development and nation building. The students of more modern Central and Eastern European affairs tend to view the region as a constant, with the countries existing after World War I and II as historical nations. Therefore, the outbreak of the bitter ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia caught many off guard. Historically, however, many of these ethnic groups were often at odds due to differences in religion, culture, and economic and political development. It is therefore simply logical that these groups did not form a single historical nation on their own. It was Western influence that led to the formation of post World War I "nations" such as Yugoslavia. Without a correct historical analysis and thorough understanding of the region, development of a coherent and consistent U.S. foreign policy is made more difficult.
