Extractions: In 1914, an ecumenical conference was held in Switzerland by Christians seeking to prevent the outbreak of war in Europe. Before the conference ended, however, World War I had started and those present had to return to their respective countries. At a railroad station in Germany, two of the participants, Henry Hodgkin, an English Quaker, and Friedrich Sigmund-Schultze, a German Lutheran, pledged to find a way of working for peace even though their countries were at war. Out of this pledge Christians gathered in Cambridge, England in December 1914 to found the Fellowship of Reconciliation. The US FOR was founded one year later, in 1915.

The earliest records of stringed instruments in Dardania (1) (territory of Macedonia and southern parts of Serbia) show that plucked-string instruments have existed in Yugoslavia since pre-Christian time, around 300 years B.C. The Byzantine chronicler Teofilakt Simokata records the first evidence of the zither, used by the old Slavs who settled in the Balkans, in the seventh century. He reported an incident that occurred when three Slavonic soldiers, armed only with their plucked-string zithers, were captured by the army of the Byzantine emperor Mavrikie. Nevertheless it would be unjustified to claim, that the Slavs were solely responsible for the development and expansion of the guitar-like instruments on Yugoslav soil. Bibliography The participants in the course had different educational backgrounds, and there could sometimes also be significant age differences. It should consequently come as no surprise that the appeal of the various lecturers/facilitators varied from person to person. However, most of the participants have been very pleased with the lecturers. And since the course has aspired to presenting the best that Norway has to offer, it has been possible to select scholars with good standing within their particular fields. This was felt to be especially important by participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina because of the local brain drain. When it comes to the content of lectures more directly related to peacebuilding practices, it seems that the benefits experienced by the participants depended a lot on their individual backgrounds. Some had quite extensive experience in human rights theory and practice, while others were introduced to the relevant concepts for the first time. As a consequence, some people felt that they were introduced to more new concepts than they could digest, while others would have liked additional material. This is perhaps

The rivalries between Serb, Croat and Muslim communities in Yugoslavia date back centuries. Created in the aftermath of World War I, the country was first known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The name Yugoslavia was adopted in 1929. During World War II, Croats joined the Nazis in exterminating Serbs and others. The Serbs took up arms and hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians were killed on both sides. Josip Broz Tito, a partisan leader, led the resistance against the Nazis, ultimately driving them from Yugoslavia. Following the war, Tito was elected to lead the newly created Yugoslav Federation. Tito ruled with an iron fist, keeping ethnic rivalries in check. Despite such problems as astronomical inflation, the nation held together for a decade after Tito's death in 1980. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, democratic movements swept across much of Eastern Europe, including Yugoslavia. With the election of non-communist governments in four of Yugoslavia's six republics, the Federation began to crumble and ethnic divisions resurfaced.
