Extractions: With the Superdisc, Alan Adler returned to his original flying toy mission of inventing an improved "Frisbee." Conventional flying discs such as the Frisbee have a center of aerodyanmic lift near the leading edge of the disc in flight. This creates a tendancy for a flying disc to roll right during right handed throws and to roll left during left handed throws. The breakthrough spoiler rim design of the Superdisc, like the spoiler rim of the Aerobie rings, centers the aerodyamic lift of the disc during its entire flight, making the Superdisc a very stable flyer. The result is a flying disc that is very easy for people of all skill levels to throw well. The Superdisc also has a soft, rubber edge that has many benefits. It provides a great grip for strong throws, it is soft to catch, and it does not develop sharp scratches and burrs like a conventional disc when it hits pavement. The soft edge is also kind to a dog's mouth when the Superdisc is used for play with a dog.

Extractions: hey mr. Wild dancer, the problem with Wham-o is simply a matter of poor marketing decisions. When Ultimate became a sport, Wham-o (which did not invent the Frisbee, by the way), decided to remain outside the sport, and never became a big player. It stuck to recreational discs. Discraft, on the other hand, did, and now it is the major player in Ultimate disc production (they have invested more in design and aerodynamics, and more importantly, support of ultimate as a sport. Wham-o has not, although they retain rights to the word Frisbee and are trying to become a niche player once again). Here's a graph from a story I wrote a while back that tells you how we got to ultimate. I included the whole story just below it in case you want to read more. You'll find the photos at www.islandscene.com with a search under my name and ultimate: I was a petulant beginner. I couldn't imagine anyone would take a Frisbee any more seriously than a hula hoop. After all, this thing started off as a pie pan. The first plastic prototype was invented in 1948 by California carpenter Fred Morrison. Wham-O Inc. foresaw soaring sales and began marketing Morrison's disc as the Pluto Platter, a name inspired by the nation's obsession with UFOs. In 1958, Wham-O modified the disc and renamed it Frisbee, a word derived from the East Coast Frisbie Pie Co., which sold its pies in tin pans in the early 20th century. According to lore, company workers, and later Yale students, played catch with the empty pie tins. Today, Frisbie tins draw top dollar in antique shops, and many companies market flying discs of all types and weights.

Extractions: Executive Summary Table of Contents Introduction Problem Statement Design Partition Discussion of Design Pole Infrastructure Subsystem Basket Design Subsystem Catching Mechanism Subsystem Ground Support Subsystem Solid Modeling Finite Element Model Conclusion Introduction Problem Statement A casual glance at discgolf catalogs will reveal that some companies are charging as much as $300er target. Considering that a standard round of discgolf requires eighteen holes, this new recreation could get quite expensive for the average weekend warrior. We would like to provide consumers with an alternative. A lightweight, collapsible pole-hole target or disc catcher. Our design will consist of a segmented pole that can be grounded in dirt, clay, gravel, or anywhere that one would want to practice their sport. As opposed to the products currently available, our design will feature a collapsible basket that will allow for easy storage in any car and a definite advantage in portability. In addition, we will strive to make our device the lightest, self-contained device on the market. We understand that there may be some who are interested in the sport but do not have a field near their home or are turned away by the price of the equipment. Discussion of Design Our design consists of four major components: the pole infrastructure, the collapsible basket, the disc-catching assembly, and the ground support sub-system.
