Product Description
This econometric study covers the world outlook for zinc sulfate (100 percent ZnSO4.H2O) across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for zinc sulfate (100 percent ZnSO4.H2O). It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more

Product Description

John Hill Brinton (1832–1907) met, observed, and commented on practically the entire hierarchy of the Union army; serving as medical director for Ulysses S. Grant, he came into contact with Philip H. Sheridan, John C. Frémont, Henry W. Halleck, William A. Hammond, D. C. Buell, John A. Rawlins, James Birdseye McPherson, C. F. Smith, John A. McClernand, William S. Rosecrans, and his first cousin George Brinton McClellan. John Y. Simon points out in his foreword that Brinton was one of the first to write about a relatively obscure Grant early in the war:

"Brinton found a quiet and unassuming man smoking a pipe—he could not yet afford cigars— and soon recognized a commander with mysterious strength of intellect and character."

Positioned perfectly to observe the luminaries of the military, Brinton also occupied a unique perspective from which to comment on the wretched state of health and medicine in the Union army and on the questionable quality of medical training he found among surgeons. With both A.B. and A.M. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and postgraduate training in Paris and Vienna at a time when most medical schools required only a grammar school education, Brinton was exceptional among Civil War doctors. He found, as John S. Haller, Jr., notes in his preface, "the quality of candidates for surgeon’s appointments was meager at best." As president of the Medical Examining Board, Brinton had to lower his standards at the insistence of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Haller points out that one "self-educated candidate for an appointment as brigade surgeon explained to the board that he could do ‘almost anything, from scalping an Indian, up and down.’" Brinton assigned this singular candidate to duty in Kansas "where Brinton hoped he would do the least amount of damage." Throughout the war, the dearth of qualified surgeons created problems.

Brinton’s memoirs reveal a remarkable Civil War surgeon, a witness to conditions in Cairo, the Battle of Belmont, and the Siege of Fort Donelson who encountered almost every Union military leader of note.

Brinton wrote his memoirs for the edification of his family, not for public consumption. Yet he was, as Haller notes, a "keen observer of character." And with the exception of Brinton’s acceptance of late nineteenth-century gossip favorable to his cousin General McClellan, Simon finds the memoirs "remarkable for accuracy and frankness." His portrait of Grant is vivid, and his comments on the state of medicine during the war help explain, in Haller’s terms, why the "Civil War was such a medical and human tragedy."

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of W.I.T.C.H. #4 by Julia, a 9 year old girl
I liked this book, because it has action and friendship in it.When Will's dormouse escapes, she goes to Meridian to find it and gets attacked by black roses in Phobos's garden. She meets a gardner, who tells her that his family has suffered a very bad fate. It's not as good as other W.I.T.C.H. books, but it's still very good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great

I wonder if moving away from here might change things-
Might make them better? It made me really want to read what happens next!

i thougth that the book was great. i am a big fan of nancy drew. whoever wrote this book.. (there are various authors) they should write more

4-0 out of 5 stars A book full of mystery
NancyDrew and the lilac inn is a book full of mystery.

From reading the frist 3 chapters the book begins to get puzzling and confussing to the
mind.
The strange avents that follow one after the other make it longer to finish. This book dose not contain the best or average wonder and thrill as the other Nancy Drew books.

You will only very very enjoy this book if you are...
* a person who can really really be paitent and can wait a long time without getting bored
* a person who likes taking risks and likes books with risk takers in them
*a person who likes danger

If you are not a person with all theese guiltys then you will noy strongly like this book.
I recomend that you read Nancy Drew and the Secret of the old attic

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Mystery
I bought this book for my niece because I remember how much I enjoyed it when I was her age.It didn't dissapoint..in fact it has encouraged her to read more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Double in Disguise
This book is about a girl named Nancy. In this book she goes to the Lilac Inn for her friend's wedding. When she's there she figures out that she has a double. A double is someone that looks exactly like you. Her double is pretending she's Nancy, but at the same time she's trying to kidnap the real Nancy. In the book there are life threatening moments for Nancy. Like when the fake Nancy and her friends put Nancy in a submarine and try to sink her. My favorite part was when there was an earthquake (a fake earthquake). I recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries and exciting stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of W.I.T.C.H. #7by Julia, a 9 year old girl
I liked this book, though not as much as "Illusions and Lies."My favorite part is when Cornelia reads an old journal describing her adventures with Elyon. For instance, in the journal Elyon drew a picture of Caleb, Cornelia's crush from another world (whom she hasn't met yet).Another entry describes when Elyon went to Cornelia's skating tournament, where she won third place. Later, Cornelia goes to Meridian herself, where she meets Caleb. He'd just rescued her from a surprisingly deep fountain.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
This is my favorite W.i.t.c.h. book!If you skip this book, and read ahead to the other books, it would not make sense.Cornelia meets the man who she dreamed of and Elyon joins Cornelia in taking out evil! This is a major, major, major have for the W.i.t.c.h. lover!

Product Description
Lawson's expository lectures, presented at a CBMS Regional Conference held in Santa Barbara in August 1983, provide an in-depth examination of the recent work of Simon Donaldson, and is of special interest to both geometric topologists and differential geometers. This work has excited particular interest, in light of Mike Freedman's recent profound results: the complete classification, in the simply connected case, of compact topological 4-manifolds. Arguing from deep results in gauge field theory, Donaldson has proved the nonexistence of differentiable structures on certain compact 4-manifolds. Together with Freedman's results, Donaldson's work implies the existence of exotic differentiable structures in $\mathbb R^4$-a wonderful example of the results of one mathematical discipline yielding startling consequences in another. The lectures are aimed at mature mathematicians with some training in both geometry and topology, but they do not assume any expert knowledge. In addition to a close examination of Donaldson's arguments, Lawson also presents, as background material, the foundation work in gauge theory (Uhlenbeck, Taubes, Atiyah, Hitchin, Singer, et al.) which underlies Donaldson's work. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The 2nd best introduction to Donaldson's theorem after Freed & Uhlenbeck
Lawson's "The Theory of Gauge Fields in Four Dimensions" is somewhat of a forgotten book. Though it treats almost exactly the same material as Freed & Uhlenbeck's Instantons and Four-Manifolds (F&U), is almost as easy to understand, and is still in print, it no longer is cited much in the gauge theory literature. But considering that F&U is OOP and consequently sometimes expensive, it is a worthwile substitute with even a few advantages over its more famous rival.

You can see an introduction to Donaldson gauge theory under my review of F&U, but essentially, Donaldson's theorem was the first major topological result in gauge theory that really put the subject on the (mathematical) map and won Simon Donaldson a Fields Medal. The theorem is based on the result that characteristic-1 solutions modulo gauge equivalence to the self-dual Yang-Mills equation over a closed smooth 4-manifold themselves form a manifold with various properties (nonempty, 5-dimensional, orientable, with a noncompact end that is diffeomorphic to the underlying 4-manifold, smooth except at singularities that are homeomorphic to cones on complex projective space). The proof, as is typical in gauge theory, involves a mixture of hard nonlinear analysis, differential geometry, index theory, and spin geometry, and is very technical, long (practically the whole 100-page book is a single proof, and incomplete at that), and difficult for the beginner to wade through. Lawson breaks it down stepwise, introducing the necessary geometry and analysis (quarternion line bundles, connections, curvature, Sobolev spaces, Fredholm operators, the Sard-Smale theorem, the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, etc.) along the way. The proof is largely complete, with a proof of Uhlenbeck's gauge fixing lemma and some concluding details from one of Donaldson's papers being the most notable omissions.

The easiest way to evaluate this book is to compare it to F&U. First of all, it is written at a little higher level, assuming the reader to be more confortable with, e.g., principal bundles or K-theory. The Sobolev inequalities and multiplication theorems are given, but not much time is spent explaining them. Lawson's proof of orientability is a bit different, more abstract but maybe a little easier, while the Sard-Smale theorem is here applied to perturbations of the equations rather than the metrics, as Uhlenbeck's generic metrics theorem had only just been announced when this book was written. (The generic metrics theorem of Uhlenbeck is one of the unique features in the SU(2) YM theory that is lacking in, say, Seiberg-Witten theory, but Lawson's perturbation method is more generally applicable.) The proofs of Taubes's existence theorem are similar, but Lawson makes fewer mistakes, although he messes up the inequalities and choices of constants sometimes, too. (Everyone who writes these sorts of proofs seems to do this - F&U, Lawson, Donaldson, even Taubes himself; they're very tedious.)

Both books begin with the classification of simply connected 4-manifolds and symmetric bilinear forms, as well as a construction of a fake R^4, i.e., a manifold that is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to R^4, but I prefer Lawson's treatment, which for the classification emphasizes the similarities with the 2-dimensional case. F&U, however, also include a chapter on Fintushel & Stern's SO(3) theory, which Lawson doesn't, but which is found in Petrie & Randall's Connections, Definite Forms, and Four-manifolds. Neither Lawson nor F&U (or P&R) treat Donaldson invariants, since they were discovered several years later, and both still work with self-dual rather than anti-self dual connections, but in the 2nd edition of F&U, released in 1991, these developments were at least mentioned.

There are a number of mistakes with signs, factors of 2, missing or reversed subscripts and superscripts, C instead of H in eqn. II.8.6, "=" instead of "+" in eqn. III.2.3, etc., which seems about par for gauge theory books. The most serious errors are in the description of instantons on the 4-sphere on pp. 13 and 45 (cf. AHS's paper), the omission of the word "reducible" from Prop. IV.3.3, the word "minimum" instead of "maximum" twice on p. 70, and, as already noted, a number of errors in the choice of constants, order of fixing parameters, and inequalities in Chapter VI, especially the statement of Lemma 1.8. Fortunately, all of these problems are surmountable, and in fact F&U is probably worse in this regard.

All in all, this book could serve as a good introduction to Donaldson theory if F&U is unavailable or to be read concurrently and if the reader has a good background in spin geometry and nonlinear analysis. But it is only an introduction, since it doesn't cover the invariants themselves, probably the most important part of the theory (cf. Donaldson & Kronheimer's The Geometry of Four-Manifolds, the seminal work in the field). Moreover, Donaldson theory itself has fallen out of favor since Seiberg-Witten gauge theory can reproduce the same results much more easily (cf. Morgan's The Seiberg-Witten Equations and Applications to the Topology of Smooth Four-Manifolds. or Nicolaescu's Notes on Seiberg-Witten Theory). ... Read more
