Excerpt: Akraberg is the southern tip of Suðuroy, 5 km south from the village Sumba, Faroe Islands. The name Akraberg derives from akur (cereal field). Five kilometres south of Akraberg is the southernmost point of The Faroe Islands, a rock called Munkurin (The Monk), which is one of a group of four rocks. This group of rocks are called Flesjarnar. The sound between Suðuroy and Munkurin is notorious for its strong current, it is called Røstin, the poet Poul F. Joensen (born 1898, died 1970) mentioned it in one of his poems "...Røstin rísin rann...". In 1909, a lighthouse and some family houses were built in Akraberg. Today, there are only two houses and a lighthouse, but there are no inhabitants. The last family who lived there was the lighthouse keeper Hans Petur Kjærbo and his family. They lived there during a terrible hurricane in December 1988, which later has been called The Christmas Hurricane. Luckily the house was very strong built and didn't get blasted away by the strong wind. But much damage had been done on their car, the soil and parts of the house; a window was blown out. Much damage happened in the Faroe Islands that night, many houses were blasted away by the hurricane. After that the lighthouse keeper and his family moved away from Akraberg, and nobody has lived there since then, except for tourists who rent one of the two houses there. The lighthouse is now automatic, but it needs attention regularly. Hans Petur Kjærbo is still a lighthouse keeper, but now he workes not only in Akraberg but also attends most of the other lighthouses in the Faroe Islands. Excerpt: Heðin Brú (pronounced ; August 17, 1901 in Skálavík-May 18, 1987 in Tórshavn) was the penname of Hans Jacob Jacobsen, a Faroese novelist and translator. Heðin Brú is considered to be the most important Faroese writer of his generation and is known for his fresh and ironic style. His novel, Feðgar á ferð (The Old Man and His Sons), was chosen as the Book of the twentieth century by the Faroese. Like many of his countrymen, Jacobsen worked as a fisherman in his early years. After two seasons, he left to study agriculture in Denmark. When he returned to the Faroes, he worked as an agricultural advisora job that took him to all parts of the country. The contacts he made with ordinary village people he met during this time had a lasting effect on his writing. In 1930, his first novel, Lognbrá, which tells the story of a young man growing up in a Faroese village, was published. In 1935, its sequel, Fastatøkur, in which the young man works as a fisherman on a sloop, followed. Both of these books were translated into Danish in 1946 and published under the title Høgni. Heðin Brú Memorial in his hometown of SkálavíkFeðgar á ferð, Brú's most famous work, was published in Faroese in 1940, in Danish in 1962 (Fattigmandsære), in German in 1966 (Des armen Mannes Ehre, a translation of the Danish title), and in English in 1970 under the title of The Old Man and his Sons. The privilege of knowing the cold places

Interests in Victorian Age travel was not only confined to Britain but also to Europe in general and North America in particular.
The travel essays of a Victorian Lady were begun by Elizabeth Taylor in 1886 and ended with a total of 39 articles.This book
has many.She wrote for the London Globe, Atlantic Monthly,
New York Herald, Fishing Gazette (London), Popular Science Monthly,
Forest and Stream plus other magazines.

She was enthralled with the northern climates: the people and
the countrysides.Her descriptive essays are priceless to be sure.

Upon reading, you wont shiver because of the cold but, rather
come away with warm memories!

Excellent book
This is an excellent book for all of us who are in love with the Faroe Islands and/or Iceland. Elisabeth Taylor has a nice and easy language and one really gets involved in the everyday life that she describes in the book. Recommended to everyone who is interested in understanding the history of Faroe Islands and Iceland as well as some of their traditions.

Intriguing travel in sub-Arctica by a fascinating woman
Elizabeth Taylor, one of those indomitable Victorian women who hiked their skirts and explored where even tough moderns would pause, faced the wilds of northern Canada and of the Faroe Islands. The miserable weather etched the inhabitants but didn't faze our guide.

Taylor was neither a sentimentalist nor a cynic but saw clearly and wrote straight.Trained as an artist and enamored of nature--especially birds and flowers--Taylor appreciated people who lived closest to her beloved surroundings.By her account, they responded to her interest by inviting her to share their hard-bitten lives and without pretense, she accepted their invitations.

Taylor financed her economic travels by writing for middle class magazines, like Frank Leslie's, and for outdoors magazines where a female byline was a rarity.These essays come from those published pieces and some journals archived in her hometown, Minneapolis.A descendent has assembled the collection, but the task had real literary and cultural value that counts for much more than familial duty.
