5-0 out of 5 stars Textiles made interesting and easy!
I found this a very useful guide to textiles as it tackles the subject in an easy, straightforward and practical way. It contains everything you could need to know about textiles, fibres and fabrics, colours and design, and also includes sections about the construction techniques, processes, and surface treatments of textiles.
This volume opens with a brief history of the subject. I think this is a very interesting feature, particularly because of the easy and engaging way in which it's written, always accompanied by lots of illustrations and pictures. The introduction begins with the development of textiles and textile designs from 1600 onwards and goes through the changes in pattern and quality before and after the industrial revolution. It then moves on to the creation of new materials such as Nylon, Spandex and Polyester, to the everyday use of jeans.
Since this is a basic `how-to' book, its main and best features are its practicality and the large amount of examples provided with straight-to-the-point text. Concepts such as the principles of textile design are presented in a short, yet detailed way, which allows a clear understanding of the first steps in the planning and designing of textiles. I was surprised on how many things have to be taken into consideration when approaching this subject, but this book takes you through the process step by step, illustrating how to research for ideas - reinventing the `classics' or simply experimenting with new patterns - express the design and create a market for your own textile.
Scale, colour palette, pattern and repeat, placement, surface, texture and weight are only few of the main subjects covered in the various sections of the book, which also offers an accessible and comprehensive description of other topics which range from the importance of the specific qualities and characteristics of fibres, to the main kinds of fabric constructions and surface treatments.
I'd personally suggest this book to anybody interested in this subject, because it condenses lots of useful, practical information into a limited number of pages and gives great, concrete examples and tips to design your own textiles.

Product Description
Digital Textile Design covers everything students and practitioners of textile design will need to learn about designing and printing digitally.

Textile designers are beginning to realize the creative potential of digital textile design and are fast catching up with graphic designers who have taken to working digitally. New digital textile-printing technology is enabling designers to work with an almost unlimited palette of colors to produce work of staggering detail in relatively short timescales.

Written specifically for textile designers, Digital Textile Design provides the know-how for students and professionals who wish to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as design tools. A series of inspirational tutorials, presented in step-by-step format, guide the reader through the process of creating designs that will be suited to both the traditional textile production process, and to the new industry of digital printing onto fabric.

Against the backdrop of the development of digital print, the book discusses how designers can access this new technique, looks at the work of those currently exploring its possibilities, and also features the craft of embellishment that is being used to offset the apparent flatness of print. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This is a waste of money. The print quality is low and there is nothing innovative about it at all. A complete joke of a book... don't waste your time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loads of Industry Information!
This book contains a plethora of wonderful information ranging from current and future textile industry printing techniques and technical knowledge, to a range of Photoshop and Illustrator tutorials with a focus on creating textile patterns.

It a must read for anyone interested in the textile industry, printing techniques and wants to learn how to put patterns into repeat in Photoshop and Illustrator. I would recommend though that you have a standard knowledge of Illustrator and Photoshop in order to follow along with the tutorials. For more experienced Textile Designers who currently work in these programs and in the industry, the tutorials will likely be things you already know. There is however so much wonderful industry information, that I found it quite engaging, and learned quite a bit, even with being in the industry for over 10 years.

Below is more in-depth information regarding what's inside in order to help you decide if it is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Anyone Interested in Producing Printed Fabric.
Thanks to the emergence of digital textile printing (DTP), we've all been granted access to world that was previously accessible to a few. Some people have opened the door and peeked in, but are too scared to jump in and explore. Some have jumped in, but failed to negotiate the new language and technology, and have left disappointed. Some are fully in, but are sticking to old-world customs and not exploring what the new world has to offer.

The book Digital Textile Design by Melanie Bowles and Ceri Isaac is your road map -- your Rick Steves<, perhaps?! -- to this world. For our timid first-timer, it offers basic tutorials for creating motifs, color palettes, and repeats in both Photoshop and Illustrator. Our disappointed experimenter might be encouraged to try again after reading about the more technical aspects of the process (like color management), which are presented in a manner accessible to the layperson. And our enthusastic adopter (along with everyone else) will be inspired by the multitude of images from fashion and interior designers who are fully embracing the endless color and scale possibilities that digital printing has to offer.

In fact, anyone interested in textiles, whether or not they plan on ever using DTP themselves, will find this book valuable. Most of the 23 tutorials (listed in detail after the jump) are applicable to pattern design in general, not matter your end use. Experienced textile designers may find the tutorials too basic, but there is still plenty to learn from the artist profiles and overview of the state of the art and technology of DTP. There is even a section about how artists and crafters are combining DTP with traditional surface design methods (handpainting, screenprinting, resist dyeing, burnout, flocking, embellishment) to bring hand-rendered touches to this mechanical process. The only thing I was hoping for that I didn't find was specifics on how to ensure your fabrics turn out with the colors you're expecting, but that makes sense since each printing service has different methods and requirements. Also, this book was written mostly for students who typically have access to a university-owned printer; lower-cost DTP services like Spoonflower, Karma Kraft, Eye Candey, and Fabric on Demand were just emerging as this book was published.

You can preview several sample pages on the Laurence King website, and even more on co-author Melanie Bowles' site. While you're there, check out her beautiful digital shibori work -- she also recently launched a blog, Make It Digital.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not written by fashion insider
I'm currently thinking about starting my own clothing line, with the goal of having my line sold at upscale boutiques and better department stores. After reading the reviews of other similar books, I decided to buy this one because it came with a CD with an editable business plan. While that is a plus, this book provides only the basics for starting a fashion business, with some references to further research you should do on your own. For my goal, the major downside to this book is that it was not written by a fashion insider who has actually created a commercially successful fashion clothing line. According to the author biography, the author is a marketing consultant. My definition of a commercially successful fashion clothing line is having multi-million dollar purchase orders from all the major department stores. Although the book provides case studies of people who have started their own clothing lines, the case studies are of brands that are local brands that are not recognized nationally. After reading this book, I feel that I need to buy other books on the same topic for more insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help for Learning the Basics
We got this for our teenage daughter to learn the beginning steps of fashion design.I think for the reviewers who said it was too basic for them, they may be more advanced, but for beginners this is a lot of foundational groundwork to learn about drawing bodies and clothing. Each page shows drawings/ sketches, and explains the technique and how to learn to draw QUICKLY as a fashion designer presenting ideas, not just a casual sketcher.

I would recommend this for high school age and above as a first book to try out their talents and learn some of the basics. For an introduction to fashion design it is a huge and detailed volume. It covers enough of the business side of fashion design that it can help a person decide if the career would really interest them.Well worth the price!

5-0 out of 5 stars loved this book
this is great for drawing different type of figures,
many different facial profiles and ideas for hair too

5-0 out of 5 stars great for novice and up
I bought this book in order to help me with a Principles of Design class. It was mostly a sketching class and the book helps the student understand how the body is divided when it comes to drawing fashion and croquis. Overall, I think its a fantastic book because it also includes how to draw faces, eyes, hands, etc as well as how textures are drawn and comes with a few color sketches and ideas to get you started. The rest is up to your own imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for
This is a great book.It is exactly what I was looking for.It demonstrates how to draw the body, face, poses and fashions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures
I got this book and was not thrilled. It has some nice pictures, but they don't teach much about drawing. There is also nudity for no real reason. Some of the illustrations look more pin-up than fashion. I find most of the illustrations very short waisted. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic.
This book is very well-put together, with thorough but succinct information on the evolution/variation of the style through the Twenties. I love the picture references: a mix of gorgeous artwork from the likes of George Barbier (essential to the period and one of the best illustrators of all time), photographs of some of the period's lovely, lovely fashionable ladies (models, socialites, starlets), as well as just great photographs (in color) of some stunning costumes from the V&A's collection.

Note that the book does indeed focus exclusively on Art Deco of the 1920s, so if you're looking for an edition on the full span of the movement, look elsewhere. (However, even so I recommend eventually adding this one to your library -- it's a great quick reference!)

4-0 out of 5 stars A visually beautiful small book on Art Deco costume
This book is not about Art Deco as an art movement, but rather instead concentrates on how the Art Deco ascetic impacted on fashion. The book gives you an overview of the background of Art Deco and then progresses through in sections with brief biographies of the better known fashion designers of the period including people such as: Poiret, Lanvin, Vionnet, Channel and the various Russian designers in Paris in the period. The emphasis is on Parisienne fashion rather than what was produced during the period in London or New York.

While only a small book this is nevertheless a lovely reference for fashion from c1912 to 1930.It is packed with images of costumes from various museums, reproductions of fashion plates and photos. If you love art deco fashion this book is a visual feast though it probably couldn't be used as a reference book because the depth of the designer biographies are only designed to give an introduction to the area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
I don't like most of the clothes in stores these day so I make my own. I found this book inspirational in creating designs that flatter my "ultra-feminine" middle aged figure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute little book
This is a cute little book with excellent pictures, but it left me wanting more. Many chapters are only two facing pages, and I would have liked to have seen more examples of each of the subjects.

I appreciate this book because books on Arts and Crafts Textiles are few and far between. However, I would have loved to spend a lot more money and gotten a much more comprehensive book!I want more pictures--hoards ofthem--of textiles from the collections of zillions of people and museums. This book whets the appetite, but leaves room for more. It is a good quickintroduction. Now I need something with lots of meat.

This exuberant collection celebrates the way in which astonishing new textile technology is bringing together fashion, design, engineering, and science. Synthetics are now much more than cheap substitutes for natural fibers: they feel good, perform well, and look out of this world--literally. Smart textiles are no longer a science-fiction fantasy; here are self-cleaning carpets and anti-insomniac microfibers. Engineered textiles combine fabric with glass, ceramics, metal, or carbon to produce lightweight hybrids with incredible properties. Sophisticated finishes, such as silicone coatings and holographic laminates, transform color, texture, and even form. The book is illustrated throughout with the work of leading designers in the USA, Europe, and Japan: Issey Miyake, Donna Karan, Helmut Lang, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garons, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, and many more. A comprehensive reference section includes biographies of artists, makers, and developers; explanations of technical terms; a directory of suppliers; a full bibliography; and information on where to see contemporary textiles. ... I love this book. It is super visual and has so many crazy textiles and designs. These books are great for inspiration for design.

3-0 out of 5 stars Techno-riffic
This book was a well thought out and planned introduction to the world of technical/synthetic fabrics. The definitions, classifications, and examples of usage make for an interesting read. Equally exciting are thechapters on engineering, synthetics, and coatings. The designs and photosare avant-garde with references to the top designers who of course are thefirst to try new things. It is well organized and easy to use as areference manual.Techno would be well situated on the bookshelf of everycutting-edge design and production team. However, based on my 15 years ofexperience in the fashion-forward streetwear scene, I would have expectedto find listed the company Decopap Inc of Montreal Canada, which has beenthe leading source of Vinyl coated fabrics to the streetwear, fetish, andtechno crowd for the last 30 years. This one omission aside, the book istruly a valuable source for the textile industry. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Thought it would be better
I got this book for a digital surface design class that I am taking. I thought that it would be a really cool book and I had actually flipped through it once. Yet when I got it, I was a little dissapointed. The author does not carry her thoughts well from one paragraph to another. I feel like she uses big words that she might not necessarily understand completely...oh and there is a missing page :(

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT

4-0 out of 5 stars Fashion Design
I wish I had read this in High School before going to college. A very thourough overview of the Fashion industry as well as what to expect in college as a Fashion student. She is British so many of her references are UK based but she does cover the US as well as France in most of her references and additional sources so a good place to start. I reccommend this for anyone looking to go into Fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interested in Fashion Design?
Then read this book first!

Sue Jenkyn Jones provides a good end-to-end overview of the Fashion Design Business. From this book, you will get an good idea of what talents and requirements are needed to be a Fashion Designer.Covered in this book are the business aspects, fashion cycles, textiles, manufacturing, sketching, patternmaking, CAD for designers, colors, sewing, and much MUCH more.

Each topic is explored enough to get slughtly further than the basic concept but not thoroughly covered.I do not think it is possible to completely explore everything on Fashion Design in one book.It is a great introduction to see if it something suitable for yourself or if you are seeking out an overview of the design business. The book is generously packed with graphical examples, sketches, charts, and runway photos.

1-0 out of 5 stars Central Saint Martins wants you to go to college. . .
preferably theirs. This book reveals very little about fashion design or the buisness. It is full of a lot of general information much like you would find in one of those late night tv, or print ads, telling you that you may have what it takes to "become a serious artist." Because of course then you are interested and will pay them money. This book works in much the same way. It is a teaser published by Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Now had they given me this book, say. . . at my orientation, i probably would have appreciated it. However I was rather disappointed when I realized that I had just paid $30 at SFMOMA for an advertisement from CSM.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for fashion design students and fashion lovers
After a serious college business education and a few years in the workforce, I made a courageous decision to enter fashion school. The best decision I've made, but like everyone else I sometimes stress out over what I've gotten myself into.Sue Jenkyn's book is always on my cofee table because it calms me down by clarifying in simple terms what I'm studying and why. This book offers an opportunity to step back and look at the big picture of fashion today.

This book offers a taste of everything - she has a wonderful chart of the fashion calendar and another of the fashion cycle. The info in this book incorporates vital lessons from maybe 10 expensive textbooks I own and have studied. The pictures taken of students in fashion school and sectors of the industry are my favorite.Until you are in fashion school or the industry, this book is the best way for you to see what happens behind closed doors. The more I learn in fashion school, the more familiar and enlightening this book becomes.

4-0 out of 5 stars For people interested in Fashion Design
I purchased this book on amazon.com at a very reasonable price and was very pleased with my purchase. For under $20 this book provided me with the information I was looking for. I recommend it to anyone, especially students interested in majoring in Fashion Design in college. This book explains the basics of what majoring in Fashion Design requires, and goes into describing the what, when, where, and why of what being a Fashion student involves. I really enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot! ... Read more
