4-0 out of 5 stars Paper Dolls
These paper dolls are so beautiful that I hesitate cutting them out to use as paper dolls. They are not the punch out type. They will have to be cut out by hand. I am planning on using an x-acto knife. The dresses are very elaborate and will be a tough job to cut out for an adult. I hope my granddaughter appreciates the effort.

The paper is very heavy which is great for the dresses. I intend to put the ladies on heavy cardboard to make them more durable. These are too beautiful not to make them last as long as possible. The colors are vibrant. There is a nice variety of clothing options.

Once I cut them out, I intend to secure them in page jackets to store them. I will reproduce the "book" by using the cover and back as the booklet jacket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Detailed!
I love this paper doll set! I own several of Mr. Tierney's paper doll collections but this is probably my favorite. The dolls of Queen Victoria and Empress Eugenie wonderfully dressed in undergarments accurate from the time period and their positions of their limbs allow the costume figures to hold fans and other accessories and allow them to put their arms in different positions without revealing anything of the original doll beneath. One thing about these dolls is that they are shorter than most and that wouldn't be a problem except that it makes it harder to play with them with other paper dolls of a larger size. The clothers are lovely and EXTREMELY detailed making them beautiful but difficult to cut out especially for younger girls. Each gown is unique and Tom Tierney uses a variety of different styles and shows styles throughout a period of sixty-four years. Each doll has 13 essembles with a total of 26 essembles in the book. On the paper dolls the artist also depicts the hairstyles and headware of the time. It's hard to cut out the space where there is an empty gap for a hole for the dolls face to show through. This would be a great selection for anybody who enjoys Tom Tierney's quality work or just anyone who likes paper dolls!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality and fun dolls...
This is the second paper doll book that I have from this author.Good quality printing and beautiful dolls.I am no expert on that era of fashion but the dolls are certainly a lot of fun and very well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I love a lot of these books and when I add another one its such a treat..Once again..fine quality.good paper quality, fine coloring.I use them in paperdoll/altered art ,and decoupage.they are perfect for my needs..B.W.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious Excess
Tom Tierney's illustrations cover a 60 year time span when what we would consider "too much", was never enough when it came to embellishing the clothing of a fashionable woman. As eye candy, this is excellent. As a reference, this book is very helpful in establishing the lines and silhouettes of the various decades. As always, the colors are brilliant and the styles are faithfully rendered.

The source of most of these illustrations are famous portraits, magazines of the day, and later photographs of fashionable women. Charles Frederick Worth started the practice of showing clothing on real people, as opposed to miniature costumes worn by fashion dolls, and his work is generously represented, along with a number of other designers, all of whom might have been overlooked by a lesser researcher than Mr. Tierney.

Since there are a multitude of refernces including printed and photographic material that cover the 1890s, I can understand why those fashions would merit an entire book of their own, so I am not troubled by the absence of the decade of the 1890s.

This book serves to provide an excellent overview of how womens' clothing evolved during the Victorian Era all the way up until 1900. ... Read more

Product Description
Flats, or technical drawings, are essential for anyone working in the fashion industry. Used to convey design ideas and garment details to pattern cutters and machinists, it is essential that they are drawn accurately to avoid misunderstanding and costly mistakes in sampling and production.

Flats: Technical Drawing for Fashion explains how to create a technical fashion drawing using a simple and straightforward step-by-step method accompanied by some time-saving tips. This method is explained for those who wish to use Adobe Illustrator as well as for those who prefer to draw by hand.

The second part of the book presents over 400 technical drawings of garment types, styles, and construction details, the basic key shapes of which are shown alongside a specially created and photographed muslin. Accompanying each illustration is a list of all the terms by which that garment is known. This unique presentation illustrates the relationship between the three-dimensional garment and the two-dimensional drawing, allowing readers to really understand how to render technical drawings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book about drawing flats
This is an easy book to use and understand. Good reference for anyone who is designing clothing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough detail or examples
This book is a useful tool, but the step by step section is extremely limited. There are not enough instructions, the images aren't clear, and there is only one hand-drawn example. If you have no prior technical drawing experience, you'll struggle to learn with just this book. And although the drawings at the back make for a useful "index of shapes", there are not enough of them, and many key shapes are left out. 9 Heads by Nancy Reigelman is a better bet for technical drawing, even though there is no step by step, there are far more examples of shapes.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource!
A great tool for students and professionals, this book is complete yet concise. Includes hand-drawing techniques as well as Illustrator instruction. Flats are shown next to finished garments to better understand how your sketch translates to 3d. You have all the basic garment shapes but also a visual dictionary of variations that I find can be inspiring for new designs. There is written instruction, but it is also very visual which is great for creative types like myself!

The CD-Rom is the icing on the cake: It includes body and garment templates that can be manipulated in Illustrator - a priceless, time-saving resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars authors note
I have tried to demystify the 'art' of technical drawing in this book. It's really not difficult, if you follow my step by step technique. The back section of the book is incredibly useful, as it contains clear drawings of key generic styles - its a visual dictionary of clothes.
The drawings here are not 'fashionable' - they are stripped of all 'fashion' content, therefore serve as an indicator of generic style names.
Once you have mastered the skill of 'drawing' in half and are familiar with a basic fashion vocabulary - you may steam ahead and work in this flat format to design anything you want....
A combination of draping on the stand, pattern cutting and an ability to draw flats is vital to arm you with the key skills you will need to succeed in our competitive industry today.
Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars review on fashion design and product development by carr and
I think that the book is excellent in terms of its coverage in the various areas of fashion product development. In fact I can say it is the only book that covers all the relevant areas of fashion product development in a logical fashion. It starts with concept of fashion and design and how it translates all the way through to garment production and marketing. It uses simple language and very practical examples, which will be clearly understood, not only by people working in the garment industry but also by lay persons. It is an excellent book for graduating fashion designers that are seeking jobs in the retail sector. It will give them a true picture of the behind the scenes. It also broaches on areas like hierarchy and the flow of the design process. It will also give a clear guideline to graduates where they want to position themselves in the industry. Overall I cannot find any shortcomings in the book, except it is a little sketchy on the points where garment production takes place abroad in developing nations in the East. More elaboration on this would bring it closer to the real workings of the garment trade today. ... Read more

Product Description
An interactive coloring book for fashionistas of all ages, My Wonderful World of Fashion is packed with beautiful and sophisticated illustrations specially created by the leading fashion-illustrator Nina Chakrabarti.

The book encourages creativity, with illustrations to color in and designs to finish off, as well as simple ideas for making and doing (how to make a sari, turn a napkin into a headscarf, dye a T-shirt, and so on). Covering clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry, and other accessories, the illustrations span both vintage fashions drawing on beautiful and interesting objects from past ages and contemporary designs from the illustrator's own imagination.

'Did you know...?' features that give brief historical notes encourage children to be inspired by history and by other cultures. A wonderful celebration of fashion, the book will appeal to fashion addicts from 8 years plus. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best for Teenagers
I took one look and realized this is best for group other than me - teenagers.I love books on fashion, but I prefer pictures of outfits from which I can draw inspiration to style my clothes. This is something different, but a great idea. Like another reviewer said it is part coloring book, part book of suggestions. It can really inspire a new generation of designers or just be a book for fun. I think any child interested in fashion will really appreciate it.

4-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULLY CREATIVE
I love this book as much as I initially thought I would. It leaves so much room for your own personalization and creativity. It's perfect for that bubbling fashionista, or a totally experienced glamour girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it, everyone!
This book is amazing, I really love it and I can spend hours on it. I'm very happy that I bought this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, creativity, and color!
Okay, so this isn't exactly my area, but here's what my wife had to say:

"Awesome book--so much fun! It's a world of buttons, shoes, stockings, nails, necklaces, masks, gloves, and more, and it's all waiting for your artistic touch. Color, doodle, and design for hours of fun. I like to color the most, and there are lots of opportunities to color in Nina Chakrabarti's cool designs, but you can design your own stuff, too, perhaps using Chakrabarti's for inspiration (if, like me, you don't exactly feel like you're the most creative fashionista on the planet)."

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets creative juices flowing
This book is perfect for young girls with a fashion bent, full of artsy projects. It is meant to be used, so it's like a combo book and sketchbook/scrapbook. The hand-drawn look complements the projects perfectly. The topics are open-ended and leave lots of room for a girl's individual ideas and creativity to bloom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Could not ask for more! Brilliant!
I have always been a huge fan of Tom Tierneys ever since being given some of his paper dolls for Christmas one year and needless to say, it inspired me to pursue a career in fashion illustration. He can make satin look like satin, lace look like lace and furs look like fur. Its really impressive in doll form and even better in these great included cds!!! A must have for anyone who is a fan of the history of costume and design. I really wish he had one with even more modern fashions!

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource book for writers and graphic artists
This book and CD is another in the line of great royalty free works of images. This time, it's fashions from the great designers of women's wear 1950-2000, ranging from everyday wear to evening gowns.

These Dover book/CD ROMs are a graphic designers delight. It's so hard to find good quality graphics that are royalty free, and not end up spending a fortune. Dover has a good selection of royal free images that are presented in a book and are on CD ROM.

The images in the CD ROM is in full colour and so dazzling. 140 large images in TIFF format. Sharp images ready to use. Great for Paint Shop PRO. You don't have to scan, the images are there. You don't have to install some program. Just open them from you CR Rom Drive.

Great resources for writers looking for 50's, 60's and 70's fashions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Renderin Fashion, Fabric and Prints with Adobe Photoshop
I have found this book to be very informative and easy to follow for a beginning student of fabric design. Photoshop has so many applications and the author of this book really streamlined the information to apply directly to what I need to learn regarding fashion/ design applications. I refer to it constantly.

2-0 out of 5 stars A BIG MESS!
Absolutely not worth the price it is being sold for. i agree with other reviewers that half of the information is totally not required.Plus the CD's are a mess as half of your time is wasted in searching the relative images in the CD for the excercises and some of them are completely missing!!! I could not render half of the fabrics as per the instructions since as they are very unspecific & confusing. So many pages have been wasted in giving a brief of textiles which is a different subject altogether and the one who would want to use this book has to be thorough with textiles. The information on textiles also is too brief & confusing.Aslo there were too many examples & mini biographies of people who are successful CAD/Textile designers which was totally not required.I hopped & jumped & skipped throughout the book expecting something useful but in vain.I finally gave up and returned it.Please do not waste money on this book.I really would like someone to come up with a more specific and useful book for using such important softwares like Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop specifically for rendering fashion as I desperately want to learn this. I expected that this book would be a good substitute (as this is the only book i hv found till now that uses photoshop to render textiles) for the highly expensive CAD courses here in NY. But unfortunately i was thouroughly disappointed. Can someone please suggest me any other good books related to Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop for rendering fashion, textiles & prints?????Suggestions are welcome - nins25@gmail.com

3-0 out of 5 stars a necessary evil
this is one of only two refrences currently avlaible on the subject. (a third is coming soon)
there are a lot of editing problems, and missing files. extremly frustrating when you are trying to work thorugh the exercises.
but, i took the basics that it offered and ran with it.

it is a pricy book, but i would recommend it (as it's cheaper then the other book available) as of now, and seen the new book. hopefully a new addition will be released minus the mistakes. so that it can be more useful refrence for those of us intrested in this subject.

i'd also like to see some information on advanced techniques. and more info on using a drawing tablet.

the title is also misleading, as all you learn is how to render textiles.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic Instruction NOT Inspiration
This book should have been 1/2 the size and 1/2 the price.I nearly returned it, but since there are so few instructional books on Photoshop geared towards textile/surface design available on the market, I stuck it out.
I'd throw out half the content.Too much text is spent explaining the textile industry. While it is important to understand the textile trade/printing process, that's not what I wanted when I bought this book.Much of the book focuses on "Basic Design" principles, putting together a portofolio, presentation boards, the future of digital printing etc... like a Textile Design 101 class. Some people might find this helpful ... I found it infuriating.
This book is NOT about inspiration. The exercises are drab, the illustrations and sample files are plain and artless.Sometimes key information about where to look for tools is missing or mis-labeled.One section refers to a Demo plug-in to use, but it doesn't name the plug-in and there are no plug-ins found on the CD.There are product placement "advertisements" that annoy me.And the author assumes from the get-go that the "student" has access to a flatbed scanner and other expensive hardware;clearly a textbook geared towards a shared studio/lab classroom situation.
The CD is a disaster.NONE of the file folders or names referenced in the text relate to the CD content. Most of the files are there, but not in any logical order and with different file names. When the author references a file in an exercise, you can spend more time looking for the file than actually performing the exercise. There are multiple copies of some files and it's missing other files altogether.Chapter 3 is the first chapter where exercises with CD files begin, but the Chapter 3 folder is empty! There are tons of images of "Student" work that is completely uninspired and seems more like a way to get the author's favorite student "published".
This is an unsophisticated and horribly uninspired text.I kept it because there is so little available geared towards textile design.
My background is in Fine Arts with an advanced understanding of textiles including weaving, sewing, handprinting textiles and traditional croquis painting.I am very computer literate and am not afraid of software.I've never been able to merge my hands on painting etc to the digital realm and have been looking for instructional aids to help with that. I had high expectations and wanted a fairly sophisticated reference book.I feel like I'm sifting through a lot of chaff for a meager meal.I guess I'm hungry.
I'm determined to break through to learn to utilize a very sophisticated product (Photoshop) for my needs.I'll get my inspiration elsewhere. I gave this book 2 stars only because there is some value in working through the exercises which are specifically geared towards pattern and textile design.
>If you are looking for inspiration, don't buy this book.
>If you know you'll be dissuaded and frustrated by disorganized and missing references to files and tools - don't buy this book.
>If you're new to design and don't understand textiles, I'm not sure you will be well-served by the presentation of the "Basics".
>If you buy this book, glean what you can and ignore the discouraging mediocrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!
Excellent Textile and Fashion Textbook
A must buy for anyone in the textile or fashion industries. Beginners will find all the info they need to begin a career in fashion textiles and advanced users of textile cad will find techniques to solve many fabric related issues of CAD design.

The book has been fantastic insight to using Photoshop as textile design software. The enclosed CD has many easy to follow examples that are outlined in the text and a second CD has a 30 day evaluation version of Photoshop.

The portfolio and resume tipsalone are well worth the $60!

students with inspiration and guidance to make their own patterns for tailored jackets, which they will then execute using contemporary tailoring techniques that the book will also outline. Fashion illustrations will show students the many silhouettes that the tailored jacket can take-from formal and elegant to causal and sporty-for both men and women. Basic jacket blocks will be included with instructions on how to manipulate details within the patterns to achieve a whole new look. Profiles of professional designers who incorporate tailoring into their collections will further highlight the important place that the technique of tailoring continues to hold in today's fashion industry. Students will learn to consider tailoring as a design element, rather than just a method of garment assembly. As a result, they'll begin to appreciate tailoring as a viable skill that not only displays their ability to put garments together, but also showcases their creativity as designers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Engaging Ways to take a ubiquitious onesie from blah to fabulous!
s almost everyone on the planet knows babies go through a LOT of these one piece things called "onesies" when they are new, sweet smelling (most of the time)round armfuls of pure joy. Lets face it too these onesies are really boring and generic unless you shell out big bucks to buy the haute varieties at places that might remind me of Rodeo Drive for infants - you get the idea!

Cathie Filian begins this book with a wonderful dose of the basics - what sizes equate to how many pounds of the most perfect baby alive - things like that. She has an excellent section on dyeing; prepping he fabric to take the dye, mixing the dye (she uses simple cold water packets), how to make more than just one color of dye using only one color packet, and how to care for the garment after it is dyed and before it is worn. Well thought out and well written - this is an excellent section- even for those who may have some experience usingdyes.

What follows are 101 ways to change the dull white look of onesies. There are so many ways that these utilitarian, necessary baby wear can be altered in small, inexpensive ways. Each section in this book offers a very well done set of basics on the particular technique. Who could have thought that there were somany ways to to makes these garments fun?!

Some of the listed ways to alter onesies to suit included in the book are: Dyeing, Painting, Embroidery, Applique, Ribbons and Trims, Iron-Ons, Patches, Cutting, Ripping, Tearing, adding Bling, special holiday motifs and a special section for bathing. There is even a section on how to throw a "snappy Baby Shower". Each section includes approximately 10 ideas for making a special onesie for the cutest little you know. The books has a great section of applique and stencil like design so that you don't have to start from the beginning.

I was not sure what I would think of this book when I had a look at it because I am not around babies much but I have to say that I was, simply fascinated and wowed by the great ideas in this book. This is a book that will appeal to mother's of infants of course, but also to friends and relatives of babies. It's a fun book, crammed with information and ideas. This is one well thought out book that is really sure to please all of us who love babies - babies who are stylin' !

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but I was a little disappointed.
I really liked a couple of the ideas I had seen in this book and why I bought it - but I didn't get as many new ideas as I was hoping.Totally personal preference though b/c I'm not into some of the stamping and such, was looking more for applique ideas. The tutu onesie is adorable and there are definitely a handful of good ideas - not 101 great ideas like I was hoping for and the instructions aren't super detailed as I need, but it has some good ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Endless Possibilities!
How exciting! I love this book. I have so many friends who are expecting in the next few months and I can't wait to try out these awesome ideas for onesies and use them as gifts! I can't decide which one to use first. Love all the ideas....what a great resource.

Product Description
Globalization dramatically changed the way business is conducted in the apparel manufacturing
industry. In many cases, these changes came with little regard to social responsibility
in the design, production, and sourcing of products. Social Responsibility in the Global
Apparel Industry combines a broad analysis of apparel manufacturing with a discussion of
how social responsibility can influence corporate strategy and decisions made throughout
the global supply chain. Students learn how leading apparel and footwear manufacturers
attempt to solve complex problems at all stages of the apparel manufacturing process,
including child labor, harassment and abuse, discrimination, excessive hours of work, low
wages, and poor factory health and safety. Drawing on their experience in industry and
research, the authors provide the tools to change the apparel industry from the inside out
by preparing the next generation and current industry professionals with the awareness,
knowledge, and passion to make it more socially responsible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book shows why ERTE` was so popular....
This book shows why ERTE` was so admired and so popular during the 1920's-1930's and beyond.

I have always wanted to see ERTE's drawings from Harper`s because those drawings are what ERTE` was (and is)known for. Well, this large paperback book introduces the reader to some of the exciting and creative designs that ERTE` created and printed in HARPER'S BAZAAR during the 1920's and 1930's.

"WOW", is the word I have to apply to the Harper's drawings created by ERTE`!! His designs were ABSOLUTELY ahead of their time! His designs were completely amazing and creative! Erte's drawings showed the type of clothes worn by famous Hollywood actresses during the 1920-1930's!! (I can visualize Joan Crawford wearing a fabulous Erte` design!)

There are a few colored HARPER`S magazine cover reproductions in the middle of this book, but the black and white line drawings that ERTE` included in the HARPER's magazines are what draws the reader to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quaint text and dynamite illustrations of original fashion
Vogue editor Diana Vreeland once said that no one in the 20th century had a greater influence on fashion than Erte, this desite the fact that he worked for a competitor, Harper's Bazaar. That's an indication of just howrevolutionary his work was for the times. Working with virtually nodirection to blunt his creativity, Erte published paintings and sketches ofingenious fashions that are as playful and lighthearted as they areluxurious and exquisite. He envisioned modern women (from 1915 to 1926) asgoddesses, ultra-chic stars, children of nature, and totally femininecreatures to be adored and exalted. His fashions reflect this, individualistic and charming, colorful and startlingly functional. The 8color covers and many B/W illustrations show insight into a dimension offashion that one normally sees only on the show runways: the never-endingwell of creativity brought to life by a truly inventive mind unhamperedwith concerns of marketability. Peruse the illustrations and noticeallusions to gardens, paper-weaving, architecture, tennis, various membersof the animal kingdom, ceremonial draperies, sailing ships, and flames.Dresses, coats, masks, swimming costumes, sleepwear, and gowns allornamented with beads, fur trim, sheer draperies, corded lacings, silverembroidery, leather and straw. Practical? Not really. Mass manufacturing? Not in a million years. This is extreme fashion, the stuff of couture, suchas would be worn to the salon of writers and intellectuals. Erte loved bestto design for the stage, and the drama and fantasy of theater is inevidence in each ornate illustration. Although for 3 years he produceddesigns for Altman and Bendel in NY, most of his work was strictlyconceptual, and many readers of Harper's saved covers and sketches to museover as they would an art history volume, as evidence of another world.Ignoring fashion trends, Erte generated innovative and outre designs thatstill amaze and delight those of us who appreciate true originality. I'drecommend this book to anyone interested in textile or fashion design, butalso to graphic designers, sculptors, and those who really enjoy art forits own sake. This book is, in one word: luscious. ... Read more
