Product Description

From A.D. 61, when Queen Boudicca - outraged at her treatment at the hands of the Romans - marched on the ten-year-old city and burned it to the ground, London has been hit by wave upon wave of destruction. Disasters such as earthquakes, flood, fire, disease and war have bruised and battered this capital city but London and its people have refused to be overcome.

Many of the key buildings in London stand as monuments to this spirit of tenacity, none more so than St. Paul's cathedral. Burnt down in 604, 1087 and 1665, St. Paul's has also been struck by lightning three times. During the Great Fire of London, class distinctions vanished as King Charles II and his brother, later King James II, took charge of some of the firefighting. Prince Albert did the same during a serious fire at Windsor Castle, proving so effective that everything was under control when the Fire Chief arrived. The London spirit was also prevalent during medieval times when Westminster's Great Hall was flooded frequently - the lawyers continued their work in boats. From Boudicca's attack to the 747 cargo airliner crash at Stansted in 1999, Capital Disasters travels through the centuries and through disasters such as the sinking of paddle steamer the Princess Alice, England's worst ever train crash and the Silvertown explosion of 1917 - the biggest in London's history. The book unearths the human stories behind the tragedies and celebrates the indomitable spirit which rises above all. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the colourful history of this capital city.

I like this series because they help me teach ESOL students to read English while learning American History. This book is very interesting to kids and they can picture what the situation in the factory must have been like.Student often find this story facinating.

3-0 out of 5 stars THE TRIANGLE SHIRTWAIST FACTORY FIRE
Graphic novels have become popular with older children and adults. When publishers target younger readers with graphic non-fiction, the meshing of fact with image results in a format that appeals to today's visually oriented young people. Although invented dialogue and conversation boxes are characteristic of this genre ("AAAAAGH!" "NO!" "RRRIIIPP!"), the book also contains direct quotations clearly identified in the text by yellow backgrounds.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire presents the story of the tragic March 25, 1911 event through the lens of the labor activism that engulfed New York's garment industry at the time. Largely missing from this brief but accurate account is the specific Jewish connection to the labor strife. The actions of Clara Lemlich are appropriately depicted at the union rally which preceded the 1909 garment workers strike, but the author ignores the specifically Jewish nature of the labor activism and the oath taken by the strikers. Although this book is not written from a Jewish perspective, it can serve as a dramatic initial introduction to the event, particularly for reluctant readers. Ages 9-12.Reviewed by Norman H. Finkelstein ... Read more

Product Description
"Not in history has a modern imperial city been so completely destroyed. San Francisco is gone!" Those were the disbelieving words of Jack London, as he surveyed, on April 19, 1906, the devastation of the city by the Golden Gate. The day before, at 5:13 A.M., a powerful earthquake, estimated to be the equivalent of 8.3 on today's Richter scale, had rocked San Francisco for forty-seven seconds, with several aftershocks following in the course of the next half hour. And as the city's residents scrambled fearfully from their beds, they discovered that the colorful and lively town with which they were familiar had indeed disappeared, replaced by an unrecognizable cityscape. Hundreds of buildings had been leveled, thousands more were on the verge of collapse, and here and there fires were already in progress, fires which would eventually grow to rage throughout the ruined town for the next three days.
In this vivid, fast-paced chronicle of what has been called the worst peacetime disaster to ever befall America, veteran journalist and author H. PAUL JEFFERS provides a gripping account of those nightmarish days in April 1906. Drawing on a wide range of eyewitness material, Jeffers follows a variety of individuals as they come to grips with an unthinkable event. Celebrities like Enrico Caruso and John Barrymore; the civil and military authorities who tried to bring order out of chaos; merchants who struggled heroically to save their shops and goods from the ruins and the flames; the suddenly homeless ordinary men and women who composed messages on scraps of paper and sticks of wood to tell of their survival (all of which, incredibly, the Postal Service actually delivered): from all these and many other perspectives Jeffers creates a riveting mosaic of catastrophe and its aftermath. With the one-hundredth anniversary of the quake approaching, this skillful narrative will be of keen interest to readers from West Coast to East. Includes forty-eight black-and-white illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant, readable account of the events
Disaster by the Bay is probably the book you want to read. It's a nice balance between "the facts and nothing but the facts" type and "the gory details type" of book that have begun to appear in celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.

While The Great Earthquake and Firestorms of 1906: How San Francisco Nearly Destroyed Itself by Philip Fradkin is essentially a thorough discussion of the time, including the politics of the period and the environmental effects of the restoration of the city, Disaster by the Bay by H. Paul Jeffers is a clear and concise presentation of the story itself. The former book will probably appeal more to those with an interest in American history, especially of the westward expansion during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Great Earthquake captures the transitional spirit of the turn of the century, a time when the Industrial Revolution was rapidly creating the modern world with which we are familiar but before the Computer Age had transformed it into the comparativelyfuturistic world we occupy today.

Disaster by the Bay, on the other hand, keeps its eye on the main events of the earthquake and fire.Written by a journalist rather than an historian or geologist, the book keeps to a central them.It is a clear, concise, and tightly controlled piece of writing. It documents the story of a large prosperous city that collapses before the forces of nature but manages to show the pluck of the human spirit in adversity. While the author points out the more obvious issues of racism, classism and political graft, he does not stress them any more than a similar author would those that were apparent on the Titanic in the sea disaster that beset a similar segment of the world's population in 1912. As with the Titanic, there were stories of incredible cowardice, opportunism, and self interest, but also stories of bravery, loyalty, duty, and pride. The author documents much of the activity with personal reports of officials, businessmen, military officials and simple people.Even Teddy Roosevelt gets into the story, with his well known personality helping to set the tone of the age during which the events transpired.

An interesting book, more for those interested in a popular account than in a detailed history. Those interested in a more thorough narrative are encouraged to read Fradkin's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Work!
"Not in history has an city been so completely destroyed. San Francisco is gone!" Jack London said as he looked around and at the trashed city. The day before, at 5:13 a.m. one of the biggest earthquakes in history hit San Francisco for devastating forty-seven seconds, with several aftershocks to follow up the next half hour; as the people of the city hopped out from under beds or from chairs to find what once stood a beautiful city was now a city that was crushed along with the souls of the people of the city. Hundreds of buildings had been leveled; thousands more were on the verge of collapsing, fires now burned here and there throughout the city, which would soon increase into fires blazing to add to the devastation for three days.
In this fast-paced, hooking novel the author H. Paul Jeffers provides an exciting, gripping description of the terrifying days in April 1906. Having a wide range of eyewitnesses, Jeffers takes the views of many different individual as they all have different stories on the tragedy of San Francisco. Including celebrities like Enrico Caruso and John Barrymore; the military authorities who tried to bring the people back into control and out of chaos; merchants who struggled heroically to save their shops and goods from the ruins and the flames; the men and women took scraps of paper and wood and wrote to their family members to tell them that they were still alive (all of which, incredibly, the Postal Service actually delivered): from all these and many other perspectives Jeffers has created a masterful book of survival and the after math of one of the biggest tragedies of all time leaving readers from East Coast to West on the edge of their seats.

I've never been to San Francisco and read this book largely out of curiosity. But I found it fascinating...from the personal descriptions of so many who were there...to pictures depicting the devastation. Well researched and well written. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Massachusetts mill disaster!
This is a fact filled book covering a story that every New Englander should know. The Pemberton Mill disaster was (and still is) one of the worst industrial calamities in the United States history. And yet many Massachusetts (and New England) residents don't know the story. In 1860 the Pemberton Mill, a textile mill, located in Lawrence, Mass collapsed. The workers, many of them woman and children, were crushed, trapped and some miraculously left uninjured. The rumble of the building's fall was heard all across the city as people came rushing to the aid of the hurt and trapped workers. The situation turned for the worse as a fire broke out during the rescue and quickly engulfed the still ensnared victims. People could do nothing as they heard the cries of pain as the buried workers burnt to death.

2010 marks the 150th Anniversary of this tragic event. In honor of these poor souls lost I recommend that you read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher
Being raised in Lawrence I am interested in all books about Lawrence. I don't remember where or when I first learned about the Pemberton Mill Disaster. William Moran wrote several emotional pages on the Disaster in his book "The Belles of New England." Bruce Watson did a bang up job on his book "Bread and Roses." And now we have Mr. Oickle filling in some of the gap with regards to the Pemberton Mill in his "Disaster In Lawrence." This is a very good history book - lots of historical stuff. Mr. Oickle gives us lots of names, people, places and facts. The last two or three chapters get into the controversy over the mill's construction. I am sure another whole book could be written on this area alone.
This was a very positive book for the town and community of Lawrence. A number of very familiar names to all Lawrencians pop up everywhere and are made real as opposed to just a name on an old school or a plaque at the Common. I enjoyed the book and will add it to my personal Lawrence bookshelf. I would never have thought when a child wandering the streets and hanging on the corners of Lawrence that I would one day be writing and collecting books on the town. So there you go.

5-0 out of 5 stars History that reads like fiction
Disaster in Lawrence:The Fall of the Pemberton Mill is a fascinating book about the little-known collapse of one of the major mills in late 19th century Massachusetts that resulted in the deaths of many workers, including young children put to work to support immigrant families. The tragedy is the tremendous loss of life when women and children were forced by poverty to work long hours six days a week for wealthy mill owners.Occurring in the Robber Baron era of the late 19th century, the disaster is movingly brought to life by Oickle 's amazingly detailed account. The book includes loads of illustrations from contemporary sources--I found it very sad but compelling reading and highly recommend it to those who love history and anyone interested in social justice as well as those who just enjoy a good read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars VERY complete look at the loss of the Wawaset
Despite living most of my life within a radius of 30 miles or so of where the Wawaset went down, I'd been unaware of this bit of history. "Disaster on the Potomac" seems to be as complete a look as possible, including a map, and using photographs, drawings, models, art, and more to fill in the gaps, such as there not being any known photographs of the Wawaset herself. Not being a historian, I appreciate how the author puts the events into historical context, without sacrificing the readability of the story itself. The book also includes appendices of the passengers and crew (of probable interest to genealogists), "The Steamboat Inspection Service Report," and notes and bibliography.

As an aside, I've become interested in this, and I hope to go look around the river come Spring. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Three Days of Disaster
The early morning of Wednesday April 18, 1906 was shattered by two giant tremors that damaged streets and houses, destroyed water mains, gas, and electricity. After this fires broke out and burned buildings and homes. $500 millions worth of property was destroyed, 250,000 people were made homeless. Aid came from all over the nation and the world. Rebuilding began right after the fire. First there was the rumble from a massive railroad train, then the horizontal and vertical shaking that destroyed water mains and the electricity supply (p.18). Chimneys fell or disintegrated (p.19). Flimsily built structures collapsed and trapped their occupants (p.20). The early hour saved the thousands who would be in the wholesale and retail districts, unlike the produce area. Then a new and stronger quake hit the city. Housing built on fill earth crumbled and collapsed (p.23). The ground sank in some areas. Hills fell away and homes slid down the hill (p.24). Those who could stood in doorways for protection (p.25). It was all over in less than two minutes (p.27).

Chapter Two says the damage occured along a 200-mile stretch, about 20 to 40 miles wide (p.28). Earthquakes are responsible for much of the California scenery (p.29). The April 18, 1906 quake caused destruction north and south of San Francisco. In places the earth shifted (p.38). Chapter Three tells what happened next. Fifty-two major fires were reported in the downtown district (p.45). The lack of water prevented the firemen from extinguishing the fires (p.47). People sought refuge in open areas (p.50). General Frederick Funston declared martial law without legal authorization (p.55). Funston telegraphed the War Department to order rations and tents (p.58).

Chapter Four tells of Mayor Eugene Schmitz's actions. He summoned help from Oakland and Los Angeles, then created a "Committee of Safety" from the wealthy and influential to run affairs. Wooden buildings burned, but so did those of brick and mortar (pp.68-69). The priceless contents of the Sutro Library were lost in the fire (p.71). Black powder and dynamite were used to destroy buildings adjacent to the fires. Chapter Five shows how the fires spread (pp.76-77). A second fire created more danger. The fireboat 'Leslie' saved the harbor and Ferry Building. The Mint and Post Office were saved by their employees. People fled to safety (p.81). The buildings destroyed as firebreaks only provided fuel for the fires (p.85).

Chapter Six tells how the fires continued to burn in the afternoon. Mayor Schmitz issued the "shoot to KILL" order. Chapter Seven tells how the fire spread that night. Rumors spread like wildfire (pp.114-116). The news of the disaster resulted in relief being sent immediately (p.119). Chapter Eight tells how the fires continued on Thursday. The mansions on Nob Hill were burned with their riches (pp.121-123). People continued to flee south by land or east by sea. That afternoon Mayor Schmitz ordered the destruction of every building east of Van Ness Avenue to create a fire break.

Mayor Schmitz ordered the evacuation, but people could not get the food they wanted (p.145). Dynamite was used to create firebreaks (p.153). Then the wind changed and worked against the fire; it now turned north and east. [Could a bathtub of water really prevent a fire (p.158)?] The fire began to burn out by Saturday morning. That night rain began to fall (Chapter Ten). The worst fire in American history was over (p.167). Then supplies began to arrive on Saturday, and for weeks from the nation and the world (pp.171-173). Some claimed Divine punishment (p.174) Teddy Roosevelt assigned the Red Cross to distribute supplies [city corruption?] (p.177). Most of the destroyed area was rebuilt in 3 years (p.181). Strict construction standards were enforced. Reservoirs and cisterns were built (p.182). The 1915 Exposition showed a healed city.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top wildfire book.
Inferno by Committee joins other books on disasters and forest fires and could be on the top shelf of anyone interested in public lands, fires or human psychology when it comes to disaster.

The book treats the most expensive forest fire in US history with care, unraveling the blame game that the press and politicians engaged in while Los Alamos, the birthplace of the atomic bomb, was on fire in May 2000. Rather than singling out the fire fighters with drip torches who started the prescribed fire, the author finds that it was fire fighting methods, not prescribed fire methods that started the fire that roared into Los Alamos. The play by play of a botched prescribed fire and mistakes in containing that fire led to a billion dollar disaster.

The book looks at the history of land management in northern New Mexico and the history of the National Park Service and the US Forest Service in the Southwest and then looks at their historical views of fire and prescribed fire nationally. Thus we find out how the US Forest Service basically abandoned the land close to the Atomic City, leaving the residents and the weapons lab there vulnerable to an inevitable wildfire.

If you want a good story or if you want to understand fire on public lands, this book is a good primer.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly"
Tom Ribe's book "INFERNO BY COMMITTEE: A History of the Cerro Grande (Los Alamos) Fire..." has been a long time coming. As someone that was on the incident (Safety Officer on Bateman's Type I Interagency Incident Mamnagement Team- the 2nd one ordered) I'm grateful for his reserach and efforts in putting this work together. I have a better view of the "Big Picture" now, and events that led to "America's Worst Prescribed Fire Disaster." As former NPS Director Roger Kennedy states Ribe's book is "clear, scrupulous and thorough."Though there were a few minor quirks (like some ICS terms and locations that the author is dedicated to correcting ASAP) my overall impression is that it is fair, balanced and well researched. I learned a lot; I'm glad that Tom wrote it, and that I read it...

Product Description
Unlike the earthquakes and hurricanes that have influenced Caribbean history, the region's fires have almost always been caused by humans. Geographer Bonham C. Richardson explores the effects of fire in the social and ecological history of the British Lesser Antilles, from the British Virgin Islands south to Trinidad. Focusing on the late nineteenth century, leading to the 1905 withdrawal of British military forces from the region, Richardson shows how fire-lit social upheavals served as forerunners of political independence movements.

Drawing on Caribbean and London archives as well as years of fieldwork, Richardson examines how villagers used, modified, and contemplated fire in part to vent their frustrations with a savage economic depression and social and political inequities imposed from afar. He examines fire in all its forms, from protest torches to sugarcane fires that threatened the islands' economic staple. Richardson illuminates a neglected period in Caribbean history by showing how local uses of fire have been catalysts and even causes of important changes in the region. ... Read more

Product Description
In the days following Hurricane Katrina, a small parish in Louisiana known as St. Bernard, suffered some of the worst damage. The storm itself brought significant destruction, but the ensuing floods are what labeled this event one of the worst national disaster on American soil. The author, whose father and son were both members of the St. Bernard fire department during the storm, came face-to-face with the harrowing stories of the brave men and women who became heroes to so many.

In the early moments, the parish fire department personnel quickly learned that their roles had changed. Abandoned by the ambulance service as the first squalls of the storm reached the area, their new roles were diverse and demanding. Firefighters became the area's EMTs, rescue and recovery responders, mechanics, social workers, and provision providers. For some six thousand parish residents who made the unfortunate decision to stay in their homes, fire personnel, ignoring their own losses and heartaches, would become their saviors. ... Read more

This book is really good it tells it like it was in St. Bernard Parish before and during and after Hurricane Katrina.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homesick with renewed pride for St. Bernard
I was a life-long resident of St Bernard Parish who longed to know what exactly happened to my hometown. From learning the details about the destruction, to reading about the Fire Department's courage and faithfulness, I've been left in awe. Anyone who calls or called "the Parish" home must read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars CHALMETTE GIRL
I read this book and it was one of the best books I have ever read. And I don't really read that much but I couldn't put this book down. I was born and raised in Chalmette and finally there is a book about my people and what they went through. My family and I did evacuate and later my Dad passed away in the hotel.I lost a home and a Dad.I did eventually move away after 6 months of trying to live there again.Every time I went to my house I got disgusted. But anyway,I think it was a fantastic book and recommend anyone who is interested in it to buy it immediately.I will cherish this book the same way I cherish the few items I saved from my home.Everyone who was involved with helping people that day will forever be Heroes to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Firestorm: Hurricane Katrina and the St. Bernard Fire Department

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Captivation of Louisiana Heros
Michelle Buuck did an unbelievable job captivating The St. Bernard Fire Departments heroic actions. I started to read the book and 2 days later I was finished. It was very hard to put down once I began to read about the men who were responsible for saving an entire Parish of people; especially without any State or Federal assistance. The personal day by day trials & tribulations of each St. Bernard Fireman is a must read by all. Hurricane Katrina, the World's largest natural disaster, made History along with the Fireman in this book. All are & always will be Heros that will never be forgottten. ... Read more

Product Description
Just before the end of the 1990-1991 Gulf War, more than 700 wells in Kuwaiti oil fields were set on fire. Several international companies and scientific organisations were involved in extinguishing the fires and in assessing the impact of this major environmental incursion. Kuwaiti Oil Fires: Regional Environmental Perspectives summarises these effects. The topics covered include the application of remote sensing techniques to determine the location of wells on fire and plume movement; air quality and particulate monitoring by ground stations and aircraft measurements; organic and inorganic constituents in the air; use of modeling techniques to study dispersion characteristics of pollutants and deposition of soot; and the efforts by the fire fighters in extinguishing fires and capping the wells. A brief overview of the causes of the crisis and the role of regional and international groups in resolving the dispute is presented as well as some basic and useful statistics of the region covering general information on economic aspects and exploitation of oil resources in both Iraq and Kuwait. Problems faced by the fire fighting teams, the preparations made to overcome the problems, and technology used in extinguishing the well fires are also discussed. Numerous colour photographs are used to illustrate the problems encountered and the techniques involved in their solution. ... Read more
