The book provides information on public health concerns about fish parasites, the methods used to examine fish for parasites, and those parasites found only in very selective organs or tissues. Awesome Book
One of the best textbooks on fish today.Gives a great overview of all the relevant topics going into detail in the places where it is best needed.If you want to know anything about fish this is the perfect place to start and if you are going to be teaching a class on fish, this is the textbook for you!

The "Brusca and Brusca" of fish Biology?
I have been using Moyle and Cech (an Introduction to Ichthyology) for years as the standard text to recommend to undergraduate students interested in developing a solid knowledge of basic fish taxonomy/biology/ecology but I think Helfman et al is a much more student-friendly textbook.It is split into sections: Introduction, form function & ontogeny, taxonomy phylogeny and evolution, zoogeography genetics and adaptations, behaviour and ecology, the future of fishes (conservation).These sections a sub-divided into sensible chapters.

The writing style is clear, peppered with good references for further reading and the authors make good use of excellent figures.As well as the reference list there are supplemental reading recommendations.The authors make good use of boxes to highlight interesting areas, e.g. vicariance versus dispersal, should we eat farmed salmon? and finish off each chapter with a bullet point summary.Being a single book treatment of a vast subject there are some sections where I guess the need for brevity has enforced absences, e.g. there is no mention of the special properties of fish eye lenses in the vision section and the section on swimming seems a bit sparse (and would probably benefit from more use of diagrams).

In summary, this is an excellent text that will appeal to undergraduates and serve as a useful sourcebook for tutors.

More Ecology Than Moyle and Cech
This is an outstanding upper-division textbook on fishes, comparable to Moyle and Cech, with important differences. These authors place more emphasis on behavior and ecology. These authors also utilize cladistics (explained in an excellent early chapter on systematics) throughout in their classification of fishes. This textbook is probably a bit more detailed in its content and slightly less readable than Moyle and Cech, but both make excellent references. Helfman et al include a number of boxed readings which provide up-to-date information on scientific research and other interesting fish topics (like eelskin boots!) ... Read more

Excellent text
I had the very fortunate opportunity to take Dr. Moyle's ichthyology class at UC Davis. We used this book as our text. The book was very helpful, and well explained. Moyle and Cech go into a great amount of detail in this text, and yet convey it in a straightforward and understandable way.

Pretty Solid
The authors did a great job with diagrams, fish anatomy, and physiological descriptions. Probably the most interesting section of this book is the ecology. Though some sections were more scientific than others and hard to keep focus at times, I still highly recommend this book to students or beginners.

Very Accessible Introduction Even for a Non-Specialist
Moyle and Cech's text reads like two books, Cech's introduction to fish anatomy and Moyle's discussion of behavior and conservation (which is precisely how they use the text in their UC Davis classes).While first half of the book is much more technical than the second half, both are accessible to the non-specialist.I hadn't taken Biology since High School and was able to process most of the material with minimal referencing of secondary sources.Both authors are good writers who incorporate subtle humor and have the ability to convey some of their passion for fish making this a somewhat less dry text book than the general tendency.I learned an incredible amount from these pages and highly recommend this text.

Great book
This is really a great text book that covers everything from anatomy, behaviour and fish senses, passing through each fish order, until reach valiable aspects of fish comprehension, like zoogeography and aquatic ecology. Because it's scientific writing, the book is fullfilled with graphics and diagrams, so in the beginning the unaware reader should feel such level of difficulty, but it doesnt compromises at all the inner knowledge the book wants to pass.

THE text on the fishes...
I am an avid fish fanatic. Moyle and Cech have produced what should be the greatest book of scientific interest on the subject.Seems like there is a but there?There is, this is a text book.If you are taking ichthyology, an upper level (sometimes graduate level) course on fishes this book will be your best friend.It is critical to understanding the largest group of vertebrates.It is well organized, fact filled and well cited.But, if you don't have Biology one and two, some chemistry, physiology and an introductory zoology course behind you it will lose you at the introduction.Even though I rate it high I would wait until a professor says you have to buy it. ... Recreational fishing in the United States is an important social and economic component of many marine fisheries, with an estimated 14 million anglers making almost 82 million fishing trips in 2004. Although each individual angler typically harvests a small number of fish, collectively these sport fisheries can take a significant fraction of the yearly catch - in some cases more than commercial fisheries. For example, in 1999, recreational fishing accounted for 94 per cent of the total catch of spotted sea trout, 76 per cent of striped bass and sheephead, and 60 percent of king mackerel. It is important that systems used to monitor fishing catch are adequate for timely management of recreational fisheries. However, the large number of anglers and access points makes monitoring recreational fishing much more difficult than monitoring commercial fishing. This report reviews the types of survey methods used to estimate catch in recreational fisheries, including state/federal cooperative programs. The report finds that both telephone survey and onsite access components of the current monitoring systems have serious flaws in design or implementation.There are also several areas of miscommunication and mismatched criteria among designers of surveys, data collectors, and recreational fisheries. The report recommends that a comprehensive, universal sampling frame with national coverage should be established, and that improvements should be made in statistical analysis of the data collected and in the ways the data are communicated. A permanent and independent research group should be established and funded to evaluate the statistical design and adequacy of recreational fishery surveys and to guide necessary modifications or new initiatives. ...
