A great book with keys that work!
This is an excellent book that belongs on the self of anyone who wants to be considered up-to-speed on the critters that dwell in our waters. I've had the opportunity to use the annelid and the tardigrade keys thus far, and both worked wonderfully. Great read
Great read, definitely basic, but ties together some loose ends that may have been left out that veterans take for granted when teaching beginners. I recommend it!

Basic Freshwater Fishing: Step-By-Step
Its a good book for beginners.Simple to read and understand.The book is organized well with all the needed techniques for fresh water fishing. I would recommend this book.

Good reading
this is good for beginners and a refresher for some of us who haven't been fishing for several years

Nice Primer to get started
I have started fishing more with my sons, so I thought it would be useful to buy a few books to make sure that I know the lingo, and do not make a fool of myself. Cliff Hauptman's books is a nice primer with lots of useful information. In it, he discusses the basic equipment and tackle needed, and various types of fish that are commonly sought. I found the information quite useful, and well worth the read. Some of the pictures and diagrams are not the best, but I felt more confident the next time I went out on the lake with my boys. Plus, we caught more fish, which is always nice.

If you are new to fishing, and looking for a quick read to get started, then I recommend this book. If you are more seasoned, this is probably not a great choice. Good luck, and see you at the lake.

Great book
I fished quite a bit growing up, but got away from it while in college. Recently I wanted to get back into it, so I needed some more grown-up gear. I have used this copy for years.While some of the information is a bit technical for the novice it is an excellent source of information if you are a hobbyist.Had good success finding everything from pet store tropical varieties to species encountered in local streams.I've not found any other source with this level of information. ... Great Book, sad to see its out of print
Along with being a comprehensive aquaculture guide, this book is also unique in stressing the importance of sustainability and small scale aquaculture practices. Very interesting examples global aquaculture, with an emphasis on N. American culture and species. This book acts as both a great research tool and guide for aquaculturist, but also illustrates many dynamic examples of low-imput high-output agriculture methods. Derives many great examples from Asian aquaculture practices that are not only productive but ecologically friendly.

First published in 1973, this book is without question the most valuable single work concerning Canada's freshwater fish fauna.The book is extremely reader-friendly, including detailed species descriptions, as well as biological and systematic information and distributions for Canada's 180-odd freshwater fishes.Clear and detailed keys for major fish groups are extremely valuable to professional and amateur biologists alike.

Fast but bent
This is a great book! It has really helped me out in my Ichthyology class. I got this book faster than I had expected but when it arrived one of the corners was very badly bent along with all the pages. I bought the book new and expected better quality.

Very useful keys
I have used this book in numerous fish surveys in Michigan, and have found the keys to be extremely useful, easy to use, and well illustrated.It and Scott & Crossman's "Freshwater Fishes of Canada" are almost the only fish ID books I use.A caveat - its broad geographic scope makes it less useful than regional keys, if they exist for your area. ... Review of Fishes of Arkansas
Fishes of Arkansas

Robison and Buchanan have done a good job of describing all of the fishes of Arkansas and showing where they can be found.The color pictures of actual specimens are superior to those in Fishes of Oklahoma and the drawings in Fishes in Kansas.There is a lot of information given, comparable to Fishes of Missouri.For people interested in fish, the book is a good investment.

This is a thorough - and to my knowledge, the only - treatise on native fishes of Arkansas, with photos, maps, and descriptions.A must for anyone interested in the taxonomy of Arkansas fish.

Not only does this work include all native and exotic species of fish in Mississippi but also extensive biological information on each. A lot of Fishes for the Price
I have to say up front that I am a bit prejudiced here.Dr. Ross is responsible for my current interest in fishes and I have been looking forward to this book for a while.That being said let me tell you what is good about this book... #1 The keys are outstanding, they are made so that the expert or layman can use them.Key identification points are well illustrated and explained #2 The species accounts are the best I have ever seen.There is excellent information on the biology and conservation concerns of each species.There is also a brief section on the meaning of each scientific name that will be of interest to the professional and beginner. #3 Dr. Ross included an excellent glossary and bibliography that will make further research and understanding easy. #4 There is also a section on the history of Ichthyology in the Southeast US in general and Mississippi in particular.

If you are interested in the fishes of the Southeast US this book will be useful and entertaining.It will be indispensable if you study fishes in any Mississippi river or Gulf drainage.I can remember my first day in class, thinking that we where just going to look at a bunch of minnows.I know better now, and this book will explain why.

A Reference for Every Aquarist
American Aquarium Fishes by Robert J. Goldstein whose PhD is in microbiology and parasitology and is a member of The American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, among others, is a reference that should be in the library of every aquarist who is interested in native American fish. Too little is written on this subject and this book covers ninety percent of everything you need to find, collect and keep these fish. The only drawback I see is that, although there numerous are color plates in the center section of the book, I would have liked to see all of the photographs in color. Bottom line? Anything I have read by this author is well worth the price of admission.

American Aquarium Fishes (W L Moody, Jr, Natural History Series)
Great book fo native fishes written for the beginner and advanced hobbiest alike. Easy reading with many color photos.

Fairly good.
The book in its entirety is fairly good.The authors tried to cover a broad scope.This book may be useful for the breeder in that there is specific information on each species.Please note that you may need to combine the information in this text with information from other sources (print, web, etc.) to take complete care of your native fishes.

This comprehensive reference volume will appeal to both specialty and general-interest libraries: American Aquarium Fishes provides over 118 color and over 200 black and white photos of various species of aquarium fish, providing detailed discussions on where to find native fishes, how to collect and transport them around the globe, and regional rules of collecting. The depth and detail and the vivid photos are impressive.

The best reference to date!
It's about time that a talented group of aquarium hobbyist (who are also biologists I believe) got together to write a book that the layman can understand and appreciate.You will not find convuluted passages common in the scientific literature.Each species account is well written and contains the information that the hobbyist wants.

Goldstein, Harper, and Edwards are well known hobbyist and if there are any real experts in the field, it's these guys.
