3-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware - limited geographic coverage!
Although the general concepts and tips for watching fishes presented in this short book seem useful, I was quite disappointed to find out after purchasing the book that "although this book focuses on the northeastern United States, it will be useful throughout the United States and Canada east of the Rocky Mountains".Clearly this information should have been noted in the title or somewhere on the cover of the book - this is a geographically limited guide that does not cover western North America. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars buy this book
One of the better books I have read on fishing. My old man took us out as kids and never really learned the right way, so needed to read up.

I take my kids now and needed some tricks and tips, I really enjoyed the format and it was not like I had to read the book I could flip through and digest and come back and read more later.

I highly recommend the book!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent value
Book is in better condition than described, that is to say, the description was modest.
Shipping was a bit slow, about 9 days.
I'm very satisfied with purchase overall based on condition and price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner
I can see how this book would be helpful to an experienced angler. It's mostly a compendium of tips and has some nice charts that collects useful information into easy-to-read one-pagers. For the person who is new to fishing, as I am however, it's not as useful. There's very little -- really almost none -- introductory information, and the author often uses fishing jargon without explanation. Overall, it's readable enough that I've ordered the author's "Fishing Basics" book, which sounds like what I was hoping this book would be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide!
I got this book when it first came out at 12 years old, I have learned a lot of my fishing knowledge from it and highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars More information than 5 other books
I'm getting back into fishing after many years and have been reading up. I've read or examined maybe 20 different books in the past month. While there are a number of good books on freshwater fishing, this one is way out ahead of the others. It contains many detailed instructions for special techniques. The author is neutral regarding both type of fishing as well as brands of gear. If you like a lot of folksy fish tales, try some of the other good books. This one focuses on workable techniques -- many of them ingenious -- using easy-to-find equipment, materials and baits. I'm itching to put more of them into practice. The book is laid out in such a way that you can quickly get to the information that interests you. Lots of diagrams illustrate the methods described. If you buy only one freshwater fishing book, make it this one. If you're going to buy several, get this one first. ... Read more

Product Description
Salmonid Fisheries is a landmark publication, concentrating on river management, habitat restoration and rehabilitation, disseminating lessons learnt in relation to the intensively studied salmonids that are applicable to future interventions, not just for salmonid species but for other non-salmonid species, biota and ecosystems. The contents of this book are the product of the Atlantic Salmon Trust’s 40th Anniversary Conference, held in association with the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust.

Drawing together carefully-edited contributions from many of the world leaders in river restoration from academia, commercial management and government agencies, this important book highlights the need to view river management from the context of the catchment and to adopt an ecosystem-based approach to restoration. The book is broadly divided into two sections which discuss first, the status of current understanding concerning the relationship between lotic habitat management, the response of salmonid fisheries and the theory of river restoration, and secondly, the application of this to habitat management and river restoration.

Salmonid Fisheries is an extremely valuable work of reference for fisheries managers, ecologists, environmental scientists, fish biologists, conservation biologists and geomorphologists. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological and earth sciences, and fisheries management are studied or taught should have copies of this book on their shelves.

  • Contributions from a wide range of well known experts
  • Published in association with the Atlantic Salmon Trust
  • Habitat management is crucial for dwindling wild salmon populations
  • Of great importance to aquatic ecologists and fisheries managers

2-0 out of 5 stars A list of community fish, bulked out.
More than half this book says absolutely nothing about community fishes.

The first section of this book repeats much of the same information one might find in any aquarium book -- heating, lighting and filtration, plants and layout, maintenance of equipment, feeding, etc. -- at a fairly general level. The main section of the book lists and describes sixty freshwater tropical fish that can be kept together in tropical tanks. There's nothing about compatibility between specific species, or how to include fish that are marginally community-oriented.There's nothing about water conditions for different fish, so a reader depending on this book might not even realize that some fish will do poorly in the same water that other fish thrive in.The last section of the book is about breeding -- again, nothing about "community."

For those who are interested in the "community" aspect of a community aquarium, this book is simply a list of sixty fish to choose from. For those who are setting up an aquarium for the first time, who want a random mix of fish, and who want to buy only one book, this could be the book. ... Product Description
Biomonitoring is a vital and rapidly growing field. FreshwaterBiomonitoring and Benthic Macroinvertebrates presents astate-of-the-art look at the use of benthic macroinvertebrates(aquatic insects, molluscs, crustaceans, and worms) in the biologicalassessment of water quality in lakes and streams. The use of theseorganisms has increased dramatically in the past two decades in bothNorth America and Europe; no other comprehensive overview of thetopic is available. This book contains contributions from nineteenexperts from North America, Europe, and Australia. Some chapterscontain updates and syntheses of new information on previouslyreviewed topics, while others present the first detailed coverage ofa topic. The book includes much useful reference material on thehistory of biomonitoring with invertebrates as well as work of a morepractical nature. The design, implementation, analysis andinterpretation of benthic surveys are discussed in detail, as aretoxicity testing and field experiments. This timely and importantbook will be of interest to professional entomologists, invertebratezoologists, and aquatic ecologists, especially those in applied areasconcerned with environmental quality, preservation, and restoration. Those working in the growing environmental biotechnology field, or ingovernment agencies responsible for monitoring drinking water, environmental quality, or marine habitats, will also find many newideas here. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, terrible price
This book is absolutely an essential resource for scientists and managers who are interested in biomonitoring techniques or programs. Each article is absolutely brimming with well-worded, well-organized, pertinent information. If you are willing to spend the time to read the entire collection of papers, you will have a firm grasp of most (not all) of the older and contemporary biomonitoring techniques. This book is geared toward freshwater biomonitoring, but can most certainly be applied with a marine setting. My only qualm is that the book is list priced on amazon.ca at $413CDN, but you can order it from amazon.com for $161USD...yikes!Buy it from .com, not .ca, sorry Canada!

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for freshwater biologists
