Foreword by Michael Sorkin

Introduction by Richard Guy Wilson

"This excellent book makes a strong case for a renewed appreciation ofregional modernism." -- Erika Belsey, Art New England

Inflected by local climate, construction practices, regional culture, and Florida lifestyle, the work of the Sarasota school of architecturemarks a high point in the development of regional modernism in Americanarchitecture.

Although the Sarasota school wasn't a consciously organized movement, itwas an important chapter in American modernism that, unlike the earlierBay Area school and Chicago school, has received little study orpublished scholarly treatment. John Howey provides the first soliddocumentation of the Sarasota group's designs and theories. He hasinterviewed all of the surviving architects and original clients and hasincluded a rich archive of photographs by Ezra Stoller, AlexandraGeorges, and others. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Architects who flew too close to the sun
John Howey does an excellent job of connecting the place, the time, and the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright and Walter Gropius, to explain the development and evolution of a fine group of architects who practiced in Sarasota beginning in the 1940s, and a few of whom remain even today. While he ends his book on a down note, the book itself and the hard work and dedication of the Sarasota Architectural Foundation have resulted in a revived interest in the work of these architects.Hopefully, efforts to save and restore their surviving masterworks will succeed, despite the forces of McMansionization at work in Sarasota.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD Mid-Century Modernism
This is the story of a group of talented young architects who were in the right place at the right time. The time (1946-66) was when America was in a building boom, the public wanted fresh, clean designs.Sarasota was a growing town and Modern Architecture was going to change the world. The Father of it all was an architect named Ralph Twitchell. In 1940 Twitchell hired a young intern architect named Paul Rudolph.Rudolph would go onto Harvard GSD, serve in the Navy and return to Sarastoa in 1946, and then become Twitchell's partner in 1950. The two of them, with a group of other talented architects (most notably Victor Lundy) would go on to design some extraordinary custom homes, churches and schools.Their architecture stressed the tectonic (the use of new technologies).Although the Sarasota aesthetic was in similar vein to the California post- war architecture, it also was heavily derivative of a Florida vernacular architecture.Rudolph's early philosophy stressed five points:the Clarity of construction; Maximum economy of means; Simple overall volumes penetrating vertically and horizontally; Clear geometry floating above the Florida Landscape; Honesty in details and in structural connections. It is always a treat to see his pen and ink renderings.A must for the serious student of modernism. ... Exploring the relationship between that realm of the classical gods and the sphere of medieval mythographers, Jane Chance illuminates the efforts of medieval writers to understand human existence and the forces of nature in relation to Christian truth.

Product Description

Hoffschwelle tells the story of a remarkable partnership to build model schools for black children during the Jim Crow era in the South. The Rosenwald program, which erected more than 5,300 schools and auxiliary buildings between 1912 and 1932, began with Booker T. Washington, then principal of Tuskegee Institute, who turned for financing to Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck & Company. By requiring communities to raise matching funds, the two men inspired a grassroots movement that built schools in 15 southern states.
The Rosenwald schools, scores of which still stand, exemplified the ideal educational environment—designed for efficiency, making full use of natural light to protect children’s eyesight, and providing sufficient space for learning. Ironically, these schools, which represented the social centers of their African American communities, also helped to set standards for white schools.
Though the program’s funding ended with Rosenwald’s death in 1932, many continued as public institutions. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Rosenwald Schools to its list of America’s Most Endangered Historic Places in 2002. Hoffschwelle examines these buildings as exemplars for school architecture and design, as community institutions and partnerships, and as a means of formalizing a state education program that, finally, would include black children. This story of extraordinary generosity and sacrifice will interest scholars of American and African-American history, educators, school planners, and preservationists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially recommended for American History reference shelves as well as public and college libraries.
Written by Mary S. Hoffschwelle (professor of history at Middle Tennessee State University), The Rosenwald Schools of the American South is the true story of a partnership to build model schools for black children during the Jim Crow era in the South, with positive repercussions lasting to the present day. The Rosenwald Project, which began with Booker T. Washington and received the backing of the Tuskegee Institute and Sears, Roebuck & Co. president Julius Rosenwald, created more than 5,300 schools and auxiliary buildings from 1912 to 1932 in 15 Southern states. Scores of these schools remain today, as they were designed for maximum efficiency, space for learning, and serving as a cultural and social center of African American communities; ironically, their existence helped set high standards for white schools. The Rosenwald Schools of the American South meticulously examines all aspects of the Rosenwald Schools, including their contributions to architecture, community, education, and their role in formalizing a state education program that would one day include black children. A detailed and scholarly study, especially recommended for American History reference shelves as well as public and college libraries. ... Read more

Product Description
Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida early on Monday morning, August 24, 1992. Widely described as the worst natural disaster in modern U.S. history, the storm left 38 people dead in South Florida, 80,000 homes destroyed, and damage estimates of at least billion. The area devastated by the hurricane was approximately three times the size of Manhattan. Almost 250,000 people were left homeless by Andrew--roughly the population of the entire city of Las Vegas, Nevada. Garbage generated by the storm in a single night was equal to the projected landfill for Dade County for the next thirty years.

Hurricane Andrew, the Public Schools and the Rebuilding of Community addresses the experience of the Dade County Public Schools--its teachers and students, administrators and staff--during the first school year following the storm. In particular, it examines the role of the schools in helping people cope with a disaster of the magnitude of Hurricane Andrew, and more specifically, with their role in rebuilding community. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Cute story but forgettable.
Perhaps this sequel to `Lost Goat Lane' assumes readers are familiar with the story's trappings, but a new reader is cast slightly adrift. Those who examine a book before reading it will note the author resides in British Columbia, and may expect the bearings of the story to be near that locale. With clues such as climate, rural/small town locale, proximity to Miami and Atlanta, knowledgeable readers will deduce that the story takes place in the Southeastern USA. The storyline is trite, and a bit old-fashioned for today's young readers. There are too many references to falling down on one's `behind' or `backside'! Inconsequential characters come and go without reason for being. There is so much going on, with issues of animal cruelty, race relations, absentee fathers, school disciplinary actions, single moms and boyfriends, that nothing gets resolved satisfactorily. The last chapter ends too abruptly; this reader turned the pages and looked for a final chapter that would wrap things up, but to no avail. It could be a cute story, but it's very disappointing.

Freshman Justin Martin is pretty sure all of his problems in life are about to be over. He's just been made the youngest varsity baseball player in almost two decades, he found a bike to take him home after practice, and all he needs to do to make everything complete is to sell Little Billy, one of the family's pet goats. He even finds someone to buy Little Billy for exactly the right price!Justin's life is golden.

Until Justin and his siblings find out that Little Billy's new owner is mistreating him.If they leave him they'll all feel horrible and guilty forever. If they try to buy him back, Justin loses his bike and his spot on the baseball team.If they steal him...There just doesn't seem to be a good solution.

Just when it looks pretty bad, Justin's long-absent father appears, and things get much worse. Now everyone in the family is thrown into an emotional mess.If Justin doesn't figure it all out quick, and get his head back in the game, he may just lose his spot on the baseball team anyway. Not to mention the respect of his family, and himself.

Justin's life may not be something you recognize, or it may be a lot like yours.Either way, the decisions he has to make are a lot like the ones everyone deals with. How will you deal with injustice?Do you give someone who hurt you a chance to explain?Do you let them back in and risk them hurting you again? How far will you go to get what you want?

This book is about deciding right and wrong for yourself. It's about choosing what kind of person you're going to be and defining your place in the world. These aren't easy things to decide, but I think Justin sets a good, honest example.
