Product Description
Nearing 40, standing five feet eight, weighing in at 160 pounds, Mark St. Amant was most definitely not a football player. He had never played a single down of real football in his life and even in the sports he did play, his greatest skill seemed to be choking when the game was on the line. So why on earth did he suddenly become, of all things, a semi-pro football kicker?

Fantasy football writer and self-described poster child for suburban-raised white boy Mark St. Amant tells the unlikely story of how he ditched his television and laptop to join an inner-city football squad the mostly African-American Boston Panthers, one of more than 600 semi-pro teams around the country. With warmth, insight, and his trademark offbeat, self-deprecating humor, Mark recounts the strides he made on and off the field and reveals the powerful bonds that developed among teammates young and not-so-young, struggling and successful, black, white, and Hispanic, all clinging tightly to their dreams and playing the game they love.

From couch potato to field goal kicker, Mark lived out a real-life football fantasy, discovering true teamwork, staring his lifelong fear of athletic failure in the face, witnessing testosterone-fueled hilarity both on and off the field, and achieving gridiron glory in ways he d never imagined. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just Read It!
I picked up this book to read while waiting for an oil change, and I laughed out loud. You wouldn't peg me for a person who would get such a "kick" out of a book on football--I'm a female English teacher. But the author does a great job of describing how he felt when he joined a semi-pro team made up of people who don't run in his usual social circles.I have given copies of the book as gifts to a wide range of people (a lawyer, a college coach, my mother, my aunt, and a friend who also played semi-pro football, for example), and all of them have called to tell me how funny the book is.They each recount a scene or two, laughing as they describe events from memory in great detail.

This book would also make a great birthday gift for any guy who fears he's headed over the hill.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read
This is a funny, inspiring, wonderfully readable book. It's about love, sports, human nature, team, and one person's growth. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!
Anyone who enjoyed the movies Rudy, Invicible, The Rookie & Hoosiers will want to read this book by Mark St. Amant. Once again the ordinary guy succeeds when he fufills his dream with hard work & determination. That's how a 37 year old author was able to become a place kicker for a minor league football team, even though he never played a game of organized football on any level. Mark accepted an unexpected invitation to place kick for the Boston Panthers of the EFL. You'll enjoy his journey from a struggling doubting Thomas to a league all-star his second season. His insight to human nature & racial tensions is worth the read as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book that would make a great gift!
This is just a terric book--exciting, well-written, and smart. It gives hope to all armchair athletes, besides being a really detailed and wise study of human hature with sports as the backdrop. This is the kind of memoir everyone can relate to--an "everyday, normal" person doing something out of the ordinary and writing about it with depth and insight. This book would make a great gift for the thinking sportsperson.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story and laugh out loud funny
"Just Kick It" is an excellent follow-up to Mark St. Amant's first book "Committed".I found myself laughing out loud on the train ride home from work. But it is more than just a funny story of an ex-soccer player becoming a place kicker for a semi-pro football team.Mark St. Amant does a wonderful job bringing the reader close to his teammates, each taking a different path to semi-pro football. In describing their stories, I felt closer to the team."Just Kick It" is about much more than just a football season. And the members of the Boston Panthers are much more than just football players. It is about decisions, priorities, and looking at life from the perspective of others.Keep writing mark, you have a unique talent. ... Who are your picks for the 100 greatest football players of all time? What about the 25 greatest teams and the 25 greatest games? Members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee have weighed in on the issue in NFL's Greatest.

The esteemed committee has chosen the greatest players, teams, and games and the 25 most important events in the history of the National Football League. The roster is, unsurprisingly, impressive--even though the committee refrained from individual rankings, presenting the lists in alphabetical or chronological order. They're all here, from Herb Adderley to Deacon Jones (who coined the term "sack"), from Sonny Jurgensen to Steve Young, from the 1929 Packers to the 1998 Broncos, and from the November 28, 1929, game in which Ernie Nevins scored all of his team's points to help the Browns defeat the Bears 40-6 (the NFL's oldest record) to Super Bowl XXXIV, in which the Rams held off the Titans.

Whether you agree or disagree with the selections, they make great fodder for discussion. NFL's Greatest is sure to find favor with football fans. --Sunny Delaney ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book aboutathletes.
This book written by Mr. Longoria is a unique sports narrative which gives any sports fan another aspect on the history of professional football.Aptly entitled "Athletes Remembered," Mr. Longoria documents thestories of the Latino athletes in a positive and very interesting style.Ipersonally was unfamiliar with many of these athletes; however, I enjoyed reading their stories and learning about these talented players.Myprofessional background is education and I firmly believe that this bookwould be a tremendous reading experience, not only for Latino children, butfor children from all ethinic backgrounds. While Latino children will morereadly identify with these athletes, they are really establishing rolemodels for all children, regardless of their ethnicity. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Great Story, poorly written
I love LeRoy Butler. He is one of my favorite Packers ever.I have heard his story on tv and through various internet articles, so I thought I would purchase his book, as I purchase most Packers books I come across. His story is very inspiring.Although, to be quite honest, the book is pretty poorly written. It doesn't flow very well, I thought I was reading something I wrote in middle school. He spends 2/3 of the book on his childhood and then briefly touches on his career at FSU and Green Bay.I am not disappointed in my purchase, but it could have been written better.Go Pack!

3-0 out of 5 stars a supa-hot role model
I met Mr. Zorich once.He was a friendly, nice guy.Even outside of a football setting, he ran up the stairs like an athlete would run up some bleachers. And yes, he's handsome in person too.

This book is clearly meant to young readers. It's short on words and full of photographs.Further, topics come up like obeying your parents, studying hard, and remembering not to break the rules.Zorich is described as "part-black and part-white," rather than as "biracial," again, probably due to the reading level of the target audience.

They say that in Brazil, both little kids and their fathers watch Xuxa, for different reasons of course. Here, young readers can learn about a potential role model. For us adults who think Zorich is hot, there are approximately four photos that reveal his sexy, hairy midriff.Beyonce, be jealous!Even in his fully clothed photographs, he's phyne!

The book doesn't mention Zorich's attendance of law school.Perhaps this was written before that happened. When reading John Amaechi's autobiography, I was incredibly disappointed how that biracial athlete and children's advocate seemed totally uninterested in helping Black kids.Zorich is different. He is shown with children of all races, including African Americans like himself.

If you know a child who enjoys football, wants to be a professional athlete, or is biracial and needs role models, you may want to consider this book.I'm thinking of buying it for a multiracial son of some close friends of mine. ... Read more

Product Description
There has never been such a book. From their collaboration on the classic Cincinnati Game called by Cooperstown s library the best coffee table book on baseball ever written Lonnie Wheeler and John Baskin have teamed up again, this time for a brassy, anecdotal collection of stories on Cincinnati s all-time grid legends.
Encyclopedic in detail, thoughtful in each appraisal, it s an odyssey through the legendary names, games, and teams of more than a hundred years of area football. It begins in the late 1800s with Woodward High School beating the University of Cincinnati and ends with Tony Pike s last pass in the Orange Bowl. In between, Schoolboy Legends brings to life a vital slice of Cincinnati culture. For it is unlikely that any other major American city does high school football quite like the Queen City and its environs. Its Friday nights speak vividly to our neighborhoods, parishes, and sporting ethic because it is here that Cincinnati competes, amuses and in many ways defines itself. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars As a Redskins Fan, You'll Love It
Wow. I read this book way back in '87 when it came out so I can't remember much. But I DO remember laughing a lot and walking away with a lot of insight in to the life of one of the most beloved Redskins of all time. You'll get some really cool stories about what Joe encountered during his college and pro careers, as well as during his retirement.

If you're a Redskins fan from way back in the day, DEFINITELY pick this up. Otherwise, you might want to look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Would you rather have...
One million dollars or Joe Theismann's head full of nickels? I salute Joe Theismann for many things: his love of pro-Stalinist poetry, his embrace of the Inuit culture and his associated fundraising, his never-ending efforts to clear the name of Mumia Abu Jamal and the way he still wears olive green double-breasted suits when no one thinks they're attractive. Joe doesn't care! He's a man who knows what it takes to make it in the world and he doesn't let his lack of humility or broadcastign ability get in his way.

Best chapters:

Chapter 308: Joe contemplates Hair Combing
Chapter 1,178: Joe has a frank discussion about HPV.
Chapter 1,789: Joe gets an ESPN intern fired for bringing him soup that was "too hot." ... Read more
