Excerpt: Monte Leon Coleman (born November 4, 1957 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas) is a former American football linebacker who played for sixteen seasons with the Washington Redskins from 1979 to 1994. He is currently the head football coach for Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Coleman played college football at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, then a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school. He played safety his first three years before being converted to the linebacker position as a senior. He set a school record with 22 interceptions and became the first player from Central Arkansas drafted in the NFL when the Redskins chose him in the 11th of the 12 rounds of the 1979 NFL Draft with the 289th overall selection. (The draft now consists of seven rounds.) Coleman played for the Redskins (and in the NFL) in parts of three decades: the 1970s, the 1980s, and the 1990s. On the all-time list of games played as a Redskin, Monte Coleman is currently second having played in 217 games, Darrell Green is first. He is one of only three men to play at least 16 seasons with the franchise, along with quarterback Sammy Baugh (16) and Green (20). Colemans 56.5 sacks are the team's fourth-highest all-time total. Coleman played in the Super Bowl four times, winning three: Super Bowl XVII, Super Bowl XVIII, Super Bowl XXII, and Super Bowl XXVI. Monte Coleman made the all Madden Team in 1993. He selected by Washingtonian Magazine as the Washingtonian of the Year Award in 1996. Coleman was inducted to the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. Mo money, more problems
I purchased this book out-of-curiosity, and could not stop reading.Alex's personal life stemming from a child coming to a foreign country with his family, being bullied, football career in college and NFL, and his business relationship with his brother demonstrates the potential ofmisplacing trust. Who may we trust, if not our own blood?He clearly explains what it takes to be in the NFL, the politics, performance enhancing drugs, and the injuries which may end the career of aspiring football player.It is a book that makes us more wise and helps us to make better choices.Alex is a positive role model to many athletes who wish to pursue their dream and success in professional sports.I highly recommend this book. ... I really thought this book was a good book to read because it is the story of NFL football players. I really like how it has the in game experience. Football Now has players profiles and it tells of off field problems. This book helped me understand how you can be what you want if you just stay in school and go to college. In 1929 a new high school named for the Confederate general Robert E. Lee was built on the banks of Goose Creek, across Market Street and parallel with the tracks of the railroad where an Inter-Urban rail system connected the Tri-Cities area (Baytown, Goose Creek and Pelly) to Houston, twenty-five miles west. For the investment of twenty-five cents and forty-five minutes, you could travel one way between Houston and the burbs via rail. The Tri-Cities were in "oil boom" territory on the Texas Gulf Coast. Humble Oil & Refining Company, known today as Exxon, had invested heavily in this area by building both a petroleum and petro-chemical refinery and deep-water docks capable of handling ocean-going tankers which maneuvered up and down the Houston ship channel. The Baytown refinery was, until the 1960's, the largest oil refinery in the Western Hemisphere. The people who lived in this area were a hardy sort who carved a living out of the black clay, called "gumbo," and mosquito-infested, swamp-like, humid plains. Oil, or "black gold" as it was called, drove the economy here. The stench of it and petro-chemical fumes were, on one hand, abhorrent, but on the other, had the sweet aroma of money, and lots of it, which is why people were willing to live in this grievous place.
