4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Professional Guide
The author's expertise in the subject matter becomes apparent when you read his lucid explanations of a subject matter that can be quite dry.He successfully intertwines historical events and human stories with the technical discussions of each section to keep the reader engaged and interested.Despite the breadth of the book it is clear that the author has spent considerable time researching the individual sections and has presented the material in a methodical and organized fashion. Thus it clearly serves as a useful professional guide and should be on every money manager's shelf.I especially enjoyed reading the beginning chapters which focus on the historical background and the arrangement of the global currency markets. The author has many clear examples to illustrate his points and thus the book will also appeal to the novice who wants to learn the fundamentals of the currency markets. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Nicolae Pleşiţă (Romanian pronunciation: ; April 26, 1929 - September 28, 2009) was a Romanian intelligence official and secret police investigator. From 1980 to 1984, he led the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Securitate, the secret service of Communist Romania. He was described by the New York Times and Associated Press at the time of his death as "a die-hard Communist and ruthless chief of the Securitate secret police." A participant in various actions taken against armed or peaceful anti-communist groups, Pleşiţă began his career as a Romanian Communist Party cadre, and rose through the ranks of the Securitate while holding various political offices in the Interior Ministry. Personally involved in the brutal interrogation of dissidents such as Paul Goma, and allegedly the person masterminding several attacks on the Romanian diaspora, he is most remembered for his connections with the Venezuelan terrorist Carlos the Jackal. He arranged for Carlos to be sheltered in Romania after the bombing of Radio Free Europe and was accused, but eventually found innocent in a Romanian court, of complicity in the bombing. After the successful 1989 Revolution, Pleşiţă was also noted for openly admitting his various involvements in acts of violence, and for claiming that they were justified by circumstance. Pleşiţă was born in Curtea de Argeş, a town in Argeş County, southern Romania. According to Gheorghe Florescu, a black marketer of coffee and memoirist who met Pleşiţă during communism, the future general had exceptionally lowly origins, being "the son of a farm hand with a two primary classes education and an illiterate peasant woman, who hailed from a ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24561419 ... Product Description
When the Second World War began, Canada had no foreign intelligence capacity. Its political leaders had concluded that a clandestine service was not necessary to meet the nation's intelligence requirements. Yet Kurt F. Jensen argues that the country was a more active intelligence partner in the wartime alliance than has previously been suggested. Cautious Beginnings spans the period from 1939 to 1951, when key policy and personnel structures were put in place. In the postwar years, Canada reconfigured its foreign intelligence operations to meet the challenges of a changing world, and by the early 1950s possessed resources that rivaled or exceeded those of many other nations. This is a convincing portrait of a nation with an active role in Second World War intelligence gathering, one that continues to influence the architecture of its current capabilities. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on the Genesis of Canadian Intelligence
Kurt Jensen's compact (179 pages of text and 28 pages of footnotes), superbly researched book on the beginnings of the Canadian intelligence community is the best book written on the subject to date. Jensen has skillfully plumbed the limited archival resources and secondary sources that are currently available in Canada to produce a fascinating picture of how Canada rapidly built up a small but very capable intelligence collection and analytic capability during World War II, then came perilously close to disbanding all these organizations once the war over. Fortunately, as Jensen details in the second half of his book, thesmall number of Canadian government officials who were intimately familiar with the importance of intelligence ensured that their country kept a small intelligence capability for future generations. Of particular interest, Jensen describes in detail Canada's intimate intelligence-sharing relationships with the United States and United Kingdom, particularly in the field of Signals Intelligence (SIGINT). The cost of this book (US$98.00) is pricey, but it is well worth the expense. ... Read more

Product Description
This unique electronic book on DVD-ROM has a comprehensive collection of the finest documents and resources on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and its use, along with the National Security Agency (NSA) spying controversy about anti-terrorism wiretapping and surveillance by the Bush administration. The Bush Administration has issued these responses to the NSA story: "Critics have stepped up their attacks on the President for authorizing the National Security Agency to listen to international communications of known al Qaeda members or affiliated terrorists during a time of war. The American people expect their leaders to stay a step ahead of the enemy, and the National Security Agency authorization is a critical tool in the War on Terror that saves lives and protects civil liberties at the same time." - Scott McClellan, White House Press Secretary. The White House notes that NSA authorization is solely for intercepting communications of suspected al Qaeda members or related terrorist groups. The U.S. Department of Justice provides this description of FISA, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) - Congress has enacted comprehensive legislation governing electronic surveillance. In 1968, Congress passed Title III of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. In 1978, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 ("FISA") was enacted. In 1986, Congress passed the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 ("1986 Act"), Public Law No. 99-508, which substantially revised Title III to provide coverage for the technological advances developed in the area of electronic communications since the passage of the original act. Minor amendments have since been made to the 1986 Act. These statutes share several common characteristics. Both Title III and FISA prescribe authorization procedures which must be followed before electronic surveillance can be conducted. These procedures include judicial approval of surveillance applications; minimization! of interceptions by surveilling officials; and limitations on the use of intercepted information. Moreover, both statutes impose civil and criminal sanctions on unauthorized surveillance activities. one court hasdistinguished between these regimes, holding that "FISA regulates both aural and visual electronic surveillance conducted for foreign intelligence purposes, and [Title III] regulates aural electronic surveillance conducted for domestic purposes." United States v. Koyomejian. In 2004, the Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division noted: “the FISA Court, or the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court is what folks are referring to when they sometimes refer to a “secret” court, where closed hearings include judges and government lawyers but no defendants or defense counsel. The FISA Court was set up a long time ago, back in 1978, when Congress established two different systems for criminal prosecution and foreign intelligence matters. The first system is the adversarial one that you know all about-prosecutors, defense lawyers, judges, and juries, all talking about whether or not a defendant committed a crime. The second system includes the FISA Court. The judges on this court regulate the government's collection of foreign intelligence information in the course of conducting counterintelligence. What does this mean in plain English? It means that the FISA Court doesn’t even get involved in run-of-the-mill criminal cases – for example, drugs, organized crime, and fraud. Instead, these judges get involved when the government has reason to believe that a person’s acting on behalf of a foreign power like another country or an international terrorist organization, and we’re trying to thwartespionage, sabotage, or terrorism. If a "significant purpose" of an investigation is to collect foreign intelligence information, then Justice Department attorneys can apply to the FISA Court for authorization to conduct surveillance or searches, or t ...
