5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Forensic Medicine A Physician Guide (2nd ed)

A Physician's Guide to Clinical Medicine (2nd ed.) is a multiauthored text edited by Dr. Margaret Stark and which forms part of the Forensic Science and Medicine series of Humana Press. From the point of view of the North American trained pathologist with subspecialty certification in forensic pathology and with a practice in hospital and forensic pathology, the book has provided new information in clinical forensic medicine and refreshed and enriched my expertise as a forensic and hospital pathologist.

The book is a multiauthored effort with most of the authorative contributors coming from the United Kingdom. The information is up-to-date, includes in a nutshell a substantial amount of material on clinical Forensic Medicine and is organized as follows: 1. The History and Development of Clinical Forensic Medicine Worldwide.2.Fundamental Principles.3.Sexual Assault Examination. 4.Injuries Assessment, Documentation and Interpretation.5.Non-accidental Injury in Children.6.Crowd Controlled Agents. 7.Medical Issues Relevant to Restraint. 8.Care of Detainees. 9.Infectious diseases: The Role of the Forensic Physician. 10.Substance Misuse. 11.Death in Custody. 12. Traffic Medicine.

The text is well written, easy to understand and short enough to read in its entity, even multiple times if desired, say in preparation for professsional examinations. A minor disappointment with the first chapter is that there is no inclusion of countries such as Japan, the United States and the Caribbean in the survey results. All the other chapters contain useful easily adaptable professional information for a worldwide audience. The book also has special appeal to family physicians, accident and emergency officers, surgeons, pediatricians, psychiatrists and public health personnel. As forensic medicine is scantily taught largely by unqualified personnel in medical schools throughout the world, medical students will find this publication a gem.A physician practicing in a less developed country, would be able to use this book, especially the proformas in the appendix, to help improve their medicolegal practice. References are accurate and appear to be specially chosen to provide further authorative information in cases where material had to be condensed such as in the chapter on Non-accidental Injury in Children.

There are very few typographical errors in the text, on pages 267 (severe) and 278 (custody) to name a few.A drawback is the relatively few photographs, all in black and white. There would be added value for audiences such as coroners, death investigators and District Medical Officers in Commonwealth countries such as those from theCaribbean, if a chapter on Death Scenes were to be included. The e-book is an added bonus but there is disappointment because of its restricted use on one computer.

Overall the second edition of the book continues to be a major success. It not only serves the target audience of physicians but would also be useful for medical students, police officers, paramedics, nurses and non-medical students in the forensic sciences. Although there is an abundance of information pertaining to the UK forensic system, practitioners in less developed countries would find this publication a very worthwhile investment as it is easily adaptable to their system. Forensic pathologists especially those in training and the more seasoned ones practicing in any geographic location would also find this text very useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Guide
This book is a valuable resource for physicians needing a good working /functional knowledge in forensic medicine. Clinicians with forays into the forensic side of medical pracctice will find the book helpful since thetopics on the fundamentral principles, sexual assault, injutryinterpretation and substance misuse are generally well discussed and topnotch. The subject on deaths leaves the reader "hanging" as itfocuses merely on deaths in custody. The subject should have been dealtwith more comprehensively. As the title of the book implies, this is merelya guide to clinical forensics.Readers with keener interest on the subjectshould resort to the standard textbooks in forensic medicine and forensicpoathology. Clinicians working in a litigious environement may benefit fromthis book. ... Read more

Product Description
Over the last half century, the science and practice of forensic science has undergone dramatic changes. Since the early 1960s the technological developments and their application to forensic science have been immense. Not only that, the application of science within a legal context and framework has developed enormously, as has the evaluation of the analytical results obtained. This unique text looks at the changes and challenges within forensic science over the last fifty years through a continuous diary of development witnessed by the editorials and relevant correspondence delivered through the UK Forensic Science Societies’ journal Science and Justice (formally the Journal of the Forensic Science Society).

The editorials are divided into sections relating to the developments of forensic practice, the advancement of science, education, legal aspects, forensic science and medicine, the international dimension of forensic science and the interpretation and evaluation of evidence. The text and first two sections are set in context by an introductory chapter written by Professor Brian Caddy examining the future of forensic science.

A key text that traces the historical development of forensic science through reflective editorials published in the journal Science and Justice, and the Journal of the Forensic Science Society

Includes introductory chapter by Professor Brian Caddy

Product Description

Building on the growing interest in forensics, the three cases featured in Science Sleuths: Solving Mysteries Using Scientific Investigations merge science and literacy as students are required to be critical and active readers as they conduct their investigation.

Beginning with an evaluation of the crime scene photos, the student investigators will analyze lab reports, phone messages, and interviews to extract key information. Students will sort through the evidence to formulate their initial hypothesis (being alert to red herrings) as they work to identify the person responsible for each crime. Students are given additional sets of information as they make their way through the case, requiring them to reformulate their initial hypothesis until they arrive at a final conclusion. The students final write-up consists of a chart explaining the means, motive, and opportunity for each of the suspects in addition to a thorough analysis of the evidence and a recreation of the case. Eventually students are able to determine which suspect should be charged with the crime!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read
Recently, I received a copy of"Science Sleuths" byHoward Schindler & Dennis Mucenski and decided to take it with me on a 4 hour trip to Maryland. As my wife was driving, I started reading the first case study, "The Great Art Heist".Both of us quickly eased into the case as I read aloud. While the miles clicked by, we were delightfully engaged as the case unfolded and we played forensic sleuths. In an attempt to solve the case we discussed every piece of information given, such as character descriptions, fiber comparisons, alibis, fingerprints and DNA analysis. The hours flew by and we were almost sorry to arrive at our destination.

This lab book is well laid out.In the opening pages the authors explain to the teacher exactly what to do on a daily basis-Day 1, Day 2....It also gives the reader all the information needed and explains how to interpret the info.Guys, thanks for all your hard effort and countless hours that went into "Science Sleuths".

I was privileged to take Dennis & Howard's course on forensics up at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine and this book is a great extension of their class. What can I say?... this book is a must for anyone teaching a forensics course. Also, do not miss out on the course they offer up in Maine, it will be the time of your life.I've taken a course at COA five years in a row and enjoyed every minute of my summers there but their course was my favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ready to Use Forensic Science Lessons
The lessons contained in this book are a fantastic resource. Each crime provides students the opportunity to think critically and the activities are ready to use.The lesson plans are well written and easy to follow and all student worksheets have been provided. As a teacher, this is a critical component when I look for a quality teaching resource.Even though teachers may feel that curriculum time constraints might not allow for the use of the complete lessons; what I like most about "Science Sleuths" is that teachers could use parts of the lessons to enhance curriculum as well. For instance when teaching DNA you could use the DNA Fingerprint portion of a lesson to augment your course without taking time to analyze all aspects of each crime.

5-0 out of 5 stars A paperback curriculum for gifted forensics students in grades 6-9
"Science Sleuths: Solving Mysteries Using Scientific Inquiry" is a paperback curriculum for gifted forensics students in grades 6-9, presenting three fictional murder cases with evidence, clues, interview and other data and lab results to be processed by a team of student sleuths who analyze the information logically and scientifically; then write up their formulated hypothesis to determine which suspect should be charged with the crime. "Science Sleuths" suggests teachers determine whether students should work alone to solve mysteries or in small groups of not more than three. Each mystery can take up to 5 40-minute class periods to solve, stimulating students to engage and use their scientific inquiry skills. "Science Sleuths" is a creative learning operation that integrates and sharpens science and literary abilities while promoting a process experience of cooperative teamwork and communication. "Science Sleuths" would work well in either a standard education setting such as a Middle or High School or an alternative education setting such as home-schooling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engage students and improve critical thinking skills
Science Sleuths: Solving Mysteries Using Scientific Inquiry is a great resource for improving students' science literacy skills and for integrating the use of the scientific method in a way that is fun for students and manageable for classroom teachers. The book includes three separate mysteries each with its own set of teacher instructions (and solutions), student instructions, and all the necessary reproducible templates and clue sheets to keep students engaged as well as organized. Students analyze each day's clues, develop hypotheses supported by the evidence and work to solve the mysteries. A pull-out poster for the classroom is included for each mystery. The posters are a great addition to each case providing students with a colorful visual of certain suspects and clues. The authors have provided helpful planning, implementing and assessing strategies for the teacher. Students and teachers alike will love this creative science resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Forensic activities ready to go. . .
This book is written by teachers for teachers. It is not often that activities are actually ready to go, but this has been provided by the authors. There are 3 complete "who done its", with comprehensive teacher instructions and even a suggested rubric. The prodecures are detailed enough for the students to follow, and pages that can be copied and given to the students. The activities can easily be adjusted to fit whatever kind of schedule your school runs. The activities promote critical thinking and analysis skills, while the students are enjoying themselves.I am a teacher that will be using these activities in my classroom this year! ... Excellent guide for advanced middle school or high school students who are interested in CSI or forensics. Some of these experiments would be too easy for a proper science project, while others occasionally involve materials that could be difficult to obtain.A majority of the experiments, however, are well presented (particularly enjoyed the materials lists and the diagrams, which are easy to read).Contains many good project ideas without overtly guiding you through the projects, which very nicely leaves room for alterations if necessary. ... Product Description

Blood, gore, and mystery—now, that’s way cool! Kids just love crime scene investigations, and they’ll get a thrill from turning their passion into a blue-ribbon science fair project. This fantastic color collection presents more than 20 great experiments, broken into exciting topics such as blood and guts, eyewitness accounts, and physical evidence. Best of all, children use actual CSI techniques: they’ll lift fingerprints, extract DNA, record skid marks, and see what a few key clues can reveal about a crime. Then they get to analyze the data, and come to their own conclusions. And don’t worry: there are no real crime scenes, dead bodies, or even suspects involved! (For example, an old steak demonstrates the process of decomposition.) In addition to the awesome projects, there’s tons of fun CSI history, careers, and cases.

5-0 out of 5 stars CSI Science Projects
This book had some really fun Science project ideas straight from CSI! You didn't have to buy a bunch of special equipment for any of it either. My son and his friend had a great time with the lifting fingerprints experiments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!
This book was a wonderful tool for my daughter to find a project for her school science fair!! She choose the fingerprinting project. My daughter is in 6th grade and she had so much fun preparing the test and presenting it in school for her friends. All of her friends wanted to be part of the presentation. The best part about the project for me as a parent was that most of the materials needed were things we already had in our home. I would highly recommend this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for science fairs - doesn't give it all to you
My daughter enjoys science a great deal, and so naturally went for the Advanced Science class that was offered in her middle school. Her one downfall, however, was the dreaded SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT... these things take forever, involve a lot of writing (not her forte) and although they aren't judged, they are graded.

Since she had decided to do some kind of CSI-themed project, this book sounded perfect so on the basis of a few reviews I went for it, and was not disappointed!

This book has projects ranging from the fairly easy (fingerprinting) to the exceedingly gross (blood spatter), and gives complete instructions on how to go about conducting the experiments (including how to make fake blood and fingerprint powder from household ingredients - no expensive kits!).

The other thing I liked a lot was that it doesn't give *too* much away. This is not a fill-in-the-blanks science fair setup, but rather a list of well-thought out suggestions and idea-fodder for each experiment, plus it includes suggestions for effective charts and display setups, and how to put together a time line for getting your experiment and paperwork done without doing it the weekend before it's due!

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Science projects that are cool!
I purchased this book for present and upcoming science projects. It has some really good ideas, if you're into tv crime shows. It gives all the information you need to complete a project, including information for reports. We really like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent hands-on activities
I found this book to be full of activities that were: grounded in science education standards, fun and engaging for the students, and easy to implement in the classroom. ... Read more

Product Description

While there is no such thing as a perfect match in the field of forensic comparative science, Forensic Comparative Science: Qualitative Quantitative Source Determination of Unique Impressions, Images, and Objects provides the experience, understanding, and judgment, necessary for concluding whether two unique images share common origin from a unique and persistent source.

Knowing there will be ranges of different levels of details throughout images, the expert must be able to comprehend when a sufficient quality and quantity of details is reached to render a judgment. By utilizing a process of analyzing the first image, analyzing the second image, comparing them to each other, and evaluating the significance of the analyses and comparisons based on expertise, the comparative scientist will be able to recognize the belief and believe the recognition that occurs during comparative examinations.

Forensic Comparative Science presents a philosophical and theoretical approach to explaining the cognitive process of comparative measurements and source determination. Science is about understanding and generalizing nature. This book is about generalizing comparative science.

  • Brings the comparative sciences under one philosophy of understanding in regards to terminology, examination method and standards for conclusions

  • Provides standards for conclusions including sufficiency vs. insufficiency for comparisons, individualization, agreement vs. disagreement, and levels of detail required

Lie detection, offender profiling, jury selection, insanity in the law, predicting the risk of re-offending , the minds of serial killers, and many other topics that fill news and fiction are all aspects of the rapidly developing area of scientific psychology broadly known as Forensic Psychology. This fascinating Very Short Introduction discusses all the aspects of psychology that are relevant to the legal and criminal process as a whole. It includes explanations of criminal behavior and criminality, including the role of mental disorder in crime, and it reveals how forensic psychology contributes to helping investigate the crime and catching the perpetrators. David Canter also explains how psychologists provide guidance to all those involved in civil and criminal court proceedings, including both the police and the accused, and what expert testimony can be provided by a psychologist about the offender at the trial. Finally, Canter describes how forensic psychology is used, particularly in prisons, to help in the management, treatment and rehabilitation of offenders, once they have been convicted. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An accessible and relevant introduction to forensic psychology
Forensic psychology is a fascinating branch of psychology in its own right. However, much of what most people imagine this field to be comes from crime novels, movies and TV shows, and for most part these fictional accounts are far removed from the actual real-world discipline. This very short introduction aims to dispel most of the myths and misconceptions that surround forensic psychology, and introduce the reader to this intriguing field in an accessible and readable manner.

The book is written from the point of view of forensic psychology as practiced in the UK, although most of the material is relevant for the US and other settings. The author is in fact credited for bringing forensic psychology to the UK, and has extensive knowledge of its practices and applications.

It is important to distinguish forensic psychology from two other fields with which it's often confused: forensic science and criminology. The former deals primarily with the physical aspect of crime, while the latter is interested in the societal aspects of criminal activity. As the author of this book puts it, forensic psychology deals with criminals, while these other fields deal with crime.

In the past there has been a great effort in trying to classify criminality as some sort of personality trait or psychological disease. These attempts have seen their heyday in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Most experts today, however, agree that there is no single "criminal mind" that all criminals share. There are many circumstances that lead to any given crime, and although some sort of psychological predisposition may be at play, it is certainly not the only or even the dominant feature.

Forensic psychology has evolved over the years, and today it already consists of several different subdivisions. There are forensic psychologists who specialize in being courtroom expert witnesses, there are those who work alongside the police in trying to solve crimes (profilers), some work with attorneys in preparing the witnesses and choosing the jury, but the vast majority work with criminals who have already been incarcerated. The rehabilitation process is very tricky, and we still don't have a sliver bullet that can help all criminals emerge from prison completely ready to join the society. This continues to be an active area of research, with forensic psychologists leading the way.

The book concludes with musings on the future of forensic psychology and all the outstanding prelims and issues where it will play a role. The book provides the reader with a very good sense of what this field is all about and what kind of developments are expected in the future. ... Read more

The mightiest fortresses in the world can fail, and when that happens all you can do (you being the person responsible for castle security) is figure out what went wrong, what damage was done, and by whom. If the castle was located in the right kind of kingdom--to take a metaphor too far--you can hope to prosecute the perpetrator. Computer Forensics: Computer Crime Scene Investigation explains how to gather evidence of computer crimes in such a way that it will be more likely to lead to a conviction in a criminal court. It's an interesting legal area--after all, it's almost always you, and not any law enforcement agency doing the surveillance and evidence-gathering on your computer systems--and John Vacca has done a fair bit of research. This book will probably expand your thinking on the subject of information security.

On the other hand, though Vacca gives good general advice (don't lose volatile information by shutting a compromised machine down midattack; do be prepared to translate memory dumps into jury-readable form), he sometimes meanders into generalizations and irrelevancies. The fact that terrorists distribute their plans via public Web sites is certainly scary, but hardly helpful to someone wanting to prosecute the guy who vandalized the corporate Web site. Similarly interesting, but practically irrelevant to most of us, are discussions of high-energy radio frequency (HERF) and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons that can knock out information systems from a distance. More focus on evidence collection in organizational computing environments would make this book useful, rather than just generally informative. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to gather evidence of a hack attack after the fact, and a lot of general-interest information on the state of crime and law enforcement in computer technology. Coverage is almost all general in nature, dealing with how to formulate a strategy and deal with events without getting into details of any operating system or computing environment. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive title, very little forensic information
My first question is, does the author know what the title of his own book is?I ask this because I was very disappointed with this work since the title simply does not match the content. The initial chapters do capture some essence of forensic investigation, but there is very little technical detail. It is mostly a "how to" guide for investigative teams in that it offers advice as how to organize, plan, and manage investigations--without getting into the specifics of how to do so. This book may be best for those with no understanding of the subject--like people who know almost nothing about computers.

A third of the way into the book, the author starts talking about cyberwarfare, information warfare, and attacks by hackers and terrorists without making any connection whatsoever to computer forensics and crime scene investigation. The information given is so broad with such little specific, useful examples it appears to be an effort to cover everything which ends up covering nothing.

Also, I did not like how the author pontificated about terrorism/counterterrorism policy issues where he is obviously out of his league as when issuing such sophmoric statements that terroists are increasingly focused on urban areas because cities are important. I thought it was because the world is increasingly urbanized with the majority of the global population-which is the terrorists' audience-now living in cities. Guess I was wrong. Finally, the author makes political statements in this work about U.S. political parties and representatives making certain decisions about missile defense strategy. Again, he is clearly out of his league and these examples only underline how far he has strayed off the title of the book--computer forensics and crime scene investigations.

In sum, this is a long book suffering from a lack of focus which only superficially addresses the issue of computer forensics and crime scene investigation.I suggest you look elsewhere for a detailed work on computer forensics. I bought this book on ebay for $5.00 and was I glad I did...it's not worth a penny more.

5-0 out of 5 stars In the field of computer forensics
This is an excellent book. I will tell you that it is not for beginners. This book is like a field book telling you the ins and outs of the legal side of computer forensics. It does tell you about some of the technical aspects of the Computer Forecsics field.

1-0 out of 5 stars Little or nothing for the practitioner or serious student
Vacca appears to have edited rather than written this, and none too well at that. Some chapters use British spelling and some US, some talk of Pounds Sterling and others Dollars.(For each of the five star reviews, examine that writer's other reviews see if you detect a pattern emerging.)

Having said that, the book does present a fairly decent overview of computer forensics for those who want general information about it, and had it been advertised as such I'd have graded it higher. It offers little or nothing, however, to the practitioner or serious student.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay but I was disappointed
I was real excited when I saw this book that looked like the bible of computer forensics and it came with a DVD. The cost of 50 dollars made it expensive but with DVD that I hope would have video that I can watch.

THe book is okay in giving a general idea of computer forensics. It was not very specific in what to do. It has an interactive part in which it give you general answer too not very thorough.

Then, it goes on a tangent about warfare and cyber terrorism. It leaves the forensics behind. And the book goes over 700 pages.

The DVd is intro to some fornesics software, I was hoping it had video
to show people like me that are visual and can learn more this way.

So, the book is okay but I would check others that are more specific and give more thorough details about computer forensics.

5-0 out of 5 stars New/updated info is spot on!
This edition of the book addresses the most current concerns/issues that every computer professional/layman should be aware of.The sheer amount of information offerd is impressive but, as always, presented in the same easy-to-absorb manner as John's numerous other books. ... Read more

    Product Description
Updated with new material, this collection vividly depicts the horrendous crimes, colorful detectives, and grueling investigations that shaped the science of forensics. In concise, fascinating detail, Colin Evans shows how far forensic science has come from Sherlock Holmes's magnifying glass. No crime in this book is ordinary, and many of the perpetrators are notorious: Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, John List, Bruno Hauptmann, Jeffrey Macdonald, and Wayne Williams among others. Along with the cases solved, fifteen forensic techniques are covered- including fingerprinting, ballistics, toxicology, DNA analysis, and psychological profiling, methods that have increased the odds that today's technosleuths will get the bad guys, clear the innocent-and bring justice to the victims and their families.Amazon.com Review
Anyone can summarize a collection of cases, but not everyone can make them read well. With a flair for compressed narrative worthy of a good short story writer, Colin Evans entertains and instructs the reader with 100 cases that exemplify the use of15 different forensic techniques (ballistics, fingerprinting). Some (like the Lindbergh case) arefamous, others are barely known, yet each has some unique twist that sets it apart. Many "firsts" are included, such as the first murder conviction without a body, the firstuse of psychological profiling, and the first use of DNA typing. Evans also brings out the distinct (often flamboyant) personalities of the pioneering experts of forensics and some of their more notable courtroom theatrics. Each case is labeled by name of criminal, forensic technique, date, location, and significant feature(s), making this a useful reference as well as a fun book to read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quick Reference for Scientific Crime Solving
I enjoyed this book. I am a big CSI buff and love science.

This book offer a quick reference (categorized as follows: Ballistics, Cause of Death, Disputed Documents, DNA Typing, Explosives and Fire, Fingerprinting, Forensic Anthropology, Odontology, Psychological Profiling, Identification of Remains, Serology, Time of Death, Toxicology, Trace Evidence and Voiceprints) with 3 (only the final category has 3. Every other category has more.) cases that show how the perps were caught and convicted using the science.

The case backgrounds are short, but the information provided on how the crime was solved is what this book is actually about and provide a great incite into each of the sciences that forensics use to help catch criminals. There is a short introduction to every category describing the science and then the cases follow.

I had a difficult time putting this book down and found myself trying to sneek even just a few minutes to read about the next case. Very well organized with dates, locations and significance of each case included at the beginning. There are little titles (which create almost like a small chapter) for each case. There are quite a few pictures that accompany the cases (not every case has pictures and where there are pictures it is only one per case).

Despite being over 300 pages long, it will be sure to be a quick read as it truly is captavating and very difficult to put down. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys CSI, forensics, true crime, science and the like.

1-0 out of 5 stars Each case is about 3 to 4 pages long. They read like an article from the newspaper
It contains about 100 cases. That's a lot. However, each case is about 3 to 4 pages long. They read like an article from the newspaper. They're succinct but not interesting. There are only a handful of photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining if disturbing...
Hard to put down at times.A splendid view of the way crime investigation has evolved over the last hundred years, milestoned with these landmark investigations.Beware though, some of these cases may have you looking at your neighbors in a new way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining to read, short for real insight
This is a good book for the reader who wants to read about some real life crime stories and how they are solved.
Also a useful read for someone looking for a good real crime story, to buy ANOTHER book to read further about it.
Personally I found this book entertaining and read it with interest, because i mostly get bored with a crime story that covers a whole book, that goes on and on about what the neighbor' s wife told the police about what her husband told her that he saw and all the not-so-useful-facts.
Beware though that the story for each crime is real short, it mostly covers the forensics point of view of how a crime was solved.
